There was a by-election in Ireland in July 2021 and one of the candidates was an conspiracy-touting anti-masker (Dolores Cahill). She wasn't allowed into the vote counting venue because she refused to wear a mask. One of the people with her (an American) yelled at the Gardaí (police) guarding the door that they were "violating the constitution"
... I don't think she meant our Constitution, since our Constitution explicitly states you have the right to freedom (etc) except in accordance with the law and mask-wearing was a legal requirement in Ireland at the time.
There is a video of Cahill repeatedly running at a line of Gardaí trying to break through them and yelling while they just stand still and watch her, which went viral here and is pretty funny

That was Wayne Lich, Tamara Lich's husband! He did that in a courtroom during her bail hearing, and the judge act supremely confused and said she didn't know what that meant. She literally said "What do you mean, first amendment? What's that?"
The First Amendment to the Canadian Constitution is either one allowing Parliament to create more provinces or pne making Manitoba a province. There's some debate on that.

It's hard to capture just how significant the Terry Fox statue was. Terry Fox is one of if not the most respected, uncomplicated, broadly supported figures of Canadian history. A beloved Iconic figure of Canadiana, and they choose to carelessly disrespect the statue of an imuno comprimised person by dressing them up in anti lockdown nonsense. Granted, finally getting to the endpoint was somewhat of a relief, and I wasn't demanding they go Portland PD on them. When the first clip from the occupation played, with the horns sounding, I had to stop because I felt a panic attack coming. It was absolutely horrible living here during it. I couldn't sleep, I couldn't leave the house safely as a POC without being harassed, it's been more than a month and my hearing is still damaged from the constant noise. The many news outlets constantly calling it that, or repeatedly reporting on "bouncy castles" and calling it "non-violent" when so many people in my neighbourhood were being harassed and/or assaulted during it, drove me bananas. "Protestors" came to my building and buzzed random people then screamed at them and called them names because they weren't buzzed in, or forced their way in while residents were entering, or occupied my lobby while drinking booze. This made it feel unsafe for me to leave my home. It enrages me how much of the media were sympathetic and dishonest in their reporting and meanwhile the "protestors" claimed that the media were being "dishonest" about them. More of them will come this summer and it scares the crap out of me.

    1. Love that you essentially said "hey, the trucker convoy is identity politics!"
    2. As a UK permanent resident in BC, thanks for explaining the Emergencies Act. There's been a lot of "discourse", but no actual explanation of what the damn thing is and why it's good/bad/an overreach/appropriate, whatever. The basic fact of what it is and does helps me to comprehend the political impact and make up my own mind about it (yeah, it doesn't seem great!)
    3. I'd like to point out that the last sociological theory you mentioned, that explains why the personal has become political, ignores a HUGE thing: that for marginalized people, the personal has ALWAYS been political. When your identity is used to limit your power, that's inevitable. It felt very white and heteronormative to say identity-based politics are a new thing (not a criticism of you, I'm not shooting the messenger - just the theory itself seems to be lacking in perspective).

