The story is Silvester Stallone sold his dog Butkus for $50 because he was poor. When his script for Rocky got accepted and became a movie he found the new owner and asked to buy him back. The new owner asked for $15,000 and a part in the movie. The dog in the movie is his real dog. The point Silvester Stallone is making with the story is life deals you blows that knock you down. True winners get back up and don't stay down.
Did the guy play a role in the movie?
Stallone still has the two turtles today... :)
I see those numbers made it into the script. Gazo gave Rocky $50 for his date with Adrian and Paulie made $3,000 for the Shamrock Meat logo on the robe. Wonder where Stallone came up with those numbers?
@@TCT92Graphics You know, I forgot that about the story. That is so interesting. I believe Silvester Stallone put the story together from a few real life events around him. Rocky's relationship with his trainer probably came from his relationship with his Father.
@@Caseytify no. I met him. We ate turtle soup.
It's always so heartwarming when people discover 'Rocky' is a love story first and foremost. Without doubt one of my favourite ever films.
A great love story
And the reason I was not impressed with it. It couldn't decide what it was. It's an okay film but never grabbed my heart. A "watch once" film for me.
@Kim I guess I can understand that. If I’m personally any indication, many like it as a love story because it’s real. Not flowery.
@@kimghanson you must like shitty movies. 😂
If you think about it, Rocky is like a Cinderella story for athletes. He started off struggling through life and in the end, he’s with his true love.
Uh, I believe James J. Braddock got that label first.
Ellie: “Its a love story”
I know your joking but I think your actually right. I believe Stallone once said that Rocky is actually intended as a romance movie.
Yes, this is a love story and a story of personal triumph with a little boxing on the side.
it`s actually an underdog story inspired by the match michael stallone "sylvester is actually his middle name".saw when chuck wepner,a complete unknown went 15 rounds with muhamed ali.he turned down $250,000 dollars for the rights to his screenplay because he wanted to play the part of rocky
Fun Fact: Stallone’s father played the man who rings the bell at the fight with Apollo, and his brother played the lead street singer.
I thought Stallone mother hated her husband
and that dog was actually stallones real dog
His brother also wrote the song along with other songs in his movies.
i didnt know that, thanks for the info👏
@@darksoulsspeedrunner5912 no way, cool
Ellie may have been trying to be ironic but she was correct. It is a love story.
Film fact: The boxing rounds were shot in reverse order.
The last round had all the damage makeup on and every round after that, they would remove some makeup and shoot the next scene.
By the time they shoot the first round, the fighters are clean and blemish free.
This is why there's an Oscar for *best cinematography!*
Best film editing*, but yes, in general, this film has one of the best editing a ever
*Everybody* in Philadelphia in the 1970s wore Converse high-tops...White, Black, Hispanic, grandmothers, postal carriers, priests. Everyone.
Rocky and Adrian greatest on-screen love story ever! It's always amusing watching millennials react to Rocky's Converse they don't realize back then shoe technology was not a thing and everyone wore Converse.
All I remember is them and Pro Keds. Don't even know if there were any other name brand options.
@@MoMoMyPup10 Nikes were around at the time, having been developed in the early 70's. Phil Knight prior to developing Nikes was a small distributor for the Japanese shoe manufacture Onitsuka Tiger, so those had been around since the mid 60's. Adidas and Puma have been shoe rivals since the 50's. However, they all were small fry compared to Converse.
@@tarmaque Google much 🤔
@@blackpowder99 Nah, born and raised in the Northwest in the 70's.
“ROCKY” is the ONLY movie that ends with the words, “I LOVE YOU!”💜🍸
45:30 - A split decision in boxing is when the 3 judges don’t agree on who won or lost. A winner is decided when 2 of the 3 judges it’s for the same fighter based on a buildup of points during the rounds. In this case, 2 of the 3 judges thought Apollo won, which I’d agree with. While he was taking as much damage as Rocky, Apollo was shown to be landing more punches.
if the fight were real it would be one of the best in history, apollo also won very well by points
@UC4hz7THBEibt78nT94crncw They call it a split decision because the judges are divided into 2 categories: who won, and who lost. Thus, they’re “split” amongst themselves.
Rocky went the DISTANCE !!! he ONLY wanted to prove he “wasn’t just another bum from the neighborhood”. So he won in his heart. ❤️
Interesting fact. The man who played Mickey also played the Penguin on the Batman tv series. He's also on the "Grumpy Old Men" movies. So good.
Nathan Padilla His name was Burgess Meredith.
Sylvester Stallone always said Rocky was a love story not a boxing story. Rocky's goal was not to win the fight but go the distance (all 15 rounds), which no fighter had done against Creed. Creed won the fight on a split decision, 2 judges voted for Creed and 1 judge voted for Rocky. What makes this movie so great is that Rocky didn't win. Usually movies have the underdog win but not this one!
