Of course as someone mentioned in the replies, the tilting iron platforms are also present in NSMBW in W8-3. Some of em had to slip through the cracks somehow! If there are any other inconsistencies or mechanics that you think should have or not have counted, feel free to reply in this thread and I might also reply with an explanation if there are any lol
If enemy behavioral differences are counted as unique gimmicks, then World 8-4 is the only level to feature Scuttlebugs detaching from their threads and crawling on the ground. In World 4-1 and their only future 2D platformer appearance in New Super Mario Bros. 2, Scuttlebugs just dangle from their threads, moving up and down.
the falling bridge blocks are similar to the falling bridges from super mario maker (don't know if they appeared earlier then that)
a bit of a specific fun observation if anything but the tilting iron platformers also appear in mario party 9 as part of the magma mayhem minigame
I think it's kinda cool a really niche level gimmick just gets turned into a minigame of it's own
I guess it’s worth mentioning that the red Mario Bros. style platforms from 2-2 and 8-6 also appear in NSMBU, albeit retextured.
OG Dorrie - Want her around.
Yoshi Dorrie - Fuck off.
Also, I would've liked the OG Coin Coffers (AKA N64 Moneybags) to return with a slight redesign.
im glad to see these games get discussed other than “haha its the same game again” because these games actually do have unique ideas to them
But this is literally all from New Mario DS, which is arguably the only one that indeed feels fresh
I mean, are they wrong?
DS was the most "unique" game in the entire "New" series
Yeah, that's my point
I think the first NSMB was the only one, people wouldn't have gotten so tired of it. If we go back to the past four 2D Mario games each one have a different style. This keep them from cannibalizing each other.
@@vini64 this is all from the first game because it’s the only game being looked at
NSMB2 has the fire flower pipes as one thing in particular that’s unique to it for example, and I haven’t played much of it yet
Snailicorns specifically never left my mind as they're such a unique and memorable design for something they NEVER used again.
They were much more prominent in newer ds
I'm glad more people subscribe to the Snailicorn religion. I never forgot, sweet prince.
Their design always stuck out to me as a kid and I’ve never forgotten
Their design stuck in my mind so much because it's so fucking freaky, probably why they never show up again.
Same, but for another reason: They are butt-ugly.
4:06
2-4 is also the only level where Paragoombas appear. There are just those two in the whole game.
Those don't fall under the "never appeared before or after" rule
@@tailpig6417 I think it’s more of a fun fact than anything
That doesn’t feel real
@@tailpig6417 neither does hammer bros so were you even listening
As a kid, I thought that MC Ballyhoo from Mario Party 8 was a Blockhopper that decided to dress fancy instead of being a block.
headcanon accepted
would've rioted if cork wasn't s-tier
for real the cork was iconic
The cork really struck me as a child and it feels.. so out of place, feem like something that came out from a mandela effect or smth but.. it's there
15:53 "I don't know why it does that but that's very cool" sums up the game perfectly, at least to me.
Imagine if we could get a Blockhopper as a partner character in a new Paper Mario?
Imagine, like, a seemingly empty town full of brick blocks everywhere, the nearby villages believed that this town was abandoned when suddenly-
You discover that it’s quite the contrary- it’s populated by tons of Blockhopper folk! :D
Blockhoppers just need to return, period. They just have that certain something that makes them likeable.
@@dededeletethis9940 agree!
Sadly, the branding department won't let them, if statements/rumors on why the Paper Mario games changed are any indication. And this is why we should euthanize all marketers...
In addition to the levels, I've always felt the Blue Shell is an incredibly underrated power-up. The Mega Mushroom stole a lot of the spotlight, but the Blue Shell is like a superior version of the SMB3 suits: It gives you superior swimming, immunity to contact damage and fireballs while crouching, and shell dashing is so incredibly fun. I once tried to determine how many stages you could shell dash through from beginning to end, as well as try to beat all possible bosses strictly with shell dashing. It's such a fun power-up that, unlike all of the flight power-ups out there, still forces you to engage with the level design and layouts, but vastly changes up how you play.
