- We're making a trip back to Phoenix to have an annual inspection on 4DT and visit some friends while we're there. Not long into the flight, the roll servo malfunctions so it's a 4 hour hand-flight.
I'm looking forward to hearing how your annual came out. Could you do a video specifically on the annual? What was done what needed to be replaced what was the cost Etc. Thank you so much for the time and effort you put into making all of these videos. They're entertaining and informative. May God bless you and your family!
Hi Chuck. Overall, the annual went fairly well. Nothing major except a crack in the airbox just behind the air filter. I was able to find a replacement pretty quickly. All in all it was less than 8k which is good. Thanks for the kind words. God's blessing to you and your family as well.
Loved watching you fly over the lakes, Las Sendas, and Longbow!
Welcome to the world of long cross country hand flying! I don't have an autopilot, so I get to do that every time I fly. :-)
We had the very same problem recently in our 2011 Meridian. We lost our roll servo in El Paso, which meant a long flight back to San Diego by hand. The roll servo had just been replaced and then failed again. Our mechanics decided to switch the roll and yaw servos to see if the problem was the servo or perhaps the connections or something else. After the switch, the roll servo worked and the yaw servo didn't, so we knew the problem. Then we discovered the autopilot will still work if the yaw servo is out, but not if the roll servo is out. Not that it matters, you want them both. :) Anyway, I hope you got it all sorted out. I really appreciate your videos. Blessings and peace.
Hi Tom. Thanks for the info. My issue turned out to be a failing roll servo. I got one from a friend that just upgraded to the GFC600 and it works perfectly.
The Boss needs a Clarity Aloft. Love your content. Glad the AP issue was “just” a servo.
Beautiful aircraft, and I always enjoy your videos.
Looks like the annual came just in time with that AP failure
👍☑️ Always love a new video from you!
Another great video! Keep them coming. Never miss one.
Good to hear from you again!
One would have to wonder possibly if the ap failure is related to the update that gave you the g meter? Either way, nothing a truck load of cash will not resolve, lol, Thanks
Corey! Heard you in the skies (and saw you on the map) today near Dallas. First time I've heard a RUclipsr while in the air! Blue skies!
Hey Ben! Thanks for the note. Yep, that was me in and out of KFTW.
Thank you for the video - hope the family and you are doing well. Take care - God Bless. Spin
Hi Tom. I appreciate it! May God's blessing be with you and your family as well.
Good luck on your annual, here’s to no unpleasant surprises (beyond the one you already had with the A/P)!
Three hours hand flying - tough but one needs to be able to do it when needed.
Reminds me of the flight from La Rochelle (France) to Biggin (UK) when my S-Tech 55 autopilot failed on take off - took several seconds to figure out why we were turning left when we should have been going right.
That too was all hand flying thereafter - very tiring!
It was also a roll servo ‘gone tech’.
Everything breaks eventually.
Hope you'll fill us in on the diagnosis.
Man! I didn’t know you were at ASG! I’m from FSM! Love the videos! Malibu’s one of my favs!
Curiosity... Ever think about swapping the 2 blade for a 3 blade prop? Pro's / Con's for the Malibu? I'm a Baron 58P driver...
Ah, nothing a few grand won't fix. Nice video.
They may not be rugged mountains but the hills of Northwest Arkansas are quite nice.
Not so good having to hand fly it all that time! It must be mentally tiring, but you made it, now the expensive bit!!! :-((
Love your cute dog looking out the window. So adorable!
5:00 regarding your METAR flag colors. I happen to work at the company you named in the aviation division and here is the reason for the flag colors; The FAA will not allow the use of red on any datalink weather METAR for part 25. They would agree, begrudgingly, to use the industry standard for Part 23 avionics, but we needed a set of colors that were certifiable everywhere. So what was chosen was what could be used out of DO-267A requirements - sky blue/green/amber/magenta. Hope this helps.
Thanks, Ironically my wife and I had this same discussion a while back, Green good to go was what I was used to on foreflight, Never could figure out why Garmin chose Blue, but that makes sense, still wished there was continuity between everybody!
Thanks for the insight! I appreciate it.
Nice airplane. Great trip. AP failure at 1000's of feet up, not so bad. ILS final in IMC, could be a little tense. Always plan ahead for a failure.
