♻️Happy gardening to all my viewers and subscribers.
A friend gave us some of his fleece last year, it did protect a lot of things, squashes, yacon. We were told not to skimp but you can tease it out. I've put it around my beans - skimping, but I also put netting around the sides of the bed to deter the birds - they love lining their nests. Or just playing. Today we had a visit from a relative who works for the Soil Association. Where he lives, there is sheep fleece aplenty so they just put the whole fleece on the beds and plant through. Not only does it keep the slimers off, but it is an excellent mulch, finally rotting down to be a good soil improver. Have fun with yours Terry. Mrs King can take up spinning, and before doing that, wash off the lanolin and you can make soap! Tee hee!
@kerryl4031 thank you Kerry, you do shasome great information.
Thank you Terry. Much appreciate that comment - returning something helpful - I've learnt a lot from you! Happy planting!
Never tried the stuff but there is plenty of it to be had around here
@CoastalGardensNW with my situation at the moment I will be putting some of my empty beds to sleep so a good chance to do a comparison with green manure, cardboard and the sheep's wool.
Hi Terry, we got two huge bags like that. Our compost got the bulk of it, we used some in the bottom of containers and my worms got the rest. I did a head to head experiment with wool, worm castings and worm castings plus wool and the wool out performed worm castings alone and the two together did even better.
~ Sandra
@NanasWorms thank you Sandra.
Nice! I’ve heard of sheep’s wool in raised beds in the past. Glad you brought this up.
I googled it: Sheep's wool offers many benefits when used in a mixture as compost or mulch: as a source of slow-release nitrogen and other trace elements, in weed and pest control, moisture retention and temperature regulation. Wool may be used as a sustainable, renewable and environmentally friendly alternative to peat.
Wool biodegrades readily in as little as three to four months but the rate varies with soil, climate and wool characteristics. This releases essential elements such as nitrogen, sulphur and magnesium back to the soil, able to be taken up by growing plants.
It would be interesting to see what others will have to say about this as I’m very interested. Tfs 👍👍
@@jenniferm3572 looks like a few experiments and comparisons over the coming months.
I was lucky enough to be given a fadge of old wool a few years ago. I'm thinking that I received it around the beginning of autumn. Some went into the compost bin, but most was spread around the veg garden as a mulch. A lot of it rotted down over the winter and any left was moved aside for spring planting and then put back around the plants. I just left it there and eventually it all disappeared. I also like to spin greasy unwashed wool and then soak it in the bath without detergents. Phew, the dirt etc, that comes out is incredible. I say etc because I'm sure you can imagine what else is in there. The water is then used on the veg garden and the plants love it.
@fionaatbromleycottagenz393 thank you Fiona.
Hi Terry, fleeces are a great resource - I've as a layer in the compost heap, to 'earth up' potatoes and as a mulch under strawberries. I don't recommend for strawberry mulch - it was a devil of a job getting the wool fibres off the strawberries. It's also good as a mulch around peas and beans and under pumpkins to keep them off the soil.
@mariondunn6580 thank you Marion, definitely don't want to be eating wool.
Hi Terry,
Sandra @Nana's Worms & Garden had a video on sheep's wool.
❤Peggy❤
Thanks Peggy! It's such an underused resource. We got two huge bags for free 🐑

@peggyhelblingsgardenwhatyo7920 thank you.
Our allotment holders use wool on their plants both inside a poly tunnel and outside as well. Acts as a deterrent for creepy crawlies, keeps plants insulated during the colder months in Belfast.
@kungfu_koala8082 thank you for sharing this my friend.
It's gonna be interesting to see what people come up with.
@@babetteisinthegarden6920 my thoughts exactly Babette.
Hi Terry, it could be used for any insulation either to warm your soil or even in the rafters of your shed.
I'd also use it under my melons and pumpkins 😊
@GardenerGray thank you Gray.
I use the wool from wool packaging you get in Amazon parcels. I do find it repels slugs. They don't like crawling on it👍👍
@anjkovo2138 thank you.
As a sheep farmer in New Zealand we had lots of unsellable wool in sheds added it to the compost, tiger worms didn't seem to mind it, wouldn't use it on strawberries as wool fibre in the strawberries, but would use it around bigger plant's.
@helenstewart2085 thank you Helen 🐑🍓sheep and strawberries don't mix, cheers.
Very interested in seeing how you get on. A friend of my has a cottage next to a farmer who dumps all his wool as he can't sell it so it would be great if I could use some. I'll be waiting to see how it works for you.
@Canna1d won't be long before I put some of my beds to sleep so I am looking forward to seeing how it does in a comparison with green manure and cardboard.
I’m excited to see the suggestions that come through. It’ll be interesting to see how it works for you.
@NnekaOchonogor thank you my friend.
Should be good to cover sweet potatoes patch with it, for extra warmth
@AAHomeGardening the warmth topic is regularly in the comments, thank you.
I pick bits of fleece off the fences around the lanes where I live - nowhere near as much as you have there!
@PlasBachGarden yes but yours is free, well done.
@@terrykingsallotmentgardening Very true!
I would probably wash it first Terry to get rid of the lanoline that covers it to give that greasy feeling.
@FreeYourMindArt Mrs K definitely wouldn't let me use the washer, best if it's left outside......🤣
@terrykingsallotmentgardening . Terry don't wash it. The house will stink for days and you'll ruin your washing machine. I used to wash whole fleeces in my bath when I was felting and spinning. The house smelt like a farm.
@@TheEnglishladyskitchengarden I wouldn't even get it through the door......🤷♀️🤷♀️🤦😁😟.
I tried it once Terry it made my plants go barrrrrrrmy

So not weaving it and making Mrs K a sweater 😂. A shame what our farmers have to put up with these days 😢😢. Great update have a super day and hope Mrs K is better today and even more so tomorrow, Ali 🥵🌞🇨🇦

Id use it a mulch and maybe compost some.👌💪😁👍
@nickthegardener.1120 definitely going try it on some beds over the winter to cover my manure.
Never used it before but i will certainly be keeping a careful eye on the comments and also i will be having a look at Sandra Nanas Worms video on the fleeces.
@@Jimmy.Plot.41.b looks like I will be covering some of my beds with it to protect the manure and worms Jimmy.
@@terrykingsallotmentgardening I look forward to your updates on it Terry mate
@Jimmy.Plot.41.b should get a good supply next season, but it has to do well as my pocket money for the allotment's doesn't go far and at £20 it will be interesting to see how much is actually in the bag.
@@terrykingsallotmentgardening it will definitely be interesting to see how much your £20 gets you, also to see if you can find any pros and cons to using it.👍
