11 years on and this video is still blowing many of the newer tutorials out of the water. Thanks for this - grateful to learn something new about Massive!
How is this man gonna drop such a good and informative guide on Drum Synthesis in Massive and then disappear from the face of youtube T-T IF YOU'RE STILL ALIVE DELTADEEP, THIS WAS A GREAT VIDEO (y)
I am alive :). I thought this video was the start of an ongoing tutorial video project but my career turned out to take my full attention and I stopped. I still hope to resume doing these vids. For instance, I know I could do a pretty compelling snare tutorial but these things are really time consuming - they take preparation/planning, developing the presets, editing the video. But fingers crossed I'll get to it at some point. In the meantime, have hope as I am still, indeed, alive.
LOL BRUH THAT RESPONSE 1 YEAR LATER HAHA. Respect man, after a year of learning to produce I remember this one really helping me a lot. Thanks again, I hope you get more time to do more tutorials
This is definetley 10/10 for me. Ive been scared to approach drum synthesis until now and ive already came up with a good result after watching this tutorial. You my friend are a genius. Well done
This is without a doubt the first tutorial I've seen that taught me anything I didn't already know and provided an insight as to how massive works. Definitely need more tutorials of this caliber
Dude, you've really got it down. This is by far the most comprehensive video on Massive I've seen. Great stuff. I'm going to read your blog after the tutorial. I like to learn what everything in Massive means, and when someone just says put this knob here, and click that, and don't add much depth or explanation to their tutorials you're not really learning anything other than the location of a few knobs that you don't comprehend.
My intent with this video was to teach the technique and provide a framework so that people can run with it. I am glad it's working. The presets and exact kicks I'm getting are arbitrary and I'm expecting everyone to go and make their own kick banks tailored to their styles. No way to do that if you don't understand what's actually going on :). In hindsight I think the negative modulation thing was overcomplicated and I could do an updated version without that which would be shorter and more accessible.
One of the best all around tutorials I have ever seen. Not only do you show us how YOU created the sounds, but you explain to us why it is changing how it is and makes me ACTUALLY understand how Massive works. Thank you very much.
I'm glad your career took off, but I have to say that I do keep coming back to this video again and again over the years because there is always something more I can get from it. I'm sure there is a wealth of other techniques and knowledge you could drop that would blow our minds. No matter, you do what you've got to do.
i must say this is one of the most clearly tutorials i have come across in the whole time i have been producing music. you are so clear and pay attention to detail. i truly appreciate a person who knows what they are talking about. thank you soo much. im subscribing for future videos. keep them up
Brooo! u're my hero, i've struggling with the kicks for a while, not even Bazzism2 gave me the sound that i wanted, the result with massive are amazing, thanks a lot!
just getting into Massive / sound design in general, videos like this really help it click into place, so big thanks, great video. Will be checking your blog frequently
Mate this tutorial was amazing you should really consider posting more You have really changed the way I produce, not just with kicks or with using massive either So thank you so much
I suggest for the kick with the Bender wavetable, put the 1st mod envelope to -48 and the 2nd mod envelope to -36. It makes every just sound so much better. Great tutorial! I've been searching all over for this and finally I found it! Keep it up :)
Whether or not there are a few differences in methodology or creation is irrelevant. This was one of the better tutorials I've found on kick drums. I'm sure there are vids explaining more of the WHY it happens but This one gave me the basics on the direction I'd like to go and as you said, will have me reaching for mine 1st!! Major props and thanx!! Subbed, Liked :)
Brilliant, made no sense to me when i first i first got massive and watched this but after getting to no it and revisiting this video this has opened lots of doors, you put everything across very clearly, looking forward to making my own kicks......
