    Tbh I never really got how a dm could just change a backstory even against the wishes of the player

      Yeah, it seems all too common of an occurrence. I get trying to have a back and forth to make the character fit, but to take what was discussed before and just change it feels like you ripping their character to pieces in front of them.

      For real, it’s so weird. As a dm I’ll give my players guidelines for what works best in the setting and I’ll ask them to change parts but never change anything against their wishes. Even when I implement their backstories into the campaigns I ask them questions about how they imagine those aspect looking to get it as close to their vision as possible and it baffles me that some dms can just throw character backstories away?

      @@lootgoblinmarketplace I’m about to run a campaign and I’m doing a get to know each other game before we start. 5 players. Each pc are a bit dark, their current job is to settle a dispute between a holy and Druid cattle farmer. Their current plan is to kill the holy person and steal her wheat. What I’m going to do is give HL 2 guys to help her fight if needed maybe a 3rd if they start getting steam rolled.
      My goal is to have them fight the boss to end the quest rather then just killing the HL, I want them to learn to work together to actually be dark rather then 12 different plan trying to show how cool they are alone

      honestly if it happened to me, i would immediately stop showing up for the campaign. they obviously don't need/want me to play if they are just going to say no to my input into the collective story, especially if its something like a backstory where i have been playing this entire time with completely different information in my head about what had previously happened in the story.

    Stories like these make me realize just how lucky I am that my closest friends are into dnd and that I can trust them as players. The worst I’ve had since I started dming is a friend who would lie about his rolls (who then proceeded to ghost me every time I’d ask him if he would be at a session or if he still wanted to be involved for months despite telling me he was still interested in playing in the campaign) and I’m super super lucky about that

      I should’ve lied about my rolls. 🤣
      I’ve only partly played 1 campaign. I’m completely new and the DM was also a first time DM but apparently the dice set I have are balanced quite poorly; the absolute vast majority of my rolls were under 9! Trying to step over a small log? Haha, nope! A tumble I be goin! Help someone out of a pitfall? NOPE! Critical failure! I fall in too! Go to take a swing at a Smurf cat thing? Haha! Nope! Lost my weapon due to another critical failure for like the 7th time that session! …. Was. Not. Fun. Luckily(but unfortunately) the DM had to quit DMing for a while due to IRL issues that came up and didn’t have the time nor energy to continue DMing… so I was spared the ongoing pain and suffering that was in my fate with these cursed dice.
      Maybe I’ll roll the dice 3 times, every time, and just take the average of the 3 rolls if I ever try DND again. But then again, the average would likely never get above 12…

    OOF.
    As somebody who has been in OC communities outside of DnD, that is NOT ok. If you do this on Artfight, for example, you WILL get your account shut down. I have several OCs, including DnD characters, and I absolutely would hate to have anybody draw them with even somewhat scanty clothing. Not in a million years should you draw someone’s OC in a way they are not comfortable with. ESPECIALLY if it’s based on the actual player’s appearance or personality, because to that player, it then feels like THEY are the one being treated this way.
    Just be kind to people. Many people love their characters, so make sure to be respectful in how you draw them, and they’ll probably be ecstatic that you took the time to draw something like that!

    • @lootgoblinmarketplace
      @lootgoblinmarketplace  9 месяцев назад

      That’s a good insight. Ignoring D&D entirely, I don’t know if it is promoted really in any community to take an OC and draw them in a way the person that made it would disapprove of (especially if you know objectively that they disapprove since they asked you to stop).

    • @djsyntic
      @djsyntic 9 месяцев назад

      @Jaceareeno you seem confused about basic copyright law. You do not need to file paperwork to have a copyright on something. The moment you create something you have a copyright on it. What filing paperwork does is help you establish to others that it is indeed yours and when you first created it. But it is not required. We aren't talking about a company that stole some person's work and that person needs to prove to the court of law that they created it before the company supposedly did. We are talking about a group of friends. They all know who the creator of the OC is, so they know who has rights to it.
      To be clear here, the moment you create something is the moment you have a copyright on it, even if you never file paperwork to establish that fact. If you write a story about a character named Jaceareeno, I may not take your character and put it into my story without your permission. You would own the rights to that character and I would be infringing on your copyright even if you never published the story or filed for a copyright.

    As an artist I make it my policy to only draw someone else's OC if I get their permission to do so, regardless of content. Anything else feels like I could potentially be overstepping some boundaries.
    I would expect the same from someone else wanting to draw my OCs, though I probably always say yes. I see it as a minimum curtesy.

