What Happened To The Skulls?

  • Elite secret societies, handsome dudes, the end of the nineties, the beginning of the 2000s, and even Shooter McGavin chasing Pacey from Dawson’s Creek across campus to the sounds of Fatboy Slim. Today, we take a deep dive into a time capsule of a movie that is as maligned as it is beloved. A film that answers the question that no one ever thought to ask...what happens when you mix a serious thriller like John Grisham’s The Firm, that was so popular in the 90’s, with the hip world of emerging teen dramas and slashers? This is just What Happened to THE SKULLS.

SERIES SYNOPSIS: Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs. Either way, we have to ask: What Happened To This Horror Movie?

The fraternity that I joined was just a bunch of fun loving guys who loved college and were active in every area of college life. Unfortunately, I soon realized that others viewed not just us, but fraternities in general as bad... maybe as bad as the ones in the movie.

Outsider lookin in from australia i never got the allure of it in films joining a group of brothers who aren't ur brothers, and u dont get to choose your ride or die peeps, just seemed like a club for unlikeable higher income socially slow teens, who are far from home and scared of fitting in again after high school.

Re-watching this recently for the first time in 20 years, the thing that stood out most to me was the scene where Chloe shows Luke her AI-powered art machine. The questions it touched on about AI were so far ahead of its time. For instance:
In Chloe's dialogue, she questions whether she should be considered the artist for training and prompting the machine, or whether the machine the artist for producing the actual art, or is it both of them, is it neither?
I thought it was very clever dialogue for 2000, given the debates we're facing now with generative AI. But mostly it's just such a random scene to include in the context of this film's plot.
Also, the casting cross-over you mentioned with Varsity Blues is a great piece of trivia. Nice catch!

A decent franchise, worth spending some time with. The Skulls II always seemed the most passed over, but I liked it best -- and I can swear that its ending credits used to feature a cool song called Washed Away by the group The Tender Idols, but then that got swapped out for something else, and now the only trace left that I know of Washed Away being the closing song is my own memory. Now, THAT is spooky.

01:18 I always remember that part as one of the dumbest parts of the Skulls. Here we have an elite secret society that does all sorts of shit to keep their members secret…..but they brand their members with obvious marks in the most easily visible part of their body forcing them to constantly wear expensive watches to cover the brands! What happens when they take the watch off- everyone points at the wrist- SKULL! 😂