Rocky's goal and hope was to go the distance to prove himself to himself....and the thing that he truly cared about is Adrian.
Rocky also accomplished something else that no other fighter had ever done and that was to knock Apollo down.
Bill Conti is a composer who wrote the music specifically for Rocky.
This and the Rambo franchise helped launch Silvester Stallone's film career and made him a superstar. The next three are great as well
A very underrated love story with some boxing at the end. Next up, Rocky II--the love story continues.
Ellie is the heart and Michelle is the brains of The Homies. What an awesome treat to watch them react to this movie.
This is the story of a man who redeems himself from the life he led, the whole film revolves around the lives of people who are losers in life, the mafia guy, the girl who hangs out with unsavory people, the shy girlfriend oppressed by her brother and her boss shop.
So when Rocky had this opportunity for him to last 15 rounds with the world champion, used to beating everyone in a few rounds it was the real victory of his life, proof that he wasn't just a suburban bully.
and let's say a realistic story, in fact when the final verdict arrived he was happy and just wanted to hug his girlfriend
There is one thing I would share with you on the making of Rocky. When Talia Shire (Adrian) and Sylvester Stallone (Rockey) did the first kiss scene, she was actually sick with the flu. Stallone was aware of it and still decided to do the kiss scene with her. Of course, a day or two later, Stallone did get sick haha.
No Mick was telling Rocky to stay down cause he took a beating and couldn’t stand it anymore. So he was asking Rocky to stay down and save himself.
It’s funny how nobody has the emotional intelligence to understand Mick, except for Rocky. Mickey had Nobel reasons for not training Rocky, any COACH worth his SALT, won’t train someone professionally who isn’t focused. And Micky is better than most people when you understand even though Rocky didn’t earn his shot, he wanted to help him succeed anyway, he set aside all his pride. He’s a real one. Everyone likes YES MEN these days 😅
Another criminally underrated gem Boxing 🥊 movie is the 1992
" Gladiator " with Cuba Gooding James Marshall Brian Dennehy
Good story fights and soundtrack
I'm so surprised it's overlooked with no reaction
The steps Rocky runs up and down,is an art museum in Philadelphia.
Great reaction ladies please continue to watch all Rocky movies... you will love it❤
rocky and Adsrian complemented each other perfectly.
the run up the steps was by accident - not planned - just a suggestion as they drove around in the van looking big for Philadelphia sites to film the training...
We celebrated our 200th Birthday in 1976 for a whole year. That is why Apollo was dressed as George Washington and Uncle Sam at the fight. P.S. I don't think they realized his Girlfriend was the *Sister* in the Godfather.
@25:20 "He doesn't want to give her sperm". That's the best summary I've ever heard of that entire scene.
the dock is the Delaware River - he is running near South Street - Penn's Landing...good area
I love how more reactors on RUclips are watching this for the first time. Some continue on cause they wanna see the rest of the saga and some just stop here and wait to see if they’ll watch the rest
Still one of the best movies ever made
The Rocky franchise is NOT a "boxer movie". It is a LIFE STORY of someone who just happens to have a career as a boxer. His "professional life" does have important points to go over, but it is his life OUT of the ring that is focused on more than anything else.
You two are some of the best reactors in my sub list.
the trainer did not cut his eye but he cut his eyelid to release blood so Rocky could see, yeah it is a brutal sport my uncle was a boxer and he gave and took some beatings, he loved to box..
Boxing used to be this brutal, but with all the head injuries they changed the rules a bit, there are 10 rounds instead of 15, and the referee can stop the fight if it’s getting to brutal or the manager throws in a white towel which signifies that they give up
There is 12 rounds in a professional boxing match in some cases it can be 4,6,8 or 10 though.
Girls you have to do all the rocky films and the creed films.
Rocky is such a great movie!! Rocky did lose the match, but he went the distance.
3:02 Sylvester Stallone, to this very day, *still* has those turtles.
I LOVE IT THAT IN JUST ABOUT EVERY REACTION TO ROCKY PEOPLE COMMENT ABOUT THE CONVERSE SNEAKERS/TENNIS SHOES!! 😝😝😝
WELL, BELIEVE IT OR NOT, THERE WAS A TIME WHEN CONVERSE WAS ALL WE HAD IN THE WAY OF "SPORT SHOE"!!
YOU WORE CLEATS FOR FOOTBALL AND BASEBALL AND CONVERSE FOR EVERYTHING ELSE!! PRETTY MUCH UP TO THE 1980's!!
I love the girl on the left.. AT 28 minutes.. she says "He's not taking seriously his opponents" .. THATS WHEN I LOVED HER !
His first words after going the distance “ where’s your hat?”
