- Hall & Oates' "I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)" figures heavily in our collective life soundtrack, and, unsurprisingly, it's equally consequential as a turning point for the insurgence of synthesizers in popular music. Here, William Kurk breaks down the sounds and techniques that make the #SynthSounds of this pop classic an ephemeral favorite.

William Kirk is 100% legit. Please keep him as the host. I think you guys should get a little darker and show us synth sounds NIN closer.
Agree, you can't do a synth series and not have NIN tunes detailed.
I completely agree.
I absolutely agree and I hope that William comes back for another season of his tutorials! I did a little bit of resarch on Mr. Kurk (yes, it's indeed "Kurk"), aided by williamkurk.com/ He's released several solo albums in the last 15 years (all are available on streaming services, e.g. Spotify) and there's at least one podcast interview with William: It's at makingmoneyinthemusicbiz.com/podcast-52-interview-with-pianist-composer-singer-william-kurk/
@@drumtravelfun break out the emu emax sampler!
ruclips.net/video/zxRpZGQnXcI/видео.html Watch this video, and you'll understand why im shocked to read your comment :D an actual mashup of I cant go for that and Closer!
i would really appreciate a synth sounds of Zapp & Roger - More Bounce to the Ounce, love to see how it was arranged.
This song has been sampled numerous amount of times, that's how valued it is
I had this "45" when I was a kid in the early 1980s. Great to see William reverse-engineering the song... great stuff.
You could use the same basic rig and do Joe Jackson's "Stepping Out" --- and it would be amazing.
No doubt about it. It's the Drumbeat! Classic. Can we please have a lesson on Pink Floyd - Welcome to the Machine. I have the guitar sorted, but the synth is way out there. Or even SOYCD Part II on the same album if you are feeling brave.
I can find everything needed to create these sounds on Reverb.com. Except that sweet Members Only jacket! When will Reverb start selling clothes???
i like my bass in my face all day
Have you guys done Cars by Gary Numan? If not, I'm sure that would be a fun song to dissect
How about the More Synth song same Album called Metal?
Ditto Cars Gary Newman
P.S. I did a cover (ALL INSTRUMENTS and vocals) of the CARS “Let the Good Times Roll” By Giant 1 Available iTunes, Spotify etc. (might be on RUclips)
Any Gary Numan song would be awesome!!
Need to do a Gary Numan song, master of synths.
Can you make a Synth sounds video every day til the end of time thanks
What good is it if Bob Fossil isn't there to dance to it? I mean, the guy merges with this song in a way that they make each other better. Bob Fossil IS this Song. This song IS Bob Fossil. And he can't go for that.
William trashtalks the CR78 for being unreliable...
*Prophet V craps itself on camera*
Please do everybody wants to rule the world by tears for fears!!!
Neal Gustafson Hoping It 😅
Neal Gustafson he uploaded EWTRTW today, how did u knew??!!!!
Luis Hernandez. So that awful video was your fault? Please stop encouraging him. His videos are full of errors, sloppy analysis, and lousy sound recreations. Hmmmm....maybe because he wasn't even there. I can't go for THAT.
That beat sounds very similar to Michael Jacksons the way you make me feel and leave me alone.
Bass in yo face here we go 👌🏽🎶😜
tdrum21 Haha, this guy is awesome.
Do some Prince! I Would Die 4 U!!!
Already
The drum pattern is ROCK AND ROLL 1 combined with another one of the presets which you can hear on the original. It was them recorded via a microphone in the room - coming out of the studio speakers.
The bass part and the organ style pads are indeed a Korg CX3.
The bells and strings are all Prophet5.
There is no rhodes or any other keyboards on this track.
The multitrack stems are pretty easy to hunt down - there is not much too this song at all, which makes it so amazing.
Very nice. It's almost there. That Rhodes arpeggio is missing a note at the bottom of the run, though. I think it's a G in one bar, then F on the next.
clinke2007, I think you're correct. The "Rhodes" arpeggio ends with "G" the first time, and "F" every other time. In fact, it's pretty easy to confirm this by watching the original Hall and Oates video. That part is played on a Prophet 5 in the video, and the alternating G and F are clearly seen.
Correct.
Except it's not a Rhodes sound. Prophet 5 all the way.
@@UnionThugg the prophet 5 he played sounded alot more like the original minus the aftertouch at the end
“Only you” by Yaz
“Don’t you want me” by human league for next vid?
I want to hear the full song only with the haunted Prophet.
Get me some Axel F. synth sounds.
Stand back Stevie Nicks would be great! Especially since Prince played the synth parts!
WIlliam Kirk! I like your presentation, very light and entertaining. Well done!
Very nice. But what really makes the sound pop ... is that Members Only jacket.
