It really wouldn't even have been all that hard to actually fix the intro. Whoever made the series could easily have just said that the guy mailed him the hard drive and when he went onto it, it was filled with weird things that actually weren't about the project. After not hearing from his friend for a little bit after trying to ask his friend questions about the hard drive, the protagonist goes to the guy's apartment, finds it completely ransacked, films it real quick, and then calls the cops. Boom, instantly far more intrigue, an actual investigation to go through, and everything is logically consistent.

There's a lot wrong with that scene, and I call some of it out in my comment above, but the other thing that your comment had me thinking was this: Anyone who is the type to rush into an apartment like that is going to do so for two reasons; either to see if someone is in danger/needs help, or to try and catch the person responsible for the break in. None of that involves rushing in to film it. Now, is the implication supposed to be that he did all of this off-camera and is only now breaking out the camera to document it? I feel like it would bear mentioning. Either way, this whole video is swiss fucking cheese.

Something I really likes about this series was the motif of the color red. Seeing a dedicated and subtle type of motif or symbolism like this is something I have rarely seen in any web series I can recall besides alantutorial or mushroomland. While what the color red is supposed to entail is never fully elaborated or anything, its still too consistent to not be intentional and goes to show how this series had some great idea but failed in execution of its plot and such.

Maybe it already exists and I just haven't run into it yet, but I'd love to see an unfiction series that starts out as someones self journey in documenting their sleep paralysis. Initially seeking to sate a curiosity about what happens to their body when they're experiencing sleep paralysis, only to realize as the series goes on that they're actually experiencing the effects of a physical presence.

    • @heavysystemsinc.
      @heavysystemsinc. 3 года назад +35

That'd be a cool one. There's old drawings depicting sleep paralysis that are pretty creepy. By any chance did you see the movie 'Awake'? The premise of that might also be interesting, a guy goes into surgery but the anesthesia that's supposed to put him under actually only paralyzes and numbs him so that he's awake for his entire transplant surgery. There's a mystery that he uncovers while under I won't reveal if you've not seen it, but I'd imagine as an unfiction story, it could be done as med school students or something. Speaking of, there's also Flatliners which might have an interesting premise to springboard from that also lends itself into sleep paralysis. If you've not seen THAT one, it's med school students that intentionally medically kill themselves for short periods of time for the thrill of experiencing death, with the friends essentially treating death itself like a drug they can't give up because the 'high' is so addictive. Just some stuff that came to mind while I was thinking of sleep paralysis. Not necessarily related but I could imagine a clever writer figuring out how to maybe start there and go wild places with it and not even need to have monsters....just disturbed people lost in their own experiences.

Honestly the minute I saw the words "Night Mind" and "Haunted MS-DOS game" I was like THIS IS MY SHIT but after watching it, it just made me appreciate Petscop all the more. It managed to tell a somewhat similar story despite the fact that we only ever see the gameplay and none of the off-screen characters(Paul, Belle, the Boss) . Petscop maybe a bit too much left unanswered too, but it still fell like a "complete" experience in a way Chip Time doesn't, everything connects up in one way or another. There's no "Paul takes a trip to Nebraska and this is never touched on again". Everything either has a stated reason or feels like it connects in some way.

The only time you see him get angry is when he feels a creator is either a) stealing with malicious intent or b) purposely harming people with their work. At least, that's what I've noticed. His uplifting, motivational... like, gentle encouraging but insistent pushing is one of the things I love about him, because it's legit. You can feel the realness in that voice.

Outside of the weird videos and emails that go nowhere, he's perfectly fine. Like, imagine how dull Marble Hornets would have been if Jay never got personally involved.
What I'm trying to say is, your idea would give us that moment of the uploader now becoming part of it, instead of a detached observer.

"I found this at an estate sale." You wouldn't believe the odd old stuff you find at these things. It cuts through all the weird "I found a crime scene and instead of calling the police, I tainted it and stole evidence" and even adds an implied sinister element to the story by the mere fact that the "artifact" might have led to the previous owner's death. So please, stop saying "I got this mysterious letter in the mail" or "I found this in my grandfather's box that he told me never to open" and just say "I got it at an estate sale."