Nobody won by knockout it went the distance so the fight goes to the judges. There's 3 judges 2 of them scored it for *Creed* 1 scored it for *Rocky* meaning *Creed* won by split decision. But *Rocky* went the distance with the champ also the first to knock the champ down
"gonna fly now" also known as the "Rocky theme."
HOLLYWOOD used to be on top about masterpieces in the 70's ; now It's locked. RIP Stallone.
FUCK YEAH!!!! The Rocky Saga is my favorite ever!! (you can skip 5) lol ... watching these will make the Creed movies SO MUCH BETTER!!!
Rocky 5 is the weakest of the film series, that is true, however there are still some great scenes in that film. And its still better than a lot of other films that are considered good.
Not really it shows how much he grows as a trainer
south paw...south Jersey....such a classic line of dialogue
So glad you reacted to Rocky. One of my favorite movie series.
Those"steps"he runs are to an art museum.
The actress is Talia Shire the sister of Francis Ford Coppola. She is also in "The Godfather" series.
Everyone acts surprised when Rocky initially says 'no' to the offer to fight Apollo. According to the film, none of Apollo's opponents had ever manage to last the entire fight against him, and he hadn't even been knocked down in his professional career. A guy with a record/history like Rocky's going into a fight with a man like that, he stands a fair chance of getting seriously injured. Possibly killed.
And for the record, Converse Chuck Taylors suck as running shoes. They're just canvas with thin rubber soles. They provide very little cushion or protection when you're running.
"Look how he's dressed like a pimp!"
Apollo is dressed as Uncle Sam, an American propaganda cartoon figure that was prominently used during World War II as a recruitment tool and to drum up public support for the war. He was commonly seen on posters, wearing a red-white-and-blue top hat and tailcoat, pointing outward at the viewer with text saying "I WANT YOU FOR THE U.S. ARMY". His name "Uncle Sam" was derived from the initials "U.S.", short for "United States". Ever since, he's been associated with American patriotism, and the name "Uncle Sam" is still used as a nickname for the federal government.
I love the way Michelle says turtle. It’s adorable 😊
Oof on the need for re-upload. I hope you get to the others. Rocky IV was my particular favorite of this great series.
Mine too 🫱🏾🫲🏽
Btw, you are right about managers telling fighters to stay down to rest.. Usually till the 8 or 9 count.. But I think Mickey wanted him to stay down to save him any more punishment..
One of the guys singing on the street corner is Sylvester Stallone,s brother frank.had a hit song called"far from over".
Rocky is not a boxing movie, it's a great love story about a boxer.
27:00 - This is actually Sylvester Stallone's personal dog. He had him star in the movie with him.
THANKS for reviewing this and getting back to movies. there are 4-5 more in the rocky series but this one is the best IMO. please react to the following great movies....road to perdition, rainman, psycho ( 1960), planet of the apes ( 1968), twister, and scarface. THANKS!!,
Sylvester Stallone always said the movie is a love story with a bit of boxing in it
Split decision is how many punches each fighter threw, the most wins.
I always thought this film was a great father and son tale. When you watch the scene of Mickey at Rocky’s apartment, yes you can read into that as an opportunist, but I always thought that Mickey really cared for Rocky, but became disappointed in his life choices. The fight offer is his chance at reconciling and trying to keep this kid he’s watched for 10 years from getting taken advantage of and thrown away like he did.
Her: Rocky won! He beat the champion! Me: *sweats nervously*
A little known fact that a year or so before Stallone started filming Rocky. He stared in a porn movie. After the success of Rocky the porn movie he was in got renamed The Italian Stallion.
You have to watch all the Rocky and Creed movies. Rocky Balboa is a character that stays in your heart.
HOMMIES, you have to watch the entire catalog of the Rocky movies, they just keep getting better. But please don’t wait that long.
Peace and love FROM JOEY FROM THE BRONX
no they don't
@@MoMoMyPup10 I'm guessing you don't understand english very well. he is not commanding that they "must" watch them, he is saying that they should watch them.
And they should.... one of the best film series to ever come out of hollywood on par with star wars and MCU and the godfather
@@chandie5298 Did it ever occur to you that the response was directed at statement that the movies in the series keep getting better?
@@Joe-tm2qp nope, that didn't occur to me at all. I may have interpreted it wrong.... wouldn't be the first time. Thanks for the heads up.
EDIT: If that was the case then I'd agree... my favorite 2 of the series are Rocky and Rocky 2
@@chandie5298 Agree. 1 & 2 are the best. The first film is a classic and arguably the best film but over the years, I think I’m starting to prefer the second.
10:14 A whole number of people "discovered" America, before Christopher Columbus. But popular folklore is the Columbus discovered it, since that's the one that "stuck" in the minds of Europeans. Asians crossed the Bering Strait probably 20,000 years ago or so, becoming the first people to truly settle the land. Polynesians may very well have made it to the Americas. But most of American history is from the perspective of Europeans.
