    Students!
    It is possible to go straight into hearts out of school. You just have to find the right facility.
    Ortho is the money maker of majority of the hospitals. So learning how to do a few ortho cases is key.
    Ophthalmology is great to have on your resume as well. A lot of hospitals have a specialty eye team just like hearts, and they pay more.
    If you do robot cases. Make sure to do a wide variety. Not just general, not just gyne. But be able to go into urology, thoracic and ENT for robots. Robots doesn’t just mean the Si, Xi, and SP. but neuro spine has robots and so does ortho for joints.
    Vascular surgery, specifically endovascular surgery is great to know too. Some hospitals have their own vascular team aside from hearts and knowing that specialty is amazing for your skills in case you get into crazy predicaments but it also looks great for recruiters.
    Not all hospitals make you choose specialties so that is something I would suggest you don’t take in unless it’s a place that does teams. Aside from that, try to learn EVERY specialty.

    • @SURGICALTECHGEEK
      @SURGICALTECHGEEK  3 года назад +17

      Realistically, very low % of hospital hires without experience and go straight to hearts. Not gonna say never but very little %.
      And hospitals aren't the ones that chooses your cases during clinicals. It's the preceptor. Everything else that isn't a speciality can be learned on the job while the rest are hard to get into if they have teams as you mentioned.
      Anyone can be taught a lap chole in a week but total joints take awhile.
      Good points though! I'm with the vascular team and i love doing endo aaa!

    Work at a surgicenter if you don’t want call. Also, typically, if you’re on call and get called in, just show up and clock in. Knee high shoe covers also exist for a reason.

      Surgery centers don't guarantee hours. They send you home if all cases are done. No opportunity to make more money since their schedule is fixed. No weekends No holidays. Varies by facilities. This is typically where techs wanna retire to.

    • @Dailyshart
      @Dailyshart 2 года назад

      @@SURGICALTECHGEEK right, it varies by facility, meaning there are plenty that do guarantee hours. That’s why you read your contract.
      Edit: it’s not hard to be per diem at another place and pick up extra hours. You said that you didn’t like taking call, and I was just demonstrating that one can arrange it to where they don’t have to take call.
      Edit edit: you’re definitely right that people who work at surgicenters generally want to retire, lol. Skills get a tad bit weak working at one..

    Thank you for the in depth video explaining the harsh realities of both pros and cons. Tho it doesn’t seem to take long to become a CST, the wages, and physical demand of being on call and constantly lifting heavy object and being standing for long periods of time sold out for me personally. As you mentioned this may not be too bad if you’re an income-driven workaholic but, as a family man, this is the deal breaker for me. I commend anyone who pursues this career, and as many online income statuses show, it may not be “worth” it, but that’s why you gotta love just doing it as only certain specialties generate actual income higher than the national avg.

    • @SURGICALTECHGEEK
      @SURGICALTECHGEEK  2 года назад +3

      In everything in life, you gotta start somewhere. You can't ask for higher wages without a background. With just 1 year of dedication you can drastically change your income 2 to 4x as much if you travel. All it takes is 1 year. As far as lifting rep trays, there's a max limit of weight for trays. Don't quote me but it can't be heavier than 30 lbs due to wrap and sterility issues. For calls, there's no way around it, it's required everywhere.
      It's not for everybody and I hope one day you get to find your passion. ❤️