Holy hell, I love you. Seriously, I learned more about massive in this 20 minute video than I did from a few weeks of groaning at "yo skrilz drop it hard bass tutorial leet haxorz" videos. You rule, dude, thank you so much for this!
Thanks so much for this, you're the 1st person I've seen use Massive to make kicks like that and its an awesome method. NOW HOW ABOUT THAT SNARE TUTORIAL WE'RE ALL WAITING FOR ????!! =)
I've used similar technique to make kicks. I do the bass with one osc and mid and hi-kick sound with the other two. Then put bass on filter 1 and the others on filter 2. I then apply some feedback to filter 2 to make them more punchy for mids. After that I mix the filters so bass is at very low volume and apply distortion so the bass will get as less distorted as possible. It's also good to use delay on filter 2 with INSERT effects.
That's a real good info / explanation of how and why and so on... Still trying to understand why you are using two envelopes for the pitch bending of the oscillator instead of just one...
One envelope is fast and responsible for the downward chirpy/snapping attack, the other is slower which creates the downward sweep in the subs that makes for the "oomph." You could do it with one envelope, it would just be harder to control the balance of chirp/oomph
Great video, thanks. I build hardcore kicks using ableton's analog - I like it's simplicity so had never really got to grips with massive as I couldn't work out how to sort out the amp/pitch envelopes. Will definitely be giving it a go now
Are you sure it is white noise you are thinking of? White noise is often used in snares but not usually kicks. However Hi-hats are often layered over kicks so maybe you should try that.
Ι dont know if you get to see this after all that time but first of all thanks so much for your great tut!, and I wanted to ask you if you ever rout a second oscillator for the sub bass (a simple sinewave maybe) or a higher one as a layer (like a rim) or do you think that stacking oscillators can make the kick "too full?" And one more question that just came up, do you ever work the reverse way regarding the pitch modulation? (starting with a low pitched osc and use the envelope for pitch slide to the upper harmonics)
Okay, cool, I'll be glad to watch the tutorial if you do it. Maybe learn a new trick/tip too :D I don't understand what kind of hiss you mean though. I just now had a look at your profile. I have a quick question, would a synthesizer keyboard be worth getting? Like, I've used a default PC keyboard to play random melodies but I always play the notes off sync and you seem to play the piano real smooth. So would it be that much better on a synthesizer/piano?
LOVE THIS! I am stoked to use my own kicks! any recommendations on creating a snare? I am have been messing around with using modulated noise on top of the kicks. any thoughts?
You could just use white/bright noise with massive and apply on a very low volume with kick, so it's kind of barely noticeable for a normal listener's ear. Also use (very) fast decay. I usually use noise because it's too plain/electronic sounding without it (when I use studio headphones). You can also use metallic or hi-metallic on Massive with noise to get a hat effect for kicks. I used that technique to make nice simple hi-hats but noise should be at low volume so it won't sound too noisy.
That's glorious sonic enlightenment. One question though. When I release the key it goes back up to high pitch chirp. Is there a way to eliminate that such that I don't have to bounce the sound before using it? Would be great to fiddle the params in the DAW instead of bouncing it first with the key held down. I tried messing with the release on both envelopes, but there is always an artifact of some sort on key release.
A few people have asked this and I've provided answers above in their questions. Basically you use the speed of the performer to set the desired duration of your kick and hold your midi note longer, all the way thru it, don't release it until the kick is silent.
Hey TheDeltaDeep, thanks for sharing your kicking wisdom! You also promised us to show how to get rid of the click at the end of the kick.... I'm increasingly desperate...
Yes, but that's only true if you click the "SC" and then you can sidechain the first (or second) slot. You have to click the dash underneath the box and it turns into an arrow indicating it has been activated as a sidechain. Otherwise they just work in concert

