Sawyer's mistake was that he tried to study Ash's strategy. What he didn't know was that Ash doesn't battle based on strategies created before the match. He comes up with them during the match which make it more unpredictable for his opponents.
Exactly stuff like underground flare blitz, rock tomb jump, aerial stone edge, burning the battlefield and thunder armor (as bs as that last one is but still)

Gary and Drew were the jerk rivals that had the skills and knowledge to back up their arrogance.
Harley was super petty, but was entertaining and cared for his Pokemon. Jessie's Sinnoh and Kalos aliases were more proof that she and James need to stop being evil.
The only redeeming factor about Cameron is his Lucario having a different personality than any other Lucario we've seen. Everything else, I see why.
Yeah his lucario had a fun personality , other than that I gotta say Cameron is pretty much trash , I don't really hate him or any character tho but yeah he's one of the worst

Nini technically had pokemon with personality as well. I still remember how funny it was when her Gothita fell in love with Pancham so Nini tried to convince Serena for a trade and Farfetch´d realized that by process of elimination he was the one getting traded.

@@giboit. yeah true , I think Nini was just a joke like she wasn't even a challenge for Serena , but the thing with Cameron is that the dude was dumb , kind of annoying and also defeated Ash which made everything about him more infuriating

5.) Honestly, what’s the point of bringing Solidad, she was an interesting character at first until she pulled off an off-screen victory against May in which I am personally not a big fan of. 😖
4. Trevor was a major disappointment and mind you that he was treated the worst out of the Kalos anime. Mega Charizard Y was cool to see but what cost ?
Even Tierno was decently more interesting than him.
3) Realistically, Jesselie is nothing but a “joke” rival, only performance was legitimately good was her last one in the Master class but otherwise, I really don’t care about this incarnation of her.
2). Speaking of major disappointments, don’t get me started with Cameron and the battle was “interesting” but not in a good way.
Five against six and still beating Ash was atrocious and humiliating.
Arguably one of my least favorite rivals.
1.) Realistically, Nini was a massive letdown, she barely showed up since her debut and when Nini does show up, she’s very annoying to some extent.
Her performances are okay but otherwise, no thank you !!! 😴
The entire DP anime was Pokemon done right. They all had some form of growth and while they all had their moments, none of the characters got too overly annoying aside from Barry.

OMG YES! I was super annoyed that they bothered to give Ash & Casey such interactions (More than even official rivals like Morrison) yet didn't include her in the Johto League. Imagine Casey competing in an actual stadium, that would be so perfect!
Yeah, I feel the same way as she is my favorite rival personality wise
it was supposed to be realistic version of how not all trainers are eligible to get all 8 badges. Just like how two other Kanto trainers never got 8 badges and we never knew who they were
I think both those examples just show that going for "realistic" if you want to try to call this that makes a worse story sometimes XD
Cause yeah, why have Ash take on an established rival like Casey or something when clearly some random one offs like Salvador are much better for the story /s

Paul made drapion my 9th favorite pokemon. It's so strong under his care.
I think he made me have a love hate relationship with it. It was a damn good challenge for Ash's team with it's bulkiness, durability and Toxic Spikes but I kinda felt bad for Ash's team getting mauled. F in the chat for Staraptor.

Zoey in my opinion is really underrated I love how she's more of a friendly rival and supportive and her learning from Dawn and Ash gave her a lot of development. She has a good personality and gives really good advice shows how good of a friend she is and is amazing coordinator I will always love and appreciate Zoey more than people will know
I agree. I think it was really interesting that even tho she was dawns rival, she wasn’t afraid to help her get better. At the start zoey was almost more of a mentor then shifted into her biggest rival. She always showed up when dawn needed support. And maybe zoey knew that helping dawn become better would make herself better. Like the whole “the best player is only as good as the 2nd best player since without a good 2nd player the best player wouldn’t have anyone to push them to keep improving”. I wonder if zoey had thought of that or really was just being a great friend? Either way I loved their promise when they first meet to battle in the finals of the grand festival and then they actually do it

