    what I love is how after all the talk of how Stoltz's pure white cape and then Stark accidentally make them dirty, he wasn't angry at all. He doesn't care about being the strongest or the pride of his village. He care about his brother more than anything.

       @Aoitetsugakusha U know pride and vanity both were a deadly sin at some point.
      Pride especially was contentious, as people specifically added it as a sin to make others servile.
      I love this choice of name and theme the author picked. Not sure if she knows the history behind it but even of she didn't it shows that parallel like this happen in the human experience
      The same idea emerges twice!

      Stoltz knew that this was a fight to the death, and little Stark with his little wooden sword, could not help in any way. Better that one member of the family survive than die a needless death. So get out of here Stark!

    I remember reading a theory that The Story of the Sword has changed over time, the same way that multiple Hero's legends have been modified over time, so has the story of the Sword. And the real Test of the Sword is about how nobody will be able to move it, but will go do the right thing anyways regardless if they have the sword or not.

    My theory of why Fern didn’t want Stark to carry Frieren: two reasons. One, she projects and assumes that Stark is a pervert when she is really the low-key pervert of the group and second she doesn’t want him to carry anyone else but her.
    Also, I’d love to see you watch Tanya the Evil

    • @storieswithstyle

      Yes, the aspect of her wanting to carry her is also something I think that played a part. She really sees herself as Frieren's mother sometimes and cares deeply for her. =)

    I’m Chinese, and I have a theory to explain why Himmel failed to pull out the sword in the cave.
    Remember Kraft the monk?
    He seems to have no weapons with him!
    as far as I know, a monk in China is able to use many weapons, so I assume Kraft could do that too, he just doesn’t want to.
    I assume that the sword in the cave
    belongs to Kraft and he gave up that sword thousands of years ago, because something huge for him happened. Maybe his best friend (his companion or even a lover) died and no one remembers him since then(…and he started to know humans, another elf and human love story…)
    That pattern happens a lot in chinese fantasy novels…the hero lost Someone important and he berries his name and changes his identity, becomes religious, just to escape his past and guilt and keep himself from self destruction.
    The hero would normally injure himself at first so that his power is lost forever and no one would recognize him, or he would cut his hair short, cry to deathly till he becomes mental or silent, or even blind, the he would leave his weapon and armor as his tomb stone, telling other people that he’s dead.
    In such stories the hero always returns in the end, helps the new hero and saves the day.
    Remember what the little village chief said,
    who pulls out this sword could be the hero (Kraft) only who could defeat the world’s great destruction.
    This way of speaking sounds like a spell already…
    That sentence makes sense without the name Kraft.
    Only Hero Kraft can pull out his sword, Himmel and other heros can not, that could be a lost magic of the goddess.
    The tale has been modified because Kraft’s name is long forgotten, even by the villagers,
    his sword becomes the sword of the hero and the tale just goes on without his name! remember Graf Granat and how he berries the fallen heros? that is likely to be inspired by the hero’s sword.
    Kraft doesn’t think that this world needs him to be the hero, because he’s not, or at least he doesn’t think so high of himself any more after what happened and after so many years.
    and I assume that the demon king is no match to what he has defeated, so he thinks that the time has not come for him to pull his sword out again. He believes that other heros will manage to save the world as well.
    He simply travels the world to save anyone in need,
    because he’s a monk now, that is what goddess would do.

    As far as I can tell, Hero is interchangeably a class (e.g Warrior, Mage, Monk) and a title in the show/manga, which I guess runs parallel to Eisen calling his party warriors.
    And again, I love that the show gives credit to other strong people like Stoltz, the son of Graf Granat, and the Hero of the South in such subtle tidbits. Anime usually introduces strong side characters as antagonists or as "power level benchmarks" and don't really have much personality at all; they really put in effort to make these characters seem alive as people who also put in effort to survive- just awesome world building to me.
    I also know there's two or three details here that I won't spoil, shown in mere seconds but will play a great significance in the future.

