  • Leeches, bloodletting, and radioactive cures. Why did people use such bizarre medical treatments? Medicine is much more advanced now... right?
    Lydia Kang is an internal medicine physician at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. She graduated from Columbia University and New York University School of Medicine. Kang is also the author of historical, young adult and non-fiction books. Those books include: “Quackery: A Brief History of the Worst Ways to Cure Everything” (co-authored with Nate Pedersen) as well as “A Beautiful Poison” and “The November Girl.”
    This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.     I really enjoyed talk. I enjoyed your descriptions of the bizarre medical treatments and the humor. Hope is such an important thing that people need to hold on to after they have been given a diagnosis that isn't what they were expecting. I honestly believe hope does help people stay strong.

      So you think sugar is safe? Creating inflammation is safe?

    My dad neighbor got diagnosed with a very aggressive colon cancer the doctors said and he needed to do chemo immediately so after the first round of chemo he was vomiting felt awful and said forget it im done with chemo what ever happens happens too me,,,, that was 25 years ago and he still up and about today doing his thing,,, side note as long as the doctors prescribe Oxycontin’s for people with pain were they get addicted and many over dose and die ,, THERE WILL ALWAYS BE QUACKERY

    Tapeworms and especially Leeches are still used successfully today so what's your point?

      @@tantiwahopak101 Don't know about ta;eworms but I think leeches are still used in some plastic and micro surgery as they secrete anticoagulants.