Zoey was actually the first Rival that I actually liked (as well as the only one that I enjoyed during her run). She excelled at being competent opponent and a sweetheart at the same time.
The only annoying thing about her is when she keeps calling Candice Miss Senior
If anyone was gonna beat Dawn in the Grand Festival, I'm honestly glad it was her.
Honestly sawyer will always be my favourite rival because I liked how he wasn’t a jerk to ash like most rivals and he got good development throughout the anime and the battle he had with ash in the league was amazing in my opinion.And honestly I was pissed when we didn’t see more contests with Jessilee cause we saw that jesse isn’t just about catching pikachu and that she found something she’s actually good at and enjoys honestly I would have loved that if she decide to focus more on doing contests instead of *catching an overgrown yellow rat.*

FINALLY!!! Someone talks about how amazing of a rival Drew is! I never see him talked about when people think of the best rivals since they tend to default to Ash’s rivals, which is such a shame as I genuinely think he’s just below Paul in terms of being the best and is Gary Oak perfected for May. Thanks Zack for giving the boy justice!
Ngl drew grew on me..when Harley came in. I used to think drew was annoying, but compared to Harley he might as well be a supportive rival
I remember when May finally beat Drew, I felt an Ash vs. Gary battle in contest form due to how close the match was. I was watching from the edge of my seat during that fight.
@@graciegonzales2077 I'm so happy drew got what thee treatment he desrved because people just overlook him like well ZOey but Dawn n the finals and Drew lost in Semi I think but first offf he won against MAy in Hoen so theres that also he helps MAy grow and I think this is perefect for him because he actually pushes GIrl lead charcter and they have there relatship as well which wasn't to heavely pushed on which I like because it was more like a nice rlathsip for finals and also Drew gets his revenge against May also after the kanto grant festival so he does beat May so he is not worst than ZOe but probably is better than Zoe honetly in my opion but yeah I'm os glad Drew got a 10 becasue that is what he truly desreves and is th emost underatted rival in my opion

I loved Miette, Alain and Paul as well my favorite rivals after Drew
Kiawe is one of my favourite rivals due to the fact that he spent the series alongside ash meaning that his dynamic as a rival seemed much more friendly than others, probably one of the best ways to handle the friendly rival trope the newer games go for

Honestly sawyer is such an underrated rival. He starts off as a big fan of Ash and uses him as inspiration to get to his level which really shows as the season progresses with him at the end being essentially an equal in battling style to Ash
The only part I didn’t like was how quick(rushed) his development felt.

Thing with Paul (and Serena) is that they had a perfect ending to their character arc, so bringing them back could go against said development.

Unlikely. Goh's trying to catch Pokemon, not battle Trainers. Paul would have absolutely nothing to offer Goh and would therefore be wasted on anything that has nothing to do with Ash.
"Hau got done so dirty, man" I felt that so hard. All of SM I was eagerly awaiting for Hau to appear since Lillie and Gladion got introduced so early on, and then they finally introduced him and he was just. Discount Sawyer. He wasn't a BAD rival or anything, but he completely lacked all the qualities that made game!Hau an interesting, unique rival. Rewatching all the episodes with him a few months back, he honestly felt more like an adaptation of Hop than an adaptation of Hau (who, despite having similar character arcs, have VERY different personalities/attitudes, especially when it comes to Pokémon battling).
Yeah, and it all comes to a head in his final match of the Alola League. Now I don't hate the battle between god Rowlet and Decidueye (I actually liked it) but from Hau's perspective it hurts. Your own blood calling out your win only to lose right after just hurts to look at. I know Hala's coming from a good place. He doesn't want Hau to get off easy and he's seen Rowlet's shenanigans beforehand so he knows it's probably not over, but man it doesn't feel great watching Hau just ball in his grampa's shirt. One of my favourite rivals came late in the anime only to then just get slapped.

My personal favourite is gladion. I like how he starts a shady powerful dude, but becomes a great rival to ash.
Huh. I know they didn't really develop rivals for the companions until Hoenn, but Brock never got a rival. Even Misty had a little rivalry with Ash on occasion, but otherwise she didn't really have one either.
Yea it's hard for someone to be a rival to a pokemon breeder/doctor unless some goes out of their way to show how inferior Brock is as a doctor that it will feel unnatural misty the same boat as there not much of her goal of being a great water Pokemon trainer unless you have someone who only runs a single type also and say how inferior misty water Pokemon is compare to them again it would feel too unnatural

I love all his battles vs ash and also the way how he battled against ash in kalos league,it showed how far he came admiring ash.
Paul has to be number 1 no one can replace him,he is the best example of how rival should be.

