Hi there! I'm a 37 yo Brazilian guy learning to play the drums and also a Ramones fan. Your video helped me a lot! Thanks so much! Keep up the good work
Great and thorough video! I'm a guitar player, but also a producer and it is always interesting to study how different things work. Extra points for not saying "Hi guys!" in the beginning.
Thank you, this is a great tutorial for (ahem..) older self-learners who did some things along the way but want to focus on technique. It's easy to get lost with all the online drumming studs that just show off and I can't do anything with it because I'm not or ever going to be at that level. Good stuff, thanks!
Very well explained. I taped my ride cymbal too to diminish the wash and get more ping. If you watch old Tommy footage you'll see he didn't really use the ride as a ping ride. Only when he hit the bell like in Beat on the Brat. Marky started to use that finger technique when he started touring with his own band. Nowadays when his hihat is open he doesn't even do the 8th notes anymore. Very lame. I'm too old now to play the drums and gave my kit to my son 😊 Keep it up!
i just got my drums today im damn excited to start playing , and i thought the ramones style would be the best to start with i thought itd be really easy but damn
There is a point where you get the technique down and it starts to cooperate more with you. You still gotta keep the stick moving but it requires a lot less concentration and effort. Kinda like when an engine is at the right speed and the transmission can kick into cruising gear
Very interesting! As a kid, I knew some very adept drummers; friends of my musically gifted brothers who seemed to naturally be able to play drums very well, without lessons. Obviously Tommy was that sort of drummer who had an innate ability to play, yet beyond that, invented the Ramones style. I think this is a great tutorial for anyone who plays or is learning to play drums, whether a Ramones fan or not.
I'm sure that won't be the only battle of the bands ever. Thanks for the comment and please come post your cover on the other The Ramone social media sites
This is a great vid. A little late for me. No internet or vids had me eventually breaking through the pain barrier, but I was a hard hitter and stiff on top of it. Every song of an hour set..non stop as well..always came close to lock up near or on last tune. A few gigs on the last tune, when I started lockin up, drove me to a solution, I picked up my bass drum over head and tossed it...at least the show ended well instead of bad....Thx for the vid brother.
@@rockytheramone5604 Not too bad economical, I was working hard and making good money, playing bottom end Pearl Export kits ,so replacement cost wasn't too bad, always worth not ending the last tune locking up...hahaha.. the pain and money your advice would have saved me.
Great job!! It’s interesting that when I watch Tommy play the high hats he seems to hit the edges of the hats with the barrel of the stick. His hi hats are so tall that there is no contact (I think) from the tip of the stick to the surface of the top Hi hat.
@@rockytheramone5604 Right! Have you ever heard these? In addition to the every-other beat emphasis of Johnny's guitar and Tommy's hi hats, it almost sounds like he's applying to the bass drum on the double hits ruclips.net/video/83fKq-5RjIE/видео.html&start_radio=1&t=8

I agree that the Mohler technique is a great way to do fast punk beats, but in this video of Marky Ramone it looks like he's using french grip with little arm movement. I'm not sure if that's representative of how he'd play at shows. ruclips.net/video/X2BIMRqV4s4/видео.html

The "Loco Live speed". Nice phrase, and nice shirt btw.

If you keep the HI Hat higher, it helps to keep your arm in a straight line
If you have it lower, you are bending your arm more than you need