Tim Satterwhite Not a Daryl Hall thing. Get you a slim-lapel dinner jacket, tshirt, chinos, and some loafers.
Great video! Definitely want to hear more. It doesn't even need to be an entire song, maybe you could just pick a really iconic synth part, like a lead or a pad, and show how to regenerate it on real analog hardware from scratch? For example maybe the pad from Brian Eno's "An Ending" or the lead from "Frankenstein" by Edgar Winter Group?
"...but we can go for that" This guy kills me
You gotta touch some Prince stuff. Sister. I need Sister or Controversy
Have about Level42 Lessons in Love, or Something About You? Thanks for now for the great tips!
this series has been fuckin dope. thanks dude.
Great session! I would really like to know what synthesizer was use on ABC song “Be near me”. I been looking for this song for about thirty years and now I’m interested to know what instruments was use to make this song.
Thank you
But who is playing that high strings part? A string ensemble? A Hohner or Arp Solina? 😊
This guy’s voice sounds like Hannibal Buress lol
Could you do “There’s a light that never goes out “ by the Smiths. That would be amazing 😉
Thank you Mr. Kirk for this wonderful series! I've enjoyed them all so far, and I'm looking forward to your next installment!
Like that settling pixie dust part with the Fender-Rhodes. The genius of Hall & Oates was that they used the cheesy Roland rhythm machine with irony not only on this tune but on "Kiss On My List" as well. Side note: Ron Sexsmith in "All In Good Time" uses a drum machine in the intro and first verse and then a full on drum set comes in along with bass guitar. At this point the song starts going deep. Lesson: Drum machine as compositional tool. ruclips.net/video/yCVAiaoqwgg/видео.html
Definitely keep doing this. Great study in how fantastic music featuring synths gets made.
These have been great so far. I would love to see some Oingo Boingo please!
This series is incredible and William is god damn awesome. Please keep doing these these are the best thing on YT right now.
What a great song choice!!!!!!!!!
Oh my god YES!
Can you deconstruct "Two Tribes" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood?
Love these videos !!!
I've listened to this song so many times in the last few days, your timing is perfect for me.
Every time is the right time for Hall & Oates.
Sorry, but you're out of touch, I'm out of time.
this channel is so awesome
Greetings earthlings. Such a great series.
Awesome video, thanks for sharing!
Hall & Oates made my life better!! ❤
Loved this video and I love Hall and Oates. Another great video could be synth sounds of "One on One," Hall and Oates's underrated masterpiece.
Lucas Wuensch according to interviews from Daryl, they used 3 instruments: his trusty Prophet 5, the Linn drum machine, and T-Bone's superb bassline.
P Kranz that baseline has a temptations it was just my imagination feel to it. Dreamy
Hate to get picky but that high part isnt a Rhodes - its a Prophet 5. As is the organ/pad sound in the intro, of which the chords you are playing are not quite right - like i said, picky.
Excellent video! More of these would definitely be great! :)
I know nothing about all that, but I love the song. That's what brought me here. Interesting.
Thanks for all these videos guys; you had me at "It's My Life!" I thought they might've used a Yamaha CP30 on this. I heard they used that on "You Make My Dreams Come True" and it had an organ-ish piano sound. "Take On Me" would be a good tune to examine for synths used!
How about Emerson Lake & Powell Touch and Go ? Or Asia's Voice Of America on Astra ? If there was a 3rd Choice for me break down Genesis 2nd Home By The Sea on Self Title Genesis Album....
Love the Demo of Hall & Oates they are on Tour BTW....
Oh forgot New Wave Berlin No More Words or Metro..... For fun could be Missing Person's Destination Unknown on Spring Session M Album....
Sorry Huge 80's Fan.....
Loving this series! The tones are really spot on!
Would love to see Depeche Modes ”Behind the Wheel” or a-Ha’s ”Take On Me”.
Or just some wonderful DX7 songs!
Damn, William Kirk! This is the best instruction I've found from Reverb, keep it up homie!
I wish they would show Will working on a track, something thats his own, something that he has to put a couple synths over. Starting from scratch, so we can see his process for coming up with his own sounds.
How can you do any 70s and 80s synth sounds with starting with Blondie, all their hits have amazing keyboard parts like, X-offender, Dreaming, Telephone, Atomic and of course Heart of Glass.
I just stumbled across this upload, not even looking for music but here I am. I love love love, taking a song from my childhood (I'm 43) and breaking it down piece by piece. Great video! Gonna check out what else is here now. Thanx!
So glad you did this one!
P.S. Nice jacket. Members Only! From Chess King at the mall. Between the Orange Julius and the arcade.
Working with vintage Midi is a PITA!