    • @storieswithstyle
      @storieswithstyle  8 месяцев назад +7

      Now that I think more about it, perhaps that is how Fern saw it. We know Frieren was knocked out, so she knows what happened from Fern. We later see Stark care for many people, so it kinda implies it is how Fern/Frieren saw it. =) That is of course if we take the story as from their perspective (which I currently think is likely). =)

      @@storieswithstyle some theory say that Fern is a closet perv, since she see some situation as pervert situation when it is not, for example when Kraft try to warm himself up by squat without cloth, or she comment on Stark "sword" without his consent.

    • @quigonkenny
      @quigonkenny 8 месяцев назад +2

      @@storieswithstyleI think Fern is just that type of person. I think we've probably all known girls who have acted motherly from a young age, or boys who acted protectively. Sometimes that's just part of someone's personality.
      Another aspect to consider is that as old as she is, Frieren is immature. I think Frieren is still the elf equivalent of a teenager, probably less mature at this point even than Fern or Stark. She certainly doesn't act like an adult sometimes, and she's clearly much smaller than either Fern or Stark. Normally you could chalk that up to "elves are small", but there was no question that Kraft was a fully-fledged adult. He was tall even for a human. In short, Frieren still needs to be mothered to some degree, and Fern is perfect for that role.

    Hamburg steak is what a fried patty of minced meat is called, in Japanese it is often shortened to just hamburg. That's also where the name hamburger comes from, when they put a hamburg steak into a bread roll.

  • @CeleriaRosencroix
    @CeleriaRosencroix 8 месяцев назад +3

    The issue with the Hamburg Steak is that, yes, it is something that is named after a city in our real world, presumably because of the fact that immigrants to America came from Hamburg and made the meal famous. It's well known in Japan by that name, and it's probably easy to simply have them say what is most familiar in that way; however, you might know it by the name of *frikadelle,* which is a much older name for the idea, and I do not think that it is unreasonable for such a German-inspired culture to have such a dish in their culinary repertoire, as such.

    先(SEN) = fast
    生(SEI) = lived
    The simple logic would be that since they were born early, they would have knowledge to learn.
    It is a widely used honorific title because of its ambiguous meaning.

I.E the fights scenes in the Manga are kind of mid, like I've seen worse but I've read far better. But the Anime goes so hard with those scenes it's insane.

    The only reason why their called hamburg steaks is because that's what they call them in Japan 😂. In English however hamburgers are obviously the things you get at fast food places. The japanese version is called a Salisbury steak in English. However both get their origin from Hamburg with the ground meat steak that labourers and travellers used to eat there if I recall. The Japanese version of Hamburg steak is closer to the original.

    Just a note about the Hamburg steak scene - it is actually a dish that was made popular in America in the late 1800s. It is obviously made from ground beef and is considered the precursor to the hamburger (as it is literally a hamburger patty without the bread). The Hamburg steak isn't really popular in America anymore and is usually served in the form of a Salisbury steak (same idea but covered with gravy). American style diners in Japan often have the Hamburg steak as a menu item and I suspect the mangaka probably drew inspiration to include it from that experience.

    It's actually funny about the whole romanticising heroes and the stories becoming more distorted over time. There's eventually new statues made that make them look different. Like Himmel being this massive muscular type hero with a giant sword. Even statues that are supposed to be of Flamme are statues of a stately man because most humans don't remember that Flamme was a woman after a 1000 years. The stories of heroes pass into legend and myth. And no one except those few immorals who were actually there remember the truth.

    One thing I remembered from last episode. They are going to city of Außert. Most english speakers probably don't know what an ß is, and might think it is a B. Its always interesting to run across letters that are common in other languages, but don't exist in english. Actually english does have the long s, ſ , but its no longer used, but still shows up in old documents like the Declaration of Independence. But now people confuse the ſ for an f. There is also the letter þ, but it doesn't exist in english anymore, but still appears in Icelandic.