    • @lootgoblinmarketplace
      @lootgoblinmarketplace  9 месяцев назад +3

      I think that’s a good rule of thumb. Even if the person wanted to use the characters for their writings or drawings as a starting point there are still ways to make it less intrusive. There are plenty of instances of authors taking inspiration from a real life celebrity or someone they knew in their past, but they’ll make tweaks and also keep their inspiration anonymous often because at that point they have mixed together enough influences where it isn’t a straight recreation.

      The part of being unimaginative is something you can train, I recommend taking a known character (I recommend someone famous, think Harry Potter and the likes), and trying to break then down yourself, what happened to them? How did this affect them? What made them act the way they did? Then you can try and make a similar backstory, but where your character acted differently and for different reasons. This might not work for everyone but this did help me make some okay characters

      Another was a pirate who's crew revolted and before he drowned, a demon named Tharna saved him in exchange for his service, so pact of the Fathomless. Now he wants to take revenge on his first mate for the treason.
      And the last one I did a backstory session with is the Dragonborn Sorceress, where she discovered her powers, but lost her brother to cultists. (He's alive, but endured 12 years of torturous training) Her quest was to find out what his fate was, but she also discovered she was chosen by the Dragon god of Valor and Victory: Nyxator, to be his chosen one. So she has to undergo training before she can use her powers.

I was lucky the player liked them and i had other ideas down the pipe to have a mastermind behind this sort of inciting incident added to the backstory. Thing is when i realized me and the codm had rewritten way more than we thought and there was something contradictimg some of those events already (hitherto unmentioned in character) I ran the basic premise of the changes(Cause they foreshadowed stuff for later in the narrative about said masterminds motives) past him and he greenlit it. While jt maybe just be a “fake character”, to players who really get into their characters (which they crafted) they feel a personal attachment to it.
      I guess it would depend on how much you know the person. A long time best friend? Yeah whatever. That’s hilarious.
      Someone you hardly know outside of the game sessions? Who also hogs all the attention for his character/himself? Yeah that’s weird to me.

      Being uncomfortable with unsolicited nsfw of your ocs is actually not all that uncommon, and not just in dnd circles. It's considered basic decency to ask permission beforehand, which the player in question did not do. The fact that the cleric's character was modeled after her own appearance makes it worse.

      One thing that is important to point out is the Cleric’s character is their likeness. I don’t actually know if that is the case for all the players, but for one person they are drawing their self character being intimate with someone else at the table which makes it a step more personal.

      It's about consent, and consent is important in fiction and roleplay as well. Characters are a very personal thing - we put a lot of us in them, we accompany them through their life, and we feel their emotions, their struggles, and everything.
      If you (the generic you, not You you) asked another player if you can draw some nsfw of their character and they say yes, then all is good. Me and my friends do that all the time.
      And if they say no, then great! Now you know not to do that. The reason doesn't matter. Maybe they don't want nsfw of their character. Maybe they don't like imagining their character in nsfw situations. Maybe they don't trust you to represent their character as they would like. Maybe they just don't want you to put your nsfw fantasies on their character.
      But if you do that without asking, without permission, it's an overstepping of boundaries. It's a break of trust. Maybe they would have been okay with it if you asked, but now they're just put off by it and by you.

    Wait are they really getting this butthurt over their characters getting lewded? Oh give it a rest. I swear half these horror stories are just puritanical freakouts. They are characters. Not real people. Although I will say-how tf is the party learning about this. Sharing this content is weird.

      It’s a huge violation of your fellow player’s boundaries and trust to do stuff like that without explicit permission. If it happened to you I’m sure you’d feel differently.

      From my understanding the party learned about it because the player was commissioning art as well and sharing it around.

      Oh, that was going to be my one question.
      Like, if they flipped through a player’s sketchbook without permission…that would honestly be on them, and that’s an extremely rude thing to do anyway.
      But if that player was OPENLY SHARING that stuff TO THE WORLD, absolutely effing not. Go directly to creep jail, do not pass go, do not collect 200 gold pieces

      If you have a problem with me criticizing someone who continued to draw & commission rule 34 of their friends and send it to them after they begged them to stop. I’m very comfortable telling them they shouldn’t be doing that.

      @@darkcrydotmrihavetoomanyst1440 that is an absurd attitude. The sheer entitlement of thinking you can tell others what they can, and can not draw.