Just want the common folk to have basic needs met with any one job. It can be done...but multi-family apartments and such depend on a cycle of barely getting by...
Humans need to stop infighting long enough to topple our oppressors
      Mitch McConnell is Emperor Palpatine
Some of you will die, but that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make! - Lord Trump
@Justin Y. Trump is evil. He ignored this virus until he couldn't ignore it...the steps taken have been deliberately slow to contain this virus, as the government has made huge financial gains in allowing particularly older, retired people to die...no more pay outs each month...voting, if still valid in this country...is our only peaceful, legal recourse...voting 3rd party is the ONLY WAY to get real humans in power, rather than dynasty families and career politicians. When we realize the 2 parties we are divided over LOVE the division among us...then and only then may America be great again...
@Justin Y. Lack of knowledge of the deep state? I just accused our government of mass murder...I understand deep state...fact that you refuse to listen, only attack, says too much about you...clearly you haven't known hardship. Clearly none of this has impacted you negatively...you are part of the problem, offering zero solutions.
@Justin Y. Calling me stupid really helps your case...Trump has very limited brain power, as evidenced by his rambling, generally repetitive, toddler talks...although most of us are sorely undereducated, Trump really amazes me every time i listen to his banter. Trump did not close the borders in time, many flights to the USA brought sick folk here. Action wasn't taken until very late February, and by then 15 confirmed cases were more than enough to basically allow what amounts to airborn, quickly lethal AIDS《why this? (Because this virus mutates too fast to create an effective vaccine, which may never get made), upon the world. This is dangerous because common behaviors of common folk, such as shoulder to shoulder events, shopping and sardine packed working conditions, helped this virus along...even as people died in China daily...America went forward 2 full months wothout any concerns...then...rather than force the hands of state officials, and put the population through a 2 month quarantine, we've been seeing states react, rather than prepare...and all at the natural stages this virus thrives on...complacency among enough of us to allow the spread to continue. You refusing to see this logic isn't a blight on my mental capacity, just proves you are as simple as our Lord Trump...and likely among those very few, who like many elites, don't even understand the plight of the masses, whom I speak for, in this contrived crisis...Trump is calm about the virus because he exists outside the bounds of common folk...Trump and other powerful people would never have to take the risk of infection seriously as they are all well protected by expendable servants or can at the least afford to continue living lavishly and distanced from peons such as myself. 9/11 was an inside job and this proves what I've feared since then...that the government can perform mass murder and the people will always just accept it, hire the next sociopath in line, whichever of the 2 evil divisionary parties they aspire to dwell in...
Our educational system is archaic. We could be educating everyone from home...there are no valid excuses for our current broken schooling, and no teachers need lose jobs...as the internet is an amazing communication device...
Taxes are broken. Your dollar earned gets hit so many times...and we all just accept that blindly.
Medicine is broken. My grandmother died because her selfish daughter needed cable tv more than grandma needed diabetes medicine...and millions suffer from the inability to afford insulin, despite that drug initially starting out as a gift to humanity from a generous genius, privatized by evil and greed, priced beyond reality for most.
Our 2 party system is designed to keep us bickering...division keeps us docile enough to accept our own government conspiring to murder us, with our acceptance. 3rd party candidates are generally real humans...that care about other humans, even, gasp, total strangers and foreigners...
We are all on the same damn spaceship...Earth. I judge character...not race, not whatever religion folks are born into. I am old...I am tired of seeing disaster after disaster get slow attention from government, as poor people die in thousands due to delayed or nonexistent help.
It's about time the many take control, with votes, to dethrone the sociopaths that control us, play games with our very lives...
When there are only voluntary homeless, when the janitor is paid living wage, when a high school graduate can earn enough in food service, or retail, to support a modest home and essentials, while creating a nest egg...when veterans are given the same care as Congress, Senate and other positions of highest power, rather than left to suffer and die, when the lowest paying jobs are enough to survive on, then and only then, can America boast of being great...
As it stands...I feel most of us are born into lies we have no control over...It's well orchestrated, as my points are made clear in every satirical broadcast about the plight of the expendable masses, world wide...
Do I want peace, equity and kumbaya? Yeah...I do...are there sociopaths in power oppressing the common folk...yeah...there are...have good Democrats and Republicans existed? Yes...they get blocked by evil at every turn, often resigning due to unbeatable corruption. Do I pity the very people I label simple? You bet I do...I want this planet to be a better place for most...not some...for all...if ever possible...
This covid virus isn't done. It mutates too fast to pin it down with a vaccine...and we haven't seen the end of it because we, as a planet, would have to agree on a few ground rules to consider being a functional society.
That's my 2 cents...some of it...take it or leave it. Most of us just exist and watch, lazily, rather than get directly involved in change. @soaringvulture We don't seem to take note...we, the expendable masses, are being told to push through life ignoring this virus...it took ONE infection to start a Planet Wide Pandemic...and because we didn't quarantine from January 1st to February, we get to watch innocent and otherwise lives lost, daily...who are "we", in "we're in it together"? Certainly not the elite...they step on us to avoid harm...I'm furious with humanity as a whole...I'm furious we accept all this death and Trump's toddler talks...like a Ted talk without useful insight...
Those of us suffering are many...while the privileged watch the show They created...when...when will the common folk unite against tyranny, through the only peaceful means we have...vote out career politicians and dynasty families in favor of fellow human beings, with consciousness and compassion for the lowest among us.
We won't stop the cycle of abuse by trading Democrats and Republicans, two sides of the same evil, corrupt coin.
Vote 3rd party...vote for real people, with flaws, that understand what struggle is...that have put time behind any of these so called essential, yet minimum wage jobs...
This economy is screwed...always has been. The vast majority of work available is menial labor...food service, retail, janitors, grocers...a great many take their wages in government...which is far too big, complex and unsustainable...
Until any job can offer a modest secure household, until the only homeless are those who volunteer to live "free"...until the pill giants are mandated to make life saving medicine reasonably priced...we are a selfish, horrid nation, divided by the very people that oppress us, yet too busy fighting amongst ourselves to take any useful action towards a better tomorrow for the MANY, not the FEW

      Don't die, vote if able.

