Do yourself a favor just put some trans fluid or mineral spirits in. Air line. Alcohol in winter. Condensation builds up inside. Fan clutch sSave yourself a lot of work Let me know if you can find a cheap Working man lift. You work yer A- off 💪😎👍🏁🏆
It's amazing to me that most people wouldn't ever even consider tackling this job on their own. I always want to learn how things work and why they stop working. Sure, saving money is nice too but I mostly just don't want to have to depend on someone else if something fails on my vehicle.

Great video as always Jesse! I can confirm from experience that corrosion on clutch surface will definitely create some very strange symptoms, including a lot of DRAG. Cause the clutch material will not be able to slip very easily over a pitted surface. I've had this on a motorcycle clutch that would not release easily and drag a TON until it warmed up. And it was all due to just a little bit of pitting on the steel discs.

Just started to watch...first thought, ac switch,the green one with the end like a tyre valve,and 2 wires coming out. If it fails, it will cause the fan to lock in. ..just a thought? Arr,you can get an overhaul kit for the B&W.
get a Evans Tempcon valve mount it below the top tank so it's always in coolant they are a good "what's that noise - why is my truck running hot" alert!, cable tie a tube joiner to the line incase the valve craps out, and keep a portable soldering iron in the truck and you can solder the brass fittings sealed if ever needs be that the fan craps itself (looks like you have separate belts for the fan so less of an issue maybe)

Great fix Jesse. I know zip about trucks but thinking out loud, is there a water separator or something similar in the air storage system on these trucks? That level of corrosion in that clutch needs water to kick it off. Maybe check if the system to separate water in the air lines needs a kittle attention to prevent it coming back again :)

Good video! Water in your air system causes a LOT of problems over time. Do you drain the tanks regularly? Is there a dryer in the system? I guessed the fan clutch was $4-500: boy was I wrong.
Jesse, If it doesn't work out, they have a rebuild kit for those fan clutches. Ihave rebuilt a few over the years. What was the oring , on the ruted shaft like? Anyway best of luck with it. I had a road call to help out a coworker who dropped the fanclutch when he was removing one that was totally worn out. It let the fan hit the radiator.

Hi, just a thought for you to consider, maybe the previous owner of this truck did not drain the water from the air system, hence the rust that you found, especially if it had stood for some time before you bought it?
Fan is stuck engaged because the rust has seized it. Usually whack the aluminum with a punch and it unlocks. Horton fans were the worst for this if a truck is not used often.
You probably could add an electric temperature sensor like they use for an electric radiator fan on a car instead of the switch you added to turn the fan on and off automatically.

Isn't the computer supposed to switch the fan on following the engine temperature ?

I have a frozen up air clutch and I learned alot ! Sometimes these things just need to be taken apart and cleaned up

I think before taking mine apart , I'll make sure I'm ready to rebuild it or replace it. A replacement is like 800 bucks

It is nice that the failure mode is to fail engaged rather than fail disengaged. Will not overheat if the system is not working properly.

You put the bolts through both sections and that was why it wouldn't turn
All of my recent vehicles have electric fans which are extremely reliable and trouble free. Don’t know if this is an option for you, however…