There are more problems with the believability of the initial scene. I felt like I was nit-picking (my dad was a cop/detective and I'm an investigative journalist... I should have a degree in nit-picking) The whole thing screams setup. If someone was ransacking the place to look for something, there are chairs turned over, but the drawers are still in the desk and no one has cut into the mattress, cushions, etc. There are lamps knocked over, but the light bulbs aren't broken. This is the least believable break-in that I have ever seen. I just really wanted to point that out... I'm only like, 10 mins into it though, so I'll give it a break and continue.

This is more more in a pocket dimension aspect though. It's not that Simon lost time. If it was stated that the film was cut I would feel differently about it, but there's nothing to indicate it wasn't a one-take- as it makes the most sense to be unedited and that has been the style in general of everything on the hard drive. It was stated to be 30 minutes of him simply sitting there and leaving. It's more of a warping of time and space around a place or individual in this instance. Dilation in alleged abductees is usually referring to a someone thinking their hours was a few minutes or someone essentially "blinking" consciousness from one time to the next, but its method of action always seems to refer to that time as having indeed happened, it was just repression or forced removal of memory, etc.
The fact that the camera recorded it made that time leap more of a corporeal(in a _mostly_ figurative definition) idea, so space-time would have needed to move around his little pocket at a warped pace. Because of that, it can also start to beg the question of whether Simon was on the exact same timeline before and after the incident- whether this is a singular timeline idea where if someone was able to see him, but didn't approach closely, that he would appear seated for multiple hours or if he was "removed" to some unknown inter-plane area where time meant little in terms of coherence before and after. Interestingly as a potential development to the story, if the camera wasn't filming a one-take due to excessive glitching or a corrupt bit of footage in there where he was still seated after and appeared like nothing of note happened, or the shot wasn't with Simon in frame the entire time, a question could be posed of whether it was the same _Simon_ before and after, which could aid in what appeared to be a decline in mental state actually having a shifting aspect instead of the slowly going insane idea, which I find stale at this point, especially if done so quickly and casually as this.

Honestly, I feel like the "14 months later" return trip could have been reworked into an interesting plot twist. With a bit of editing and decent awareness as to the sounds and surroundings at the time, it could have been a real mind-bender. Imagine if right after he left the apartment he ran into someone, this person asks, "Hey, do you need something?", our mc answers, "No...just visiting my friend - But he's not home right now!", new guy looks at him like he's a weirdo, walks up to the apartment the mc JUST left, unlocks it, and we get a quick peek into the apartment to find it looks...normal. As in, a normal apartment that most definitely had NOT been ransacked recently. As in NOT what mc just left. It would have made the whole 'no police officer not being involved and no one cleaning up or anyone else checking things out for more than a year' plot point more believable as it would have called into question if anyone else even knew there was an apartment or anything needing to be looked into there in the first place, got our main character off the hook for any possible legal violations, and given them a LOT of plot ammo. But no, all we get is poorly wielded handwavium.

This rough set up reminds me of something I have always wanted to see in a web series. Someone entering the supernatural series as someone with a history of being a bad person and active criminal. Maybe even having a warrant. That would be immediate justification for breaking laws, stealing hard drives(could lead to the cops looking for the protagonist), and general inability to contact the police in the initial setup. This also has the benefit of opening new doors that are unexplored in web series and could create immediate high stakes for the protagonist. Not only do they have to worry about other worldly creatures but the threat of their imprisonment if they are found by the police. Even worse. They get so far in it that their imprisonment would almost certainly lead to their death if they are locked up and unable to run from it.

