    I, for one, thought they were fun new discoverable items. I don't think everything needs to "add" so much to a game that it upsets balance or becomes a new big money maker. I feel like it should be said that carrots and broccoli used to be added in in the old PPJA crops mods, and carrots grew in three days there, too. For free items, I think they're a good time investment.

    • @darknesswave100
      @darknesswave100 15 дней назад +102

      Yeah they're free so I don't see why people are so upset about them. Plus if you start a new game and find carrots early they're a fantastic energy source for early game. I usually use fish and salmonberries for that but now I'm hoping to find carrots. They give 3 times the energy as salmonberries do. That's insane

      I wouldnt be necessarily mad, but disappointed with adding pointless crops. Adding more stuff with no real use just isn't very interesting. That said, gold per day isnt everything.
      That said, i do think these do fill a niche. The Carrot is a really nice supplement early game.
      The powdermelon is a winder crop, which is awesome in and of itself.

    • @emurphy42

      For the first two weeks, anyway. Once salmonberries show up, it's easy to just run around and collect dozens of them, whereas carrot seeds feel rather more limited. But you'd be wasting more time eating them, they sell for less, and it takes a lot of time to even get to them. I dunno, I'd rather eat one carrot than 3 salmonberries. Also, an iridium salmonberry STILL gives less energy than a REGULAR carrot(and that's including the energy it takes to water one).

    • @jason2mate
      @jason2mate 11 дней назад

      @@jonp1952 "2 energy to water and give 75"
      a) you would need to water twice, and given the assumption here is generally early game, that is 4 energy.
      b) Watering isn't the only requirement, as you have to Hoe a place for the seed to go as well as hoeing the seeds out of the ground, removing even more of the value of this energy generation. (it's now 6.67-8 energy into 75)
      c) Comparing to Salmonberries is valid, but if we think of early game you also have to compare to Field Snacks and Fish as again using energy to farm isn't only comparable to one thing, i'd argue that Fishing is better for profit (potentially same energy cost, decent chunk of fish that are worth more), and Field Snacks is better because your generating more useful items (Wood)
      Carrot's definitely aren't useless, but i don't think they are good compared to the other things you can use your energy on

    I haven't watched the video yet so I'll add my preemptive two cents: the powdermelons are a much more pleasant way to keep fertilized fields going over winter instead of just using fiber seeds, plus the giant crop version is beautiful!! i plant them all winter and use them to fill up my dehydrators whenever i dont have anything better to put in them. I don't do much with the summer squash and broccoli beyond just pickling for fun. The carrots though? That's a god-tier crop. With agriculturist and deluxe speed gro, they only take one day, which is awesome. I use them in my greenhouse or ginger island whenever I don't know what to plant. They've become my endgame food source too. Whenever I harvest them, I keep all the gold quality ones in my inventory to eat, turn the regular ones back into seeds and hang on to the silver ones. People always recommend using gold quality cheese on skull caverns runs but I'd much rather eat a 52 gold item than a 483 gold item just for some health. I find most of the cheese healing just gets wasted by overflowing anyway. Plus, it's way more fun to feed my horse a carrot when I'm eating them as well- it feels like sharing my snack with a friend :3

    I think something worth pointing out is that, once you're getting into winter of years one and two, you've probably gotten to a point where you're starting to chop down a lot of trees for wood to make new farm buildings, and of course kegs. So if you have done that in the Mountains, on the Back Path to the Mountains, or even in Cindersap, most of all those trees are going to be giving you pinecones. This means that of all the seeds you'll have to trade, powdermelons will be the most plentiful, and something you can have prepared before the winter forageable seeds. (In my case I had a couple hundred powdermelon seeds, because I was compulsively planting and re-harvesting pine cones as a tree-farm in the desert, so that I'd have a good amount of wood to get myself started.)

    Winter forageables (except crocus and holly, but holly doesn't come from seeds) can be put into preserve jars and kegs as of 1.6, and crystal fruit can be put into the dehydrator. Also having a 250% on seeds is better in my mind than the 200% from seed maker. Or you can seed maker the winter roots and sell the rest. I love the new crops, but never underestimate winter forage.

    EDIT: Ignore my comment, I forgot how speed-gro behaves
    I've got a counter-point about those carrots and the issue is the Deluxe speed-gro. Deluxe speed-gro at Pierre's is 150g. Oasis on thursday it's 80g. So with those options you've already spent way more than the carrot will give.
    Crafting them is effectively free, but you'd be spending a decent chunk of time gathering bone fragments and pine resin. Bone Mill has a similar problem, and you aren't guaranteed to get Deluxe speed grow anyway.
    The odds you'd be able to buy it straight from the desert festival is dismal but doable, but even then they'd only be available when the desert festival is going on anyway.
    I submit that unless you already have a pine-tapper farm setup (remembering that bone nodes are daily only, and farming skeles requires time fighting them), while *technically* carrots can pull more money than starfruit, feasibly it's moot.
    Unless you farm Hyper Speed-gro from Qi

  • @Quintingent

    *Points to comment*
    Look mum, I'm on TV!
    Great video as always! I do still stand by what I said - the role of 'free seeds you can find out and about' was already filled by mixed seeds, so the wild crops are kinda pointless in that regard, but it's nice to see the niches that they can provide as 'more reliable' freebies.
    For fun, here's the calcs for base profit/day of mixed seeds:
    Spring: (175/12 (cauliflower) + 1.25 x 80/6 (potato, accounting for extra potatoes) + 2 x 35/4 (parsnip, which is twice as likely))/4 = 12.19g/day
    Summer: (11 x 50/54 (corn grown on 1st Summer) + 8 x 40/26 (hot pepper grown on 1st) + 90/6 (radish) + 25/4 (wheat))/4 = 10.93g/day
    Fall: (160/8 (artichoke) + 4 x 50/26 (corn grown on 1st Fall) + 5 x 60/25 (eggplant grown on 1st) + 320/13 (pumpkin))/4 = 16.08g/day
    Bonus Ginger Island! (note that regrow crops don't die): (3 x 50/4 (blueberries) + 250/12 (melon) + 300/7 (pineapple) + 220/13 (rhubarb))/4 = 29.53g/day
    I could try and spin it as 'oh the spring and fall ones are actually more profitable than the wild crops' but let's be honest: just plant any freebies you get, at least in Y1, wild or mixed. They're FREE. (Later years you may want to hold onto mixed seeds for Fiber Seeds).

    I think that one place that these items really shine is with the new buff to preserved products that makes it so that you get both health & energy from jellies and pickles. For fruits, using a preserve jar is a flat doubling of its base health & energy, which means the only time you're losing out on energy is when you're preserving iridium quality crops. It's a similar story for vegetables, but there you lose out at gold quality instead. Pickled carrots give around 130 energy per jar, making it probably the best energy source you can get for spring year 2.

    • @Aderon
      @Aderon 13 дней назад

      @@orionweiss5418 It is possible to have the resources to never run out of energy left over from year 1. It's just that if you're going on a mining expedition, and every slot matters, pickled carrots are a great option that's quick to grow and just 3 is enough to almost completely restore your energy from next to empty to what it's likely to be capped at for the start of year 2. Sure you could just eat whatever you have lying around, but when inventory slots matter or you don't feel like eating a half-dozen items to get back to full, pickled carrots are a very convenient option.
      I mean they're not gonna beat iridium magma caps, but they're certainly no slouch either.
