it was turn one. I wanted to move from Atlanta down South, quarantining my way through. Instead my group argued that it wouldn't be worth it and to fly to Asia to grab the 3 stack in Soeul. Since it was only turn one why not go for what you know would pop. After a few minutes I go fine! I draw Mexico city, giving everyone the told you look. Next player goes. He doesn't do South. He draws the epidemic, bringing 3 to Miami, shuffles, and draws Miami and Mexico city. Spreading yellow into the blue zones, and breaking Miami. Next player goes, doesn't deal with yellow. He draws Washington d.c., because of the Miami problem this now pushes D.C. past 4, infecting the whole coast, REPOPING MIAMI! Turn one isn't even over and the whole area is in ruins and we haven't even started yet! After that I was "promoted" to never listen to the group. It's been months and Miami popping is an inside joke that spans other games.
Not as dramatic, but our group has a "Fuck Tripoli" thing going on. That thing was so prone to combusting that we just made a team decision to well, screw that thing...!
Actually when you draw the bottom infection card in an Epidemic you remove all supply cubes from that city, but don’t add any Plague cubes if there aren’t any
Quinn's example of taking all the cubes off of São Paulo only to immediately get it drawn as an epidemic is actually quite a good play. Unlike normal Pandemic, in this game epidemics never place disease (or as this game calls them, plague) cubes down. Rather, they remove all supply cubes from that city, thereby making it easier for the infection phase of the turn to place plague cubes. By removing all the supplies yourself first, you're putting them in a safe spot where the epidemic card can't touch them. All that said, once the epidemic is over, you probably want to put those supply cubes right back in São Paulo ASAP.
Ya was searching the comments for someone to mention that because we just played our first game last night and I remember that rule because it's kind of counter intuitive. This example is incorrect per the rules.
Having just finished with 4 players. And 1+Prologue into the game with 2 players. I would say a higher character count ramps up the difficulty. It was a narrow and lucky victory. Supremely lucky.

This has to be the most negative positive review ever. From what i heared difficulty depends on how many players you play with. Did you only play with 2 players? or did you also try with 3 or 4?

The designers mentioned that difficulty scales up with more players - I think it was 20% harder with 4 than 2. If they crushed it with 4 I'm worried...
Aww yes, I'd been waiting, hungering (lusting?) for another video! It's interesting for Quinns to mention the possible issue of legacy games, even though I think he likes them a lot, in that you can't really go back and play them again to see if something stood the test of time. Especially when there's like a season 2 of something to try and build on such strong memories from season 1. I fear Season 2 is like trying to have a sequel to like... Citizen Kane.... or The Dark Knight where the original evoked such strong emotions at the time of playing/watching and it's hard to build on near perfection.
The real point of legacy games is the story. Not the 'in game' story/writing. It's the story and what you remember about playing. I love Trajan, but don't remember every play. I DO remember the twists of season 1 and season 2 has different but just as impactful challenges about it (as of April). I haven't finished season 2 yet, so I won't revisit this comment for fear of spoilers lol, but I think this review misses the point. Like watching a movie I don't need a lot to put myself 'in the game' and have the memorable moments of a legacy game. Maybe it's our group, but season 2 IS more challenging than season 1. We're primed to feel the failure in our victories (we use the mechanics to 'win' as the world collapses/game state changes) in each playthrough regardless of setting or writing. And by the end, season 2 will be an unabashed "victory" because every play will be remembered in some way. That's what I think the point is. The game is different, perhaps not as balanced in places (but if that bothers you I have to ask why you bothered buying a legacy game and not a Feld/Friese game), but just as memorable as season 1.
Really recognizable review. I had this same expierence with other legacy games in the past (e.g. Legacy Risk), where the game became more dull the more times we played it. Sometimes less is more and more often than not Legacy games are just too much. That's why I lost my interest in them.
So a post-apocalyptic world where we operate out of floating havens? Introducing "Pandemic Legacy Season 2: Waterworld". At least we might get those speed boats you teased in the Season 1 review.
