  • Hall & Oates' "I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)" figures heavily in our collective life soundtrack, and, unsurprisingly, it's equally consequential as a turning point for the insurgence of synthesizers in popular music. Here, William Kurk breaks down the sounds and techniques that make the #SynthSounds of this pop classic an ephemeral favorite.

    William Kirk is 100% legit. Please keep him as the host. I think you guys should get a little darker and show us synth sounds NIN closer.

      I absolutely agree and I hope that William comes back for another season of his tutorials! I did a little bit of resarch on Mr. Kurk (yes, it's indeed "Kurk"), aided by williamkurk.com/ He's released several solo albums in the last 15 years (all are available on streaming services, e.g. Spotify) and there's at least one podcast interview with William: It's at makingmoneyinthemusicbiz.com/podcast-52-interview-with-pianist-composer-singer-william-kurk/

    The drum pattern is ROCK AND ROLL 1 combined with another one of the presets which you can hear on the original. It was them recorded via a microphone in the room - coming out of the studio speakers.
    The bass part and the organ style pads are indeed a Korg CX3.
    The bells and strings are all Prophet5.
    There is no rhodes or any other keyboards on this track.
    The multitrack stems are pretty easy to hunt down - there is not much too this song at all, which makes it so amazing.

  • @clinke2007
    @clinke2007 6 лет назад +18

    Very nice. It's almost there. That Rhodes arpeggio is missing a note at the bottom of the run, though. I think it's a G in one bar, then F on the next.

    • @tomloncaric6189
      @tomloncaric6189 6 лет назад +2

      clinke2007, I think you're correct. The "Rhodes" arpeggio ends with "G" the first time, and "F" every other time. In fact, it's pretty easy to confirm this by watching the original Hall and Oates video. That part is played on a Prophet 5 in the video, and the alternating G and F are clearly seen.

    • @UnionThugg
      @UnionThugg 3 года назад

      Correct.

    Great video! Definitely want to hear more. It doesn't even need to be an entire song, maybe you could just pick a really iconic synth part, like a lead or a pad, and show how to regenerate it on real analog hardware from scratch? For example maybe the pad from Brian Eno's "An Ending" or the lead from "Frankenstein" by Edgar Winter Group?

    Like that settling pixie dust part with the Fender-Rhodes. The genius of Hall & Oates was that they used the cheesy Roland rhythm machine with irony not only on this tune but on "Kiss On My List" as well. Side note: Ron Sexsmith in "All In Good Time" uses a drum machine in the intro and first verse and then a full on drum set comes in along with bass guitar. At this point the song starts going deep. Lesson: Drum machine as compositional tool. ruclips.net/video/yCVAiaoqwgg/видео.html

    One of the first big synth songs was Don’t you Want Me by the Human League released in the US early 1982 but there were synth songs released before that like the Hall and Oates song here. Synths and saxes were a big thing in the 80’s. A lot of singers and bands then had sax players. Like Hall and Oates, there was a sax solo in I can’t go for that and Maneater. And Bruce Springsteen had the late Clarence Clemons as a sax player. I like music from the 50’s to the 80’s not so much the 90’s and 2000’s. 80’s music was like feel good music but 90’s and 2000’s music is depressing to me.