Isn't snare the same way as kick just tuned higher?
Respect. Much luck with your career brother.
omg please make more, ill pay for your course! lol
This tutorial has been one of the best I've ever seen. Keep it up, subscribing for more Massive tutorials!
No doubt the best kick tutorial ever. I didn't even think it was possible to make a decent kick in Massive before I saw this. Thank you.
This is definetley 10/10 for me. Ive been scared to approach drum synthesis until now and ive already came up with a good result after watching this tutorial. You my friend are a genius. Well done

Awesome tutorial, mate! I found that modulating the noise-generator made things a lot more interesting when trying to make my own kicks!
watching this in damn 2019, still a brilliant up-to-date tutorial, thank you!
outstanding synthesis tutorial. Extremely effective stuff. Thanks so much.

So thank you so much
Sebbu Kabir I have to agree. This is the best kick drum tutorial online. Its a shame there aren't more tutorials on this channel.
Dang man! Best kick drum tutorial out there BY FAR. I will definitely be referencing this again in the future! Thanks a lot.
I suggest for the kick with the Bender wavetable, put the 1st mod envelope to -48 and the 2nd mod envelope to -36. It makes every just sound so much better. Great tutorial! I've been searching all over for this and finally I found it! Keep it up :)

VERY good video. Thanks for the tips.
I never even considered using the performer to control Amplitude.
Such an amazing tutorial. Best I've seen on Massive. Keep it up man. Cheers.
WOW! This is just absolutely brilliant.
Massive tutorial mate!!!! !Thanks a lot,I've learnt a lot from it.waiting for more tutorials from you
Very excellent, what I would really like to see now is a similar NI Massive tutorial for Snares
This is awesome, why aren't there more tutorials as good as this?

awesome video...will you ever come back The Delta Deep?????????????????
Great video! Can you make a part 2 video that covers in depth filter options for these kicks?
I've used similar technique to make kicks.
I do the bass with one osc and mid and hi-kick sound with the other two. Then put bass on filter 1 and the others on filter 2. This is good info even in Vital days
Damned good tutorial!!! Awesome. Finaly the ultimative way to make my own kick drum sounds exactly how I want them. Many, many thanks :-)))

Best tutorial ever!! Thanks SO much!
Excellent video, thanks!
great tutorial man! i leaned new cool stuff about the massive
Excellent tutorial. I found this after watching kick synthesis for Zebra2 and it seems that Massive is much better at creating kicks.
Great video, thanks. I build hardcore kicks using ableton's analog - I like it's simplicity so had never really got to grips with massive as I couldn't work out how to sort out the amp/pitch envelopes. Will definitely be giving it a go now
HOW IS THIS VIDEO 3 YEARS OLD AND THERE ARE ONLY TWO VIDS ON THIS DUDES PAGE?! DID HE DIE? WE NEED MORE!!!
Are you sure it is white noise you are thinking of?
White noise is often used in snares but not usually kicks. However Hi-hats are often layered over kicks so maybe you should try that.
i really liked this tutorial very very clear and helpful thanks a lot

Subscribed! thanks so much for your tutorials, this is absolutely WONDERFUL
This tutorial is one of the greats srsly
Wow, you're the man. This is just so awesome.
Thanks.
Fantastic vid, any chance the presets could get rehosted? the site is down :(

Thank you times infinite!!
Thanks man this is what i was searching from last 3 weeks but i am disappointed because now 22,000 + peoples know this trick.
Great Video! Thank you very much!

thanks for sharing really enjoyed
Thank you sooooo much this helped me get the right sound!
great tutorial, looking forward to watch the tutorial about the snare drum :D
yes it is. for snare a sine wave and a the noise tab. same with cymbals claps and hats but with lots of adjustments
Really good tutorial. Thank you.
This was an awesome tutorial. How do you get rid of the chirp on the release?
So good tutorial! Love this one, really good explanation!! Thanks you :)

Big big one here! Helped so much! Liked and subscribed! :)
Thank you very much!
this is amazing!!
thanks dude. that hack changed everything. great tutorial!
Hey, great job! Could you please provide the .ksd file as well? I can't use the other format. Thanks man!
That was an excellent. Thank you.
this tutorial rules and i want to see how you do snares! i've messed around with creating some myself but i'd love to see what tricks you have
thanks man, taught me a bunch today!
Come one, continue this bro, make some videos, this was awesome.
This tutorial is pure gold!!!! Fuck using vengeance samples lol
Great video!