Great video…
I just upgraded to the GFC 600. If you ever need any parts for the KFC 150 I have a box of them including all the servos. I bet you miss Phoenix but getting in and out of Falcon Field can be hectic at times.
Hi Bryan. Congratulations on the new GFC600! I actually got a replacement roll servo from another Malibu pilot who had also just upgraded. You're right about the Falcon class D, it's BUSY!
Garmin is probably saying Foreflight should change their flag colors, maybe it’s a competition thing.
Hell yes. LMAOa that Garmin should change for an app
Enjoy your vidoes so I subscribed. What does Malibu normally cruise at along ground
Thank you. I normally file for 185 kts. true airspeed
there must of been bacon on that runway because you greased it!
that plane is nice as hell
I own a Piper Malibu also. Can you tell me about your camera mounts and where you attach them, both inside the airplane and outside? That would be so helpful! Thanks, keep the videos coming. I learn something every time.
Hello. I use the NFLightCam mounts on the wings and the standard GoPro suction mounts on the internal cameras.
Time to upgrade from KFC 150 autopilot to GFC 600 😎
Right in time for the annual. Will you post an update after the cause is discovered?
KFFZ - That's my home field.
Time for a GFC600 upgrade
I Malibu hope you and family are well. Good video a part from going to the left and right going off coarse. Did you work it out just what happened phil. Keep safe and well buddy phil.
Malibu Flyer, I saw you flying out of Springdale, AR airport. Do you folks live in NW Arkansas? I, too, live in NW Arkansas. Good flight, and I hope the annual came out well. I always enjoy your videos. Happy flying, and always safe landings.
Hi Richard. Yes, we moved to the area last January just in time for the "cooler" weather :).
@@MalibuFlyer Well, welcome to the area!! We moved here last year from the DFW Metroplex area, in Texas, and really enjoy living here. Be safe in your travels, and happy flying and safe landings always.
You aren't by chance based in the same airfield as "Rebuild Rescue" by any chance? When I seen your hangar pull-out segments and the alleys between the hangars it looks very much similar if not the same. Just curious.
As a previous owner of a nice Arrow, I have so many questions having watched all your videos. (anyway to contact you direct?)
Here in Europe, IR used to be very onerous to obtain, but more recently a little easier. (I had to go the long way around with 9 out of the 14 ATPL ground exams - personally no need for a PPL to learn how to use the FMS for a B737, but that was necessary at the time -- much easier with the BIR in Europe now -- if only they had come up with that 15 years ago when everyone was begging for it !!)
I'm not sure what that is but I don't think so...
@@MalibuFlyer Rebuild Rescue is a charitable organisation that picks up old/abandoned aircraft (and other vehicles such as boats etc.) and puts them back into airworthiness condition. I have been following them on YT for a few months especially for their updates on the Cessna 401 and the Trinidad TB20 (but also the boat, but not much lately on that score). Here is their YT ruclips.net/channel/UCPygLEFniGZmehxouDK-vbw
Just curious, do you do yearly recurrent training in the Malibu? If so, who with? Thanks
great video, hope the annual went well. Why was the lady not wearing her headset, the engine can cause damage to your ears quickly without a nose cancelling headset.
The noise cancelling does not actually provide any protection just better experience. The nose canceling may impact smell. Either way a headset in general should add some hearing protection. Pressurized planes generally have lower noise than unpressurized but I think a Malibu is still fairly loud.
entinstitute.com/noise-canceling-hearing-protection-does-it-really-exist/
Were you in ground effect for just second there on take off?
Like the videos and appreciate sharing your private flying experience. Subscripting.
Hi Robert. Yes, once I get off the ground I dip the nose just a bit to let airspeed build to 90kts.
@@MalibuFlyer thanks for response! Enjoy the videos and beautiful plane.
Right? You know damn right!
I miss you man!
Was this just a roll servo problem, or did u lose all AP?
Hi Jeff. It was the roll servo that was going bad.
Corey-question for you and apologies for doing so via the comment feature....hopefully by now your Annual is long done....question involves use of the long range tank STC, I'm [hopefully] picking up my plane on Friday after this has been installed, was wondering if you had any operational tips. For example, I assume you keep the outboard filler ports locked unless you want the extra fuel? I've asked for a copy of the POH supplement to review in advance but haven't received it yet, so info from somebody who actually uses this feature is much appreciated.
