    Yup! It's cool...to watch all those floors of agitation! I think it really doesn't improve on things but sure is fun! I don't understand the quest for the max abv, as if 90-93% isn't good enough? I would not use the extension, just the glass...help keep that height down. Anyway...good for you! and as always, I love the 'scientific' analysis of "is it worth it"...you answered your own question! Keep 'em coming!

    To do a taste test. Add distilled water to sample of your Higher abv and one from a previous run.
    Knock each sample down to 40% then do a smell and taste test.
    I recommend wraping the Silicone gaskets with PTFE "Teflon" tape. It will prevent the silicone gaskets from leeching into your drink.

    3 hours total very nice. I am currently spending 4-5 hours per stripping run but they are easy i just dump it into a large jug. then my final run is a good 8+ hours, this is 3 stripping runs combined then watered down. i am using a alcoengine reflux its slow but i get 90% right through to the tails. I am definitly going to upgrade to a bubbler like you have!

Yesterday i did a spirit run from 3 stripping runs combined then watered down to 40% i had 22 litres of around 38% by my calculation thats over 8 litres of pure alcohol, this into cutting jars would be over 30 jars at 90%. I was filling a jar every 28 minutes which is around 600ml an hour it was a full day and i gave up at 7pm (starting at 6am) the last jar i extracted was still 90%

    I have a similar setup to yourself, 50L keg, 10 bubble plates, no other column add-ons barring a 300mm twin helix coil condenser at the top where you have a deflag, there's no need for column balancing as each plate heats from the bottom up, no real need to wrap your keg either, once your head is at the desired temp start drawing the for-shots off, I have 0.34L p/m of water through the coil condenser, which gives me approx 450ml of product per 20 ish mins and I get 95-96% every run, hope this helps.

      I already had the extra bubble plated column, so it was working reasonably well. If I had got some Springs/Rings, and I’m not saying they don’t work, but in my situation it wouldn’t have given me much of an advantage using them. • @highly-spirited
      @highly-spirited  2 года назад

      That’s a tricky one to answer, as there’s many factors involved that can cause different end results (temperature of Run, Equipment, abv of Wash, etc.).
      But I would say for an average Run my set up, with a 20 litre Sugar Wash @ 10% abv, I would be looking at 150ml Foreshots, 150-200ml Heads, 2-3 litres of Hearts (93% abv) and Tails (sometime I don’t even collect) 300-400ml. But, again, please don’t take those figures as exact measurements, but it gives you an idea.

    I got a T500 reflux still and boiler hold 30l and I use the exact bubble plate as you but have 4 plates with a slow dip and I get 96% abv. I collect 250mls head/foreheads down the drain I keep my tails for next run and use turbo yeast classic 8 I never experienced to ever go below 96% I dont know why your getting less abv or inpurities. Huh!! My taste is amazing and smells amazing. Guessing we run it differently or your temperature is way to high and getting more water in it. Try and run it slower I noticed its way too fast like you said. It takes me from start to finish 5hrs running it I use a parrot , Taking cuts too much hard work and I'm lazy lol 🤣. But even if I run it faster then yours on my T500 still get 96% abv with 4% water..no nasty impurities taste/smell ever it don't make sense to me. Without the bubble plate kit I would have to run it and get 92% max and impurities was absolutely nasty/smells. I use PURE turbo yeast for white spirits and turbo CLASSIC 8 for darker spirits. Or sometimes classic 8 or both don't see the difference. Classic 8 takes me 4 days to stop from SG 1075 to 990 and pops like crazy then the pure turbo yeast that takes 7/8 days.
    1) 7kg dextrose/glucoses ( granulated sugar is the one that makes you have nasty impurities don't use it )
    teaspoon of Young's yeast nutrition's. ( If I don't put this extra spoon it I get eggy stressed out yeast and boy it stinks for days 🤣 turbo missed this extra spoon out in the package ) never use charcoal or a+b packs just turbo yeast ONLY.
    Pitch yeast in between 24c/30c don't listen to packet full of rubbish at 30c yeast start 🤣🤣🤣
    Classic 8 4 days 1075 to 990
    Pure yeast 7/8 days 1075 to 990
    You only need 1-4 bubble plates yours is a overkill and works the same with just one plate and still get 96%
    buy a 240v voltage speed controller and plug the boiler into it so you can increase/decrease the boiling before you hit the condenser and balance it on the last floor before it hits the condenser for 20mins/30mins then turn it up go to make alcohol. I have only been stilling 6 months just plenty of research 👍👍👍

      Wow, what a comment and I thank you for taking the time to post it! There’s loads of points and I’ll try my best to reply.
      I found adding faints to a subsequent Run, makes the distillate normally a little higher abv of the final product. And like you say, keeping the takeoff really slow also helps to get high abv. But I’m not too worried about that. As long as it works, and I’m happy, then that is all that matters.
      I don’t think I’ve ever distilled (pot or reflux) and not found a distinct foreshot, heads, hearts and tails. So I’m not sure how you never detect them, even with a sugar wash.
      I’m not sure my bubble plates are overkill. Whether people use mesh, Raschig rings, plates etc. it’s all about making a purer final product and not all about getting the highest abv possible. Plus I find the more you use, the more it condenses the cuts. We’re all on a journey, how we get there is our own choice 😊
      Thanks again for the detailed comment 😎 👍

    Ok so a question for you to maybe test.
    You stated that your abv went up but take off rate didn't .
    If you dial back your reflux does your rate increase in speed
    So lets say 90% with 4 plates vs 90% with 8 plates is there a difference in speed ?
    Reason I ask is I'm thinking of filling my bubble plates with saddles to increase my speed (still leaving the plates in place just stacking saddles on top) what are your thoughts ?
    (I had written this previously but you tube has magically deleted my comment so if another version of this question exists somewhere that's why lol)

    • @highly-spirited
      @highly-spirited  2 года назад

      Right let’s start by me saying I’m an idiot when it comes to this hobby, so don’t listen to anything I say. Now that’s out of the way, let me begin 😂
      When Distilling, there’s a few factors that interact with each other, and you already know what they are. So would say, that the abv is mostly relevant to how quick your take off rate is. By that I mean, packing in the column only ever makes the product a higher proof (with more concentrated Cuts) at the same take off rate, and increasing that rate (more temp or less reflux) with a packed column would only ever lower the abv. A greater column diameter would possibly be more of an advantage if faster take off rate was the soul purpose.
      So it’s still a case of swings and roundabouts…….I think. As I actually don’t do a great deal of this (please reference back to my first sentence for confirmation 😆)

      Glad you’re enjoying my simple efforts 😊 When it comes to Distilling I don’t really know what I’m doing, I’m just sharing my experiences in these vids.
      When I added the extra bubble plate extension piece (effectively doubling what I already had) only the abv went up a little. But as for taste, there was no difference at all. And I can’t say it really changed things a great deal in any way at all. And that even goes for the take off rate as well.
      If I’m honest, for myself, it wasn’t really worth the extra cost. But it does look cool having multiple plates bubbling a way, doesn’t it 😎
      It would sound as if I was splitting hairs to try and justify the benefits.
      Great piece of kit you’ve got there. It should be more than up to the job without spending more or getting caught in that ‘mines bigger than yours’ scenario or chasing the highest abv known to man. It’s up to you at the end of the day. Run it a load of times and get used to it, then see if there’s anything you want to change on it, would be my thoughts.