I want a legacy game that plays like love letter, very simple with a story that expanding over the course of a single evening. That feels like a natural way to do a legacy game. Maybe I'm weird. My group struggled to get sessions of season 1 together, which was hard to predict being a problem. I think having ten to twenty-ish sessions for a legacy game is... well, a bit of a haul, not if each game has a an hour to two hour play time. Like, having each session be ten to twenty minutes and having the option to "binge" a light legacy game would be kinda badass.
I just looked on Amazon, and I noticed that there are a couple of different versions of this game, such as the Yellow Edition and the Black Edition. What's the difference between the two? Is it just aesthetic, or is there more to it? Also, why can you only play this game a limited number of times?
There are no functional differences between them; the different boxes are just for aesthetic purposes. You can only play this game once through because the game forces you to permanently destroy components or modify the game board (with stickers) as the campaign progresses
No. That would make it more expensive and take away the key draw of making permanent changes. Instead they made two different coloured boxes so that if you wanted to play it again afterwards you could buy it a second time.
Where Season 1 was one of my favorite games I ever played, Season 2 was without a doubt the worst game I have ever played. Any game that gives you no sense of direction for over half the game, punishes you for everything you do and then has the audacity to give you a practically un-winnable ending (I was literally yelling/pissed when I read how you "win") is ultimately a terrible game. And yes I played through to December. Dad I am sorry I put you through that... :( I am going back to base Pandemic. Season 0 can stay on the shelf for a good while. And Quinns, you have to be lying through your teeth to say this game was "too easy". It was actually BS at times. ESPECIALLY at the end. But I still thank you for reviewing Season 1. That was a good game! :D
Hi there, i have a question.. SPOILERS! On pandemic legacy season 2,Is it possible to connect by land two ports, ex: Navi Mumbai to Kolkata or Lima to São Paulo. Thanks in advance!
So here’s my question. My casual gaming friends really love original pandemic. I thought of getting legacy s1 then thought I’d wait for s2. Now I’m unsure if I should just track down the expansions for original and forget all the legacy craziness. Any thoughts from the hardcore?
The expansions make Pandemic interesting when you've played it enough to be bored by it. Each has a few modules that add variety and complexity. If you love Pandemic and want more of it, definitely get them. You know how Legacy works, right? If you love Pandemic and want more of it, definitely get Season 1. Then watch this review after that.
SPOILERS! So Quinns talked about getting attatched to cities i seasson 1, well I didnt but I came to fear one: Istabul. So in the middle of the game a new character showed up Colnel Weng and I just imedeatley told my sister "Oh thank god, dont worry now...the military is here and they will clean up this entire mess." They didnt I just made our middle east "situation". While my sister just shoke her head as I ran all over the place and tried to kill Faded and failing misserabley. Then I drove into Istanbul decided to commit and stay, we cleanded the city from all Faded and it looked like I finaly started having it under controll. It was a trap, next thing I knew the military unit got ambushed and we were forced to pull out of the region, I had to pick a second scar and of course he had gotten PTSD and so ended the military's involvement in the middle east. With the "Battle of Istanbul" As he said, I doubt that this game will bring that kind of memory to me.
I am going to go ahead and disagree with you here. Firstly, wife and I loved Season 1. In fact, we considered it the best board game we have ever played. Season 2 is faaaaar better. Here is why. Firstly, its Pandemic with a twist. The board being small at the beginning is brilliant. It makes sense. That is all we know about the world at that time. The idea of dropping off supplies to ravaged cities and helping them through the plagues is genius. Building new supply centers to facilitate that too, really good. Now take Season 1 where every game you cured the disease to then have it re-appear the very next game. Makes no sense. Here, you have the idea of delivering supplies. Makes more sense. Secondly, everyone will have a different game at the end. We are up to June now and yeah, it got hard and we loved that. We did things differently but probably reasonably close to what others may have had. Either way, at the end of this game, my copy will be way different to yours. In Season 1, everyone would have had the same experience but where the disease mutated would have been different. Lastly, the story is fantastic. It is sort of RPG with board game and deck building. Consider that we can make up who our characters are. We can create stories about them, why they live where they do etc. We have never had an issue with the fact it is 71 years later. In fact, that is what I love! Trying to imagine what that world would be like makes it even more thrilling. Seeing what the affect of Season 1 had on the world by reconning allows me to understand how incredibly damaging the virus was. I'm choosing which cities I want to connect, I get to build my player deck. I think you may have had your expectations waaaaay to high and where expecting a Season 1 expansion. It is a sure fire 10 for me.