Nini is when a writer creates a character, loves them, realizes they don't fit in the story, but try to make it work anyway.

Yay Drew got perfect score! My favourites would be Drew, Zoey, Paul, Alain and Gary.
Drew is like Gary but over the course of the series he tones down and starts to respect and care for May, and of course he had insecurities because May was suddenly going to beat him, and then he yelled at her. And the wordless nod he gave to her when she did beat him finally was so amazing. Also contestshipping is still my fav ship since childhood. Even in the Japanese version, Drew used to call May with the 'kun' honorific until the Mirage Island episode where he spends time and sees that she's a totally different person outside of contests, and he drops the honorific afterwards from there.
Zoey is an underrated rival, she's friendly and offers advice and stands up if her friends are being mistreated like towards Paul. She looked down on Ash and Nando for competing in contests but afterwards she learnt from them that battles are equally as important to become the top, and apologises. I was disappointed Dawn lost but Zoey's victory was truly earned.
I love it whenever Drew and Zoey become extra party members to Ash and co. in some episodes, like the Mirage Island or Mulberry Contest episodes for Drew or the Snowpoint, Wallace Cup and Grand Festival arcs for Zoey who stuck with the group throughout.
Another one is Alain, at least he wasn't a Tobias or Solidad (i found her really cool, but I wished we got to see the full battle with May, at least Robert was more fleshed out during Hoenn). As much as I was sad Ash lost, but Alain to me also had a justified reason to win (even though we knew the Team flare thing would come). But because of his screw up with Mairin, hearing her cry for Chespie because he pushed her away intended to protect her but it only led to worst results. So winning the Kalos League was one step for Alain to redeem himself and make Mairin trust him again, and I'm glad they made up and travelled together at the end of the series.

He’s a great character but as a rival I feel like he was a bit weak as I feel he works more as someone who battles along side him but as a rival he didn’t really do much for Ashs story other than developing Greninja

My favorite Pokemon rival is Morrison I love his arguments with Ash and his determination. He struggled in the hoenn league but he did learn to snapped out of his frustration with Ash's help.
Paul is definitely the best rival. I love that Drew made it so high on the list. Watching him be around for so much of May's journey was great. Their battle in the kanto grand festival is one of my favorite battles.

Honestly, I keep forgetting that Nini existed and I knew you couldn’t resist bringing up Cameron on the worst list and I don’t blame you. XD Great list, Zac. I hope we get to see Swayer and Paul in the future like we did with Gary.
Paul is and probably always will be Ash's best rival. Not to say every rival that came after was bad, no far from it. It's just that Paul was so good at what he did that I don't think anyone could compare.

I actually loved jessilina from diamond and pearl and like most of her performances much more than dawn's because they were actually creative and interesting. It's a shame she wasn't good at battles considering she's Jessy
Anime rivals are WAY better than the game rivals these days. They get actual arcs beyond: "we're friends, let's battle on occasion" or "You are so good that it's given me a complex, and now I am over my complex"

Same. Gladion and Paul were the most interesting because their relationship with Ash was heavily implemented in the series' plot.
Yeah I like Paul and Gladion as the best rivals and Gary to but not anymore for Gary but are Paul and Gladion Ash’s strongest rival? No
Maybe, but that Championship battle was so disappointing.
Gladion had more character development, and Paul was kinda different rival, an actually rival to be fair
Paul was more impactful, because he was meant to be Ash's goal.
But Ash and Gladion have a lot of history and solid competition throught the anime, more than almost any other rivalry; to say that he wasn't a good rival as much as he was a good character it's false and inaccurate, since he's actually pretty balanced.
Probably more balanced than more appreciated rivals like Gary, Drew, Trip or Sawyer.
My favorite is definitely Sawyer because he is just so cool. He surpasses ash for a little and makes ash really get his unpredictability back.
I think Gladion is second best after Paul because unlike all other major rivals Gladion had huge role in the series rather than only exist for being Ash's rival, he was present in almost all major arcs of SM, both Ash and Gladion inspired each others to get stronger and complete island trials, the impact Ash had on Gladion is bigger than all other rivals that Gladion is probably closest friend to Ash after Gary among rivals.
Nah there no way Gladion is Ash's second best rival , for starters he doesn’t even have six Pokémon , his battle with Ash was boring aside from the lycanroc duel and Pikachu hogged screen time that could have benefitted Meltanmetal just to beat signally and tie with zoroark.
@@rubinivory-rodriguez3715 how did you know Gladion doesn't have 6 Pokemons? Writers can easily give Gladion 2 more Pokemons just like Alain who had only one Pokemon until he meet Ash get 5 out of nowhere just to battle Ash,
Bruh Melmetal and Pikachu battles was also great/amazing, Melmetal vs Silvally is the battle fans wanted ever since Ash got Meltan, those 2 legends hitting hard to each others, Ash outsmarting Gladion with electroweb and iron tail combo to beat Silvally, Pikachu vs Zoroark had amazing fast paced animation and the z move double KO is one of the best double KO in entire Pokemon anime, all 3 of them played huge role for Ash to win.
Ash vs Gladion was even better than all OS, AG and BW battles 6vs6 battles.

