I cannot believe that Nick didn't clock the Basic Instinct nod during the Mr. Mime interrogation scene or that the R gas in the parade balloons is basically a direct lift from Batman '89! It wasn't as deft as Pixar, obviously, but there were some pretty neat touches for older audiences (Det. Pikachu saying Serenity Now! to Psyduck had me laughing) that kept me engaged beyond just the spectacle of seeing Pokemon on screen in a way I'd only imagined prior. Really hope they keep the team together for another!
There was a Pokemon movie in theatres last year too. So at least 8 Pokemon films have screened in North American theatres. The first 5 animated films, the recent "I Choose You!" and "Power of Us" films, and Detective Pikachu. "Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution" will probably screen in North America later this year too.
Just got home from seeing the movie and I really enjoyed it for the most part. Pretty funny throughout and I liked the direction they went for. I wish the budget had been a bit higher however since the CGI was pretty weak and I was pretty disappointed with Rhyme city. The first shots introducing us to Rhyme city are really cool but then it all suddenly turns into just shots of London streets but with CGI neon signs super imposed over it. There's even London black cabs, street signs, buses and the famous Gherkin building in half the shots of the city, which really pulled me out of it. I was also pretty disappointed that they repeated a lot of the same Pokemon throughout the movie, it felt like about 35% of all the Pokemon we see are either a Squirtle, Charmander, Machamp or Sneasel, but again I guess this was down to the budget or something, hopefully if they get a sequel they'll also get a bigger budget. Also Gengar is my favourite Pokemon and they turned him into a Goofy bastard.
The DJ Is Omar Chaparro, and is from my hometown, Chihuahua in México. Yeah...he wasnt great haha but I was hyped to see him go from local radio host to be in a Pokémon movie... with a Charizard :D
Pokémon 4ever also had a theatrical release it just wasn't distributed by WB (saw it in theaters when I was a kid). Pokémon Heroes (5) may have been the first one that was Direct-to-DVD in the U.S...? 🤷🏼♂️
For as much fun as Detective Pikachu was, I feel sorry for any non-fan of Pokemon that got dragged along. All the terminology and Pokemon abilities are not explained at all.
As someone who went with people who know nothing about Pokémon, they didn’t care about abilities or Pokémon moves or anything. They were just there for the cute characters and mew two
I'm not even a fan of Pokemon, but this film was great. The only let downside was the villain and end act plot, but the visuals and world building was phenomenal. I hope we get a digimon film. I also thought the Assassin's Creed movie was alright minus the mechanical arm Animus and lack of historical time scenes.
**Morelull, a Gen VII Alolan Pokémon floats by** Andy: What are all the floating things? Tim: I don’t know, that’s a Gen V or something that I’m not too familiar with. #FakeFan #Genwunner #JK #LoveYouTim
Let me know if I should watch this. The GoT in reviews bring a cloud of negativity i can't shake, and I agree with their points lol. it could be said better.
The only part of the movie I though the CGI looked bad was the part they were jumping across the tree’s. Other than that I though the movie was really good but not great. The world they built was fantastic but I didn’t enjoy the story so much and though the chemistry between actors was lacking. Ryan Reynolds was great though as always
The trainer in the promotional video was Red from Pokemon Red. I'm surprised you guys didn't catch onto it. It couldn't be Ash because he would be much older since we know the Mew-Two here is the one from the first movie. As for Lucy, At first, it threw me off but honestly, I enjoyed her anime-style introduction. She was hella anime. Loved it! Tim hadn't seen or spoken to his dad in over ten years after he moved to Rhyme City following the death of Tim's mom. The thing is that when he left Tim still loved Pokemon so he modeled his room after the one in his house and filled it with things he thought he would love not realizing that Tim would come to resent both him and Pokemon after his decision to bury himself in his work. Also, Harry got direct orders from the Mayor when he was given that job to get Mew-Two and then when Harry understood what was going on he helped break Mew-Two out. So the police force follows regular protocol but in the end, they work for the Mayor.
The Mewtwo here IS NOT THE SAME ONE AS THE FIRST MOVIE. It is the Mewtwo from the GAMES. It would make zero sense if this was the Mewtwo from the first movie. At the end of that film, Mewtwo understands and likes humans due to Ash's sacrifice. In this movie, Mewtwo hates humans until he encounters Harry and Detective Pikachu, where he then understands that humans aren't all bad. It's actually baffling that people are thinking this is the same Mewtwo from the first movie because it couldn't be more incorrect.
Enjoyed everything except for the main plot, which is a bummer. Just didnt vibe with me and when the plot kicks in into the middle of the film i kinda was out but then the last act got me back in. Def wanna see more of this world just with a better plot. Id go like a 7ish out of 10
Not trying to be a party pooper, Tim, but it’s doing very so-so at the box office. Worldwide opening weekends aren’t important usually because staggered release dates being so common. Doing $54m opening domestic isn’t great. It’ll end up breaking even and doing $450-500m which is ok but not great for a movie that cost $150m. Especially from WB who needs some big hits as of late. We’ll see how Godzilla does...
Adjusted for inflation, Mewtwo Strikes Back in 1999 made $131.5m in the US, and I'm honestly thinking Detective Pikachu might struggle to eclipse that based on the other films releasing around it. The worldwide box office is stronger, but in the past 20 years, the worldwide audience has changed considerably, so it's not a very fair comparison.
That's the dream right there.... I might be something like 50 years old when and if that ever happens, but boy I really hope that it'll be worth the wait lol
Geez so much hate on Tim's haircut, it's only hair....it grows back so just do you Tim! Fuck the people that just get the same shit time and time again
In January 2019, months ahead of the release of Detective Pikachu, Legendary Entertainment announced that a sequel is already in development. Oren Uziel signed on as screenwriter
Saying that pokemon 2000 is not an actual good movie is just untrue. Most pokemon movies are bad but the second and keldeo one are actual GOOD movies. and the hoopa one is insane if you are a pokemon fan but pokemon 2000 is MUCH BETTER than detective pikachu as a movie.
Nahhhh The Power of One is the weakest of the first three films. Spell of the Unown is far superior and probably gives Detective Pikachu a run for its money. I'd also say Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, and The Rise of Darkrai are better. I haven't seen The Power of Us, but I've also heard some very positive things about it.
@@CartoonReview Having recently rewatched all the movies as an adult, I disagree with you. pokemon 2000 is the best pokemon movie imo. It tackles themes like climate change and the impact of humans on nature WAY before it's time and the music is insane both in the original version as well as the western one. 3rd movie is a more human story with a great "villain" but there are too many shortcoming in actual cinematography imo. and common the rise of darkrai overuses cgi scenery way to much just to show off they can do it. Power of us is ok, zeraora is a weird character in it
As a MAJOR Gengar fan, I was not upset at how he looked because he always changes his form in the Anime and he was doing that here. He has always had huge teeth you should see his moves in Pokken. If we saw him walking I think you would see how he normally looks. The purple gass never affects Pikachu because of the end reveal, its why towards the end when all the people become Pokemon they are not affected too.
Hey the adds/ commercial ad reads, we all skip it, so how do you guys get money for it? If you get money for it great but you guys don't even sit through it... Oh Tim you're hair cut isn't quite as cool as Hawkeyes but it's cool man.
I love Tim’s hat.
Okay this one made me LOL
🤣
Yeah I said Tim's working out that Kim Jung un hair cut and it had no likes and then I saw this one and busted out laughing so I deleted mine lol
I love that Tim switched seats with Andy to hide his horrible haircut.
And his fuppa.
Tim’s 1/2 way to the Hawkeye haircut from Endgame
You can’t pull off Hawkeye’s haircut with that much man boob.
Tim my bro.. Short up the top go jar head jake gynhall for a month or so... Its you're only hope
I was looking forward to Greg’s opinion since he said he loved it, I was hoping to hear more about why he liked it so much.
Probably Greg will had more things to say than Nick ... who is there almost wanted to be somewhere else
Do a full fledged Pixar In Review...what are you afraid of?
Literally only come to the comments for the discourse on Tim’s hair lol
A La Croix shirt and an awful haircut, Tim is so lucky Greg wasn’t on this show
ill literally pay for them to do pokemon movie in review
Jesus, that intro. I replayed it like 10 times. Whoever did it did an excellent job. Really digging the videos lately, keep it guys and Joey.
Didn’t watch the movie but that intros the best thing in the world
Watch the Movie, it is great and needs support.
Seriously. Who made it and how do I get it as my ringtone?
Jared Hayes it was part of the Photoshop challenge on KF/AF a few weeks back , I don’t remember who made it
Poor Nick... I feel like they should have let him leave, his so confused the entire time😂
Nick's expressions during this review mirrors my grandma's face when I made her watch Pokemon with me back in the 90s.
I disagree on the Gengar thing. Based on source material thats about what it should look like, it always had big teeth

