    The sequence showing what Frieren did in the 1,000 years after Flamme's passing was 50 seconds long. The quick snapshots showing what happened in the 10 years after Frieren joined Himmel's party was 0.5 seconds long. That's to scale (1,000/ 50 = 10/ 0.5). The animators are very careful and precise in depicting the passage of time in this show, as this is one of the central theme of the story. Also, 10 / 1000 = 1/100, it recalls back to ep.1 when Frieren said her time with Himmel's party was less than 1/100 of her life.

    So a quick note about Fern and suppressing mana. If you remember back to the episodes where Fern was first introduced and Frieren starts teaching her there are a couple times where Freiren remarks about how hard it is for her to detect Fern. This is because Fern is already suppressing her mana. So either Fern naturally does this from a young age or more likely, in my opinion, Heiter taught Fern to do suppress her mana as a result of traveling with and observing Freiren for so long.

    • @huntermad5668
      @huntermad5668 8 месяцев назад +20

      She was trained but she is also natural at it as her proficient at 6 years old is ridiculous.

      @taryth. 8 месяцев назад +38

      Heiter probably trained her to do so when starting to be a mage. But Frieren also reinforced the training when she was teaching Fern. In the training montage, u can see her drawing circles around Fern, presumably to tell her to keep her mana within the circle.

    • @Despotic_Waffle
      @Despotic_Waffle 8 месяцев назад +11

      Heiter taught her to do it initially, and this is revealed more in later episodes since Heiter learned it from Frieren.

    • @leonielson7138
      @leonielson7138 8 месяцев назад +14

      I think there's a scene in Fern's early training where Frieren draws a circle around her. I think that's part of the suppression training: getting your mana aura to fit inside the circle.

    • @silbury2325
      @silbury2325 7 месяцев назад

      she has a natural knack for fine control of mana which Heiter's hypothetical training might have awakened her to. Frieren remarks on it wholly separately from Fern's subtle mana presence.
      This is reinforced when Frieren tells Fern that she can cast more spells faster than Frieren can. That likely has to do with Fern's natural fine control.
      To add, for all we know (the manga may explain this but I haven't read it), Lugner had double or triple Fern's mana capacity, but we're talking about mana capacity scales so large that output trumps capacity. What's the point of having all that mana if you can't use it? You could extrapolate that Fern was pressuring Lugner so as not to let him let out more mana in one big attack. This is purely hypothetical.

  • @asherdales

    The quick flash montage to me is a metaphor for the passage of time from Frieren's perspective. The 1000 years after the death of Flamme was slow and deliberate and her travel with Himmel, Heiter, and Eisen was just a flash.

    Did you notice that Flamme casts her spells without a staff? In typical fantasies a staff is used to focus power, speed up spell casting, boost power. That's how powerful Flamme actually is.
    Also this is just my guess but Flamme always imbues her magic in another living thing. The last two cases being plants. I'd say that is how her spells lasted so long. Spells need a source of mana, while everyone's convention is to use their own mana, Flamme helps a sapling cast a spell. And so the spell just gets stronger as the sapling grows into a forest.
    And another thing.
    The ending song is quite amusing asking if it's alright after a beheading. Last episode it said the same thing after Lugner got blasted by Fern :p

      Staves weren't in use in Flamme's time that was a later invention. Flamme is the founder of human magic and the human magic system has come a long way in 1000 years. Flamme learned from Serie, an elf which may explain why the Demon King wanted the elves exterminated. There is at least one clairvoyant among the demons and he may have been warned that the humans would learn magic and the only place for them to learn would be from the elves. So he orders that the elves be wiped out before that can happen.

