What Happened To The Skeleton Key?

- With the world of folk horror very much at the forefront of my horror binging recently, I figured what better time to take a look back on a movie that has its roots in witchcraft and folklore, 2005’s The Skeleton Key, starring the very, not almost, famous Kate Hudson, and Peter Sarsgaard. It received very mixed reviews from what I recall, but time can often be kind to movies such as this one, so let’s find out if it’s an effective horror movie after all; here on What Happened To The Skeleton Key.

SERIES SYNOPSIS: Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs. Either way, we have to ask: What Happened To This Horror Movie?

I thought Skeleton Key was scary. It is very effective.
I dig the heck out of this movie that twist ending was how a twist should be
You weren't expecting it to happen like that.
@@RiVer-Parish yeah it got me I admit . But I called 6th Since lol
*Sense
RIP to the talented and beautiful Gina Rowlands and of course the incredible John Hurt.
They’re gone? 😭
@@susanstorm7910 Hurt passed away 7 years ago from pancreatic cancer & Gena died last month from complications due to the Alzheimer’s 😞
I had no idea she was dead... and so recently too! Certainly one of my favorite actresses
How’s it “almost 25 years old” if it came out in 2005? 😂 wouldn’t that be almost 20 years old?
Periodt
Well he said almost 25. If tiure going from 0 to 25 it is almost 25. It's weird to say though.
@@fletchbundy Well it’s not almost 25 is it? It’s almost 20, so not sure what your comments about.
That confused me lol
it is obvious he misspoke. let’s dispense with the fake dumb act.
One of my favorites! Not as a horror, but as a gothic thriller dripping with atmosphere and tension. Even better on the rewatch. Has me rooting for the “villains” every time.
This movie is underrated, its very original and the setting is phenomenal.. the final act to this day always makes me unsettled
Don't understand why this movie isn't more well regarded. The twist at the end is mind boggling and totally insane. What other movie has a premise like this. No one could guess the ending ahead of time. You have to look at every scene in the movie from a completely different perspective after the Finale. I think the events that transpire at the end shade people's opinion as well. Because everyone loves a happy ending and this ain't that. They tell her "its only real if you believe" but that's just one of many lies they tell her. It's real whether you believe or not. It's just much easier for them if you DON'T believe it's real. Diabolical. 👹
I totally agree with everything this guy is saying 👹👍
me too 🤘👹👍
I guess I do to
Get out
One of my favorite movies ever. It's a perfect representation of certain beliefs in Louisiana that still exist till this day.
Ever since td and yiu
@@garrettbot143Hollywood bullcrap, nepo baby playtime.
As someone who grew up on the central Gulf Coast and lives there to this day, I was immersed in hoodoo culture from a very young age. I think this movie did a good job of presenting hoodoo in as honest a light as would be entertaining for someone who wasn't really familiar with it. It may not have broken a lot of new ground, but I found it both entertaining and reasonably chilling.
I always liked this movie. I saw it in the theater. It’s one of the best PG-13 horror movies I can think of. Also, Get Out borrowed some ideas from this one.
Literally watched this last night before you guys posted this video this morning. LOL. Showed it to my wife the first time and she actually quite enjoyed it… I had seen it before and enjoyed it in the past, but upon watching it again, I find it a really interesting fun/thrilling film with a really cool twist.
Love it!!
I really enjoyed this movie and found it better than a lot of these critically acclaimed horror movies which aren't scary, thought provoking or intense.
I really liked Skeleton Key. I thought it was a good movie personally
Definitely worth a watch. I love the set, setting, and twist. Also, some of the things you called cliche were not so much back then. Shallow review.
I already knew this movie wasn't very successful, but I'm still surprised but how cold the reception was, I love this movie the plot twist catch me by surprise even when it has perfect sense, and you have all the clues from the beginning, but you can't read them correctly until you have the answer, which is how a twist should be, nothing force something that was there the entire time hiding at plain sight.
The motivation of the main character is grounded and perfectly plausible, her father dies alone due to both of them being angry at each other, now she works with just one patient instead of a hospital because that way she can dedicate her entire energy to take care better of that person, and out of guilt she has developed this sense of responsibility with her patients again has perfect sense, good acting, atmospheric, not a jump scare horror is more about build up and the plot twist at the end, which is perfect for me, I'm not much into jump scares but more in something that surprise me and catch me off guard
To me this movie really uses the Bayous and Louisiana in a super effective and creepy way.
I wouldn't call it a horror film per se. To me it is more a supernatural thriller.
That said, I think the film is really good and is underrated by many. My theory is that they labeled it as a horror back then and folks expectations were heightened due to that.
But ofc, not all films are for everyone (regardless how much Hollywood wants it to be so) and while I enjoyed the hell out of the film, I understand if some did not find it as entertaining as I did
underrated gem, great twist id love a sequel
It’s actually in my top 10 favorite horror movies. You didn’t really touch on thematic elements of the story, which is a key aspect of the movie. The idea immortality and loss are huge parts of the plot (the movie literally opens on a man dying while the camera glides over the Louisiana state tree, which is a symbol of immortality), and the art direction with even paintings on the wall tying into those ideas as well really elevates the film.