I don’t think they’re counting Fathom/limited releases.
Are we not going to talk about how Lucy straight up told Tim to come by her place later in the night?
Tim, you have something on your head.
Tim feels like the little brother that when he really likes somthing, it makes me want to hate it
Nick not knowing the old town road reference until recently cracks me up when andy says the phrase aha
Lmao, I was in the movies with the drum corps Nick was talking about. Used to be a member of the Blue Devils in Concord. 😂
I'm pretty certain that the fourth Pokémon movie came out in theaters as well. The one with Celebi and Suicune.
The 5th also was released in theatres. The previous two films have been released as Fathom Events as well.
Just got home from seeing the movie and I really enjoyed it for the most part. Pretty funny throughout and I liked the direction they went for. Those were Bouffalant, not Tauros at the start of the movie Tim :)
Sequel: Ryan (Red) Reynolds leads Tim to the top of Mt. Silver...where he once reigned supreme. Whole movie is Tim acquiring a team of 6.
Nintendo should make a Detective Pikachu costume for Smash Bros
The DJ Is Omar Chaparro, and is from my hometown, Chihuahua in México. Yeah...he wasnt great haha but I was hyped to see him go from local radio host to be in a Pokémon movie... with a Charizard :D
Ooooh I adore the intro. Just like I adore (most of) this movie. I really dig Justice Smith and Tim as a protagonist in particular.
43:53 Nick's joke lmaoooooo
Does anyone have a link to the modified pokemon beat used in the intro? That shit is so dank.
I found out that it was Pocket Monsters by Psychic Type. Go check out his stuff!
Anyone catch when mr.mime did the sharon stone leg lift from basic instinct?
Pokémon 4ever also had a theatrical release it just wasn't distributed by WB (saw it in theaters when I was a kid). Pokémon Heroes (5) may have been the first one that was Direct-to-DVD in the U.S...? 🤷🏼♂️
Nope. Pokemon Heroes was also released in theatres, however, it was only shown on roughly 200 screens.

