One Punch Man - S2 VS S1 Animation Comparison

- So I was getting annoyed by people not being able of differentiating ANIMATION and ART STYLE.
Also don't claim that "MaDhOuse WoUldA GivEN uS jUstIcE".
While the studio was Madhouse, most of the staff that made the magic aren't primarily Madhouse core members.
Imo this is a poor comparison. This scene you choose from s1 was ment to look super pretty. Also, power scaling continues for genos that's why they're so quick in s2. There were tons of scenes that looked great in s2 just as s1 had. Blizzard 1st esp scene, garou vs tank top, garou vs hero gank, garou vs bang, tournament vs monsters, genos vs g4, etc. Everyone is hating big time for no reason, that at this point, it feel like it's just a wave that people are following just so they feel as they have the same opinion as others.
Pretty much every scene from S1 is meant to look pretty. S2 animation looks like toei animes
What's the point in making an anime that doesn't look pretty. S1 animation never dipped below the scene he showed even in regular shots with no fighting. Watching a S2 fight isn't horrible how people make it out to be. But the flashing screen and blurred out effects aren't appealing to watch. Like at all. Especially if S1 had animation like what was shown. So yeah alot of people over exaggerate S2 as if it sucks and it doesn't but the animation took a backstep (just my opinion tho)
@@kyngtruccie8817 you see, I wasn't going to bother replying at all, since I didn't want to bother trying to explain something that you can put together with a little thought. But, as more reply with the same response, I can only expect more to come so I'll just try and help settle this right now. As for as to what you said, no not every scene looked nearly as great at this scene's cinematography and choreography. This scene was to be exceptionally beautiful to show off the 2 main protagonist. Its between student and teacher, the vast power difference between them. The only scene that come comes is saitama vs boros in s1.
Now, If you search up that fight in youtube the first 15 or so seconds you can see how 'poorly animated' saitama is while dodging boros attacks. I said poorly animated in quotes because it's not actually half-assed it's just they're too op and above what was displayed earlier (moving super fast). Similar to how genos was super fast in the s2 scene displayed in this video comparison. If you look at genos vs g4 (s2), where g4 is a more normal opponent, you can see how well it got animated. Like how genos effortlessly flips through the air and strikes the final blow.
Like I said, each season has it's up and downs. S2 might have a little more in matters of opinions, but it is not as bad as yall are making it to be.
@@Zombone476 I don't think you understand anything about animation if you unironically believe what you just said.
@@valazor2668 I dont, and in the end this was all started on my opinion. Also, you saying something that bluntly without with no explanation to your reasoning is kind of off putting. You don't even bother trying to explain what you're stating.
The main thing I don't like anymore is that characters no longer move fast. They teleport instead which just looks lazy in comparison to S1. And genos is FAR too shiny.
Jake Baxter 0:56 they don’t move too fast ? It looks like teleportation because they are going way faster than before and Genos doesn’t look shiny lol he looks normal
@@lookherelooklisten7850 He does look a bit shiny. I noticed it the very moment he first appeared in that season.
@@lookherelooklisten7850 stop being a fanboy. There are many form to represent fast movement and we both know the chose this one (teleport) because it's easier to draw.
If this "teleporting speed" you told us about really exists, then Genos is faster than Boros at this point.
Chuck Morris who said “ teleporting speed” ? I just said that he moves at a speed that for us a normal person it looks like teleportation when is just him moving fast, we even see this with sonic, how can you not understand that he is just moving faster than last season which makes it look like teleportation? And how am I a fanboy if I’m just talking about common sense in speed ?
@@lookherelooklisten7850 like I said, this is a lazy way to represent high speed if used constantly.
The biggest difference between s1 and s2 is that you can actually see fights in s1

@★ Froggie Animation ★ aint yo momma to do it. If you want to be a fanboy be a fanboy season 1 had flaws like poor detailization and overusing of same frames due to budget limits regardless of your opinion. However those flaws were not critical and they didnt stop me from enjoying S1.
Season 1 was godlike yes it's still has the stupid still frames etc... but when it came to fights I haven't seen anything rival it in terms of the fluidity of the characters movements down to the tiny detail, the way they contort and move their entire bodies when attacking, like you would in real life I haven't seen anything close to it.
All the good animations of s2 are ruined by the blur effect

Season 3 - hopefully both.
The story was better in Season 1 by far. It had more Saitama in it, and was just funny.
@@TehLemonsRUs most people preferred season 2 story. But season 1 animation was far better for me. Hopefully, season 3 focuses on both animation and story aspect. I dont want then to sacrifice one aspect for the other.
@@neox4297ets just hope madhouse would take it again and actually MAKE ANOTHER SEASON?
Not gonna lie the director kinda butchered the story for me in s2
OPM started out primarily as a gag so the initial storyline is barebone simple and straight forward.
Season 1 follows the episodic "monster-of-week" format. Every episode (or tw) is their own contained independent storyline.
They try to squeeze as much over the top moment and humor as possible in every episodes.
Season 2 is like your average run-of-the-mill shounen anime with long story-arcs that they drag for as long as they can (thus creating a lot of dull and boring moments) and then finished it off with short, unsatisfying, and anti-climatic finisher.
Yes season 2 has a more structured storyline and probably a more involved plot (which for some people count as a "better story"), but it is presented in a very dull, drag out manner.