And what a missed opportunity of showing Gladion’s six Pokémon I mean they showed all of Alain’s six Pokémon how hard was it to show Gladion’s six Pokémon , and the fact that Gladion didn’t use his in game backstory.
Overall Ash vs Alain was a better final league battle than ash vs Gladion.
You’re overhyping this battle way to much just because Ash won a league here doesn’t mean anything.
And how can you say ash Ash vs Gladion was better than all 6v6 battles in the OG , AG , and BW series combined. Although I personally hate the Kanto era of the OG series the rest of the OG series has some epic 6v6 battles.
And how I know that Gladion doesn’t have six Pokémon is that the writers never bothered to show his other three Pokémon at all

Ash vs Gladion was even longer than all Johto and Hoenn league battles, far better strategies and better animation, they're 6vs6 battles just for name sake but literally almost all the round was OHKO even Charizard OHKO all 3 of Gary's Pokemons he faced,
In what basis Juan, Nando, Stephan and Spencer was better? They're decent In comparison, Nando battle has that bullshi't TR moment which skip almost entire Quilava first ever battle, before Heracross all other rounds end too quickly, there are so many annoying TR scenes during Juan battle, wth is Stephan had in comparison?
I never said Melmetal vs Silvally was epic like Regice, but it was good with both side hitting hard each others and it shown how Melmetal despite evolution isn't Deus ex machina and still need to work.
Pikachu vs Silvally is waaay better than Nando's Armaldo vs Starraptor and Quilava, Pikachu vs Zoroark had far better animation and amazing strategy than all those battles you mentioned from OS-BW and the z move clash was so epic, Lycanroc battles was intense and has faaaaar more impactful than all those battles you mentioned from OS-BW outside Gary.
OS and AG/BF animation and strategies are mediocre in comparison, those 6vs6 battles barely last for more than one episode while Ash vs Gladion was almost 2 episodes long, had faaaar more build up and written rivalry (only Gary is comparable in rivalry)

Kinda unrelated but how cool would it be to see max return in journeys so that he and ash could have that match that was promised to him. I feel like max would try to be super smart in battles while also adapting ash’s unpredictable style causing him to really struggle when facing someone as good as ash. It would be a great moment to see him struggle and ash to tell him he should figure out his own style rather then to copy his. I think it would be a awesome return episode for max while also being a good character moment for ash.
I think older max would be like a mini Conway with the battle strats and uncomfortable moments

I personally like Sawyer & Alain more than Gary because of their dynamics in XYZ. And also cuz Gary didn’t show up as much as he shoulda. But we all know Paul is the best rival!!
I feel Gary was played for laughs. The giant Krabby, the ten badges, capturing forty five Pokemon in thirteen episodes. His superiority to Ash was a comedy thing.
Paul was taken more seriously, whereas Gary's comedic role made sense for Season One, I'd say.