Tiny corrections: Emmanuel Macron is president de la république, not prime minister, the original french yellow vest (Gilets Jaunes) was very diverse,it originally started about the diesel-tax in november 2018 but quickly pivoted towards asking for a more representative democracy, it had some far-right elements (& far-right parties tried to approppriate the movement but they got swiftly rejected).. At some point it had a 70% rate of support among the population.. An interesting aspect is that it got support from "les banlieues" (suburbs, but they're equivalent to innercities) & there was also an anti-police, anti-racist element.. The main concern was not really "taxes are too high" but "I'm paying taxes, what do I get?" and the dismantling of public service, the retirement age reform (& the financing of pensions).... before that there had been demonstrations by health professionals, railroad workers, the "nuits debout" demonstrations, The movement ended in march of 2020 as covid started & I don't know what happened to many people involved in the movement & I'm afraid some of them at least turned towards right-wing populism..

The government is talking about forcing farmers to reduce their amount of livestock for environmental reasons, which spurred many angry farmers to block highways and distribution centers using their tractors. The fact that they can use heavy machinery to block stuff lead to their protest immediately being treated as much more important than pro-environment protests that generally had many more people show up. And of course there was also a softer treatment by police and some alliances with right-wing groups.

How did the Maori population feel about the 'convoy'?

    • @SunnyOnTheInside
      @SunnyOnTheInside 2 года назад +13

@@Dong_Harvey it's complicated. The majority of Māori in positions of influence and standing in their communities are supportive of vaccination. Māori already face disproportionate systemic hurdles when it comes to healthcare and access is a barrier in isolated communities. There have been legitimate mistakes made with the vaccine rollout and a lack of resourcing and understanding of the on the ground realities for Māori communities.
It can't be denied though that there is a significant Māori presence within the Freedumb movement. Factors behind this include disenfranchisement, historic and ongoing state oppression, and the strong evangelical Church presence (marches before this have been led by churches with majority Māori congregations).
The presence of openly white supremacist groups and individuals seems of little concern to most. This is largely a "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" situation, although there is actually a lot more interaction between white supremacists and Māori here than a lot of people may be aware of - New Zealand is a small place. Appropriation of Māori symbols and culture is rampant. Also pervasive is tokenisation of Māori by traditionally left wing antivax types who use the presence of Māori as a shield to avoid having to face up to the obvious bigotry in the movement.
Another notable phenomena was how the crowd got significantly browner as the protest wore on. Māori will face disproportionate legal and social consequences for their involvement in this movement. They are a convenient scapegoat for many to blame for the more violent and intimidating aspects of the protest both within the movement and in the wider community.

Trust me, it’s no different in many other countries. I’m from the UK but moved to NZ 3 years ago. I know as much, or more, about the US then NZ or UK politics these days. If I didn’t use the internet and just watched TV News it would be very different, but I’ve not watched TV news for over 10 years, so I don’t hear local news as much due to the heavy, heavy influence the US has on the internet. Especially being in NZ though, with just 5 million people here there’s not all that much news half the time anyway.

I kind of feel like it should be emphasized that "identity" is still a matter of materialist conditions. Black people may have dark skin but it's the economic disparity forced on them that singles them out into the shared experience of black people for example. They are just subgroups of their respective classes. That's why when we protest racism we don't ask for people to "treat black people better" we mean we need economic measures to end this disparity. Classes develop throughout history, the whole proletariat and bourgeoisie notion is just the main antagonism we currently have. Much like the petite bourgeois is a sub group belonging to the bourgeoisie, the proletariat is also devided in concepts like the labour aristocracy.

great video! as a student living in ottawa, you hit the nail on the head- especially on the notes about the police. I mean just look at the difference between how they dealt with the fairy creek protesters compared to these guys. During the occupation, the honking was incessant in the city- not to mention that the convoy made it so city bus and train routes were cancelled- many people couldn't get to work or school.
I think all of the children at the protest adds an interesting element too- that was one of the reasons the police "couldn't intervene" (not like that stopped them before). A lot of the kids, quite young too- they would have been pulled out of school for weeks to sleep in the back of trucks, breathing in all that car exhaust - with the camps even having certain "kid friendly areas." It was also extremely cold- not the weather you want your kids exposed to, especially if you're not prepared for ottawa winter.
As protests are still cropping up, there is a notable police presence in the downtown now- you could be going out to a bar one night and see five fully geared officers all together, looking scary on patrol.
As a final note- I visited the protest on the first day (for journalistic purposes of course) and there was so much open drinking- the only store open in the Rideau Centre (downtown ottawa mall where the train also connects), that day was the LCBO, (Ontario liquor store). It was incredibly surreal to see all the trucks and all the people. Lots of "don't tread on me" and anti-trudeau flags.
excited for the next video, they're always good food for thought!