We actually got a pretty good score in the first season, the world shouldn't be this bad off after our play though. I wish they factored in season 1 events for us......
hm ok really dissappointing that it seems to be easier I would have liked it a bit harder than S1 or at least as hard. I want to feel the pressure and tension. (we had bout 60% winrate in S1) Also sad to see the relationship stickers go. It was my sisters and my own fave tidbit for characters to be fleshed out and all.
Bear in mind Quinns is saying it’s easier but other reviewers like the Dicetower gang say it’s more challenging to win. (Dicetower won Season 1 but got destroyed in Season 2 if I recall right.) So you may want to take what Quinns says about the difficulty with a grain of salt, I think it’s more a matter of Season 2 is not the same game, it has a number of new mechanics, and the way the board expands and such have big impacts on your chances of success. And the legacy elements don’t come in as linearly in Season 2 as they do in the first season so it’s going to have a wider range of possible game balances over time among different groups. Basically I think individual game groups’ mileage will vary on how easy or difficult they find the game, that’s just my guess.
I'm no longer as excited for season 2... I'll wait for the price to drop. Is it possible that season 2 wasn't that exciting because you've been through the whole process of "opening boxes" once ?
I don't believe you played by the rules. Season 2 is much harder than Season 1. I like it more than Season 1 - the story and everything....it only sucks bacause it is really much, much harder. Check the rules again...
I don't think I've ever in my life seen or read a review on anything where the reviewer was so extensively and deeply negative about something he scored as "an 8 or 9." I appreciate and want nuanced, multi-dimensional reviews, but this is . . . hmmm.
BIG NOTE: everyone going in should be aware that the Legacy editions are designed for one play only! This is not discussed anywhere on Z-man's site or on the outside of the game boxes. (If I had known this going in, I would not have bought Season 1, period.) Despite the verbal abuse and snickering from "collectors," for most people this is an entirely foreign concept, especially since it has nothing whatsoever to do with the game play. It makes as much sense as telling people they can only open a book once. (A $75 library book? Are you kidding?) Z-man could have easily made the stickers, etc. reusable. Instead, for reasons I'll never understand, they made destroying physical game bits part of the game. (This was also part of Risk: Legacy, again for unknown reasons. Tearing up cards, etc. is apparently "thrilling" for people who are unable to keep their promises or play by the rules without being compelled to do so by an outside force. Warning: never marry these people. They think they get to commit adultery whenever they take off their wedding ring. Don't even get me started on their use of white-out on car titles...) Still hoping for reusable versions to be issued someday, but it will probably never happen. The true beauty of the Legacy tradition is to have decisions impact more than one session of game play. Fantastic, but Z-Man's claim that they're "preserving the experience" by not making Legacy games replayable is pure BS. The reason they have boxes in different colors is for people who are playing with more than one group at the same time. Why is it OK to play more than once if you shell out $150+? Ditto the argument that "most people" play games only three or four times. I've played all my versions of Pandemic & expansions at least 20 times over, and the original Pandemic I've played more than 100 times; it's a great game for mixed groups and new and experienced players. Their argument that all people are "collectors" who buy games just to look at them a couple times is ridiculous. (Double ditto the "already seen the movie" analogy: I've seen my favorite movies over a dozen times and routinely see new stuff that's good at least twice specifically because the experience is different the second (third, fourth) time around. Psycho and the Sixth Sense invite rewatching and have both been analyzed to the nth in film studies, yet Z-man would have us believe that once you know the ending, good movies become worthless. Some of us just don't go through media like kleenex. But, of course, we also don't buy stuff as often or as casually, so why acknowledge our existence? Yes, it pisses me off that Z-man is pretending half their customer base doesn't exist.) All the Pandemics are very cool, including Season 1, but the cynical component destruction silliness has been tagged on as a random, expensive, and wholly unnecessary feature. Are 12-24 games of ratcheted-up Pandemic worth ~$75? Your call. A lot of people have played only the first few "months" and then stashed the box in the closet to collect dust. Depending upon your situation, you may be much better off buying regular Pandemic and one of the expansions with that cash.
