  • Continuing on with the Lembeh, Indonesia dive critter finds, I present to you the Wunderpus!! Wunderpus photogenicus.
We saw three different wunderpus animals, two during the day and the larger one at night along the reef. We must have been on our best behavior, because these animals are known to be shy and typically disappear into small sand burrows when approached. We were lucky enough to get close to them several times for the displaying of dramatic postures.
The Wunderpus octopus can often be confused with the mimic octopus. In this video, some of the distinctions between the two species can easily be observed. Of note are the more reddish-brown color and the lack of the white outline bordering the bottom of each arm compared to the mimic octopus which had a dark brown coloration and the white outline on each arm. The white circular patch on the mantle is clearly visible in several sequences.