    I like how this episode is structured. It's obvious from the start that Frieren is stronger than Aura and we can even guess that the scales will likely play a part.
    So instead of a big battle we learn exactly how and why she will win, get more backstory on Frieren and her relationships, and have more worldbuilding surrounding the nature of demons.
    So even though there's not much tension in the main conflict because we know Frieren will win (easily), the entire episode still builds to an immensely satisfying conclusion.
    Some minor thoughts:
    - I love how cold Frieren is towards demons, there's no mercy, they're like rabid animals that need to be put down.
    - I think Flamme did have some regrets about only training Frieren in magic to fight, which is why she taught her the flower spell, to show Frieren some of the joy of magic again.
    - I really, really like the explanation of the relation between demons and their mana, it just makes perfect sense, top tier world building.

    I like how people often call Aura very arrogant, stupid and overconfident... But she could detect mana with great precision, knew very well about instability and fluctuations in case of supression and patiently observed Frieren throughout the fight. Hearing her tone while talking about the Frieren's origin, it even appears to me that at some point Aura tried to research her background. And yet despite all this, Aura was still cautious enough to sacrifice quite a bit of her puppets just to deplete her opponent's mana and to observe a bit more.
    Considering that long mana supression is tiring (according to Frieren herself), something like hiding for life (centuries in this case) is trully unprecendented. I'm sure there were only two mages throuout the history, who were insane enough to pull this out.
    From Aura's perspective she really made the most rational decision (regardless of demon's mana-philosophy). At least it was much more logical than sacrificing half of her troops for an elimination of a single mage out of almost completly ungrounded fear. It's not like she could conjure spare warriors out of thin air - every single one of them was a trophy.
    Aura was just unlucky and her enemy was simply stronger. I'm pretty sure Frieren didn't even need to use such a trick, and her words "I'd be in trouble" were more about it being 'hard and bothersome' than 'deadly dangerous'.
    I think it's more like a habit - never fighting all-out and always preserving as much of her strength as possible. Maybe it is almost a trauma that Frieren developed after fighting Basalt. She was half-dead then and brutally ambushed short after. If not for the Flamme, the outcome would be completely one-sided.

    One of my favorite tidbits is that Flamme told Frieren to keep a low profile until she was ready to take on the Demon King. She wasn't going around killing demons and getting famous for 1000 years. So to the demons, and importantly Aura, Frieren came out of no where and has only been active for about 80 years, and when they look at her, she has a small amount of mana. So even if shes an elf that could be really old, it seems like she hasn't been a mage for very long, and doesn't train regularly. So the advice Flamme gave 1000 years ago paid off.

      @@storieswithstyleI make an interesting connection to "Maoyuu". The demon queen equates the hero to an assassin, that the war would continue even after the hero kills the demon king, because the war isn't actually about humans vs demons but haves and have nots, and also that the war has been going on for so long that national economies and CULTURES on BOTH sides have become dependent on the war continuing.
      She elaborates that the hero and demon king are monstrous aberrations in the eyes of "normal" people and that the hero's story is destined to end tragically in hindsight.
      If the war ends "now", you'll have massive armies with nothing to do and no one to feed them, the economy will crash so hard that people will starve and die to disease, people will riot and nations will immediately go back to fighting amongst themselves for thr lack of a unifying threat.

    Flamme is badass. According to what the show's portrayed so far, she's a figure of legend that people talk about in the present, she's the founder of humanity's magic system, the first person to study demons in depth and even named the species, she's an immensely powerful mage who mastered the skill of suppressing her mana output to avoid drawing attention and help in catching demons unaware, she doesn't even bother using a staff, her spells are so unique that some of the magics she cast are still functional and powerful beyond most mage's capabilities 1,000 years after her death, and she even trained Frieren and who knows how many more mages in her time.
    I also like how the manga/show opted to subvert expectations by having the legendary wizard be a hot redhead instead of an elderly guy with a long beard, while also showing that Flamme's fame is 100% due to her skill as a sorceress, and she's never sexualized in the slightest beyond the character's design being clearly an attractive woman. Hell, by the way the characters refer to her as "The Legendary Mage Flamme" in the present, I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people actually think she was a dude, in keeping with the theme of how memories change and fade, especially after so long.