    I've come across multiple discussions about the naming of hamburg steaks here, and it's genuinely interesting to me that people are fine with characters/locations named after German words, but may find it odd when there's a dish named after a German city. I wonder why.

    • @flowerdolphin5648
      @flowerdolphin5648 8 месяцев назад +1

      Hamburg steaks are a real thing in Japan, that's probably why. Many find it odd in real life too. Since in the west we're used to Hamburgers being, you know, a burger with buns and lettuce and all, and in Japan if you say ハンバーグ you get just the meat.

    • @storieswithstyle
      @storieswithstyle  8 месяцев назад +1

      I guess it is also because it is "ham" and "burger" and they were just mashed together? Then the city resemblance would be a coincidence. "burger" meaning both burger but also "someone living in a castle/walled city" :D

    • @flowerdolphin5648
      @flowerdolphin5648 8 месяцев назад +2

      @@storieswithstyle the city reference is justified. Hamburger steak came to the US via immigrants from Hamburg, that's why it's called that. And when people invented hamburgers as we know them today, they just dropped the "steak" part of the name.

    • @kevinsealter
      @kevinsealter 8 месяцев назад

      Thanks for the replies.
      So, perhaps it's because people can sense our history in its name. A more literal naming like the jumbo berry special would've worked better. I totally get it, though. I wouldn't be able to keep a straight face if they added gravy and called it loco moco. I just don't know why I'd feel this way.
      I also wonder what the actual burgers they ate a while ago should've been called by this logic. The word "sandwich" also has an Earthy origin, and frankly, every word we use is invented on Earth. The line's fine.

  • @ChrisH43

    They are both very innocent but Fern assumes more. (Some say she is a little perv herself because she assumes)
    Stark was simple wondering bevor if his brother would have bee worthy for the sword. He himself does not see so and even if he had that valor he is an axe wielder.
    Those burgers are a real thing in Japan btw 😅

    I had to laugh at Frieren not being able to walk just yet after waking up. It's a running gag - she's a terrible morning person, with morning being whenever she's waking up. As for Fern not letting Stark carry Frieren, did you notice it was when Stark offered to use the princess carry (in his arms, a traditionally very romantic carry)? I see this scene and have to wonder if it's the legendary green-eyed monster named "Jealousy."
    In the cave of the sword, I think Frieren made one of the most profound statements of the entire anime: "...to the point that their original nature eventually disappears." I think it reflects her bitterness and pain in how that very fate had begun to affect Himmel, even as it had affected her teacher Flamme so long ago.
    I also noted how Stark did NOT make the attempt to draw the sword. It begs two questions for me. First is why not? I suspect he feels he's either not worthy, or perhaps just not the right one to do it even if he could succeed. Second is what would have happened if he had? I think we would have had more solid determinations about his personality than I suspect would really help the story at this time if he'd made the attempt, so I personally consider him not making the attempt (at least where we could see it) to be a good thing. Either way, Stark is clearly the kind who has learned to live in the moment, and I think that helps him a lot.
    One thing I noticed the first time while watching your reaction - the color of Stark's clothes! His village favored the white of purity, ideally perfectly clean after a battle. Meanwhile Stark openly bears the red of blood, frequently seeing it stained with his own. Talk about a symbol of difference!
    The look on Stark's face when he realized those giant humburg steaks were actually birthday presents for a warrior, and he had been acknowledged as such for so long. The sheer awe and joy at that revelation was so uplifting. And yeah I was looking for whoever was chopping onions at that point.
    Last, I ship Stark & Fern too - let "Stern" sail!

    Funnily enough, in the German dub they don't say "Hamburg steak" or "Hamburger" at all, but "Fleischklops" while in the English dub they keep the "Hamburg steak". Very strange choice from the German dubbing people. It is even more unfortunate as the words "Hamburger steak" are clearly visible on the recipe shown.