From Europe, the Vikings, under Leif Erikson, found North America, but that knowledge wasn't widespread and may have mostly died with their settlement. In terms of putting the New World on the map for Europeans, Christopher Columbus was pretty important. An Italian by birth, but working for the Spanish, Columbus sailed his ships to the West hoping to find a new trade route to India/China. Finding land, the thought he had found India, which is why the native people living there were called...Indians. So, basically, Columbus not knowing where he was, lead to the native people being called the same name, Indian, as people from half the world away, for hundreds of years!
But in common parlance, to most Europeans of the time and for most of American folklore, Christopher Columbus "discovered" America, when he landed in the West Indies islands in 1492.
5:16 "cozy and friendly". yep, that's Philadelphia in the 1970s. 🙂❤️
31:30 Yes, the song is from Rocky and it was nominated for Best Original Song at the 49th Academy Awards.
The color of shorts matters as it often reflects your country of origin and has a lot of pride tied to it. It mattered to Rocky, but the promoter could care less because Rocky was just there to ‘put on a show’ and not have a real fight.
Rocky 2 preparem o lenço porque vão chorar bastante, é puro coração
Absolutely right!!!
Absolutely.
Apollo won, but Rocky went the distance. That's all he wanted to validate to himself that he wasn't just another bum from the neighborhood.
The Rocky series is a great story, weird at times but it's how it is.
They originally reacted to this MONTHS ago on Patreon. Lets get'em to react to Rocky 2 guys!
I can't wait for you to get to Rocky 4 but I think you'll enjoy Rocky 2 & 3. You're right Rocky is a love story not necessarily a boxing movie
12:33 - Yes, it is a love story.
Sylvester Stallone still has his pet turtles 🐢. They have a long life span. (My tortoises will probably outlive me). 🐢
You are correct. The movie is a love story, which takes place around boxing.
You didn’t know “Gonna Fly Now” is the main theme from Rocky???
Thumbs up for "People don't know when to say sorry."
This movie is one of my favorite! Really good
well about time! ❤️🎭🥊🥰
thank you patreons 👍🏼✅
There are 3 judges at a fight a split decison is a 2-1 victory
The most beautiful chapter of the Rocky saga is the fourth, because in Rocky 4 he fights against the Soviet Ivan Drago avenging the death of Apollo.
Rocky is a love story that happens to have a boxing match in it.
"He's dressed like a pimp". That's funny!
The songs from Rocky
Rocky didn't win, but he got really, really close. Rocky 2 is a fantastic sequel, I think you'll love it.
The song was written for this movie.
You guys *have to* watch _"Rocky II"_ ... Rocky re-fights Apollo (& it's even _more_ epic!), and the Rocky-&-Adrian love story *continues!*
You two are *guaranteed* to absolutely _love_ the Rocky series ... despite the pain! Although _"Rocky IV"_ is definitely painful to watch - but it's worth it! (For both the fighting scenes _and_ the love-story!)
P.S. - it's interesting that you found the scenes of Rocky punching the sides of beef to be so ... disturbing? ... ugly? disgusting? It's actually good training; punching a solidly-built guy feels similar to that, so you get used to it. Used to both the simple sensation, and the pain of repeatedly punching something that firm, 'cause after 50 or 60 punches your hands start to get sore ... after 150 or 160 - either your hands get numb, or they're so _very_ sore that you have to concentrate hard to get through it; either way it's tough to keep your fists balled-up.
Ellie, you are correct. Sylvester Stallone said it’s a love story.
1. Actually Rocky doesn't qualify as a Heavy Weight. He doesn't weigh enough.
2. Adrian looks Way better without her glasses.
3. Stallone kept the turtles and Butkus. The turtles are still alive. Butkus, not so much this thing
is 40+ years old.
4. You can't blame Rocky for working for the hustler because he made more doing that than boxing.
5. $150,000 just to fight
6. Both of your reactions to the cut scene was epic.👌 I was waiting for it. 😎
7. I loved Burgess Meredith A good first time/share is the original "Clash of the Titans" with him.
8. A good First time/share for Stallone is Tango and Cash with Kurt Russell.
9. Welcome to this entertaining rabbit hole.
The nasal spray is a vast-constrictor, and minimizes bleeding
I suppose Creed's hat in the ring is like a pimp hat, seeing that it's made to mimic Uncle Sam's big hat.
I've watched many of your reactions and you crack me up. The lady in the black makes me laugh often tearing up and getting emotional so easy haha. Keep them coming
Thumbs up just for the "cut me, Mick!" moment.
Sly's real life son that died plays in part 5.
$40 might not sound much but today equivalent would be around $200
Rocky 2 please!!!
This movie is so incredibly well written.