My Oberheim DX has factory Midi but I'll be danged if it likes talking to my laptop. Best drum machine beside the DMX and the Linn though :-)
This tutorial is very helpful! Can you do Duran Duran’s A View To A Kill synth and fx sounds? Thanks in advance Reverb guys!
One of the first big synth songs was Don’t you Want Me by the Human League released in the US early 1982 but there were synth songs released before that like the Hall and Oates song here. Synths and saxes were a big thing in the 80’s. A lot of singers and bands then had sax players. Like Hall and Oates, there was a sax solo in I can’t go for that and Maneater. And Bruce Springsteen had the late Clarence Clemons as a sax player. I like music from the 50’s to the 80’s not so much the 90’s and 2000’s. 80’s music was like feel good music but 90’s and 2000’s music is depressing to me.
What happened at 3:20!?!?! Does anybody watch these before they are posted?! Hilarious! Runaway drum machine and synth bass. Otherwise, great idea for a video!
I'm curious. How come you used the Prophet 5 instead of the 6? And, who programmed that delicious-sounding pitch envelope?
Please make a demo for Send Me An Angel by Real Life. That haunting female backing vocal I suspect was from a Jupiter-8, though I've never been able to find any documentation on what or who it is anywhere.
Hi William, I absolutely love your channel. Im by now means a professional, but you have helped me immensely. May i ask if you could break down Grandmaster Flash's "The Message"? Keep up the awesome work and tutorials.
I am astonished at how Daryl Hall came up with that magical Rhodes arpeggiated line. Magical...
The compu rhythm 78 is so easily recognisable
that 808. the bassline. the outer sax.. one of the funkiest jams by two white boys from the 80's! wow. i thought it was a roland 808... nope. the roland before that. good info..
Dear Directors of show, would love to see better shots of the host, William Kirk, playing. Want to see top down shots of his hands playing. Love the show.
i don’t know if you would’ve done this before? But how about Thomas Dolby’s famous song “She Blinded Me with Science”? That would be cool to do!
Love this!
Sounding good man. Some of that old Miami Sound Machine - Gloria Estefan stuff had some big ol beasts in it. Gimme gimme. Subbing :-))&%
That was really cool to see. I was hoping you’d tak a little about all the adjustments he makes in the music vice to the keyboard. But very cool. Thanks.
Awww man, you're a real treasure with your knowledge. No one can watch these videos of yours and not be blown away by your skill. It's a real joy for me listening to the layers. Thanks so much!
Love this! Keep it coming. Thanks Reverb
Oops, the Rhodes part at the 4:00 mark is a two part lick, and he only plays the first part! The last note of the second part is a whole step lower. I can't believe he missed it. Listen to Daryl's House with Cee Lo Green if you can't hear it on the original version.
Fantastic video, guys. Keep up with this series
Nothing sounds like a CR78. Instantly recognizable
I’m addicted to watching these. Please keep them going!
If your vintage drum machine speeds up or down slightly, clean the tempo knob.
I like what you do, However the Bass on the song was played on a real Bass by Tom T Bone Wolk, and the synth was something a little different, but the whole idea is there.
How about doing a video on the Thompson Twins, maybe Hold Me Now or Lay Your Hands on Me or any of them really?
Points for effort but almost everything this guy says is just slightly inaccurate (like his timing).
Can you try to do one on the opening synth parts for either "Mr. Crowley" or "Holy Diver"? Give us metalheads some luvin'?
sorry man, but the last note of every 2nd arpeggio rhodes riff goes to a lower note. So it does the first four downward notes, then the same first three again but the last one is lower. Do an A/B comparison
Rhodes-part is what stands out for me, instrumentally.
I like that sound.
Bass is wrong., it was a electric bass. Prob T bone Sounds are off. Sorry dude. Nice job. But not spot on
Please make Born Slippy NUXX by Underworld !
nice I want to hear some 80s funk like maybe Jungle Love or a Zapp song
I think Chromeo played this with Hall together a few years back
I LOVE THIS SERIES! Please do an episode on Talk Talk.
Yes!!! Talk talk and then Naked Eyes
Gonna go ahead and LIKE before we start 🙌 👏🏻 👍🏿
Diggin that members only jacket.
That Prophet 5 has some dying (dead!) capacitors
That bounce for the 40oz? Hilarious...
New Order-Blue Monday...c’mon brah!?
The bass line was done a Korg CX-3 organ.
Great video, very well done. The Safety Dance, please!
Had me at BASS IN YOUR FACE and roland old school
N.e.r.d need to an 80s sound album , shit be nice ..the Rhode sounds like the one on rick Ross oil money
Next please "The Human League - Don't You Want Me"
2 of my favourite songs ever so far from this series. Keep it coming!
This is of course the song Michael Jackson stole for Billie Jean.
