If you're wondering why Cherno Alpha, Crimson Typhoon and Stryker Eureka went down so easily, it's because those kaiju were made to counter all three of them. When newt drifted with the Kaiju he got information, but so did the kaiju, which allowed them to design Kaiju to kill Cherno and Typhoon and then disable Stryker.
For people in the comments also confused, Kaiju blood is super toxic. So using blades and missiles and swords in the ocean is a much safer option than using them in the city where they kaiju bodies will eventually be taken away, AND where construction will have to be done to the buildings. There are some missiles they use in one of the scenes because they needed to take it down quickly.
Theres many reasons they could not be using weapons. The story putpose has to do with the Kaiju blood being toxic, so they tey to minimize the amount being spread around. However, you could also look at it as, do you use your biggest weapon in video games first? Or do you wait to use it until you really need it? 😂
This movie did so well with its action narrative especially with all of Del Toros direction for the sound effects and combat logic (not the scientific logic in specific but for the action):

As a pacific rim fan I’m so happy we finally got to see a reaction to this amazing movie
they wont use the plasma cannon, unless they have a 100% hit, so getting a hold of it first, it the right move before shooting...
Not gonna lie I miss this movie 😭 they messed the universe up so bad

Absolutely loved this movie, shame it never got a sequel
I love Pacific Rim. It's corny and fire all at once lol
One of the most underrated movies. This is better than people give credit for.

couple of explanations for the confusion you had with fighting tactics.

There is in fact solid science behind why they don't use the plasma cannon at range.
This movie is so awesome

I think they don't use the plasma cannons or swords very often because it could get their radioactive blood everywhere or something.
There were no giant guns for 2 reasons.
the reason they didnt use the sword from the start is because its stated that the kaiju have acidic blood and so its kinda a last resort
