Ep7: Synth Sounds of Talking Heads' "This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)" | Reverb

- Talking Heads classic "This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)" shows off synthesizers heavily, but it was recorded and performed completely using a single keyboard: the Prophet 5. William Kurk is here to run through the grooves in our studio (using the Prophet 6) to help you feel right at home when you experiment with the #SynthSounds of...Talking Heads.

My favorite Talking Heads song...The live version from Stop Making Sense is even more badass
Funny I was literally thinking exact the same 30 sec before I read this post.
Totally 👍 agree
Stop Making Sense is one of the greatest live albums ever recorded.
God I can never hear this without crying
I'm not the only one!!!!
Same
Same omg
Wow, me too
Agreed. This was our song; my soulmate and I. We had a wonderful experience together on this plane and Im sure I will be drawn to this song in the next life as well.
More demos by this dude. He rules.
Seriously. Give this guy a RUclips channel.
He really does a great job in all these videos!
Plus 1!!
Takeaway: I want to be best friends with this dude.
Love how accurate you got the synth sounds. I've seen covers that forget that little drag at the end of the note
Do “Love my way” by the psychdelic furs
This
Or Ghost in You
Wow, soon as you said a south African quality to the music, I finally understand after all the years. You are one amazing guy.
I will never grow even the slightest bit tired of this song.
This was incredibly well done!
not really
Everybody needs this lp.
awesome! i need a bracelet like that to prevent all my instruments from trying to grab my wrist and kidnap me.
I have limited interest in synths, basic, self-taught piano skills, and a left hand that contributes nothing to the whole affair, but I love this series. This guy's personality is infectious.
I’m crying before even watching this
Absolutely one of my most favorite songs! Good choice!
One of my favorite songs. So relaxing.
These synth clips are so rad. I could watch these to just about any song and enjoy them. Great series!
Love when knowledge is laid out so clearly by someone who knows what he's doing. Excellent.
I'm pretty new to synths and loving these.
"It just grooves" couldn't have said it better! This is done so well
The Members Only Jacket pulls it all together.
Best... Song... EVER! William is AWESOME!
This just became my favorite RUclips series. Another kick-ass explanation. Nailed it!
I can’t tell you how much I appreciate this video
this is one of my fav songs ever and I love this video!
Just binge watching these now! So good!
This guy is the best.
Superb. When I saw that Reverb had done this video I audible shouted "Yes!" Bravo!
God I love this song. It reminds me of the worst days and the best days of my childhood.
Hi William, thanks for doing this....I love this song and this was a bit of an education....very enjoyable.
Damn that sequential circuits synth!! What a incredible one.
Any person that can play this song solo is an absolute legend.
One of my favourites from talking heads 🎸
you guys should do "Electric Feel" by MGMT
Would be a cool segue considering they covered this song in their college days. Theres a video of Andrew playing the break line on Electric Feel where he’s like “YES I FINALLY GOT IT DOWN!” It’s so funny. Would definitely make an interesting video.
Sound8Vision I can imagine them covering The Talking Heads, MGMT was influenced by Brian Eno.
It’s pretty rough, but fun. They were just starting out.

@@Sound8VisionVibe love that vid!
@@Sound8VisionVibe weird. I came from that video. Tf. Hahaha.
I often wondered how that "Talking Heads Sound" was made on this number--now it's no mystery! Excellent break-down by William Kurk! Thx!
"My Man"!......in a Denzel voice.... This was awesome. You did an awesome job.
Talking Heads is my favorite band and this video did not disappoint!!
I never really noticed the pitch bends, but you’re right about how crucial it is. It’s used so much in this song, it makes me wonder if the keyboardist had just discovered pitch bending, and was using this song to play with the concept.
David byrne, the lead singer played keyboards on this so he probably didn't know as it was his first time playing keys on a talking heads track
William is awesome. Great artist and teacher. More William. Now I want a Prohet!
William is awesome. Thanks again young man.
This is brilliant. I only knew Talking Heads from Once in A Lifetime and Psycho Killer, but when I heard this song and other songs from this album, it just got me straight back into it, as well as watching Stop Making Sense Documentary, just making me want to listen to them! The Prophet is a key part in their music and sound!
I Love this song so much. Thank you for this.

Justin Van Meter had to scroll way to much to find this.
Thank you for the clarification. That slide sounds pretty Bernie-esque, but credit to whom it's due.
Please do a P-Funk song, Kurk!
@yourmanwatson I read an interview with Jerry Harrison where he said Wally Badarou played it.

Nailed it
timeless
I'd never thought about it back in the day but you're right about that bassline having that South African influence that Paul Simon later incorporated to great commercial success. Man, I need to watch Stop Making Sense to warm my heart during this social distancing pandemic situation and it will provide the special bonus of seeing the late great Mr. Bernie Worrell!
Nice one.
Love this channnnnelll!
