Girafarig is a giraffe because it's a pun in Japanese, it's Japanese name "キリンリキ" or "Kirinriki" is literally just the japanese words for giraffe and telepathy, it's a giraffe because it's name is giraffe telepathy because you can spell the word telepathy like giraffe backwards. This pun doesn't work in literally any other language so we're left with just spelling giraffe twice

I fell away from Pokemon about gen 4, so I had no idea that Galarian Corsola or Cursola existed until I watched this. Props to Pokemon for being that assertive with their environmental message.
As i am studying now for my master degree in marine sciences, i want to add a bit of info on corals after what skyen said in corsola section: not only is climate change, but with the heat there was an abnormal growth in the population of a little thing of nightmares called thorncrown starfish that, unfortunately eats A LOT of the coral polyps, speeding up the bleaching. Fun fact these nightmare fuel starfish are represented in pokemon by Mareanie and Toxapex
@@juneparly Holy cow, I had to have blinked at the worst possible time. It seems pretty obvious now, but maybe it's just cause I was clued in lmao. Thank you though, I'm glad I went back to catch it, it's pretty funny.
If I may about a huge missed visual opportunity for Galarian corsola. When coral bleaches, as the variant is meant to demonstrate, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the coral is dead and in fact can still have potential to heal back to its full vibrancy. However, and where I feel game freak missed out, what makes coral distinctly dead is when it’s covered in moss and algae, having expelled its symbiotic relationship permanently. The incorporation of a droopy hanging algae on the galarian variant would have made for a much more visually interesting design in my opinion.
the reason gen 2 designs are that very simple is because of the anime in purpose to save the most money as possible in animation iirc. Later Sugimori on gen 3 would go all out on designs bringing more details to each pokemon's body
21:48 - Pineco is not actually a pinecone, it's a bagworm moth made to look like a pinecone. In real life the cocoon of an Evergreen Bagworm looks closer to Pineco than it does to Forretress, which is why I was always confused as to how they were related or why it became a steel-type in the first place (instead of, you know, a moth). In my opinion, they did it much better with Burmy (who actually does turn into a moth), and I think comparing Pineco and Burmy is a great way to contrast design philosophy from early gen Pokemon to later Gen when they had more to work with (i.e. designing for Game Boy Color vs. designing for Nintendo DS).
Two down. Seven to go. Would be eight, but we know Arceus is going to fly by pretty quick with us looking at the alt forms at the same time. Keep up the wonderful work as always Skyen. ^__^
Actually looking at the dex and the only thing in Arceus that could be covered is Enamorus and even then Enamorus could be put together with the other genies.
You manage to pronounce almost every Pokémon name slightly different than how everyone else pronounces it. I swear every time I see what the next Pokémon you’re gonna review is I’m like: okay how is he gonna pronounce this thing’s name.
Unown being made to be some sort of semi-sentient psychic spirit pokemon with some relation to Arceus and some influence over space/time/reality is by far the biggest glow up of the games and media in general
Yeah but it actually happened really fast. Of course Arceus didn't exist until gen 4 but Unown got their reality warping powers in the third movie between the original Gold/Silver and Crystal releases.
I think the incorporation of the Jungian Shadow is a good angle to explain why Girafarig is based on a giraffe. In my opinion, Girafarig's shorter neck symbolizes immaturity, because Girafarig is at the moment unable to reconcile with it's shadow and only after incorporating this element into it's own persona, the Girafarig will reach mental maturity and become a much stronger pokemon(and individual)
I feel like Lugia deserved at least some mention of XD GoD's Shadow Lugia. That thing did what no other pokemon had done up to that point or honestly since, it was menacing and unnatural. Like "Cypher, what have you done to this majestic creature?!" It truly embodied everything that the games try to tell us is wrong with shadow pokemon without breaking genre conventions. This XD-001 the Edgehog monster is still clearly Lugia, it's still a pokemon, but damn if it doesn't look like it'll beat you up and steal your freight ship.
I'll always associate that line with Team Fourstar's nuzlocke of Souj Silver. They absolutely hated their starter so much...at first. By the end they loved that dumb dinosaur so much that one of them named his real dog after him.
Fun fact, Marill was meant to be the new mascot instead of Pikachu, as they wanted a new one every generation, but Pikachu became super duper popular, so the electric rat stayed.
6:04 this is something that I notice and appreciate. I'm incredibly afraid of centipedes, yet I like Centiskorch enough to have had it on Sword team (Scolipede is cool too). Im really impressed that Game Freak was able to do something like that
If they'd just kept the spacing between Skarmory's blade like wings and kept the red color of the lower wings the design could look really good in 3D I think.
I am excited for Gen 3 of these, because it has the first generation I played as a kid, and the generation with many of my favourite pokemon, including my absolute favourite Grovyle
Hoppip is cat-like because its Japanese name is sort of a pun: Hanekko, probably inspired from the word for jumping (haneru), and roots (nekko). Incidentally neko is also the word for cat.
TBSkyen idk if this will be seen by anyone but the design of Azumarill actually has to do with the moon believe it or not. Both eggs and rabbits are connected to the moon in Japanese culture. Specifically the fairy type seems to be based in being this sort of ethereal type of being connected to the moon. If you look at all of the previous gen Pokémon that got fairy upgrades, they tend to be either egg or moon associated (azumarill, clefairy, Togekiss). From my research this may be the connection between and the core themes of these Pokémon’s designs. Azumarill specifically is basically confirmed to be a sort of moon bunny (it gets the ability huge power, which essentially works as a deep-cut pun on the concept of rabbits making mochi on the moon, which is a popular Japanese legend), so it is quite likely that the egg theming is actually moon symbolism. This is probably also the case with the Togepi line. Basically: rabbits, eggs, fairies= weird mystical/supernatural beings from the moon
I'm surprisd you didn’t bring up the fact that Granbull is definitely taking a page out of the stereotypical bully look. Which makes sense as its a bull dog. I’ve been thinking about this for years… In regard to Delibird, I wonder if it was originally supposed to be pronounced “Deh-lih-bird” (like Delivered), instead of “Deh-Lee-bird”. But once the anime verbalized it, “Deh-lee-bird” stuck, but I awkwardly, hauntingly wonder in the shower if we should be saying “deh-lih-bird” this whole time. 🤣🤣🤣