I thought the Blue Shell was cool when I was younger but I started to avoid it as I grew up because I prefered to run (so if I had a Blue Shell I'd have to move slower to not shell dash) and if I did something like shell dash into a pit there'd be no making it out, so outside of Star Coins it was eh to me more trouble than it's worth. I guess that's why I appreciate the Penguin Suit in general and prefer it to Blue Shell? But, I didn't know you could swim better with it, you learn something new everyday. I should give shell-dashing through levels a try since I'm better at Mario now.
@@cosmix1 "if I had a Blue Shell I'd have to move slower to not shell dash" that makes no sense why you not be shell dashing? You might get a game over from falling into pits but at least you were shell dashing.
The two player Vs levels are incredibly fun with the shell, it's so busted. My best memories of this game is playing with my brother killing each other with that powerup
Blue Shell rocks. :D It was always my fave. Truly wacky how many things the crouch protects you from.
@@JrIcify What can I say? I was a pussy lol.
“This kickstarted someone's feti- A tier!”
I feel called out.
These things got my heart playing Mario Kart at 200cc when I was a kid wtf
I feel attacked
I didn't click on this video expecting to be called out
I’d love to see you do this with SMA4’s World-E gimmicks, they feel very much like the spiritual predecessors to NSMB’s style of wacky gimmicks.
It was the last 2D Mario game before NSMB, so it makes sense that it would have some influence
@@modernkiwi6447 yep
With the Wii U's eShop closing in May 2023, Super Mario Advance 4 is a must-buy for people who want to play the eReader courses before it's too late. eReader cards aren't being printed anymore.
@@harrybest2041 From a video I've yet to fully look into from forever ago, you can apparently print your own e-reader cards with a high enough quality laser printer (have never owned a laser printer, hence why I haven't looked into it). But for those without an e-reader, yea Wii U eshop is the last legal place to acquire those levels.

The SomeCallMeJohnny reference at 8:35 was hilarious! Nice one dude
Was just about to comment this.
That was quite the deep cut reference - that original Mario 64 review is slowly approaching 7 years old. How the time flies.
This game is honestly one of NIntendo's greatest of all time. Sooooo glad to have grown up with this
Finally, someone made a video about the unique aspects of this game. I'm glad that NSMBDS has been finally getting the credit it deserves and isn't just being lumped in with the rest of the NSMB games.
5:59 The change from hurting you out of nowhere to only hurting you when stepping on you is also a plus.
I think if they make another NSMB, they should have Koopalings make an appearance in the miniboss towers, and original bosses appear in the boss castles. IMO it would be the perfect balance between recurring minibosses and original bosses, even the original NSMB is guilty of overusing Bowser jr for every tower.
agree 100
Glad to see people talk about this game
The cork is funny and I like the blocks attached to strings for some reason
THE BUZZY BEETLE DESERVED BETTER
and glad i could give a hand with this!!!
The tilting iron platforms were also in NSMBW in 8-3
"We need a new 2D Mario with weird gimmicks"
SMB Wonder: "Allow me to introduce myself"
And Happy New Soup to you too! 🍲
Actually quite a few of the new enemy designs in this game feel like they'd be right at home in the Paper Mario series, and clearly Sticker Star was able to use some like the Snow Spike, so why the hell did it not make use of more of the wacky designs from this game?
the arrow platform at around 15:20 reminds me of the arrow platform in mario 64's hazy maze cave
There is one in NSMBU that is very similar, but it doesn't translate well to 2D.
8:36 love the somecallmejohnny reference
New intro, funny New Soup throwback, AND a Johnny reference?
Yeah, this year started off great.
When you mentioned hammer bros only naturally appearing in 2-4, I was about to object due to the level chock full of those enemies in 8-7; but as it turns out, there aren't actually any hammer bros in that stage; only fire bros, boomerang bros, and sledge bros
Maaan, I was so prepared for the Piranha on the Cork to fly into Nova, the way the video set the scene up
“Masquerade Block Killer” is such a awesome name for the block hoppers.
