Cameron gets an F for failure. Because he did NOT deserve to beat Ash in Unova, regardless of Ash’s lack of a brain at the time. But Morrison is one of the better rivals. I think he’s extremely underrated, and a victim to a lack of screen time. Morrison should’ve been introduced way earlier on. It made no sense for May to be the only one with rivals at the time.

Playing Pokemon X again currently, Serena's character was the child of Veteran Trainers and a couple of times was actually tired of losing to the player. I thought (on first playthrough) that she would join Team Flare to beat you. Would have been interesting to see.
If Ritchie was Ash minus his negative traits, I'd say Cameron was Ash with his negative traits doubled.

i mean he was the only rival who got to be involved in more than one series of the show. imagine if paul had gotten an additional 3-4 seasons.
@@Dracon350 Hm, well, as far as I remember, he appeared in 1 episode of Advanced series and maybe 3 episodes of Diamond and Pearl series (Kanto-Orange-Johto all count as the same series), so it's not all THAT impressive.
@@catxborsuq1 But, outside of the Team Galactic Arc, Gary was a major character for all of those episodes, and was still involved in taking out Hunter J, so Gary was never sidelined.

I just realized something about Sawyer. He's Trip done right. A newbie trainer who is a rival to an experienced Ash. But, Sawyer only wins one battle, and is based on him admiring Ash so much he analyzed all of Ash's Pokemon carefully. Sawyer also had a personality and a much more compelling reason for a rivalry. Trip hated people from Kanto, but Sawyer admired Ash and saw him as "the" person to beat.
Barry should've been at least an A as he was the only person to actually almost always interrupt team rockets motto it was great not having to hear the same thing over and over again

Sawyer is probably the most underrated character in the series. His team was great (With Clawitzer, Salamence and Sceptile) And his relationship with Ash was just really great to watch. He's a friendly rival done right. The game developers really need to take down notes, even though Hop was a good rival
Some of Ash’s rivals became his friends too, like Barry, Tierno, Trevor, Sawyer, Alain, Gladion and even Bea.

i remember how much i hated that guy, always trying to be much better than ash and even making fun of him whenever he has the chance. I even remember how satisfying it was when giovanni defeated him, but it was also an interesting way to slowly make gary realize that he isn't perfect, and little by little he started to become less mean and more humble. And it makes me proud of him in how far he has come in becoming a pokemon researcher ^^
Ritchie
I'll admit, as a kid i hated that Ritchie won against ash in the league but i also still remember that after the next ep where ash was depressed cuz of his loss, ritchie gives him a very important lesson that winning isn't everything and i did felt something about what he said. (As a kid, i was always angry whenever i lost any game) and his words were something that helped me learn about accepting defeat and learn from mistakes. So yea, he is one of my favorite rivals.

I thought he was pretty cool, i still remember how freaked out yet so excited i got when i saw his blaziken being introduced during the johto season, it got me so excited for gen 3 XD
Morrison
He may not be one of the best rivals but i think he was kinda ok. I mostly loved the ep where he had so many doubts in battling against ash in the league, but ash gave him the motivation to battle, showing him that battles is about having fun with other trainers, no matter if the results come out as winning or losing.
Tyson
I really like this guy, and i also love his badass meowth, which i honestly feel so bad for. His poor meowth developed a huge hatred against all persians because a persian brutally beat him, which caused him to hate all persians in general. even team rocket's meowth showed a lot of support for tyson's meowth. I still remember how freaking out i got when tyson's meowth not only defeated a persian in the pokemon league but it also wanted to freaking MURDER it!! Glad that tyson quickly got it back in it's pokeball before things got messy 😨
Paul
Ugh........ i know many people love paul, but I'm honestly not fond with him. In a nutshell, paul is a freaking pokemon abuser. He never sees pokemon as friends, he only sees pokemon as tools of power. And not only he mentally abused chimchar but he also abandoned him for being "weak and pathetic", which makes me glad that ash decided to make chimchar part of his team, which is why ash defeating paul with infernape was one of the most satisfying victories for ash. And it was also the perfect way for infernape to get payback against paul. Also paul getting easily defeated by cynthia and the pyramid king are also my favorite battles from the sinnoh series, just seeing paul getting owned by not just the pyramid king but also defeated by the sinnoh champion was just awesome 😂
But yea, paul is just freaking unlikable to me, yea i know that maybe he does change a bit after his defeat against ash, but i am still not that fond of him.

Ok, i may not like paul, but i will admit that paul is way better than trip. Trip was a jerk but in a very annoying unlikable way, and i don't mean in gary oak style, trip was just... intolerable. Gary made a way better job in being a jerk than trip.

She is totally ok, but i kinda always found it freaking annoying that whenever she appeared, she comes running while repeatedly saying "get out of the way! Get out of the way! Get out of the way!" While always accidentally pushing ash... like... girl why are you even running in the first place with your eyes closed??? You can just walk! -________-

Yes yes yes!! This guy is amazing! And i love in how much he cares for his pokemon, and shows how strong he is with his charizard. And of course, some people are still mad that he won the league... but i honestly had no problem with that at all, i liked how the league concluded, and second place for ash was ok to me too. His rivalry with ash was just awesome! 👍

Yes! I love gladion! He is the total opposite of paul. He may look like the typical horrible careless trainer like paul, but unlike paul, gladion shows so much care for pokemon, he sees them as his friends and his rivalry with ash was so good. And his relationship with lillie is just so sweet.