Having played Seasons 1 and 2, I think they're totally worth it for the single play through. I have some games in my game closet that I've only played a handful of times over the span of several years, but my family played through each season of Pandemic: Legacy in a matter of weeks. If I consider other ways that you can spend money and compare them, I feel 100% satisfied with these games. A person can go spend hundreds of dollars to see a single Broadway performance that lasts a couple of hours. What Pandemic: Legacy offers is more than enough for me to pay for it, as demonstrated by the fact that I already own extra copies of each season so that my wife and I can play them again someday with another couple. So, perhaps it's "to each his own", but I loved these games.
ive still got all the cards from legacy. all you'd need is a sticker set to play it again. but I wont, its just going to sit there. I don't like destroying things.
Andris Slisans And if it makes you feel better Quinns still said it was an 8 or 9 and gave it a recommended Buy. He liked the game, he just didn’t rave about it like he did Season 1 which he said would have been a perfect 10.
And hey, just a little tip... I think it would be nice to hear some music in the background, the video feels kinda empty without it (I still love them tho, of course).
As an American... I am offended by your remark toward us. We have a terrific President, Mr. Barack Obama, and I think that.... wait... wait WHAT? Donald Trump is President now?! WTF?! ... ehhhh... umm... ok yeah we deserved that then.
Europeans have only 3 major countries to remember when it comes to North America: Canada, the USA, and Mexico. Americans have to remember Scotland, Britain, Ireland, France, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, Germany, Poland, Austria Hungary, Holland, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Romania, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, and many more. That's without getting into the minor countries like Lithuania, Lichtenstein and Malta, or most of eastern Europe. No, I didn't look any of that up, I'm actually an American that knows this. So let me ask you, dear Quinns, or any other European who buys into the "Americans can't geography" stereotype.... how many States of the USA can you name? Where, roughly, are they located? Because we have states bigger and more populous than some of your countries. Seems kinda unfair that you can get away with lumping all of them into just "The US" while we can't lump all of you into "Europe." Or at least, "The EU, and Eastern Europe."
Same... until I played Legacy. The base game is admittedly mediocre (after the first few exciting plays), but the addition of legacy made it one of my top gaming experiences.
I agree if you're just talking the normal Pandemic game. We played till we won, then put it on the shelf and I was fine with that. But Pandemic Legacy Season 1 literally had us on the edge of our seats through most of the campaign. We couldn't wait till the next game. Easily one of the top 3 most fun board games I've ever played!
lol except it is... it's just Pandemic plus a few minor expansions that get added piecemeal (and somehow are less interesting and unique than the actual boxed expansions). The only mission that isn't "just Pandemic" is the final one, which is basically broken anyway. My entire group was extremely disappointed by S1. At least S2 looks like it has some genuinely new ideas.
I know you gave this game a recommendation and all... but the tone of your last few reviews has been so negative (kinda including this one)! I wonder if you're losing the passion for board gaming. Not that there's something wrong with that, if you decide to move forward with something else. It's just that your comments remind me of those made by rock/metal musicians before they decided to leave the scene.
I very much like the honesty from personal experience angle even if they spent a good portion of the video talking about the negative points on a 8/9 game. Are you seriously questioning their passion? I'm sure if they wanted to be doing something else they would be already, this shit isn't easy. Go watch their Twilight Imperium 4th vid and tell me they don't love doing this.
