Remote Dive Site "Ule Pinnacle" or "Never Never Land" ~ South Kona, Hawaii
With a rare weather window in December, the ocean was surprisingly calm enough to finally try a site that has been on "my list" for far too long! This dive site is called "Ule Pinnacle" by island residents, but was also known as "Never Never Land" by the liveaboard Kona Aggressor when it was operating around Kona (pre-Covid). This site features a towering pinnacle that rises out of the water an...
Kohala Lighthouse Adventure Dive Day
Ever since a friend went sky diving in Kohala and I saw an aerial image of this area I knew I just had to dive it! After several reconnaissance trips to scout the area and become acquainted with the ocean conditions by comparing the "actual" vs "forecasted" conditions, my time had finally come. On an unusually calm day, the conditions were about as good as it's gonna get on this remote North-Ea...
Oceanic Whitetip Shark on Blackwater Dive
During a Blackwater Dive, we were ~ 3 miles offshore of Kona when an Oceanic Whitetip shark decided to cruise through the area. It often lurked just outside reach of our lights, but did make several passes much closer, some caught on video, and some not! Having this apex predator around made it very difficult to focus on finding and filming the weird macro critters that rise from the depths dur...
Happy National & International Sea Slug Day! Night Diving for Nudibranchs - October 2024
How on earth do I always forget that there is an annual day to celebrate sea slugs?!?! A reminder from a diver friend showed me the err of my ways and I just had to compile this video in honor of the nudi-celebration! LOL! Quick compilation of some of the more infrequently seen nudibranchs that were found during our Kawaihae night dive. Even though our treasure hunt focused on finding the macro...
Bait Ball Hunters Bluefin Trevally + Dolphins, Turtles, Frogfish Swimming! Honokohau Delivers Big!
Wowzers! What a morning at Honokohau Harbor! We had so much non-stop action it was one of those ridiculously awesome days of shore diving! We found the bait ball of akule (big eye scad) and there were 50 blue fin trevally's (omilu) cooperatively hunting it. So mesmerizing to watch the akule bob and weave as the jack's plan their attack. Then there was a big group of spinner dolphins frolicking,...
Kona's Best Night Life - Manta Rays - September 2024
Every once in a while, it is nice to humble ourselves and go shore diving with the manta rays off Kona's Coast! These magnificent rays tend to congregate at night in three locations off the coast. Plankton is attracted to the lights in the water from both snorkelers on the surface and scuba divers on the bottom. The abundance of plankton brings the mantas in nice and close looping, swirling, an...
Rare Deep Reef Fish off Kona's Coast - Blueline Triggerfish, Longfin Anthias, Tinker's Butterflyfish
Some fellow fish nerd friends had spotted the rarely seen blueline triggerfish off Kona's Coast! This fish prefers depths of 150-600' and rarely enters up into recreational scuba diving limits, so when it was spotted, we jumped at the chance to go put eyes on it! And what a beauty it is! While we were down deep, we took the opportunity to look around and also spotted a male and female pair of l...
Hawaii's Long-Arm Sand Octopus ~ related to the Mimic Octopus
Seldomly seen, Hawaii's long-arm sand octopus (Thaumoctopus sp.) is related to Indonesia's famous Mimic octopus. This long-arm sand octopus was peeking its eyes out of its burrow and allowed me to slowly approach it. As it grew more confident (I know, I am anthropomorphizing here...) it eventually fully emerged out of its hole and tossed a shell out. I find this species to be much shyer than In...
Diving Through a Classic Kona Lava Tube with a Pregnant Whitetip Reef Shark

Hawaii is known for its underwater volcanic rock formations and this site "Suck 'Em Up", has a classic lava tube with openings at both ends and several sky lights throughout the tube. A quick swim through reveals a pregnant whitetip reef shark resting on the bottom. Bring on more shark pups! Music licensed from Artlist Song: Good Vibe by Alex MakeMusic
The Hairy Octopus - THE Irresistible, Holy Grail Critter of Lembeh, Indonesia
How incredible are the dive guides in Lembeh (particularly at NAD Lembeh)? Well, our dive guide found THE Holy Grail critter - the "Hairy Octopus". I didn't even know this thing existed, so it definitely wasn't on my radar, but oh boy this tiny, pygmy sized dynamite package was a super special treat! It's smaller than a ping-pong ball and was first discovered in the early 2000's so it is still ...
South Kona - Ho'okena Sand Box - Good Day for Nudibranchs and Sea Slugs!