    • @jayzenstyle
      @jayzenstyle 8 месяцев назад +2

      Imho I don't think her being female and also a powerful mage is a subversion, as women in both fictional and historical literature are generally associated with magic and the fey.
      Before seeing Flamme for the first time, I didn't think of her as some old man wizard(as the only few peeps I would associate that would be Merlin or Gandalf, and there's literally many other examples of very powerful mages that are female). Yeah I genuinely thought she would be old at first, my first thought upon hearing about Flamme that she is a an old lady like Morganna or Baba Yaga or Titania etc.
      But that's just me, I suppose. I generally don't quickly associate magic with men in general, they're typically the vanguard or warrior or the usual guy that are disposable in a skirmish or war. Women have have been more associated with magic than men historically, at least from what I read. Alchemy is a different matter. Fey, demonic, shaman or witch magic is what I'm talking about when it comes to the association of the concept. Or maybe because I'm not a big LOTR fan, as Gandalf and Merlin are the first male characters that popped in my head when talking about magic.

    If you notice, Fern was already suppressing her mana when Frieren first met her. Frieren remarked that she already had excellent control. I presume that (minor spoiler here)...
    that since Heiter figured it out later in their travels (that Frieren suppressed hers) he got Fern to try to figure it out so she would suppress hers too before she even met Frieren.

    One of the things that it doesn't state directly, but that seems to be the case is that humans seem to be born with higher mana amounts sometimes and they have the ability to grow them faster. Hence why you have someone like Flamme who would only live to be 80 or so versus demons who live to be hundreds of years old.
    About Frieren's memory, she remembers everything but it seems to take her time to process things. because she lives so long she could spend a long time doing something and it would just be like a sort of short phase.

    about your comment on 25:00 about Frieren not remembering. It's never stated but i think there are parallels to how Frieren treats her relationships, memories and belongings. Time eventually degrades things and people die off, and memories also fade, so someone like Frieren that lost any semblance of family so long ago and has been alone since then for such a long time, may regards everything as equally "disposable" because she knows time eventually separates her from "it", so she doesn't take care to keep memories, belongings or relationships. That is, until she realizes how much she lost by being so callous. In a sence, That is the moment Frieren begins actually "living" purposefully, and not just existing.

    Perhaps Flamme could have killed the Demon King. But she would have never would have had the chance. Flamme was famous in her own time. She would have been seen as a true threat. When she met Frieren, she realized she had a chance for a do-over. She turned Frieren into an assassin, who could walk into the gates of hell and never raise an alarm. She was a nobody, unknown to all, a girl both small in stature and possessing insignificant mana.

    I said you'd get your horror aspect! Hope you liked it! I especially liked watching your reaction because it answer several questions you've been asking for a fair number of episodes.
    1. She lived in obscurity until after she defeated the Demon King.
    2. Demons can't suppress their mana long-term because to them that is the height of madness.
    3. Frieren learned the flower spell from Flamme a thousand years ago, but didn't really start her hobby of picking up new spells until an "idiot" complimented her on it. Said idiot being Himmel, the day she astounded the rest of the Hero's Party by casting the flower spell in and around a ruined temple.
    4. The more time you spend training magic, the more magic/mana you have overall.
    5. The Demon King ordered the extermination of the elves because due to point 4 above and their enormous lifespans, they were the one race that could truly threaten him.
    6. Frieren was taught how to continuously train her magic. Remember how suppressing her magic was tiring? That's using her magic skills to suppress her magic energy. Now imagine getting so used to it you can't stop - not even in your sleep. So she's effectively training 24 hours a day for a thousand years straight. That's easily three times the training time spent by most fanatics who would train eight hours a day every day, and it's hard to believe anybody could keep that up for very long. That was how Flamme trained her to grow to be stronger than the Demon King. The down side is Aura had found a similar style of training - never letting her control of her zombie puppets go, thus effectively training her continuously as well. This is why the two were actually not too far apart in power levels.
    Last, I'll say, Aura had it coming. I haven't read the light novel or manga, but I've come to learn from those who have, those suits of armor were NOT empty. They were filled with the rotting headless corpses of her prior victims. Even if most had rotted to dust and rattling bones, I can't imagine what that looked, sounded, and worst of all smelled like. Easy to see why Freiren considers it disgusting.