What's even better is when we get to see a rivalry between two Pokemon, like the one between Ash's Chimchar and Paul's Electabuzz. I like how in the lake acuity battle, when Monferno is sent out, you can see Electabuzz smiling upon noticing that this Pokemon has evolved from the Chimchar he knows and has battled against. Plus, their battle in the Sinnoh league, when they are both fully evolved and at their best is nothing short of legendary. This just goes to show how Ash and Paul's rivalry is... well, unrivaled.

Personally I would have put Nando in B-tier. He was pretty unique in that he was basically on his own double journey with two passions which also resulted in him being a rival to two main protagonist at the same time.

Also can we also mention the inconsistency with Gary, at the beginning of both the dub and sub he says to Ash “you must be Ash.” When someone says “you must be” that implies you just met them, or you heard about them but don’t really know them yet, but then they try to spin it like they have known each other before that in Johto, talk about inconsistency.

Yes he's a cruel jersey when we first meet him but throughout Sinnoh we see more and more of what made him this way while also seeing changes in him. His final battle with Ash is also arguably one of the best battles in the whole series.

I think Clermont should've been a rival due to his determination to be like ash after saving professor sycamore's garchomp. And the fact that after ash's battle against Ramos, he literally left the group for a little bit to train himself for ash's gym battle with him. Also at the end of the series they had a significant battle to make up for the battle in the beginning of the series that was interrupted by team rocket

Hau wasn't really a bad rival. He isn't a boring game character and he isn't a boring anime character either. Like in the games (more so the ultra games) he proves to be a pretty strong and competent trainer. They felt the need to introduce him since he was a rival in the games too.

Alain wasnt a good rival, but i dont know if your rank is bc of their relationship with Ash or their own character. He was forced into the league despite having other aims, and his relationship with ash was superficial

S tier Paul, Gladion, Sawyer
A tier Trip, Stephan and Alain
B tier Barry, Cameron, and Morrison, Nando, Conway
C tier Hau, and the guy with the Meowth that looked like puss in boots, and the guy with blaziken in johto, Tobius
D tier Ritchie and Gary
Ritchie is there because they brought him back in Johto for no reason, and missed the opportunity for Ash to rematch him in the Johto league, and Gary is here because they butchered the classic red vs blue rivalry, doing nothing with there rivalry in kanto and at first I thought they would put a twist on it in Johto since there first battle at the end of the orange islands is a reference to Pokémon Yellow, but nope, nothing happens. The rivalry script was right there in the games and had its own potential but they did nothing with it, one of the many reasons why the original series is my least favorite and why I consider it garbage.
I definitely agree with the Gary vs Ash rivalry. I was hoping (cause of the games) for them to battle several times throughout the original series. I was so disappointed when they didn't.

Ash took 6 generations to get to the semifinals of a pokemon league while none of his other rivals (except Alain) ever made it to top 4, while Sawyer did it on his first, he's also the only rival who started his journey after ash but still overpowered him if it wasn't for the b's supersaiyan Greninja form,
If there was a Pokémon tournament with all of ash's rivals, Sawyer would beat everyone except Alain. It's just that kalos is the only time ash ever made a powerful team

yeah he's not more villain than team rocket. Yes they treated their pokemon better than he did but he wasn't trying to steal other pokemon and trying to take over the world.

To me Sawyer was the best rival. His focus was solely on Ash. He spent his time learning and analyzing Ash and his personal battling style. XY is also where Ash came into his own as a character for the first time because we learned what made him special, his abstract battling style, and Sawyer noticed this and emphasized upon it the entire series. Sawyers existence, although nerdy and uncool, allowed us to learn more about our boy Ash and even caused our boy to grow in character development. I think that's something a lot of rivals didn't bring out in Ash, even Paul, as Ash was a consistent unwavering character in his beliefs against Paul in that series.
first time? ash has always been his own character. the entire D&P series were all about his abstract battle ideas from counter-shield to that weird spin move. hell, he had infernape use flare blitz underground to get rid of toxic spikes. he had staraptor close combat the ground to get out from under a gastrodon. his grotle literally _ATE_ an energy ball to power up somehow.
even before D&P we had classic battles such as when snorlax uses a hyper beam to fly, or, and as stupid as it was, when pikachu shocked himself and swellow to give them 'thunder armor'. abstract battling has always been a very prominent part of ash's character.
Paul didn't change what Ash believed in, but he challenged those beliefs just by existing.
Ash himself has never really changed in terms of character ever since Johto. prior to hoenn, Ash was still a bit clumsy, had some doubts, and overall just seem inexperienced. post-johto Ash is a whole lot more confident in his abilities and seems to know the ins and outs of battling so long as it's not the beginning of the series.
the only thing that changes nowadays is Ash's knowledge in battles. sometimes he knows exactly what he's doing and yet at other times he'll tell pikachu to thunderbolt a ground type and go, "WUH!?"
Sawyer just admires ash rivalry means best opponents and enemies in battles not friendship or coping battling style
