I was born and raised in Reno. My father made the director's chairs for Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable, in his upholstery shop!My mother went to Reno High, where she and Dawn Wells were close friends.
Cool!!!
My mom worked at Harold's club for 35 years. She always talked about Redfields house She said he always walked downtown and dressed in old clothing.. Excellent video, thank you!!
Thanks! Your mom might have been to the parties at the Patrick house!
Wow, I live next door to Harold Smith's house on Urban Rd. Never knew that. Thank you!
"I'm with you!" - Harold S. Smith, Sr.
Wow! That's all the bands I have been listening to as a child... I didn't know all those bands did recordings there!
No internet to tell us what our favorite bands are up to like today.
Dr Dre’s 2001 was also recorded there
Thank you so much for all this awesome history... If I become rich my goal is to drive around in an old beat up truck and have silver dollars in trash bags... Life goals... Oh, and to tell someone to pound sand for asking about any history... ahahaha! Thanks for doing the hard work and sometimes awkward work for us!!!
My pleasure!
Awesome that you mentioned Gray-Reids. I remember it well. It was basically next to the Mayfair market and the Pizza Oven. Anybody remember the 76 station right across from Mayfair? When Circus Circus was built, they retained bits of the Gray-Reids foundation. The escalator that is in the middle of the casino is original to the now defunct department store (I know because as a kid I used to play on it (don't tell mom :)). Thanks for a great job at chronicling Reno's history.
I didn't know that about the escalator - I think I know the one you're talking about - cool!!!!
Back in the day when we would cruise main
10:09 my mom, Carla, worked at that house when it was Watson, Rounds and two other names I cannot remember. They sold it and moved to another historic house in S Reno. It was Harrah’s mom’s house (I believe), near the property of the large home down there. Construction has built up around the old house. My mom had a nice view of the horses down there. I had no clue the first house she worked in for Watson Rounds was also historically remarkable. She would have found that interesting. She loved her job there and the lawyer, Matt, she worked for. Thanks for making this.
Cool - thanks!
Great video! Respectfully, you forgot: the Mill Street fourplex where Tom Hanks lived as a child; the house at the northwest corner of California and Robin, where Rat Packers Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr. partied in the back yard with former DA Bill Raggio; the home on Mark Twain where heavyweight boxing champ G
Gene Tunny lived; the southwest Reno home where Reno Mayor Len Harris was in a fatal shootout; the southwest Reno home where Audrey Hepburn lived in the late 1960s while awaiting a divorce; the southwest Reno home where famous celebrities like Jim Nabors, Wayne Newton, Bill Cosby, Sammy Davis Jr., Bobby Gentry, and many others stayed during their performance engagements at Harrah’s; … ;)
Heck yeah! Those are worthy! I only did those I had the dirt on - maybe another episode! Cheers!
Love the hat Steve!! Your time to put this together and sharing is very much appreciated. I truly enjoy learning more about my home in Nevada! Please continue your ventures! Cheers my friend.
Thanks Tobysan! The hat is a modified prop police hat!
You're a good tour guide. I enjoyed this.
Thanks for hanging out!
This was educational and informative. For 30 years, I've seen many of these landmarks and witnessed history as I followed the Lake street house going down Virginia and the sad implosion of the Mapes. I've even seen the end result of jumpers from buildings I won't name.👍and sub'd for more.
Thanks for the sub! Cheers!
I always wondered about that house! The house that was owned by the mapes, I went to mount rose for elementary as well as Jessie beck, my middle school was swope! I always knew I was surrounded by history!!
P.s I would love a video about infamous locations in the city!
your a natural for this..
You're saying I look good in goofy hats! Thanx!! ;-)
Thanks for the new show. Mother contact always have enjoyed Reno since I was a little kid visiting grandparents and exploring in the late 60s and through the 70s
Cheers!
Very interesting. I’ve heard of granny’s house a few times as a kid from my uncle who was a musician in Reno. I remember him mentioning some famous rock bands recording there in the 80’s.
Thanks - I thought Jimmy Page did some work there too but I wasn't sure enough to include his name.
Very Cool!
This was great!! More! However it did send me down a 3 hour rabbit hole on levere redfield. Absolutely fascinating. Would love to see a part two. (Hint...1550 nixon ave. could be a start.) Anyway thank you
Maybe my favorite video that you've done to date. Well done. This long time Chicagoan recognized quite a few of these homes including one for which I was the paper boy for a couple of years in the late 70's. Keep these coming!
Thanks Chris - appreciate your support!
