      It is a common misconception that families have their own "Coats of Arms" or "Crests" (Both are misused terms) Instead people often use symbols that their parents used on their own unique heraldic achievement. Boars don't actually have any meaning, just an ancestor of yours decided to use them for his achievement, (Maybe they had personal meaning to him.) and it was passed down through generations. (Being changed by each person so that their achievement can be distinguished from the rest.)

    I can vouch that the lion was used in Austria in the 14th century for knights, and the eagle was used for royalty; especially if the royalty was Roman Catholic. The eagle is a holdover from the Roman Empire.

      It is a common misconception that families have their own "Coats of Arms" or "Crests" (Both are misused terms) Instead people often use symbols that their parents used on their own unique heraldic achievement. There are different variations because each member of your family had a unique "Coat of Arms" Don't lay claim to any of these variations because they don't belong to you. Instead create your own coat of arms inspired by your clan.

    Its a nice video, but hardly any coat of arms has deeper meaning, in means of symbolism. They are "speaking", or were adapted deliberately.

    • @G1NZOU
      @G1NZOU 3 года назад +2

      It depends, some of the early ones and the very simple two colour and then an ordinary aren't that complex or meaningful, just a way to show identity in jousts and in court. But some do have meaning applied after they're made or adapted, and a lot of new ones created with the help of an officer of arms include a lot of deep meaning in the design.
      Take the Middleton's arms for example, granted to the Middleton family when Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge married Prince William. The acorns referencing the family home of Berkshire, the chevron or referencing her mother's maiden name of Goldsmith, and the chevronels argent representing the family's love of the Lake District and skiing, as well as their family relation to Beatrix Potter, also from the Lake District.

    • @internetkurator9256
      @internetkurator9256 3 года назад

      @@G1NZOU those are modern examples, though. I'd say with the end of chivalric wars coat of arms turned into prestigous items, a paper science so to speak.

    • @G1NZOU
      @G1NZOU 3 года назад

      @@internetkurator9256 true to an extent, though there's some debate on how much actual use heraldry was on the battlefield.
      Some of the newer stuff does seem to be more about "lets throw a bunch of things that mean something" rather than the older style of "make it simple and distinctive so someone could see you in a joust or on the battlefield" with simple distinctive colours or a striking design that they liked.
      Though I still think some of the ordinaries and charges still had meaning from the start, like lions symbolising courage and nobility, and crosses implying devotion. Mixed with strong colours and a striking design you can be identified and remembered.
      I bet the modern trend of adding more stuff and carefully thinking of meaning is pretty much a result of necessity, all the simple striking designs are taken already and you gotta do something different to avoid picking a design that already exists, otherwise the heraldry authorities won't grant the design to you.

    What if any is the significance of the presidents of the USA coat of arms aka the seal of office?

    • @findmycoatdotcom5021
      @findmycoatdotcom5021  3 года назад +2

      Great question. The recurring number 13 refers to the 13 original states. The arrows and olive branch together symbolize that the United States has "a strong desire for peace, but will always be ready for war."
      The primary official explanation of the symbolism of the great seal was given by Charles Thomson upon presenting the final design for adoption by Congress.
      He wrote:
      “The Escutcheon is composed of the chief & pale, the two most honorable ordinaries. The Pieces, paly, represent the several states all joined in one solid compact entire, supporting a Chief, which unites the whole & represents Congress. The Motto alludes to this union. The pales in the arms are kept closely united by the chief and the Chief depends upon that union & the strength resulting from it for its support, to denote the Confederacy of the United States of America & the preservation of their union through Congress. The colours of the pales are those used in the flag of the United States of America; White signifies purity and innocence, Red, hardiness & valor, and Blue, the colour of the Chief signifies vigilance, perseverance & justice. The Olive branch and arrows denote the power of peace & war which is exclusively vested in Congress. The Constellation denotes a new State taking its place and rank among other sovereign powers. The Escutcheon is born on the breast of an American Eagle without any other supporters to denote that the United States of America ought to rely on their own Virtue”.

      The Seal of the President of the United States is used to mark correspondence from the president of the United States to the U.S. Congress, and is also used as a symbol of the presidency itself.

    Keys often appear on the coat of arms of bishops, since they hold the keys to the church.
    Sometimes meanings can be as simple as phonetics, like the arms of León and Castile, showing a purple lion and a stylised castle.

    Surnames don’t have coat of arms, individuals do. This can be passed down to direct male descendants, but no one else can use it but the individual and the son they pass it to.

      Clan McDermott has no coat of arms because it is a clan. Instead, members of your clan often used boars' heads on their own unique and personal coats of arms because it was a sign of the family.