@@heavydonkeykong5190Plus, unlike Gary, Paul actually consistently showed his prowess and capabilities as a Pokémon trainer on-screen, and the gap between him and Ash, and their contrasts as trainers, were displayed on-screen instead of just talked about by Professor Oak or boasted like in Gary’s case through most of the anime.
There’s a reason why the “show, don’t tell” rule exists.
Professor Oak continuously tells Ash about Gary’s progress, but we rarely actually see Gary’s progress and capabilities, and sometimes whenever Gary is on-screen, he doesn’t always show for it. It only feels substantial (at least for me) if the character actually shows the capabilities first before they are talked about, so that they are not only proven, but also interesting to see.
With Paul, the gap and contrast between the two characters, between him and Ash, is shown through actions, battling skills, strategies, deeds. Not words of praise from his grandfather.
But there's a problem, lack of narrative, we must realize that Season 19 is a season that, despite having so many positive things, is very rushed and is mostly a Season focused on Ash and Greninja, Alain was brought in at the last minute to be a Ash's rival like Morrison, (at least it's an improved version) and they barely had some rivalry dialogues, and Sawyer is interesting, but I feel like he lacked more focus because he was a little thrown to the side by wanting to improvise Ash and Alain's rivalry, so Sawyer is a very good character, but not perfect, I wish that he's the main rival for Ash.

While Gary and Ash could've battled more, I don't think battling in itself was ever the main theme of their rivalry like most others. Paul, Sawyer, Alain, Stephan and Gladion all did great during their times and all managed to being something unique to them. (Gary felt like a special long-term influence on Ash. I think his sporadic appearances during OS helped his post-OS ones, as they can add new stuff to him and his bond with Ash. If I were to picture an all-out battle with them today, it has the potential to top their Johto; not just animation-wise)
It'd be cool to see some of the other rivals in Journeys, though I don't expect them to "reprise" their role. (Just an update on their part, and maybe a friendly battle. Even with PWC.)

I love that the chose to make Gladion Ash's rival. Seems more interesting than Hau, or some generic dude like in Johto and Unova (which Paul would be if not for the writing).
jessilee and jessilina are both Jessie in disguise. I also almost didn't notice it. But if you place attention they are never in the same place with Jessie at the same time.

While I really like Bea (she is great), I don´t think that she should count as Ash´s rival. She is more of a challenge to Riolu (now lucario) rather than a rival for Ash himself. That´s why she always calls him Riolu´s trainer. In my opinion she is a bit more interested in Riolu´s strength rather than in Ash as a trainer.
And something similar happens with Leon. He is more of a goal to reach rather than a rival.
And while Jessilee had less screentime, I still think that the few performances that she was able to show were more interesting than what Jessilina did. I´m not saying that Jessilina was bad. But I think that pokemon performance and Jessilee as a character is more in line with Jessie´s personality.
The rivals make the Pokemon anime better. It adds more story to the characters.
This is the best way to introduce all the rivals in the Pokemon Anime!

Some of mine are Gladion, Sawyer and Alain. Paul was a double edged sword for me. I hated the fact that he was a typical bully but I do think he had a point about power defining how good a Pokemon is, since some of ash's clearly didn't have the strength to get plenty of wins. I'm looking at u torkoal, torterra, boldore, unfezant and Oshawott
People still think torterra was weak, he battled elite four, battle frontier and he was better than buizel and gible. Ash didn't train him much and focused on his infernape. Torterra with Earthquake is a beast and anime didn't show it.

I agree with Tobias not being a rival. I'd say he's more like a bonus/secret boss in a video game, one where you don't have to beat them, but get bragging rights if you do.

My rankings for Ash's Rivals:
1. Paul and Gary: Excellent foils to the main character
2. Sawyer: Kind of nice seeing an Ash fanboy and student of the game. Cool nerd
3. Alain: Introduced really late, but still a cool character and legit great League rival for Ash
4. Gladion: Good rival with no complaints.
5. Kiawe: Probably the best Friendly Rival in the series not named Sawyer.
6. Morrison: Good character and energetic rival, offered something different in his hesitation to battle Ash.
7. Richie: Wish we got more, even though he's just an Ash clone I always enjoyed Richie and hope we see him in Journeys.
8. Barry: only this low cause he and Ash never got a proper final battle at the Sinnoh League, he's good and annoying as a character.
9. Nando: was an interesting rival for both Dawn and Ash.
10. Stephan: best of a mediocre bunch from Unova and way more memorable than the actual main Unova rival Trip a.k.a. Great Value Paul, (nah that's insulting to Great Value) shitty Dollar Store Paul

Harrison/Tyson/Tobias are essentially the same character, with minor differences. They all ended Ash's League run and did not exist prior to or after the League Arc
At least with Harrison and Tyson they had a close battle with Ash and could have lost to him, whereas with Tobias, ash had no chance of winning
