- Three CSX units run the entire Georges Creek Subdivision starting at the end of the line at Console No.10 (MP-18.7) and ending at Westernport, MD (MP-31.5). The power heads across Klondike Road at Ocean (1:15), passes through Midland (1:41), Lonaconing Junction (2:28), Lonaconing (3:17), Barton (4:58) and crosses Bridge No.3138 in Westernport (6:45). In 1992 the line was 12.8 miles long, today it's just 3.1, as the remaining 9.7 miles, to the end of the line, was abandoned in 2005.
Originally the line connected from the C&P Frostburg Depot to the area at or near Borden Shaft but this 3 mile section was removed along with the trackage through Bowery Street Tunnel by 1974 and a small section of the RoW was covered over by construction of new US48 (today's I-68).
The Westvaco Paper Mill's 600' high smokestack is seen at the 6:03 mark, along with the flowing water of Georges Creek.
Unfortunately the mill closed on June 30, 2019.

Looks like the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad is going to bring the Georges Creek Subdivision back to life again.
Beautiful History!!!🥹
awesome video!!!
There is a Georges creek near me here in eastern Ky. At first I thought this was filmed here because the land looks so similar.
it begins @ westernport & now is only used 3.1 miles from there to morrisons. when i did the video it ran an additional 9.7 miles to consol no.10 where it ends. yes, washouts ravaged the line, the track remains but is in very poor condition, overgrown with trees, weeds, etc.
i believe the hoppers were removed after flooding. years ago this line ran into frostburg thru the tunnel & connected with the now scenic line.
i'm very skeptical of that happening.
the cost of putting new track in will be outrageous.
Was this stretch of track DTC? Is it still used? Back in 05 when I was up there someone told me they were just storing old coal hopper up there and I saw somewhere where parts of it had washouts.