    While the Manga doesn't say why the demon king ordered a genocide of the elves, given that elves are immoral and can continue to grow more powerful in magic over thousands of years, the demon king most likely considered elves to be the only real threat to demon kind. Since demons completely look down on humans because of their mortality and very short live spans. Only a very small number of exceptionally powerful humans can be considered a threat to the demons. But elven mages live far longer than even demons do. So they can easily grow more powerful than demons. There were never all that many elves though. They are like Tolkien elves, immortal and rarely having children. But demons are pretty numerous and were able to nearly wipe out all of the elves. So the demons are the main reason that elves are nearly extinct.

    My take isn't so much as the flash back montages are Frieren's recollection but as a way of representing time to the audience. Her time between Flamme and the Himmel were slow and lazy as the passage of time marched on for a thousand years and then the brief cuts of her journey with Himmel happened so quickly against the rest of her life that it was barely any time at all. I would not be surprised if the actual time of the two montages had the difference being a 100 to 1 in the anime's runtime.

    Edit 2: There's a reason Frieren has taken a deeper interest in Fern. It's likely she she's not just herself in Fern, but a better version of herself.
    This episode hints at why there are so few elves in the world. The Demon King ordered his minions to find and eradicate all Elves. Why? My hunch is because like demons, Elves can live exasperatingly long lives. Humans and dwarves who have such short lives to master their skills to face demons while Elves can take hundreds of years to master their skills. They are the biggest threat to Demon-kind.

    I'd say that the reason why suppressing your mana while fighting another mage is cowardly, is because of the difficulty of seeing how strong somoene is with their mana.
    Aka; Its a leftover from old times, a time demons are still stuck in where might makes right.
    You cant "dress up" mana. You cant wear fancy clothes to show you're a good mage. You show youre a good mage by displaying how much mana you have.
    Just like how a Chess Grandmaster would be playing unfair if they went to a newbie Chess tournament undercover, suppressing your mana while fighting another mage is unfair in the same way.

    Thank you for the interesting video. I'm enjoying watching your videos. The explanation of German words is interesting.
    However, unfortunately I feel that there are too many pauses.
    The same thing happened in the last few episodes, episode 9.
    That could ruin the flow of the story that the creators have been so particular about creating.
    It feels like the music of Mozart or Beethoven is explained note by note and measure by measure.
    For me and many Japanese people, we value things such as the distance from the other person, the slight differences in reactions during conversation, the speed at which lines are spoken, and facial expressions when people are silent.
    It's difficult to explain, but in Japanese it's called ``間=Ma''.
    And this program has been created with very particular attention to them.
    I would like you to understand time, space, and changes in emotional state due to them as a series of flows.
    In this 10th episode, continue from the previous 9th episode by accumulating small reminiscences of the past, and the tension gradually increases, and then it is suddenly released at the end. I think that's why it's called a masterpiece.
    I guess it can't be helped since the purpose of the video is for you to react and analyze, but I think there are a lot of things that are overlooked because there are a lot of pauses.
    Enjoy advanced animation, elegant dialogue, and magnificent music OST even more.

      Hi, I know there are many pauses, but this way I am able to fully immerse myself in the brilliant material. I have tried other ways and they after a while felt like a chore. I understand that there are subtleties, I get most of them when I rewatch stuff. I adapt a research method here called "think aloud", which indeed has the problem that you might get redundancies. Things like the tension building up etc. are not lost, though. But they are not what I think about when there are other layers of the story at play. E.g. during attack on titan, I do indeed let situations breathe because there are some things where pauses interrupt my experience. =) So it is mostly personal prefereance. =) I would be interested though about things I overlooked? I would be very curious. =) All the best!

