Thanks! I hope it makes a comeback. My wife and I spent many getaways there between the mid 90s until its latest closure. It was a great place to visit.
My Dad worked here in the late 70s and 80s. Gene Wilder and Neil Young used to frequent the Cal Neva as well. I really hope that Larry Ellison does something amazing with this place and restores it without destroying the history of the Cal Neva.
The Cal-Neva property is at the north shore of Lake Tahoe, not "in Lake Tahoe" where your beginning map depicts South Lake Tahoe. It was just down the street from the Bal Tabarin which was last operated in the summer of 1960. I ran the slots. Indeed, those were the Golden Years!
Interesting video. I first heard of Cal-Neva in the HBO movie, The Rat Pack, with Ray Liotta as Frank Sinatra and Joe Mantegna as Dean Martin. Dino visits Frank to inform him that his pal, President John F. Kennedy, had just appointed brother Bobby to be the new Attorney General. Martin: "It's good to know that a choir boy with a passion for sin will be looking out for us.." Moments later, Dino tells Frank: "I want to sell you my share of Cal-Neva." The thing was, mob boss Sam "Momo" Giancana, also had an interest in the resort. In anticipation of Bobby prosecuting organized crime figures, Dino wanted to distance himself from the Rat Pack's mob contacts. Scene ends with Frank's secretary poking her head in: "The President is on line two."
@@LegendaryForces unfortunately of years of neglect, before it closed it was in rough shape. Since the tower sits on a mountain side the building started sag on one end from the fault shifting over the past 60 years. So some of the rooms had cracks they tried to cover up with wall paper that led directly outside. Back in the day AC was none existent in Tahoe because temperatures never exceeded 80 degrees at the peak of summer so there was no AC. The Frank Senatra’s ballroom was in very rough shape from years and years of smoke build up residue. I wish they would of just restored the building instead of going into financial hardship trying to make it a schwanky high end resort that’ll probably never open now. The owner is a bigot for that. The pool that went from California to Nevada that had picks of marylin swimming in it was filled in as well. Nevada is no stranger for California corporations to come in and demolish the history of Nevada for profits.
Oscar, thanks so much for this video. I read an article about divers taking a lot of junk out of the lake, and the article mentioned the Cal-Neva and Sinatra. I have no complaints about the way you situated the lodge at the lake - north or south. It's a very minor point, but the good thing about it is there wouldn't be nearly as many comments here without it. Put some sort of error in your next video!!
Sadly, the "remodelers" have destroyed the swimming pool spanning the state line that Marilyn Monroe swam in. They also tore down the cabins with the secret tunnels used by Marilyn and Sinatra to move from the casino to the cabins in the name of safety. The secret tunnel was through the floor of the closet in Marilyn's cabin. They wrecked it. As a kid, I visited in 1962 and again in about 2010. It was mostly intact then and absolutely fascinating. I guess they are going to turn it into another chichi Hollywood hotel without any history.
I went there two days after Christmas in 1977. It was about 20 degrees F, and there were no other tourists. At that time, there were no plexiglass windows and I was able, with encouragement from the two ladies in charge, climbed up the steps to the Coppola.
Bad Times @ the El Royale starring Jeff Bridges is a great movie that uses the Cal-Neva as the focal point of the movie though no one but history buffs like ourselves would know that and think the movie is strictly based on a writers fantasy when in fact he/she must have had some connection or knowledge of the real Cal-Neva. Loved the movie because of the Cal-Neva mystic and the acting by all was above par.
Another excellent video. Thanks for putting these together. Just one observation about this one... the map you pan over in the beginning implies that the Cal-Neva was in SOUTH Lake Tahoe, when in fact it's in North Lake Tahoe.
Thanks for the video. It would be interesting a video about MArilyn Monroe's last weekend at Cal Neva. Joe di Maggio tried to stay in but he was not allowed and then MM passed away and Frank Sinatra was not allowed in tbe funeral service. Real life. Rest in Peace Marilyn Monroe. 🌷🌹🌺💜
Can someone please tell me why at 0:12 it shows the Cal-Neva Lodge to be located in the south part of Lake Tahoe? Then at 7:23 a large yellow chip shows it to be (at the correct location) in the north part of Lake Tahoe.
there is a town called "Stateline" that is shown on that map - but the narrator uses the word more loosely - and you can see the video scrolling up towards the calneva on the northern shore state line
..yes,.. this is true1960ish we took a tour of the place and they let us go thru the tunnel... it was made so "guests"...could come and go without being seen... dont know if its still open... if that tunnel could talk..!!! LOL.. obviously there was really no need for it other than that being the casino/hotel was so close together...

I use to go here in the seventies all the time. It was an amazing place. Just turning 21 and the friends I was running with made this place.

They already did by destroying the cool pool, all the remaining cabins, the Indian Room and the Circle Bar.
I used to perform there with a few bands back in the 80’s and 90’s. Great memories
Amazing! Thanks for sharing.

I’m so glad I was able to tour the underground tunnels before it closed and they were filled in forever. I use to do security at the Cal-Neva.
Wow, that's awesome! I would have loved to see the tunnels and the place itself.

Thanks for this video. I really enjoyed it and those photos are amazing! Most I’ve never seen before. Thanks ❤

Julie here from California I LOVED YOUR SHOW! THANK YOU
Interesting video. Thanks for producing it.
Thank you for watching!
My first visit was in July, 1964 ----, great memories with family and friends throughout many visits...2016.
Wow! It must have been amazing back then!

that would a a complete shame! the historyIS what makes it such an attraction! few places can claim that sort of history
I visited and stayed there in 2002 and 2007. The "destruction" you mentioned" is a tragedy for the Cal_Neva. It will never be the same...
I think those tunnels were used for more than safety reasons if you get my drift.
@@RJMEL24 During prohibition they were used to smuggle liquor into the resort.
Noooooooo

I was just watching that movie and Cal-Neva was exactly what I thought of. Good movie.
Remember….below par is better than above par.

Ahh okay thank you for letting me know that! Thanks for watching as well and glad you enjoyed it.
I visited Cal-Neva in 2014. You could go inside and tour a lot of it back then.
I wish I would’ve been able to visit it!
I was watching "bad times at the el royale" and I remembered the stories about the Cal-Neva.
Great Video bro nice made me a subscriber
lots of memories there
We were their in 2011. Stayed in cabin #5(Frank's) Place was run down but still memorable though
Oh nice! Awesome to hear!
I thought Cal Neva was at north lake (crystal bay). That’s where I remember seeing it, perhaps they moved locations.
good vid. Bro ! work on your delivery, but good facts !!
🌷I would have loved to go to CalNeva and stay in Marilyns cabin....Tku for this...

Thanks for watching!
You could possibly have shown the cottage (No 3) where Marilyn stayed.
My Dad has many stories of North Shore Club - He would be 96 😘
I was the slot mechanic in the early 1960s.
I’m sure that was a unique job. Did they have Jennings or Mills machines? Hopefully I got the manufacturers correct.
@@LegendaryForces Jennings! Dick Killian

The MGM Grand that was being built in the mid 70's was in Reno not Las Vegas.
Thanks for letting me know.
MGM was in Vegas and Reno

Many ghosts in the bungalows. We had to switch rooms. Seems it was a common request.
It was north Tahoe not state line south Tahoe!
Gotcha
It’s not at South Shore, it’s at North Shore. Need to fix your map.
Unfortunately I can't change that map and it was a general map I found.
Yeah! That continues to suck!
I lost some and won some there before it closed in 2013 , still closed as of 2023 oh now it's 2024 , lol .
Not in the best area. Let the dump go.
