Altered Beats gets crapped on today, but I think you need view through lens of what was out at the time. It pioneered alot of concepts into a unique gameplay and mythology. The homeport actually has more replay value than most realize. There's a code to adjust the settings, and another to let you pick the beast for each stage, making the playthru radically different. You could absolutely ravage the game by picking dragon for each stage, as the last boss is powerless in the face of this unstoppable monster. Or you can mix it up, as some beast mode make for interests match ups against different bosses. It's a shame we never got true sequel on the Genesis or another sega console, as Altered Beast did laid all the ground work for more, but we never got to see this game evolve further, which is partly why people deride so hard. Everything about the original works as a solid foundation, it just needed to be built up further. If we were given deeper offerings to follow it up, I think this game would been viewed far more favorably. I think Sega will eventually give us a more modern take on it since they seem to be revisiting their back catalog, but only time will tell how soon that happens.
@@mezzb I agree as I think with all lessons learned about gaming between now and then, but the same love and attention to detail the original Altered Beast had, they could make a quality game in the present.
It was very much a product of its time. I played this game when it first came out and loved it. When I played it again years later, I found that it hadn't aged well. Still, it was fun at the time, and it's still an enjoyable game.
I loved Kid Chameleon, but the problem with it was the maze aspect of it that put you in loops of playing the same scenes over and over. If they had done the same idea organized as a metroidvania it might have been an all-timer. If they revive, it should be a metroidvania.
@@abcmaya With the current 2D beat em up rennesance, this would be the perfect time for that too. You could keep all the things that we loved about the original (I'm a werewolf! Punch you to bits!) and fix the flaws like the slow gameplay and lack of depth.

I had fun playing Altered Beast, especially the Arcade version. My main issue was not playing as the beast long enough on some levels, especially level 1.
I’d love to see more of Altered Beast’s many other versions in order to compare them. A great way to start the new year! Thanks for the video and all the work you, and your wife, do for us all! ❤❤❤❤
My buddy got Sonic as his pack in game; I liked Sonic just as a game, not enough to want a SEGA. As quickly as I knew ALTERED BEAST was coming home, I got the good ol Gen Gen and I've been a SEGA fiend ever since (I'm 46).
I got this with my megadrive. Lots of fun and highly iconic. The headless horror (the punching skeleton dude) was the first video game monster I ever tried to make a miniature of.
Altered Beast was the game that got me going to the arcade in the 80s. Not gonna lie: The werewolf transformation on the attract screen literally got me to enter the arcade to learn more.
Altered Beast as an ip needs to be reimagined as an action-RPG which plays somewhat similar to Devil May Cry or the orihinal God of War srerirs, w/big, epic set pieces & gargantuan boss battles. Still remember the day I played the arcade game at my local arcade & later the home port on SEGA Genesis. As much as I enjoyed the game back in the day, the arcadey game design is arcaic & nowadays would be considered too simplistic, especially for a home console title.
good take: I think the concept is good and it is still iconic in a lot of gamers minds; gen x and gen y. If they managed to pull off a really good version of it would be amazing. Something like original God of War with really gorey boss battles seems apropos really. If they make the gameplay good some "just enough" options like alternate paths and mild changes you can make to a linear story are good enough
@@chrisortiz7487 - I could see that as an extra mode in the game where it's basically ab Arena Fighter (think Powerstone) but w/humans turning into powerful beasts w/special, god-like attacks depending on the creature they transform into.
LOVE THIS GAME! MY CHILD HOOD RIGHT THERE ME MY BROTHER & COUSIN WOULD PLAY THIS GAME ALL THE TIME. & I STILL PLAY IT TO THIS DAY! GREAT GAME 🎮 & GREAT CLASSIC. 👍
In spite of its flaws, i still love this game, and i find it quite fun because of its sword and sorcery meets horror greek setting, its challenging yet simple gameplay, and of course it's gimmick of transforming into beasts. Still, i do hope that one day we'll get a remake of Altered Beast but more faithful to the original games theme (unlike the forgotten 2000s reboot released only in Europe and Japan). But i also hope it's an M rated game just to see the savage carnage unfold as the beasts maul enemies throughout the game. 🐺🐲🐻🐯
i still go back and play this game to this day because of the cheesiness factor, also the sound effects are funny. Play them on streams and it still gets a lot of laughs. Original Golden Axe games have are in this same realm but the + is they are more fun to play
I got this game, and the Sega Genesis, for my 7th birthday in 1994. My Brother and I would replay, and STILL replay, this game over and OVER and OVER! This is one of the greatest Sega games I have ever played! Idc how short it is, how few transformations there are, or how atrocious the PS2 sequel is (tho I never got to play that one or the one on the GameBoy), this Genesis game is AWESOME! I am HYPED that Sega announced this series will get a new game, and I am beyond impatient to get my hands on the next installment! As a kid this game was a favorite! I can still remember playing it on my tv with 13 channels and you had to wiggle the chord in the back to get it to come in clear!
This game was playing on a large screen tv in a Brendle's department store back in like 1988 advertising the sega genesis. I was around 7 or 8 yrs old and was blown away by it.
Altered Beast one of very 1st arcades I played as kid in 89! I drawn to the metamorphism of animals total influence for me gowning up! This game still has a lot of potential to make it even more fun for new generations to play! I love to see remake with RPG mechanic and combo chain to this game!
Compared to games that came later, Altered Beast is not that great, but when it came out, the graphics were pretty impressive compared to what else was on the market at the time. Even though the Genesis version wasn't great to play it was impressive to see 16 bit graphics at home. Those juicy 16 bit graphics convinced me to get a Genesis early in its life cycle, long before Sonic came along
It's a great idea for a game. I loved the intro screen, and transformation sequence. Transforming is cool, but I wish there were weapons. The game feels like a side scrolling shooter, but looks like a brawler.
Sega knew something we the public didn't know about this property... Simplicity works. Yes it's slow and very lacking but it must work enough for it to Rise from the grave and power up as not only a Funko pop but a full remastered game.
Throughout my entire childhood I thought the animals that dropped the power ups were bulls. It wasn't until it was pointed out to me years later that I realized they were two headed wolves
There was attempts, and even a game boy advance version , but you'd think Sega would made more of an effort to cash in on their arcade smash when it was hot on the one of their home systems.
Never had any sega product growing up except game gear, I only ever played this game in arcades, was so loud everyone would look when you would start it up in a restraunt
i always wonder why sega and certain people love this game so much. I dont think its bad but its really super hard on the genesis. i always just remember this game for introducing that chicken beast that you get to ride in golden axe.
To these days my question is still: Why both the werewoves in Altered Beast and the werewolves in Rainbow Islands shoot fireballs? Where does the werewolves shooting fireballs thing come from?
It’d be a great vr game translated for modern sensibilities. With the option for classic game mechanics with a larger sandbox coupled with a more demanding expectations ie controls leveling etc while keeping the spirit of an arcade game