    I think Frieren remembers what Basalt had said before he died. He probably told her something along the lines of demons are sapient creatures who are trying to learn to exist as people do, but that humanity has only shown them fighting, so they only know that society means fighting. Frieren hasn't struck first. She's waited for the demons to make the first strike. And then she turns their own methods of trying to kill her against them.
    With Qual, she used his own spell against him. With Draht, he tried to decapitate her, and her method to kill him was to go for his neck and sever it from the body. And Aura tried to use her overwhelming mana to overpower Frieren, which Frieren then turned back on her by showing her even more overwhelming mana aura. She has given the demons each a chance to not be bad guys, and when they inevitably show their asses, she hands it back to them.

    The reason what Flamme, Frieren, and Fern (I _just_ realized they all start with F) do is "a mockery to magic" is it's like Superman walking into a weight lifting competition as Clark Kent in a baggy tweed sweater and khakis - they're intentionally sandbagging themselves, and to an outside observer appear to "not be taking it seriously".
    Demons on the other hand are the ones striding up to the competition in the smallest tank tops they could find, flexing with all their might - because to them, showing off their prowess and mastery of the material that they've worked hard to cultivate is status and prestige.

    They explain why demons don't hide their mana, but I have a guess as to why mages typically don't either.
    Your mana is a physical representation of your experience as a mage; it is a testament to the work and study you have dedicated yourself to. By hiding it constantly, you're deliberately being deceitful about your credentials. In a town, it might be like pretending you didn't study medicine to avoid needing to treat people. In a fight, it would be like pretending to be a novice just to clown on your opponent. In the latter situation it's understandable in a life or death situation, but it's easy to see why doing so would be considered uncouth if there's an implied mutual respect between mages.

    19:30 also a mundane thing but if you pay real close attention Frieren (the character and her VA for voice lines) becomes more emotive/expressive in moments of attachment or around people she had a bond with. Here it was her turn around to ask Flamme to teach her the flower spell (she did it slightly faster than she would normally) and her VA's voice work you can hear more emotion in it even though it's a very basic line of dialogue to show how much Frieren wanted to learn that spell.

      Yes, agreed. VAs from Japan are truly the best in the world. Loved the Heiter VA as well when he said "frieren" shortly before dying. So much emotion and nuance. =)

    Yep, Basalt is a volcanic Rock, its in Fact one of the volcanic rock material you will find most on Earth (approximately 90% of Volcanic Rocks on Earth are Basalt)
    Also, you saw in this Case when they mentioned earlier in another Episode that a strong willed Person can temporarily resist Auras Magic, this is what happend with Aura herself now. If she wouldnt have resisted, her Head would have been sent flying immediately, but she tried to resist her own Magic and the Command Frieren gave, which was the Reason she hesitated and prolonged her own suffering.

    Ah, Mitternacht. Das geht ja noch. I do not know how a linguist would call this as I come from the STEM field, put the pacing and pattern... the way this is told , where we all know what the ending will be, and nonetheless it is glorious... is peak writing or better storytelling imo.

    Even though they shared the same goal before they really knew each other, I think Flamme felt a lot of guilt behind teaching Frieren pretty much only strategy and magic for combat, even pushing her to live in isolation. I think that played a role in why she chose to leave that grimoire that told Frieren about Aureole, a way of both rewarding her for living out their pact and apologizing for not giving her more personal connections.

    • @storieswithstyle
      @storieswithstyle  8 месяцев назад

      Yes, it was very harsh, but tragically necessary. =( Also, she might know that she was her only connection and wanted more for her. =(