Oh my god, I loved the opening. It took me back so many years.
Tim mentioned the theme from Pokemon the First Movie by M2M and I had to go back and listen to it.....boy that shit slap!!!!
Love the intro. Brings me back...
what song is in the beginning? link?

Tim is definitely a fake as fuck Pokemon fan. He likes the first two generations and that's it.
Loving the intro edit!!
Tim respect for getting a bad haircut and not even trying to hide it with a hat. Own it my dude.
His wife should have play nurse joy or officer Jenny
1:13:14 Every time Andy quietly went "Pika" I laughed hysterically. So good.
Let me know if I should watch this. The GoT in reviews bring a cloud of negativity i can't shake, and I agree with their points lol. it could be said better.
They're pretty positive on this compared to GoT in review
Best Intro Evah!
Greg sucks ;)
Pokémon wasn’t in my Dolby till week 2.
That damn intro was amazing

God people kept shitting on the movie for Ryan not bringing Deadpool dialogue. It’s a fucking kids movie.
Jesus Tim what happened to your hair?
I do wish the pokeball would’ve grown in size like in the show
Pokemon Johto's theme song is amazing
Looks like Tim is wearing a toupee.
Is cooking with greggy going to be posted soon?
Tim I love you. But your haircut reminds me of Recoome from DBZ.

Started watching you guys again after having stopped over 2 years ago, I am absolutely loving the content. Keep it up guys !
Yall really didnt understand the mime joke. They dont know what he is because mimes mime shit and can be anything or nothing
I don’t understand the format here, when do they review the movie? So far it’s just a super long summary.
auberginedreams00
Yea this might be the worse one, more like a reference discussion than a movie discussion.
Just relistened to this and only came to see who was saying “pika”
Tim and andy swapping seats is throwing me off. I love pokemon but nervous to see this incase it isnt good 🤔
That Nicktoons shirt is cool af

This movie needed john leguizamo
Nintendo should just make movies like these for their other series like Mario and Zelda, and build up over 20 movies for a Super Smash Bros. film.
That's the dream right there.... I might be something like 50 years old when and if that ever happens, but boy I really hope that it'll be worth the wait lol

I wanted to give the video a like, but it was at 69 likes, and I didn’t want to ruin such a Nice thing :)
The gas doesnt affect pikachu because it isnt a pokemons mind it would be affecting