Here in Germany, some parents in the antimask/anitivaxx movement also were known to bring their children to protests and stay with them in the front of the group, where things would become violent. That was just mind-boggling to me, how someone can use their small child basically as a human shield and as a prop to show how bad protesters were supposedly being treated. At no leftist protest with even a slight chance of escalation have I ever seen a baby stroller.

As a Calgarian Albertan, you are nailing the Alberta explanation. I got in a shouting match in high school with a kid who said that Wexit was the best way to fix our financial problems. I said something about thinking that was a stupid idea because this was also right after Quebec got like ten feet from actually seceding, but I made the fatal mistake of forgetting I was in YYC AB, and our social classes are biased, to say the least, class laughed at me and teach made a long speech about respecting all ideas and everyone's opinions are important only to make us learn about Wexit for the next two days in class and never once talk about the local economic issues or what our provincial administration was doing. First, there was the crash that started with being the capital of oil production for a while, and then instead of adapting or doing anything new we got a shit premier (eat a dick Jason Kenney) and we're trying to go back into an oil and gas economy even though we have many other more sustainable and eco-friendly things we could become known for. So far for those who don't live here, he has tried to add "Christian Values" and bible passages into the public school curriculum cut funding for arts and all public services (my parents are a bus driver and a librarian and they've both taken substantial pay cuts), cut funding to abortion services, same with our entire mental health system being gutted right before the pandemic hit. Speaking of he's been caught breaking quarantine several times during the start of the pandemic having dinners with oil barons and other slimy rich fucks from our city. He has had no plan and there is NO TESTING AT ALL going on in our province as I type this, even though waste treatment centers have been saying there are increases in the new strain of the virus in our waste systems. We repeatedly cut testing and were the latest province in terms of restrictions every single wave. Finally, this guy Jason if you couldn't hate him any fucking more, he had the balls to try and SELL OUR NATIONAL PARKS to fucking OIL AND LOGGING COMPANIES, or as he put it "Privatizing our national parks system to help with our economy," IE anyone who wants to can buy BANFF, JASPER, WATERTON OR LAKE LOUISE plus more, he did not get it passed thank god but this man is a supervillain genuinely. We are what people always say the texas of Canada, beef and oil being our whole thing, but I wish there was a world where AB didn't go down such a shit path, things could have been better. In Calgary, we had one of the first Muslim mayors if I am not mistaken in Canada but at least AB, and just recently we have elected a female east Indian woman Jodi Gondek to be our mayor. We have a really good arts scene, and one of the larger acting communities in Canada though it is dying somewhat. We are the world's second-largest capital of Dinosaur fossils, and in Drumheller, you can see more fossils on display than almost anywhere on earth, it's really cool. Nature is beautiful, the mountains are always on the horizon even in the city and you can drive through the prairies for 5-6 hours and only pass a single town. Being known for dinosaurs, mountains, beautiful national parks, and the art scene would have been so much nicer than continuing our walk as a metaphorical dinosaur trying to reinvest in oil and gas when the rest of the world is moving into the future without us. Canada as a whole would need a new energy source, Alberta itself would have to phase into other economies that we just do not currently have. The province was doomed from the start to die off a slow and painful death.
I really don't know what art scene you are talking about, both Calgary and Edmonton have really bad public art projects that are largely memes and not taken as serious projects. Ontario has a more rich art scene than we do. We should not be known for the big silver balls, please.

This was incredibly strange to watch because half of what was said would perfectly describe the anti-mandate protests here in New Zealand at the capital. From the fact that the trucker protest had barely any trucks or truckers but lots of nazis, to the police doing nothing and then saying 'oops we left it too long and now we can't do anything', to the protestors refusing to stop even after it was announced that mandates were ending. All throughout the video there were similarities, even in tiny details. It's a real testament to the impressive organisation of these groups that this specific flavour of psycho brain rot was so easily exported and emulated in other countries.

Thanks for articulating the point of the goals(?) and outcomes of the protest of being aligned with the institutions already in place. It's easy to get caught up in the false dichotomy of comparing left protest movements to right protest movements. My dad (Russel Brand fan!) was trying to goad me along these lines and was perplexed when I claimed that the people who could afford to own a rig, travel long distance s and miss work weren't representative of "working class" despite all the pageantry, and your points of the majority of organizers not being involved with trucking, as well as participants not being representative of rank and file/POC truckers are good ones to remember if this comparison comes up again.