    One thing to note about Friren is that she has a very specific habit when it comes to killing demons, and that is to always let them understand that they have lost right before they die.
    She could have blasted Qual immediately after removing his seal, but she instead made sure he understood how obsolete and outmatched he was (while also giving Fern valuable combat training).
    She could have decapitated Drat with her first attack, but instead she took both his hands and waited just long enough for him to understand his defeat before killing him.
    She didn't blast aura's head of after tipping the scales, but instead ordered her to kill herself which is both a way to humiliate her by killing her with her own spell, and a way to make the death take long enough that she has time to agonize over it.
    IMO there are two reasons for this behaviour.
    The first and most obvious one is her hatred for demons.
    The second and more subtle one is the fact that she hides her true power. If you constantly hide your strength, you will develop a desire to flex a little bit every now and then. It might be a small desire, but it will exist regardless.
    So, to satisfy this minor urge, she doesn't do it in a way that could leave a rumor or anything similar behind, she only flexes on her enemies who will die in the next few moments and will never get the chance to tell anyone.
    Like you said, so many small but very cool details in this show :)

      @storieswithstyle  8 месяцев назад +1

      Wow, have not thought about it, but you are indeed right. =) I think she does that because Himmel would have wanted it? Perhaps remembering the demon child and what he said there initially?

      @@storieswithstyle I'm not sure if it's related to Himmel or not, but the reason I noticed it is because it's something I can identify with.
      I absolutely despise people who act like they didn't lose an argument when they clearly got out argued by both facts and logic, because I genuinely consider that sort of reality ignoring attitude to be a growing problem today.
      The least harmful version of this is flat earthers, but there does exist several far worse versions that are actively harmful (I've been personally harmed by someone like this too).
      So whenever I see people who are like this, I feel a desire to see them being made to understand how wrong they are.
      It's not quite the same feeling Friren has, but it's similar :)

    Im sure you caught it, but at the part you cut at 9:34, the important part of the conversation is despite Frieren and Flamme both having this extreme bordering on genocidal hate for demons, they both love magic in a deeper sense than just its use for combat. A theme we've seen before with Fern and we see explored further on when Flamme was Old. And I think this is probably the motivation behind Frieren collecting spells, besides Himmel and her party. Flamme mostly taught Frieren combat spells, now Frieren is free to go on a quest to uncover the more whkmsical side of Magic which she adored so much.

    I don't know if you'll see this, but I wanted to point out something that Heiter said. It's easy to think of Frieren as carrying the party of heroes, but every single one of them was a monster in their own right. When they met Frieren, Heiter said that she has about a fifth of his mana. He was probably around 20 years old, and if Frieren was still suppressing her mana to 1/10th of her real mana, that means Heiter at age 20 had half the mana of Frieren at age 1000something. That's insane

    Remember how Lügner called Frieren a genius, who doesn't know the struggle of hard work? Like Aura, he only knew that she simply showed up 80 years ago with no idea of her age. Meaning Flammes teachings took full effect on him too
    I think that she also remembers Flamme quite well, because 50 years is quite a lot for Frieren back then, since this was a thousand years ago and she was "only" a few centuries old, otherwise she would have said that she is over 2000 years old. 50 years of like 400 years would be an 8th of her lifetime.
    We got a lot from Flamme this episode and it's always great when we see stuff of her, but mostly we will now just see the things she has taught to Frieren.
    Notably, we have never seen any other elf or dwarf at this point. For Dwarfs this might be a coincidence, but for elves we know why.

    You must deceive your allies to deceive your enemies is all this is about.
    Frieren could have beaten the sages they encountered on the hero's journey, but the demons and their king would have become aware of her if a mage went around capable of slaying the sages.
    So distracting, avoiding or sealing them was a better option.
    Through her live in obscurity and solitude Frieren seems to have developed some issues, like constantly belittling and underestimating herself and her work.
    Before she said how humans deciphered Zoltrak and developed it, yet we later learned she was a major asset in that work.
    Similarly another character we get to know later is also majorly involved in humans development of magic.
    Raw mana depends on inborn affinity, age and training, that is why humans are unlikely to outperform older demons in that regard, less even ancient elves who can live even longer.

    i have actually wondered this to some degree. what if demons had evolved from monsters as we know, but then elves evolved from demons? it would be kinda interesting. it would explain frieren's lack of understanding of emotion and society (the logical answer to this though is just that she has a different perspective due to her longevity)