Gimme your top 10 list
@@navaneeth269 it’s always changing, but as of right now…
1. Scream
2. Poltergeist
3. Trick r Treat
4. Psycho
5. The Sixth Sense
6. The Skeleton Key
7. Black Swan
8. Misery
9. Sleepy Hollow
10. Wes Craven’s New Nightmare
I was just thinking about this movie the other day and thinking about how it never gets talked about. I remember liking it anyway.
the making protecting circle scene in the end freaks the goosebumps outta me. horrific action!
love this movie. i consider it as a gothic horror drama.
Love this movie. Made sure it's part of my collection for spooky season.
I thought it was a decent chiller & I like that they decided to explore voodoo and hoodoo to set up its mysteries. Kate Hudson does a good job as our lead and you feel bad for what ends up happening to her. Plus Gena Rowland and Sir John Hurt leave their own distinct impressions despite limited dialogue and screen time, may they both rest in peace
It's hilarious because in 2005 everything thought this was dull and mediocre, yet since 2005 we have seen so much worse (by that I mean duller and insultingly bad) movies that this looks like fine aged wine.
“ *Voodoo? Hoodoo. You do. Do what? Remind me of the babe* !”
As someone who likes supernatural horror and isnt into splatter films, i really liked skeleton key. Its very atmospheric. I also recognized a few things that i had researched, and wanst too overly touched on but done (like brick dust lines)
Pretty good movie tbh, and looking at these comments here it's the consensus.
Skeleton's key ending traumatized me..I loved it and thought it was very unique.
It’s a haunting ending & terrifying to think you’re trapped with no way to escape until death comes
This movie really has a creep factor when you realize who they are actually lynching.
I loved this when it it came out. I remember my ex and I watching it and what how impressed we both were. Sure, it had bits of that early 00s feel that I don't much care for now, but it wasn't overloaded with dumb teens and gave us a unique and innovative story. I need to revisit this one soon. I have seen it again since release, but it's probably been 8-10 years since I last watched it.
This one still spooks me out.
I gotta write a letter...now that song is in my head
what!! I showed someone How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days last night, and he asked what other Kate Hudson movies I liked, and I listed this one right as this video dropped. small world ♡
It's such a great movie. Hudson, Sarsgard, everyone in it were just sublime. Plus it had a badass sound track (even as a metal head I appreciated it). I love this series - a great chance to revisit gems.
I did not know what to expect when I first saw it, and call me naive, but I did not see the ending/twist coming. I liked it!
I love this movie. For me its like Angel Heart, i have to sit down and watch them on a lazy rainy day once a year.
How dare you! This is an American masterpiece!!
I re-watched this maybe 6 months ago. Very enjoyable. Love the New Orleans setting too. Also, speaking of Eggers, The Northman is one of my favorite newer movies.
Loves Skeleton Key! Remember seeing it in theaters
It was good and had a dark vibe. Loved the twist.
I've only seen it once (even though I own it on DVD 😅) but I found the twist at the end to be such an awful fate that this movie stuck with me for years! I remember it being very good 👍. Definitely need to rewatch.
Holy crap, I was just thinking of watching this movie, which I have in DVD. Also pulling the score from my vault composed by Edward Shearmur, to add to my iPod.
This movie was my JAM. Definitely in my top 10
This was a great movie. I am not a big fan of Kate Hudson but this was great
Loved this movie. Was reminded heavily of it when Get Out released
I really liked this movie and it's an interesting concept (not necessarily new but not common either).
I have never seen this move but one of the scariest movie was The Others. The plot twist was insane (In my Crazy Eddie voice).
I enjoyed the movie. Thought it was suspenseful. If it’s on TV, I’ll watch it.
The rare non romantic comedy from Hudson.
This movie is from 2005, man. Clearly it's almost 50 years old, not 25 as you repeatedly stated.
Stuck with me for years after I saw it
This movie screams fugg around and find out. I loved this movie
😂 "That sh-t isn't scary it's just lazy writing" [IMMEDIATELY inserts an ad with loud music] 😂😂😂😂
01:05 "it's crazy to think it's nearly 25 years old"
Yes, it is crazy to think 2005 is nearly 25 years ago 😂
I just saw a 20 year grad school reunion for my former classmates. I was like what the heeeeeeeel ? How did this happened?
There's a 1976 Dan Curtis movie called "Burnt Offerings" That My Big Brother took us to when Our Folks were out of town. Oliver Reed & Karen Black creeped me the f out. That was the movie that kept me wary of swimming (even though I loved it). In some ways, I think "Skeleton Key" is a better version of that movie. Although I haven't watched it in close to 20 years I do remember really being creeped out. Kate Hudson felt really natural to me in that role, in fact the cast is pretty stellar. All the film making basics are there. Acting, script, the camera work is very good.