i kinda get two vibes from it, one its an EverymanHYBRID vibe with all the colored distortion effects and how its filmed and the second one is a more faint Paranormal Activity like vibe with the whole "keep the camera on at all times to record all of our actions so nobody thinks we are crazy"
But the narrator and such feels off and like its forced into the story without any kind of sense or organic feeling whatsoever, the narrator doesnt feel like one character more it feels like its one of your friends that tries to make a edgy dark story believable but since he wants to make it "spooky" he bends way too much certain rules in order for his narrative to work as he intends to work, and that's the problem he wants to be EverymanHYBRID and Dark Harvest way too quickly and the whole atmosphere and credibility of the story goes out the window in 2 seconds flat the moment the first video starts, work on the ambience and the world building a little then you can be as gimmicky and oscure as you want but you really need to work on establishing characters and their world better.
Not even once in the whole thing i care about any of the characters, in a way it felt like a videogame where characters are there in order to be some gameplay device or some plot device that helps in moving the story fowards, but they dont work like actual characters with personalities and stuff that makes you *CARE* for them because they are in a dire situation and you have to feel something, anything for them in order to feel the full impact of what you are trying to convey, this are just the most basic, plain and dull generic webseries protagonists i ever saw, the narrator that might or might know what's going on and surely wants to keep dwelling further into this madness because "because", the two main protagonists or victims that one is clueless as why the clever one is turning against him/her and might end up in a horrific situation because it cant do anything about it and we need something tragic to occur, and the clever one that knows what's going on but at the same time doesnt have a clue as well and needs to "find anwsers" just "because" and ends up being turned, possesed or transformed into something far worse than the others could imagined and its the main antagonistic force having the first real threat in the series being its "partner in crime" and almost not doing anything for the most part or being the magical justification for werid things to happend.
Sounds familiar? because its the same thing that happend with Habit and Slenderman, a unfortunate guy that knew way too much and ended up being the next host for an antagonistic force that was behind all since the begining, turning him into the mayor threat and the paranormal creature being the justification for all the werid and paranormal stuff that happend.
Look i know that you can be inspired by something when you come up with a new idea, and that's not a bad thing but you have to at least give it your own personal touch to make it stand out from the rest, fortunatedly it does have something unique this DOS game (when is a Game Maker game actually) called Chip Time, if the series were like Petscop and tried to mix paranormal stuff like EverymanHYBRID happening whenever he did something in the game and that resulted on what happends in real life could had been something very unique, like he is making a "let's play" and then when he opens something in the game it opens something on his apartment, then if a monster appears in the game then a monster appears in his apartment and the only way to get rid of the monster is via defeating him in the game, and if he wanted some cult to appear or something he could had reffered to Dark Harvest a little more because while its not a perfect description of a "evil" cult its the best one that happend on a webseries before, this "cult" here sounds bad at its best and very stupid at its worst.
Sorry for the long rant critique but yeah it needs *A LOT OF WORK* if it wants to be something better, the game part its really neat but they barely do something with that and that's a shame since it could hold endless possibilites for a very clever and very striking webseries, but just copying EverymanHYBRID with some hint of Dark Harvest cult stuff and a haunted video game its just dont mixing well enough to caught my attention as much as i initially thought it could do.

Here is what I would have done differently.
    1) Blake was sent everything in a box and when he tried to go to the apartment on the return address it was locked and nobody answered.
    2) Have the mini games from Chip Time actually be what Simon is doing. Have Simon be in a trance like state where he doesn't talk.
    3) Have Simon start to have an issue with sleep walking and losing time be related to why everything is recorded. Like a go pro that is constantly strapped to him. Even maybe relate it to issues he had before moving and it's why he is affected and not his girlfriend.
    4) Have Chip Time be like a proof of concept or something like a simple college project. Make a point that the company doesn't exist but when asking around the University of California, or whatever it was, talk about the weird guy who made it because he was memorably weird.
    5) Don't do emailed videos. Just do emails from Simon's account that are getting more disturbing the more we see Simon start to go insane/possessed. Even have it so "Simon" tells Blake where the key is if he wants to visit.
    6) Have Simon pretend like he doesn't see the monsters and what not in the footage but show him being upset or his body cam showing him freaking out when he is alone.
    7) In the last video before Blake goes to the apartment, have it be a huge mess. But when Blake does go, it's perfectly clean and orderly.
    8) Have Blake find the Chip Time floppy and have there be a new game that wasn't in the footage, implying that Simon has made a game for Chip Time. Meaning that every game in Chip Time was a victim.
    9) Find the guy who made Chip Time, have him be normal and nothing like what was described. He doesn't even remember what he did for the programming class project. And reveal that his bullies, maybe even abusers, called him Chip but that the name doesn't fit him anymore.
    10) Have an ending already planned because it's obvious they were making stuff up as they went along at a point. The ending I would have planned is that Chip put all of his hate into that shitty little floppy and essentially made another entity that has been trapping people inside the game and becoming stronger for every new intriguing mystery that was left behind for new people. First it was the weird AI in a floppy, than it was the games that seemed to be happening in real life. But Chip was made for an age without the internet, and now that everything has been discovered instead of trapping somebody else it's essentially powerless. No cult. Just others who were or are effected by it doing what Chip wants. Oh and no saving those people. They go crazy when Chip is powerless or they don't come back from inside the game.