This is a quick little mash up of a morning dive I spent at Ho'okena Beach in South Kona. It was a very productive day out over the sand patch and saw the following species: Melibe megaceras ("Goober") Costasiella formicaria ("Black Sheep") Philinopsis speciosa (Blue-margin headshield slug) Siphopteron quadrispinosum ("Rubber-ducky") Stylocheilus striatus (Lined sea hare) Gymnodoris sp. #11 Cos...
Blackwater Diving for the Diel Vertical Migration ~ Pelagic Magic, Kona 2024
Blackwater diving is essentially "throwing divers off a boat in the dark of night in open ocean waters that are, for all practical purposes, bottomless." Sounds like fun, eh!? So, after the sunset, we ventured 5 miles offshore of Kona to water that was 5,000-7,500 feet deep and drifted aimlessly around to witness the largest animal migration on the planet that occurs every night! This is known ...
Muck Diving the Murky Waters of Kawaihae, Hawaii for Macro Critters
In my perpetual quest for finding unusual, exotic or new critters, I decided to jump into the murkiest and muckiest area of Kawaihae I could find. And it paid off! The Bermudella pellucida sea slug (nudibranch) species we found was another new sighting for Big Island and the Phyllodesmium poindimiei species was new to us. This site definitely had a strong creepy and eerie feel to it, but there ...
The Mimic Octopus ~ imitating lionfish & sea snake + swimming like a flatfish! Sulawesi, Indonesia

Back diving off Lembeh Island in North Sulawesi, Indonesia, our dive guide found several mimic octopus (Thaumoctopus mimicus) for us. These cephalopods are known to "mimic" or impersonate other animals to either evade predators or being stealthy while hunting for prey. In addition to color changing via chromatophores, the mimic octopus can also change its shape and position its arms to resemble...

Love love love this ♥️
Sentient beings. ❤
Amazing!
They're so fascinating and beautiful. I could watch them all day long.
They're so pretty. I absolutely love octopuses. I never thought that I would, but over this last couple of years of watching stories about them and seeing how they are and how smart they are, I just am totally yeah, won over.
God bless so do I I love them and wished they had a longer life span 💕
Unique
Beautiful! Which camera did you use?
Thank you. The video is from an Olympus TG6. The incorporated still shots are from various DSLR/mirrorless cameras.
Looks so cozy in its shell 🐚 ☺️
Wow, this may be one of the coolest dive sites I've ever seen! What an incredible adventure! Hope to get to dive it next time I'm in Kona! Take me there next time? 😅 - Brandon from Monterey :)
Woot woot 🎉 Let’s go! Let me know when you’re planning a trip back and I’ll try to find extra SUPs or yaks for y’all. Conditions have to be perfect though. It’s the longest distance we’ve ever paddled, this site is so remote and isolated!
From the deep blue of the water, to the vibrant colors of life, you captured the essence of Hawaii. Wonderful up close camera work!!!
Thank you so much, appreciate the kind words & glad you enjoyed the video!
Instead of moving out of the house, I'll move the whole house...we should be so lucky😅
Very impressive!
Amazing!
Handy take along home! These are so amazing. So intelligent and beautiful.
Beautiful
Thanks for taking me back to one of my most favorite spots on the island, Pam! ❤ I have always been curious what it looked like down below the surface. Now I kinda know!!!🎉 I came here about 3 to 4 times a week with my Hanai parents' dog, Kaia. They lived very close by to this point. I have some very very dear and beautiful memories of this place. ❤❤❤
So happy to hear that you cherish this place! It's truly a remarkable spot on the island and looking to more adventures and solitude there! It definitely took some time to find the "good areas" to dive, but now that I know where to go, I definitely got to go back. Thanks for sharing your connection to this place!
Very cool (and tense)! I haven't dived with oceanic whitetips, but they're definitely bad news, especially at night. Thanks for sharing!
Oh yea! Definitely stressful dive! Hard to relax trying to find cool macro-critters when your head is on a swivel looking out for OWT!
If white tips show up on night dives with clients are they pulled back closer to the boat?
Generally, yes. If you are on a paid charter, you will be tethered to the boat, so you are automatically already close to the boat. But the general rule from most dive operators is that if an oceanic whitetip shows up the dive is called and everyone starts getting out of the water. It's not often that it happens, but not unheard of either.
That’s mental
I just learned about the turtle cleaning stations today. Lovely to see. Thank you much.
Wonderful! Hope you get to experience a turtle cleaning station in real life one day!
@shoredivingalongthekonacoa6450 Now that would be an experience. 😊
Such a beautiful group of clips! The friend at 1:01 looks like the friendliest fellow 😍 Are those box jellies in the first shot???
Absolutely wonderful and appreciated 🎉🎉
Beautiful! Thanks for you
Trigger fish are fantastic. One of my favorites. And I don’t think I’ve ever seen one of those butterflies. Nice photography.
💚🐙💚
Absolutely stunning photography, and while it's awesome that you're putting the name of the diver / photographer up on the screen, it would be really nice to put the species up there too :-) beautiful video thank you so much❤
Love the video! It was nice seeing you! 🙂

