That's why I prefer Microsoft Authenticator, they have a cloud back up to move your 2FA to a new device (recovery). I suggest having the app in at least two devices, just in case.

I want to thank you for your videos. Several have been extremely helpful for me including this one. I have a question. I have all my Google 2FA backup codes written down. When I switch phones soon and move all the google authenticators over to the new phone, will my original backup codes be the same with no need to copy them all down again? It's important to note that this method does not work transferring from iOS to Android and vice versa as the QR scripts are ran through the respective format of the phone attempting to export. Also, it's good practice (though less convenient) to have the 2FA codes on a separate device not connected to any networks. Great video in any regards!

So do you believe google authenticator is better left on an old phone that is not in service and just use it because it is safer from being SIM hacked Jacob?
@@Fast_Eddie_ a SIM hack wouldn't compromise GA. Only accounts that use SMS 2FA. Keeping GA on an offline device (no WiFi, no cellular network) significantly reduces the likelihood that the device with the GA 2FA codes is compromised by spyware/other malware.

I'm thinking of getting a new Samsung smartphone, but, I'm reluctant to do so.
And my question is: if I transfer my data to my ''new phone'' can I still use Google authenticator like normal. Or... do I need to do that ''export account''-thing you did?
Google authenticator is a new thing to me, and adapting to this feels hard for me; but I don't want any of my accounts to get hacked so easily, so of course I have to use it …even if it is reluctantly(my mentality of the internet comes from the 2000s where there where no 2FAs and VPNs)

In the latest version of Google Authenticator you cannot take a screenshot (for backup) of the QR codes it exports. It blocks it for security purposes.

Great video, thanks for that. But, tell me, what happens if you don't delete the accounts off the old phone? Do they generate the same numbers and/or can you use either number for the 2FA?
Also, do the 'old' Backup Codes still work or do you need to generate new ones?

What a pain the old way was.....are you able to have two phones with the same codes as a back up? As I noticed you deleted as you exported was that just for ease to pull the next two or 2 phones won't run simultaneously? Thanks professor