Loved the mention of scripulous fingore. I hope that he is brought back in the next 2d Mario game!
I was literally just talking about these levels the other day. See, stuff like this is what made the original NSMB much more memorable to me.
The bendy pipes were a very cool feature that was used in a couple levels. You get into them, expecting to be shot straight up, but then they bend slightly, or sometimes massively, and you get chot in that direction with a proper arc and everything
8:40
Gotta say, love the somecallmejohnny reference
Great video! Glad someone finally mentioned the original things from the orginal nsmb instead of lumping it with the rest of them
First ZoomZike now this? New Super Mario Bros eating good these past few days
I'm glad this game is being talked about more. Its got so many unique mechanics that STILL haven't made it into other games.
The platform in 8-6 are a reference to the original Mario Bros because the main enemy in that level are spiny, and that's what the turtles are replaced with in the Gameboy ports
I will never understand why people don’t think the NSMB games have any distinct features. They’re not the same, and the DS entry is solid prof of that.
One of my favourite thing is the new enemies. Some have come back a few times but quite a lot haven’t returned. The bosses are also great, being a simple advancement of a regular enemy but with distinct battle gimmick.
Within the mario universe, I always considered gravity changing to be a whoa zone mechanic. It combines well with some of the cooler aspects of Super Paper Mario.
12:27 not even the haunted piano was safe from that cursed platform
The parts that really made laugh like an idiot were the unagi with that cool chair spin and the haunted platform representated by an actual piano falling out the window.I always called it candy platform because of the colors, but it's nice to kniw the official name
Nintendo, if you're watching this, put some of these gimmicks in Super Mario Maker 3. They'd be fun to experiment with.
I really dig your video style and the way you incorporate you humor in it🙌😂
4:18 I always thought that those bars looked like yellow crayons when I was younger.
How is it I barely remembered most of these? Thank you so much for reminding me of these and making me appreciate this game again!
I think it's a good opportunity to say that, excluding NSMBU's switch release and the Mario Maker games, it's going to be 10 years this year since NSMBU released and no other original 2D mario games came out after that.
If you count New Super Luigi U, it would be 9 years.
Dude... I remember wanting a Wii U because of NSMBU... or well it seemed cool to younger me don't judge lol
@@youkaijsgb Oh don't worry.
I was on the same boat.
0:36 that’s me with Kirby’s Return to Dreamland
8:39 OMG, I LOVE YOU FOR REFERENCING THAT ONE GUY THAT I WILL NEVER REMEMBER HIS NAME!
I never realized that those rotating rooms just teleport mario but frame by frame you can clearly see the point where the shading of the blocks "jumps"
also looking in the editor you can see both versions of the sections right next to each other
either way that level got me obsessed with rotating levels, which is why I absolutely loved Roiling Roller Isle in Bowsers Fury and want to do something like that in a future custom level
I really liked Spike Bass's appearance. It's more interesting than Porcupuffer.
That one haunted platform is actually so iconic
Please make more of these videos, the tier list was the cherry on top.
Nobody makes videos talking about Mario's unique level mechanics in depth. (you could even expand to other franchises, MAKE THIS A THING!)
Nintendo should make a little Moneybag coin purse, I'd buy that in a heartbeat
The (as the Mario Encyclopedia calls them) "Mario Bros. platforms" do reappears in the NSMB series (Sumo Bros levels)
The titlting iron platforms re-appears in NSMBW's World 8 and NSMBU's Iggy's fortress
"But wait, the same ghost house also gives us...Scr- *SCRIPULOUS FINGORE-"*
That part is hilarious.
That final castle is probably one of the best 2D Mario levels ever.
The best final level goes to SMG's final level.
Never realized how unique this game is holy shit
Snow Spike is a really cool variant of Spike who I wish was used a little more often, and those falling wooden blocks in the beach levels I like as they're a thematically relevant take on the donut blocks. Also Moneybags > Coin Coffers.
Maybe NSMB is derived because it more or less encouraged Nintendo to just rehash old concepts, but there is something special about the tiny but satisfying, candy colored levels of the original game
Hey, a video based on that one tweet you made! Nice work!