Thanks for this. I don't live near the downtown core in Ottawa anymore (I'm still in Ottawa, just a good ways away from the core), but my mom was in a care facility right by the Byward Market (which is right beside Parliament for anyone not aware of Ottawa geography) and my brother had to go downtown several days a week to visit her and do her exercises with her. The staff at the facility were harassed frequently, and often had to stay for extra shifts because staff couldn't make it in to their shifts; the facility itself was vandalized once, and they had to lock the main entrance and post a security guard there to open the door for people after confirming they weren't protestors. The protestors also blocked ambulances from going to the facility (this is the main transportation method for people living in the facility, a longer term recovery/intermediary stop to long term care for people who were unlikely to recover sufficiently to live at home anymore, to get to medical appointments for things like scans and x-rays, or to be transported to hospital if they had an emergency) at times during the almost month they occupied the city. My mother frequently called me and my brother worried about the protests and terrified; this is a woman who survived a brain aneurysm, she didn't deserve anything that happened during the occupation. Obviously, I can't be objective about what happened during the occupation; so yes, I admit I was happy when the police cleared people out and felt a bit of glee about it, even with the methods used.
You're right though, the powers extended, the force used; those are not okay things. So much wasn't happening here, so much wasn't done to help the residents of Ottawa; none of the agencies that had the power to act were acting and it was so frustrating. Ottawa sees many, many protests every year (I worked in the Byward Market for nearly three years and lived on Rideau Street for several years as well, and lived just over the bridge in Vanier for close to a decade as well); many I don't personally agree with, like the anti-abortion protest that happens every year. But I fully believe in and support people's right to protest, whether I agree with their cause or not. This occupation was different. It felt like we were being held hostage for some nebulous end goal and for an unlimited amount of time. It wasn't right, it was horrible.

Thr public health agency of Sweden foresaw the rise of extremist movements and had it as one of the more minor reasons why they were not for prolonged shutdown, prolonged forced masking, etc. They mentioned this is as early as 2020, April, because the head of the public health agency had experience with epidemics across the world from poor to rich countries and their experience that to reach good results, everybody had to be on board.
Here we are. Germany, who was hailed as the golden child in their handling have a death ratio of 1 to 1 with us and a MASSIVE problem with rise in extremism, lack of trust in public agencies etc. I'm certainly very thankful that we let the pros make the decisions during the pandemic and not the politicians trying to score political points. Diseases are not economical questions, a field where politics matter and clearly the left is far superior to *anything* the right has ever vomited up.

It's so true about the "right wing culture in canada imitates american culture" thing. I live in a really weird suburb, it's the pacific northwest/BC, which has the reputation of being very liberal, but its also one of the oldest municipalities in my province and theres literally like historical white families here that and never stopped farming and never "forgot" their settler history like its an uninterrupted family history and some of those families proudly hang up confederate flags. One house I remember had a huge printout of donald trump in their front window that i'm sure cost at least 50 dollars right above a confederate flag.
It's a weird tension between being a very liberal and conservative place.
One of the local churches kept trying to hang pride flags and they were burned at least 2 or 3 times.
I didn't experience any extreme racism growing up here but when it did happen, there was a different vibe to it and it's 100% due to the fact that it was from kids who learned their attitudes towards natives from their settler great grandparents/grandparents/parents.

So I havent watched the whole video as of yet but just a reaction on the slogan at 9:52 (and sorry if some french people already pointed that out^^). The one on the banner "Fin du Monde. Fin du Mois. Même combat" is actually a slogan that emerged from the convergence of struggles between part of the yellow vest movement and part of the ecologist movement and I think would be more accurately translated as "End of the world. End of the month. Same struggle." and has more "ecosocialist" undertones. So it is not really saying that they are not worried about the end of the world but rather that the two problems are worrisome and you cannot solve one without solving the other.

    • @neoqwerty
      @neoqwerty Год назад +1

To be more specific (I'm an amateur translator who focuses on localization, which is to translate idioms and turns of phrases to their equivalent context):
"Fin du mois" specifically is referring to personal finances and expenses at the end of the month-- where it's the roughest if your budget is too small for comfort and you have to tighten your belt. If I was to localize it as english, I'd go for "Wait for doomsday. Wait for payday. We should act." It's not as punchy but that's the best and most concise way I can think to translate the message.
("Making ends meet" is the actual equivalent idiom to "la fin du mois" but it doesn't fit with "end of the world", so I had to change the whole thing to get the message through. I'm no slogansmith though, hah.)