This is a fantastic movie, and I've been a fan since I saw it in the theater. Although, I'm not sure how you get 25 years old from a film released in 2005 and reviewed 19 years later in 2024. And since I've already come to expect to disagree with your assessment on most of your reviews, it's no surprise that this one is no different. The cast, story and pace are exemplary with extra props to Gena Rowlands for her creepy Violet. To this day, I love her taunting accented call for "Caroline..." towards the end. And while you feel John Hurt was underused, his character is essentially mute with only struggled moments of movement and voice. It's how it was written. The twist at the end was far better than bigger movies like the overrated Sixth Sense. Plus, it introduces the term "Fiddlesticks" to a new generation!😆
Love this movie Hudson is always great though
Blimey. Ian Softley's filmography is all over the shop. It's an impressive variety of different genres.
I don't think I've seen this film since it was released.... Time for a rewatch.
You should remind everyone about the original 'Curse' movies (not the US Remakes). Japanease Horror at its finest. For gamers out there; I highly recommend 'Siren' and 'Silent Hill the Room' I was so close to visiting Japan at one point. I had experience with Motion Capture and in late 2015 I was in contact with Capcom about the facial likeness role of Leon for the Resident Evil 2 Remake. I failed to mention I also have a voice acting background, in the end I lost the part and I can't forgive myself for wasting such an opportunity to visit place that ispired 'Akira' and 'GitS'.
@@AnxMa I really wanna play the siren games but there’s no way my anxiety could handle it lol
I definitely think you are being a little too harsh on this movie. It is one of my favorites. You didn't get a lot of movies like this 20 years ago...and that ending...chef's kiss 😙🤌🏼
Great movie.
I love this movie
I remember liking the movie
I really think this is the unsung parent to the Get Out movie by Jordan Peele.
As good a twist as any Shyamalan movie.
Thank god there’s subtitles cause i can barely understand you bro🫠
Is that new outro music (in the video credits, not the final channel card/other vid links)? I don't believe I've heard it before.
I like it!
I love this movie ❤
Metallica & Slayer ?!?! You got me hooked 😂🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
I WAS JUST RANDOMLY THINKING OF MOVIE THE OTHER DAY🗝️🗝️🗝️🗝️
I have a personal Mandela effect about this. I vividly remember Jennifer Garner being the lead, not Kate Hudson.
I have not seen that movie in over 18 years!!
as soon as Ehren’s name came up, enough was said. he ruins majority of the films he’s attached to, Scream most notably.
Woah, woah, woah... that's not Kiefer sutherland!?
I enjoyed it. Not a classic by any stretch, but there's been worse.
Louisiana voodoo is not a religion really, it is syncretic with Catholicism. The orishas of Yoruba religion in Africa are seen as Catholic saints. Louisiana voodoo is Catholic, hoodoo is protestant and also exists outside of Louisiana like in the Mississippi Delta. It is referenced in early blues recordings. This is all very basic information that takes 30 seconds of reading
I liked it a lot
I divn't knows aboot yous, but I enjoyed the movie
Not gonna lie, I got some trouble with that “thick” accent
A bit underappreciated imo...
4 Brothers
That movie isn't 25 years old
Did he do the vodoo that you do
Wasn't bad. If done better could be a classic.
Who is this narrator..
A hater 😂
'Get Out' blatantly ripped off this good horror movie and put the races upside down. 'Skeleton Key' is a good, disturbing movie with a heart-wrenching ending ☹😢😱!
if you're getting that generic, they both ripped off body snatchers.
It's tropes you're noticing. And that's just how stories work.
Get out was dealing with class issues, fetishization, having a loved one be the one to betray you. Skeleton Key deals with immortality and loss, escaping death and how and why someone falls victim (like needing to believe in it to make it true)
@@CheziahKatt You've put it it beautifully and you've articulated the inherited storytelling of those movies exactly as it is . I was simply using an opportunity to remind everybody for ignoring how Get Out ripped off the movies and being the most overrated horror, and the most racist movie since the Birth of a Nation 😟. I don't know which version of the Body Snatchers you were referring to...1956 was purely political, it had no other transparent motif, but the 1978 was much more cinematic, diverse and with the themes you've mentioned.
@@CheziahKattBuddy writes the same comment anytime he sees someone mention get out lol fanboy.
I saw it at the time and tend to agree with the consensus at the time that it was a long walk around the block for not much. Get Out uses as a similar premise as does 1973's Nothing But The Night and both films are more successful than Skeleton Key.
It was plagiarized as Get Out
Absolutely , good point; a disgraceful, moreover racist plagiarism by Get Out!

I like the person that’s narrating this way better than the other guy I stopped listening because of that guy so I’m happy to hear somebody who is a better narrator
I enjoyed this one because the concept was effective…I wasn’t overly moved by Kate Hudson though (the performance was a bit flat in my view) but in terms of concept, it was good. Should a sequel or re-make be done? 🫤 that’s debatable