God whenever he cut to the later games it feels as if they were in black and white compared to the original
Squigglers are the cutest enemies ever
13:34 Don't those also appear in New Wii with a nifty 3D effect too?
Yes, but it is still 2 levels total.
And this is why nsmbds is my absolute favourite of the whole new super Mario bros series. It had lots of unique gimmicks that often were refreshing and only were used once so it didn’t get stale.
"And in 4-6 Dorrie becomes a big boy, seriously it's been 5 levels what did you eat"
super mushrooms obviously
This video is like EXACTLY what I was looking for. I always randomly think about these weird one off mechanics from this game so it’s cool to see a video cataloging them!
NSMB DS is my favorite because it feels very unique with all these features that don’t really get used again.
I feel like you should have definitely included the gimmicks that were unique at the time of its release
12:59 If you think about it... they did reuse this gimmick in Mario Kart Wii. They're red... they hurt... and upside down.
Imagine if the star killed the giant terrain wiggler, dropping you into the void
4:10 can we appreciate how expertly he's dodging those hammers, like, damnn.
Such a great video idea!
Also I loved that Somecallmejohnny reference, pretty funny!
As a kid I remember playing that really cool wiggler riding level and telling my friends about it, but they didn't believe me and for some reason, stupid kid stuff, couldn't find it again. I forgot about it till right now. I'm glad I was right cause it's as awesome as I remember.
props for including what music you used. Hate it when people don’t do that
To be honest a platformer with deforming the level around you to navigate it as a central mechanic doesn’t sound like a bad idea.
I would love to see a video tier listing super mario wonders unique gimmicks, Theres a lot of unique gimmicks too!
I really enjoyed this video man. It was fun looking back at these mechanics that I haven’t seen in years. They’re very quirky and nice :)
They really need to bring back the Blue Shell
just saying, your channel is very awesome!!! i came from your jellycar stream (because im a jellycar fan) but you make nintendo content which i like, so you just earned a subscriber
Wow, I barely even remember some of these, it's been so long! This video was a fun way to revisit a game I really enjoyed as a child.
new super Mario bros was my first mario platformer games and it’s had so many gimmicks that we’ve never seen again, I wish we got to see more of them used in current games
I've literally been thinking that this would be a video I'd want to make for years but I'm glad someone talented actually got to it for realls
The rotating platforms in world 2 castle remind me more of the reznor boss fight in super mario world.
WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU'RE AT *NEW* SOUP?!?!?
9:58 These actually exist in another 2d Mario Game, In New Super Mario Bros 2, in the secret star world that you get from beating the game in the first level almost identical gates appear around the first half of the level
The spike bass is a bit different for the reason that the porcupiffers eat you instead of simply diving/jumping at you, just thought id say
14:13
10/10 names
Nintendo, please hire him to name random stuff...
Great vid! I'd love to see you cover the rest of the series
Also love Bob-ombs, best enemy in the Mario Series!
(Bob-omb for Smash!)
This is my first video ive watched from you and the One two three four! Cue from rhythm heaven fever damn-near knocked me out bc of the happy shock
The tilting iron platforms reappeared in world 8 of NSMBW
8:38 i did NOT expect to see such a huge somecallmejohnny reference lol
I enjoy the spiders in that stage 7:41
The development of NSMB is such a good topic. The massive changes that happened from 1st look to release is amazing. 64 DS may be even cooler because of how much of a different game it would have been. It's been this long and I want to know what the image of all 4 playable characters facing Bowser under the castle in a big empty room.
keep doing videos like this, this is a really awesome topic to cover!!
Seeing Bowser's Castle in S tier makes me happy. That level is why that's my favorite Mario game
Since you talked about balloon boos and Kab-ombs, you should also mention those pumpkin guys in the ghost house in world 8.
I'd love to see you cover gimmicks in other Mario games. Cool vid!
never knew I needed a kab-omb plush until now
This is one of those videos that feels like it was made specifically for me. Love it~