So, so interesting. You seem to really do your homework and it shows. Can’t wait for the next installment.
Thanx Dennis - Cheers!
Really enjoy your videos - thank you! By chance, do you happen to know Neil Cobb and/or Jerry Fenwick - the authors of the book “Reno Now and Then”?
Neal is a friend of mine - search for The Skeleton Lady of Reno on my channel and you'll see an episode I did with him. Thanx!
I love the stash-in-the-trash angle that LaVere Redfield used. Feeling inspired, I will start putting my holdings in dog poop bags...
P.S. The Baby Face Nelson bit "It's Possible" was killer funny!!!
Its an effective solution!
WHAA THAT HOUSE ON MT ROSE! My cousin lives across the street. That is so cool.
Love these Reno videos!
Thanks!
@@SteveTRYK I saw your history of rock ‘n’ roll clubs here in town. A local musician also and I think we have a pretty great local music scene. Maybe a video of current live music venues would be fun. Or maybe follow some of the bands. I play with the Bourgeois Gypsies, and with Carson Chandler, if you’re looking for any stories!
The Misfits is one ☝️ of my favourite movies 🎥
I love the scene of Marilyn running up the steps of our courthouse!
That was GREAT!!!! Thank you.🇺🇲👍
This was a fun one to do! Cheers!
Good job, friend. Always like to hear more about Reno history.
I like doing it! Cheers!
This was pretty cool
Very interesting! I know most of these homes from living here so long, but very little of the history. Thank you… Also, Schussboom is my favorite new brewery in the area. Amazing beer, and equally amazing food.
Thanks!! Schussboom is on the opposite side of town for me or I'd go more. Cheers!
Enjoyed the video - really wish you would do a video on Atlantis and how it started as a small motel. Just an idea....
Always a possibility - thanks!
I remember a small casino/restaurant (with rooms too?) called "The Golden Road" near the Centennial Colosseum which is now (I believe) the Atlantis. I also sorely miss the "Liberty Bell" Restaurant (best Prime Rib in this area. Period! :).
Dr. Dre’s Chronic 2001 was mastered at that house in ‘98
I know there was a hotel in Wadsworth that Marilyn Manroe stayed at. And its now a pizza place with some cool stuff in it.
I'd love to know more intel on that!!
As a teenager I broke down in front of Charlie Mapes house. He came out to see what the hell I as doing there and ended up calling help to assist me. I thought I was in big trouble but he turned out to be a kind man in that situation.
How cool is that!!
Is this why the Hell's Angels still kind of own the brothel or that land area? I remember my husband had to ask permission from the club owner to fish over there. He was really cool and let my husband and his friend fish. But now a lot of this stuff makes sense...
Dunno the details on that!
Good old Joe Conforti 😂😂
Jack Dempsey owned or partially owned a hotel In Tonopah NV and I suspect, (though I cannot confirm this,) may have done some work moonlighting as a miner in some of the silver mines near Tonopah.
I can neither confirm nor deny but possible! Cheers!
@@SteveTRYK “Said bill clinton”
👍🏻
Nothing you said about how red and white became in possesion of joes house is accurate.
Please fill us in - love to know!
@@SteveTRYKI'm not telling the innerweb the story you are
@SteveTRYK there's also a movie joe did called mustang ranch. Pretty neat movie.
There is a House up by the college that my MIL used to rent the bottom . It has a hidden room and s.its for shooting out of . A Gangster owned it , don't think you covered .
Sounds interesting!
I remeber when the mapes was vacant and homeless drug addicts lived there it was a scary place
It's too bad it couldn't be saved, but I get it.
💪🤘🖤⛓️🚂🤘🎸🗿
Absolutely wonderful as always! Thank you!!
Thank you too!
Wells avenue was named after Dawn Wells family. My mom had a class with her at University of Nevada. Also Mills lane was there too at the tim
I think the street name predates that family but I could be wrong. Thanks!
@@SteveTRYK also I guess it was a Reno high school that my mother had class with her. And yes Wells avenue is from Sheldon Wells who had a sheep ranch it says years ago no relation to Dawn’s family. My grandmother worked at park lane mall in Weinstocks lingerie department. Grandfather owned an Auto body shop called Ideal body shop. The building is still there . Near 2nd and Keitzke lane
@@SteveTRYK my dad was Dawn’s uncle.. Wells Avenue was not named for any of our family.
I saw that Dawn Wells was buried in/near Reno with her mother. Dawn and her mother had the same birthday.
My grandma knew Joe Conforte I had no idea the hells angels place was Joe’s
