It's worth mentioning that MG still hold the record for the world fastest estate car. Did you know that? Proberly not. This was the chief problem with MGR, they didn't advertise anything they'd archived.
A lot of people forget that a lot of Rover's models received very good reviews when they first appeared. Read reviews of the 620ti when it first appeared, and you'll be surprised.
I owned a Triumph TC 2500 with a German clock and a Mercedes with Australian springs and a ford Telstar that was really a Mazda. Look under the hood of any vehicle or the nationality of any custom designer and you have to ask yourself the question "where is my car made?" and the answer is "who cares, as long as it is good"
I just wish the first ad was shown and the last one, which could have spanned a whole advert break like Honda have done. Truly inspirational, a real shame the public never saw it. (If you havent already watch 'The death of the British motor industry' I have posted on You tube. cheers.
This was very sad to watch. Can't help feeling that a lot more could have been done to save the company. Can you imagine the French, Germans or Italians letting their indigenous car industry go down the toilet?
The Streetwise was actually doing like Citroen did with there on-roader, and like Audi have done with larger cars. The Streetwise holds the road much better than a 25, and rides better over rougher ground - I've had one! Great cars!
I'm 18, I've owned four cars since i've been able to drive, The list goes like this : Vauxhall astra 1.6 2003 vauxhall vectra 2.0DTI Fiat punto 1.2 Rover 200 SDI 1999(Slightly tuned) Guess which one i still own? My rover! I've had it for ages now and i love it!... It may be a loud diesel but my god it's fucking reliable! And great fun to drive, Slightly modified now with a garf lead and turbo mods etc so it's fast! and cheap to run, Cheapest car i've had to insure actually and AHHH i just it!
where are you now Rod Ramsay....??? i think this guy deserves a medal, he continued to sell 10 year-old designed cars with only minimal facelifts, & wonder how many times he was promised the fabled newly designed models were on their way into production....??? oh well.....i tend to look at the spanish Seat cars now & think 'you should have been the new Rover'.....!
Very sad, BMW (who started life making Austin 7s from Longbridge under licence)stalled the 75 launch, asset stripped, and left Rover to die with a small dowery to spin it out a bit.Did you know there was a Riley 75 convertible prototype? Labour should be ashamed at letting them die. VW and Reanault are state owned why not Rover? The UK is dead in the water with nothing to sell abroad now....
Quite sad to view this because things looked a little optimistic (advertising wise, not sale wise). The 45 and the 25 looked a lot better from then onwards but it was to late, the nails were well and truely in the coffin. What with negative media broadcasts and an already extremely tarnished image, Rover was over. And now we have no indigenous car manufacturer, so for every car purchased; effectively money is leaving the country. I wonder what France, Germany and Italy think of us?
Thing is thats where I think your wrong. They diddnt make heavily flawed cars. Ok some may have had their problems - but what car hasnt? I think the problem is that people were too ignorant to give Rover a chance....they wouldnt even think about going to a Rover dealer or looking at a Rover when looking for a new car, because they just assume that there crap - as its a Rover. They are actually well built solid cars, nice to drive, and reliable - yes you read correctly, RELIABLE
yep the k series is a fantastic engine, which is sadly very under-rated and has got itself a bad image due to head gaskets. But, hey - my year 2000 Rover 45 1.8 k series has done 144k miles and on original head gasket. If the headgasket blows tomorrow, I would change it with a cost of around 30 quid, plus 25 quid for a new timing belt. Total of £55 for new headgasket and timing belt.
One thing, why do i see loads of rovers around in britian, i mean it must be about 1/5 of people here must have rovers! Also in germany, i saw a fair amount there too!
Malcstag. You couldn't have put my point accross any better (albeit I do like Clarkson apart from his harsh words about rover). Our trade deficit is running well past £80billion per year. Does our current government think we can keep buying crud off china etc and screw up our own manufacturing without massive problems. If Britain's trade balance was a house we'd have been reclaimed by china long ago. Keep Buying British my friend.
With you all the way there, I've never found the mythical "German reliability" either. Infact I'd go as far as to say German cars are generally some of the least reliable about. Plauged by faults, especially modern VW/Audi/Skodas. I like French cars though, so I really can't comment on much
@mushroomscouser What a load of crap. I have driven and owned several Rovers throughout the years, and they have been without a shadow of a doubt the best cars I have ever had. Very, and I do mean VERY reliable. ALL of them have covered high mileage, my car now is a 2001 Rover 45 1.8 connoisseur which I do about 800 miles a week in, and has now done 185k miles - its brilliant.
Its alright, if your blind! Yes i agree, its looks to much like a lexus. Jaguar should of gone retro, not modern, ford is taken away its soul! Please do not argue, its true!
Yeah to hell with cars that aren't their own!... Like the peugeot 106, They just stole it from citroen :O And like the seat arosa and the lupo :O and a load of other companies that re badge cars, Shame on them.
Phoenix four drove mg rover to the grave,(no pun intended),. employees of Mg/rover got a lot of the blame for its demise, but like anyone, why the hell would you put your heart ands soul into your job if you know it was being managed by such a group of back stabbing losers, this is just scraping the surface, The phoenix four just sapped everything that BMW threw its way, so you cant blame Bmw as a manufacturer taking the best marque "mini" , best of a bad situation I would say,
truth is i hope the nanjing motor co do really well with rover/mg... just to show that without the corrupt phoenix 4 and peoples perception... that a bloomin good motor can be produced.. the fact was rovers have near always been good... advertisment was crap... and the fact that most of the people who owned rovers neglected the k-series engine... the engine is fantastic if correctly looked after... lets see what nanjing do with the new "n" series
@andysllt for whats its worth I will always cherish my ZR and mpi mini which both I still own and wil keep going even though I could afford a shit box bmw/audee chav mobile but to be honest I wouldnt be seen dead in one!

Ive had 2 Rover 200's and never had an earthing fault. Ive never had a headgasket failure either. Never had any rust issues on any of them either.

Because They were good cars, good looking and one of the only cars that were being built in Britain!

Good old MG Rover, such a shame it's gone.
yep the k series is a fantastic engine, which is sadly very under-rated and has got itself a bad image due to head gaskets.
