  • A group of shore divers dove off Honokohau Harbor and had 2 memorable encounters with "Laverne" one of Kona's most famous tiger sharks.

    It's just amazing that they can go visit her and record her beautiful presence. They are pretty territorial, when I used to work offshore the sharks were very well fed living under the rigs, so when they came to visit, they were attracted to the welding spark when we were working, they were extremely curious but never agressive.

    I have dove there. Wouldn’t have if I had known a tiger shark was there.

      Aloha - there's about 20 resident tigers that make appearances at this dive site. Usually they just make brief appearances and quick flybys. It's quite an experience to view Tigers behaving naturally (i.e. not baited or fed). I hope you had a wonderful dive there!

      Do you mean Honokaa? I'm not familiar with the tigers that frequent the east side of the island, but search for BigIslandTigerSharks.org and you might be able to ID it or submit it for ID and naming privileges!