    Himmel not pulling the sword is a perfect subversion of the chosen hero trope. This party were not the perfect chosen heroes. They we competent and determined. They succeed because they were just strong enough but they weren't destined to defeat the demon king. They weren't fulfilling some prophecy or anything. They had just worked very hard and had given it everything they had. But every stories ending is a new stories beginning. This is the story of a new party of heroes, Frieren just happens to be an immoral elf who is leading the next generation. There is still fights to be fought and still very powerful demons who survived and are on the rise again in the north. So our new party will become heroes in their own right for the next generation.

    Hamburg steaks are popular in Japan so most people don't make a connection between their name and the city because it's just a common dish that was originally adapted from Western cuisine and the name basicaclly has no connotation other than that but after several decades it's just part of everyday life and it doesn't seem any more out of place than a stew. Hell, the berry ice cream sundae Stark ate a few episodes back is something you also wouldn't normally expect in a medieval fantasy setting but it's a very common trope in anime/manga to have strangely "modern" cultures in medieval-ish settings. I mean, even their clothes look more like real world kind of modern clothes than medieval fantasy outfits.

    Hamburger steak is a very popular dish in Japan.
    If you ask a child, it is probably the second most popular dish after curry rice.
    See below for basic cooking instructions. (Sorry, it's instructed in Japanese.)

    漢堡排 Hamburg, or rather, ハンバーグ / hanbāgu / Hamburg steak, is a common and popular dish in Japan. I would consider ハンバーグ a home and family dish Japanese moms perpared at home. Also you can easily find the dish in a lot of chain "family restaurant" (ファミリーレストラン) in Japan.
    Interesting enough, other than Japanese and Korean entries, there's a German Wikipedia entry Familienrestaurant.
    Plus, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamburg_steak#Around_the_world , I think Google would be a bit confused and send you to the "patty" wiki page.

      Hahaha, that is so awesome. Yeah, I guess it is not referencing Hamburg, but more a short form of ham burger? :D I need to try one, though, I love the idea of hamburger. :D

    This scenes between Stark and Stoltz crushed me emotionally. The love the elder brother showed was so beautiful and touching. The cut of Stoltz cooking the Hamburg Steak for Stark and then the "Run, Stark, You have to live." made me just weep for our poor boy. Who would have known cooking and eating a ridiculously large patty of ground meat would have such impact? Genius writing. Genius animation. Genius show.

    22:47 It's so beautiful that after explaining that his white robes have a very important meaning and that Stoltz's prowess is displayed by his robes remaining impeccable, he not only does not care that Stark splashed a little bit of mud on him, but he then purposely dirties his white impeccable robes even more to teach Stark.

    From what I've seen through multiple different anime Hamburg Steak is just a food that exists in Japan. It's not like a weird name that Frieren made for a food in their world its a real name for a real life food.

    I think you might be reading the whole thing on teh sword a bit too literally. The comparsion of it and Himmel's fake sword at the beginning I think were meant to showcase that the prophecy was too prescriptive. HImmel wasn't destined to be teh ehro: He became the hero through his own effort and such. I don't get a feeling the show tries to undermine the iddea that he he defeated the Demon King with a "Real bad guy" showing up. It's more about how a lot of folks gave up without even trying when they couldn't draw the sword and he did it anyways without it.

      This is a very important point. One's fate is your life set in stone, chosen by the The Three Fates. One cannot escape his/her fate. But one's destiny is the destination, you yourself chose for your life as Himmel does here. Himmel becomes the real hero only by his choice!

    26:53 Stark is standing there with his whole family, scared but still there, with a wooden practice sword, until his brother tells him to run. He was too little to make a difference against a platoon of demons in any case, especially with a wooden sword. This is also why I think Stark pictures his brother when he see's the heroes sword.....his brother is his hero.

    There's a part in the novel Blindsight, where they talk about Game theory, and basically you should never tell anyone your birthday. If you tell them and you don't get anything, you feel sad. If you tell them and they bring you something, then maybe it's b/c you guilted them into it...