You know... you could actually make a really stupid premise like the ransacked apartment deal work if the creator acts like they're playing it straight for most of the unfiction, only for it to reveal very slowly that the person who found the footage is the one who kidnapped/disappeared the victim, after framing it like a weird paranormal deal. In fact, I thought that was the direction it would take from his comment while touring the apartment of, "I don't know if this part of the project, or what." It sets it up like maybe the couple are playing him, setting up their own ARG story without looping him in. That could have also been a viable way to go, I guess. But neither of those things happened, so it just shatters the reality. I wish it had been clever enough to play on audience expectations.

Because well... they obviously would have known about the shadow man otherwise - UNLESS the implication would be that WE can see it but not THEY - which wouldn't work EITHER because we do not get even a slight hint of WHY only we would be able to see it (one way of doing that that comes to my mind is having the therapist or someone that randomly saw the footage flip out because of it, show it to them and them going "What do you mean? There's only an empty room/only us sleeping"). So, given that, it stands to reason that, had they watched the footage, they would have seen it - and I do NOT think they would have just kept going on like this, knowing that this thing was right besides their bed multiple times. At the very least I would presume that he would have consulted CHIP about it - he obviously tried getting information from it... but never once did he ask something along the lines of "Umm.... what is that creepy AF shadow man that can onyl be seen through a camera?!?"

i think i'd find the beginning more believable if it had been like. "hey here are some videos my internet friend sent me" and THEN had him go to the house to find it ransacked

Better yet, have him met the friend and have him arrive late and borrow the drive for the night to look at the files they were going to be working on, he comes back in the morning and finds the place ransacked and the friend gone, THEN goes through the other files to see if there's anything there that could indicate what happened.

Without even going beyond the first part, seems like an easy fix could be having this not be there first meeting and maybe the guy gave him the harddrive the last time they met. He shows up for the second meeting and finds the apartment like that. Let's him call the police and not need to steal evidence. Maybe that would ruin what comes later but I dont know

About 5 minutes in I was hoping you were going to discuss the story and elaborate on the mystery, not dive in on immediate criticisms of the creator's poor techniques intermittently in steps.
That said, thanks for shouting out the curious series.

Okay So to be fair, the creator messed up so badly in the Beginning that you kinda have to talk about it.

i do agree with your criticisms aside from the question “where did he get the technology to read a floppy disc in 2016?”
they’re like 20 bucks on amazon and it was clear he was using a usb reader.

Honestly, I think the problem was that life got in the way. Maybe they had a falling out or a breakup. A lot of ARGs have that happen.

Text in text-based DOS games was typically not green. It was typically grey. It was easy to make it green, but you had to go out of your way to make it green.
The fact that the text is green suggests that this program was created after the release of the 1999 film "The Matrix" because the reaction to any program with green text before that would have been, "Why is it green?"
That by itself is actually not far-fetched: there were still DOS programs being made by amateur game developers in the 2000s such as myself and some of them were influenced by the Matrix film. But it does move the program out of the heyday of DOS and into a period when it would have already been seen as "retro" upon its creation.
They probably made this in QBASIC.
Since it came on a floppy rather than on a CD or USB stick I'd put the creation of this game right around 2000-2002. Late enough to have been influenced by the Matrix film but early enough that floppy disks were still in lots of PCs. The creator would have expected people to have been running it in the DOS mode of Windows 98SE or in what limited DOS support Windows XP still had.
The printed out label absolutely checks out though.