All three were quite beautiful. Thanks for sharing them.
Why is Blackwater Diving only allowed a depth of 60ft if the water is thousands of feet deep
Blackwater dives involve drifting in the currents of the open ocean at night. For safety reasons, commercial charter boat operators will tether divers to the boat so you stay with the boat and so you don’t go too deep. At night, with no reef below you, it can be very disorienting how deep you are and keeping divers at a depth of 60 feet or less minimizes risks of getting lost at sea and/or decompression sickness.
Great soundtrack
Super fascinating animals and stunning footage! Thank you for making this!
Appreciate hearing that you enjoyed it! Aloha!
Great videography. You did a nice job staying on the octopus in the current!
Thanks, its hairdo was really flowing in the current!
My favorite is the Venus girdle.
Beautiful videography! Very thought provoking. Are the colors on some of the creatures iridescence or light?
Thank you! The colors are from bioluminescence, so the creatures can make that lightshow via a chemical reaction inside their body
@@shoredivingalongthekonacoa6450 Thanks for writing back. I've been on night dives with lots of "bugs" in the water, but never seen any bioluminescence. It must be really fascinating. If you feel inclined to make a "how it's done" video of your videography, you'd get at least one view and like. :-)
@@tcoiler The rainbow colors on the ctenophore comb rows are iridescence. But many species can also be bioluminescent.
@@Norwyn Thanks!
I love how they can change colors.
I love everything about them! The coolest cephalopod out there 🙂

This is awesome!
Awesome capture on film
Pretty cool!!! Where was this???
Nice find. Thanks for bringing us along
Thanks for joining!
Great footage, thank you🤿👍
God's perfect creation ❤ Beautiful creatures SO nice to watch this, thank you
You are so beautiful thank you for showing us how beautiful you are🐙🐙❤😊🥰💜💙💚❤
My pleasure!
So the dolphins all bounced when the shark came through??? Was hoping for a stand your ground situation or maybe they make peace or something
The spinner dolphins and tiger sharks make peace ☮ and it's not uncommon to see both species in the same area at the same time.
Yes, the dolphins still play the leaf game, where they "pick up" a leaf that is floating in the water with their pectoral fin and carry it around. When they are done, they pass it along to another dol-friend. Amazing to watch them!
Hey it’s Bryce, we miss you! That shirk looked very angry that he had a hook stuck in his mouth.
Hi Bryce!!! That shark was definitely not having a good day, that hook must hurt like crazy, poor thing. Hope you are doing well, I miss you all!