I get what you're saying... and you're probably right. It's just that lately, it seems to me, they are focusing so much on the bad aspects of the game that they are forgetting the good parts. That kinda reminds me of what some musicians said a few months/years before quitting. I'm not saying they will at all. I'm just saying that in this video Quinn complains for half the time about the game's flaws... and he's rating it an 8/9! Same thing happened with Marco Polo last week, Terraforming Mars before that, First Martians (kinda) too. The statement is always the same: It's not good enough, it's not good enough... and I find it a bit strange, when an 8 is not good enough. That's all.
I really appreciate a review like this. Too many board gaming reviews have been cheerleader squads saying how great each game is. It's this constant flow of "you've got to get this!! Rah rah rah!!!". I want to see more of this from all the active reviewers. Quinn explained that it was a great game but tempered any ferver with legitimate and well thought out criticisms. I still want to play Legacy 2 after seeing this review but my expectations have been lowered slightly - which is indeed a very good thing.
"legacy" is shit. Not paying a game that I throw out after one play. Best game with uncovering things that still gets used long after is Charterstone. Build the final product together to enjoy forever after... Far better than throwing it away after "completion". I would be more than happy to take all the money people love to throw into the bin, because that is all they are doing with these "legacy" games. How much of these games is recyclable and how many people actually recycle their game?
It's 2020 and the scene where Quinns sneezes on Matt hits a little diff now
As well as them shaking hands..

Thing is: I don't think it hits different. It just hits harder.

A post-apocalyptic world that was destroyed by a pandemic? Sounds like our future.
Quinns how many players were your Season 2 sessions? And to contrast how many were in Season 1?
Really recognizable review. I had this same expierence with other legacy games in the past (e.g. Legacy Risk), where the game became more dull the more times we played it. Sometimes less is more and more often than not Legacy games are just too much. That's why I lost my interest in them.
I'm going to be playing this solo... looking forward to it
that american geography joke hurts my feelings because it's true ;(
So a post-apocalyptic world where we operate out of floating havens? Introducing "Pandemic Legacy Season 2: Waterworld". At least we might get those speed boats you teased in the Season 1 review.
We named one of our characters Costner.
Fabled Fruit is worth a look!
Great video SU&SD!
haha you just made me laugh with your opening about wearing the costume haha
"Threadbare and Trite" --Referring to Pandemic Season 2. Accurate.
This franchise keeps predicting more and more accurately
I just looked on Amazon, and I noticed that there are a couple of different versions of this game, such as the Yellow Edition and the Black Edition. What's the difference between the two? Is it just aesthetic, or is there more to it?
Also, why can you only play this game a limited number of times?
There are no functional differences between them; the different boxes are just for aesthetic purposes. You can only play this game once through because the game forces you to permanently destroy components or modify the game board (with stickers) as the campaign progresses
Wouldn't it have made more sense for them to use a magnetic board and magnetic pieces so that it would be reusable?
That depends.. Do you want to pay twice as much for it?
No. That would make it more expensive and take away the key draw of making permanent changes. Instead they made two different coloured boxes so that if you wanted to play it again afterwards you could buy it a second time.
You are also asked to destroy cards, and place stickers on top of stickers. Magnets just can't fill those roles.
I am going back to base Pandemic.
And then Quinns threw Matt's copy of the game in the bin 😂
March to December .... I'm in April 2020 and this board game is Jumanji!!!! Please read this future historians... if there's any of you left.
Hey fellas,
Great video!
the link on the show notes "Visit SU&SD for more cardboard antics" leads to a 404
cheers!
Fixed, thank you!
Wow. That art is nice. I love the texture to it.
Oh man, I laughed out loud at that costume choice. Bravo sir!
With the "Battle of Istanbul"
As he said, I doubt that this game will bring that kind of memory to me.
