I think one reason for a car chase to work, we really need to feel we are in the driver seat. A lot of car chase scenes misses showing anything inside the car and misses the mark.

I remember seeing that film as a kid, and laughing myself silly with the over the top crashes. Not just the sheer volume of cars, but the way many cars flew into the pile ups upside down and sideways.
And I thought you were going to mention my favourite bit, the way the blues mobile just fell apart at the end. Can't blame it after all that.

I have to disagree about the surreal aspects brining Blues Brothers down. To me it's all about how the scene keeps escalating in its absurdity while keeping that practical filmmaking. I honestly think some of the Fast and Furious movies do this pretty well (5, 6, 7 in particular), though the newest entries have way too much unnecessary CGI.
Glad you included Speed Racer, as it's mostly CGI but it commits so much to that style it actually works. I think Ultraviolet's biggest problem is it just feels weightless, you don't feel the impacts and the speed, it's just a game cutscene. Speed Racer uses the effects to put you in the driver's seat.

Agreed with Speed Racer and with Ultraviolet! Blue Brothers - the issue for me is, I know it's a comedy and it CAN be surreal. But if I'm putting it up against The French Connection - as a pure car chase vs car chase, FC wins out based on that surrealism!

The second half of Death Proof is just a fantastic bit of film. The character introductions, the loooong, raw chase sequence, how the characters attitudes and motivations evolve along the way and the final conclusion. That chase sequence would look like it was right out of the 70s or 80s if not for all the more modern background vehicles they pass or crash into along the way.

Blue Brothers and Mad Max set the standard when I was a kid, yet the original Fast & Furious still holds a special place in my heart because it feels like a 80s or 90s film with upgraded recording technology and more refinement. Can I suggest the car chase scene from The Raid 2 for a future video? It manages to bring the visceral impact of the fight scenes into the car chase, peppered with simultaneous fighting and injury, it also includes some very interesting camera work (there's a nice behind the scence video for 'that shot' in the chase) and is a different take to just watching the cars drive around a street.
One man is dying, his accomplice is being driven to his assumed demise and between the two of them it's a drive to survive (it also then sets up the 3 finale fight scence - all together roughly 45mins of action gold).

I have never watched Bullet [sic?] but I have heard the McQueen car chase is pretty good. To me, what I've seen personally, Blues Brothers (the original 80s version) still ranks up there on Top 5, perhaps even Top 1. I know it's difficult because it's a long movie and there are multiple scenes, but Blues Brothers just has every single version of one you could imagine. I love when they crash through the government building (near the end). Death Proof was Tarantino's best film until Inglorious Basterds, hands down.
You missed the chance to show the hyper awesome drift dodge from Baby Driver's opening scene.
I'm glad you showcased more great practical chases than Fury Road, since we all know that entire movie is the best car chase ever, it is no longer even in the conversation.

If you do a part 3 for this series, I would like to nominate the original 1974 version of "Gone in 60 Seconds". The main car chase is over 40 minutes long, and runs the gamut of visceral, frantic, and at times desperate action that makes a memorable car chase. The acting and story is a bit basic as it was a pet project of the director's (who before was a junkyard owner who was a film enthusiast), but oh that car chase.

Developed a bit of a migraine which was beginning to subside when I found my cat had had an accident so I had to clean that up. I said before that these short breakdowns and comparisons are really fascinating. It was more than just more example, you presented a different set of issues. @@MarcusFlemmings It's no biggy, I don't often get migraines and I love my cat. I often say that if we didn't have bad days we wouldn't recognise the good ones. Interaction is so important for content creators, not just for the algorithm but for you to know that what you're doing works and is appreciated. Even genuine criticism can be constructive.
I've had some great interactions with people who I disagree with, they can actually explain why they feel like they do. I've also had encountered some people wo say, it's a crap movie, it's an idiotic scene, it's a badly written character. You don't need to be uber-articulate or be able to write an essay... but just give some sense of why they feel this way. Again, great channel and even though I'm not typically a livestream guy I've enjoyed the couple I've dropped into.

As a homage to B-movies, Both are fun, and very independent of one another. They are two standalone movies. Planet Terror is camp fun. Death Proof can get a bit.. Dull. Personally, any time I rewatch it, I skip the first half completely, and start with the second half - the final chase sequence is one of my all-time favorites.

    • @jwismar11
      @jwismar11 Месяц назад +4

Death Proof is a spot-on and very intentional homage to a lot of low budget movies from the 70s. But low-budget meant, for example, that there were lengthy scenes of people talking and doing nothing, because that's inexpensive to film. Action setpieces are expensive, so there's only two of them. To a modern audience, Death Proof really seems slow and talky. And, again, that was exactly the goal. But audiences didn't love it.

    • @MarcusFlemmings

What did you think of the bank vault car chase seen in Fast 5? I thought it was one of the best car chases ever done. I feel like they’ve been trying to top it ever since and it’s one of reasons the franchise has become so mediocre. They pulled off something fantastical once. Now, they’re locked into doing it again at the expense of every other quality that would make that kind of film enjoyable. Would love to hear your thoughts on it.