Hi Carl. You're correct. Although you can fill the entire tank from the new outboard fillers, I think it's much faster to use the stock inboard fillers if you're taking less than 120g. In fact, even if I'm filling to 140g, I fill through the inboard caps, seal them, then fill the rest through the outboard. Obviously, make SURE you never open an inboard cap until that tank is below 60g. I hope that helps.
@@MalibuFlyer Yes, extremely helpful and I can imagine the 100LL geyser you get if you open that inboard cap too soon! Appreciate the reply.
@@MalibuFlyer Update-PHX-EUG, 5+12 @ FL240, landed with 42 gallons remaining. Nice to be able to do a long flight and not stress the fuel. Now if I could only get that TIO-540 to run as well LOP as your TSIO-550 does….
@@carlrossi7989 That's great! Being able to get up high and stay there is something that few other piston platforms can do.
I missed the move somewhere along the way. Home airport now is where?
Hi Richard. We are now living in Northwest Arkansas and KASG is home.
It’s a machine. I can see your frustration when equipment doesn’t work as planned. Hopefully works out at annual.
So true. As they say, software eventually works; hardware eventually fails.
2:44 close call!
Is this a case of AP malfunction sir?
Well good to see you can hand fly, but I imagine that was a bit exhausting for that long. We sure do get spoiled don't we?
every one of your videos you're battling weather..., is that what its going to be like for me??? think about buying a jet!
who does your annual at KFFZ?
Straitgate Performance in the NW corner of the airport. He knows the PA46.
So, what happened with George?
Apparently, the role servo went bad. I swapped it out and it’s working perfectly now.
Not good when the pilot says "Why is it doing that??"
So what happened to the AP?
It Turned out to be a faulty roll servo. I have since swapped it out and it works perfectly
Always fun to fly with you. Hope we get to hear what was going on with your AP. Did you find anything wrong with your auto pilot? Blessings to you guys!
Thank you. It turned out to be a faulty roll servo.
@@MalibuFlyer Glad it wasn't anything major. It served a pupous, got you some tine hand flying.
Just came across your channel! Great stuff. Great close up of the panel. May I ask what camera or method you use for recording the video of the panel up close? I get a lot of glare with my Hero9. Thanks in advance. PS Beautiful aircraft and great editing!
Hello and thank you! I use a Ram iPad yoke mount as the base for a GoPro Hero7. To reduce glare, I shade the pilot side window as necessary.
@@MalibuFlyer Thanks very much for your quick reply! I will take note of your tip to reduce glare. Cheers and keep up your great video skills!
2:44 was that a bird?
It was. Too close!
touch brakes on takeoff?
To stop the wheels spinning as they enter the bays ?
yes. I thought they were spinning when the bay closed.
@@frankedwards5951 The nosewheel doesn't have brakes, but there is a roller in the nose area that the wheel runs against to slow it down when retracted, the nose wheel actually rotates 90 degrees on retraction.
very good. I used to fly a Comanche 250, years ago. it has since been scraped. Love your flights...
I had to laugh when you whined about 3 hours of hand flying. I just got back from a 6.5 hour flight from BFL, moderate chop for the last 4 hours of the flight, 1000 agl to stay below the smoke and follow the highway, and this was in my 172E. I was exhausted when I put her in the hangar at EUL. Anyway, I enjoyed your video.
If I paid upwards of several hundred thousand dollars, I'd be bitching about my autopilot too.
I think the FAA should ban any device (cameras) from being mounted in such a way that they reduce visibility. VFR means SEE AND AVOID! An airplane two miles away is a speck hiding behind that GoPro.
OMG, not an A/P failure ....now we haft to fly the a/c...something a lot of copilots can not do..lol
Corey, hope you stay healthy. No disrespect, but your wife seems totally disinterested and doubt she could handle a landing if something happened. I’m sure you’ve considered at least some lessons.
Your daughter, on the other hand is a cool ,collected ,attentive alpha woman!
Looking for traffic but never actually looked. Twice
Seriously? How about foreflight APP changes tk Garmin flag colors. The main avionics in every airplane should change for an app. LMAO! Big loss of respect for such a dumb comment
I'll try to earn it back in the future.
They should call you The Zeck, not The Zeek
@@MalibuFlyer you earned mine