Hahah that skit is on topic today
Rest in peace, Reference pear. You did your best for the world. And the world stands because of it. But it's worse.
0:50 that made me laugh XD
Did you just rip one of Matt's characters?
Poor Matt. Your day will come.
Hey, it'd be cool if you guys reviewed Pandemic: Reign of Cthulhu :)
It's Lovecraft. Aside from Arkham Horror LCG, if it's Lovecraft, they're guaranteed to hate it since it pretty much rapes Lovecraft's fiction.
i know im a bit late to the review... but did you just open a box in matts "mint condition" pandemic legacy?
Hands down the best board game review I've ever seen - very well done!
We actually got a pretty good score in the first season, the world shouldn't be this bad off after our play though. I wish they factored in season 1 events for us......
After my season 1, the world should be doing swimmingly with awesome future-tech and no epidemics.
Missed you guys at Essen Spiel!
How many of youre gameds have you played 12 time plus?
What's with the pen, NPI & SU&SD? ;)
Quinns looks really good. I dig those looks
hm ok really dissappointing that it seems to be easier I would have liked it a bit harder than S1 or at least as hard. I want to feel the pressure and tension. (we had bout 60% winrate in S1)
Also sad to see the relationship stickers go.
Y'all should review Machi Koro Legacy.
Well, you'll probably end up playing Season 1 many more than 12 times. We played it about 18 times, since we lost several plays.
We need more reference pears!
I don't believe you played by the rules. Season 2 is much harder than Season 1. I like it more than Season 1 - the story and everything....it only sucks bacause it is really much, much harder. Check the rules again...
It really depends on how the games go and the order you accomplish things. My group is finding it very easy as well.
There is a simple solution to connection with the game you just have to release 4 deadly diseases and wait a while.
2:30 No Quinns, no.
i wish i liked pandemic.
i'm certainly glad so many people love it.
Yet another game added to the list... lol... cheers guys! ;)
WHERE IS THE TWILIGHT IMPERIUM 4TH EDITION REVIEW???!!!
Dear god! Yes! Finally!
Season 2 wasted its Mad Max setting with a story that instilled very little sense of wonder.
3:40 3? I see 4
I don't think I've ever in my life seen or read a review on anything where the reviewer was so extensively and deeply negative about something he scored as "an 8 or 9." I appreciate and want nuanced, multi-dimensional reviews, but this is . . . hmmm.
Quinns has been in the mood of "WHERE ARE THE 10s DAMN YOU"
Disappointment isn't a direct reflection of quality, but rather of expectation.
I'm pretty sure I'm the only person on Earth who hates Pandemic.
Am I the only one who cringed when he ripped the character card?
I've played season 1 (and risk legacy). Nowadays when deck building games say to trash a card I have a slight twinge to tear it in half...
ive still got all the cards from legacy. all you'd need is a sticker set to play it again. but I wont, its just going to sit there. I don't like destroying things.
Shut up & give me the TI4 review. I command you.
Wow, sick burn on the 8 year olds 🤭
I bought this game today. Now I am depressed.
It's just one opinion. The Dice Tower guys, for instance, have a markedly different opinion of the game.
Yes I watched DT review as well. I hope this will be another game that I like much more than SUSD. T.I.M.E. Stories was other one.
Andris Slisans And if it makes you feel better Quinns still said it was an 8 or 9 and gave it a recommended Buy. He liked the game, he just didn’t rave about it like he did Season 1 which he said would have been a perfect 10.
Don't be depressed. Just play and enjoy it. Going into something with sky high expectations is a recipe for disappointment.
12 Times? I can't imagine playing Pandemic more than once a year, if that.
Same... until I played Legacy. The base game is admittedly mediocre (after the first few exciting plays), but the addition of legacy made it one of my top gaming experiences.
I also had my qualms, but Pandemic Legacy is not just Pandemic.
Personally, I really like that there are reviewers who are looking for 9's and 10's and who are willing to be critical of games.
That's all.
When you’ve seen so much it takes far more to impress I suspect.
FIRST