    All this extra schooling will not raise your wages and hospitals or agencies will not pay you more for your certification. If you go to PA school it doesn't help you to gain a better position in surgery. You might be able to find a position woring with a surgeon as his private scrub like if your hired to work with a vascular surgeon as a PA or RN, or even as a ST, but these position are not readily available. Some surgeon's hire a nurse to work with them but then you will be stuck working with one surgeon in one specialty which is boring. Most hospital will not give you a big fat raise bc you went to first assist collage or training bc the OR director won't care as your hired to work where they put you!! REMEMBEREVERYONE IS REPLACEABLE. There is nothing first assist can teach you that you will not already know from working in a REAL teaching hospitals with surgical residents, OR nurses, & surgical technicians who work with residents in surgical programs or in trama centers, or being on call on 3 day weekends. Being a surgical technician is the "be all" not a OR nurse! OR NURSES ARE NUTS WHO ARE OVERLY AGRESSIVE AND MOST DONT KNOW HOW TO SCRUB. BEING A OR NURSE IS ABOUT PAPER WORK doing records. I BECAME A SURGICAL TECHNICIAN BC I LIKE TO STICK MY HAND INSIDE THE PATIENT BC ITS PART OF MY JOB; ABD I LIKE TO SEE PEOPLE CUT OPEN TO LEARN ITVWAS COLLEGE EVERY DAY. I LIKE HANDS ON NOT BC I WANT TO BE A NURSE THAT RUNS AROUND OR TO BOUNCE OFF THE WALLS TO DO A SPOUNGE COUNT as most are hysterical rude nags. If you want to be a or nurse don't become a Surgical Technologist. But if your life depends on a vax that posions you forget about being a ST! OH WORKING IN SURGERY IS VERY POLITICAL & CAN BE VERY STRESSFUL BUT DO NOT REACT TO NUTTY OR NURSES OE CRAZY SURGEONS WHO BOUNCE THEIR HEADS ON THE WALL JUST PRETEND THEIR HIDEOUS BEHAVIOR IS COMPLETELY NORMAL!! LET NOTHING EXCITE YOUR DAY IN OR. WHILEVTHE NURSE IS SCREAMING DONT FLINCH DONT LET HER TERRORIZE YOU IT TAKES 3 TO 6 MONTHS TO STAND AGAINST THESE OLD WAR HORSES!
    So if your goal or desire us to work in surgical specialties then you don't want to be a RN or PA. But if your a PA who wants to work in ER or in a clinic that's different but in surgery for me its hands on I want to be scrubed in to assist in surgery I want to stand next to or across from surgeon so I can hear his voice SO i can do my best. I've worked in every specialty and orthopedic Sucks & it does not benefit every race as hospitals allow mostly white men access to surgery like total knees & hips & spinal procedures NOT WOMAN & NOT WOMEN OF COLOR. I did not realize this when I first worked in surgery and just bc a patient does not die on the OR table does not mean they received a cure or a good results from freedom of symptoms they no longer want!! Elective procedures don't produce miracles, but emergency procedures are necessary unlike elective procedures which are the bread & butter of the hospital.
    It just means the hospitals are makeing money off of patients lives!!

I am both thankful for the experience but also regret putting so much into school for 2 years for a degree I won't use anymore. Definitely look into it more before doing it! If 20 and hour (minus benefits and taxes) is worth it go for it. @@rakailw4836 if you’re already a CST, sure, if you’re not, let me warn you that this is not one of those “stepping stone” professions, lol. I could teach someone how to be a CNA in a month, and their work is very strenuous. But as a surgical tech, you have no business having anything to do with the surgical field unless you’ve reached the clinical portion of the program. Even post program, it takes years to become good, and it requires you to have an immense amount of knowledge with regards to complex surgical procedures, as well as mastering surgeons and complex systems. You’re basically a part of every single thing the surgeon does. It’s very stressful, and is not for the faint of heart. Definitely not one of those jobs to just “try out” while going to school, lol, it’s a career that has a program that’s almost the same duration as an ADN (RN). You’re also dealing with guts, gore, and perhaps the most stuck up people in all of medicine. You’re in an absolute cutthroat environment and there is zero tolerance for people not knowing what they’re doing. Does scrubbing complex revisions, with two double decker tables decked out with trays, in a lead apron, for 12 hours sound fun? Or perhaps an endo AAA that converts to open. How about micro managing 3 different surgeons with hundreds of instruments on the field while retracting and managing hundreds of pop-offs? How about the room getting so chaotic because you can’t stop the bleeding and the patient dies? There are so many scenarios that all of us CSTs go through. Sorry if I came off like a douche, I’m just venting, lol. Or how about the nightmare ex lap in the middle of the night and it’s just you and the surgeon. You’re placing retractions, hitting bleeders, engaging staplers, etc. welcome to the world of a cst; where we are the scrub person as well as the “unofficial” surgical assistant doing double roles.