Ok that’s harsh. It’s not like it’s Black Clover levels of bad art and animation, this really isn’t THAT bad, it’s just nowhere near Season 1. It’s rushed and it shows, but it could be WAY worse...
the new series isnt even Animation, its just still frames with blur effects.
He is half right though, the use of blur is fucking egregious throughout s2, it's like they don't want you see what's happening on screen.
Episode 3 has proven though that they can deliver if they need to. Garou vs Tanktop master was pretty on point, S1 Staff and it's phenomenal free lancers couldn't have done a much better job than that. Aside from some hiccups in the Garou vs Metal bat fight such as changing the FWRC parry&backhand to a lousy dodge and flimsy cross and that absolutely horrendous snapshot of Garou repelling/redirecting MB's final Tornado move with the Hadouken/kamehameha dual palm strike motion, it was fine as well.
That being said part of me really would have liked to see what the Flowing Water Rock Smashing/Crushing Fist would have looked like in Season 1, what pissed me off more than anything was that they had Bang take Genos and escape after Saitama destroyed that Meteor, instead of using his phenomenal skills to fricking redirect the resulting debris coming for them, so if you want your one instance where Madhouse decided to cut corners and take the easy route, this was it, and even in the Dark Matter Alien Pirates confrontation, there was no instance of Bang showing off his Martial arts skills proper, which they rectified and will hopefully keep doing in Season 2.
All in all, S1 is a lot more fluid, creative, lively and ofc thanks to more frames, easier to follow and digest.
S2 does unfortunately cut corners here and there and not go beyond much of what the phenomenal manga version, by the genius artist himself Murata, provides, but the snappy and very abrupt and flashy pacing is ironically enough more realistic, if you can believe it or not, for me it's an refreshing change of pace compared to most animation standarts. Like it feels to me more like watching a real fight, be that boxing, mma matches etc, often times you will not see or notice most attacks until their follow through or like you said as a blur, or if you rewatch them and keep your eyes out for them and focussed on those.
For example, I urge you to rewatch some of the more popular fight scenes in Dragon ball (excluding movies ofc) and compare them to any fight in both Seasons of Opm, the grand majority looks like absolute shite and an insult to the timing, technique, pacing and rhythm of any martial arts. It's really funny and scary what nostalgia goggles, preconceptions and bias can do to the perception and the ability of people to judge art and media fairly.
2:07 This actually looks like a really good frame in general but I CAN'T EVEN SEE IT BECAUSE OF THE VIGOROUS SHAKEY CAMERA
In general, s2's animation is average with some duwang moments and some occasional good looking moments

Saitama very rarely does the flurry of blows
Your right, that's the only thing that was actually animated instead of still frames.
Genos doing machine gun blow is not new. Saitama only did it vs the beast king and vs boros, neither of which genos was around to see
With JC, you can barely see what's going on. Everything blurry and blinding, and when it comes to movement they just erase Genos and draws him again. With Madhouse, you can actually see movement. All the way down to Genos wriggle his fingers to clutch his fist. Madhouse doesn't rely on CG (and if they I can hardly tell). They don't use cheap techniques make thing blinding to trick you to think something epic happening. This video needs to be seen by everybody. JC is definitely worst.

All three battles with Kenbu were

idk if its just me but with season 2 sometimes the sound just feels like base boost x100, even when its not really that necessary. And the punch sound effects are also not there at times.
get used to it, it's the new anime fashion, even football anime uses it (Captain Tsubasa 2018).
@@aguzzic its fukin annoying hearing the same disturbing sound in every motion
Uh, the sound overall seems strange in S2, some times the voices don't seem to "fit" in a scene, like you hear that its a recorded voice in a studio. Its like the audio mixer didn't do his job at all
yeah i thought the same. overused sound like in any motion they made
I like that, makes the explosive sounds Abit more realistic imo
Madhouse have the in between of a character going from pose A to pose B, audiences can see every action in the transition. JC Staff kinda go from pose A to B without anything between. Theres a big difference in how much animation is used to convey movement.
1:39 idk why but this is my favourite scene in the whole anime in both season till now
That saitama vs genos fight is honestly one of the flashiest and best animated scenes I’ve watched, it’s difficult to compare it to season 2 with anything
Its imposible to reach the quality of Season 1 and no, Mad House ins not the reason S1 is gorgeus, it Was thanks to Shingo natsume, the director of the Season 1 of OPM, he has like a ton of contacts in the industry so What he do Was gathered the Best freelancer animators and the Best Animators From differents studios and were this animators that did the wonderful S1, so it doesnt matter if Mad House continues the anime, If shingo natsume is not envolved in this no studio Will be capable of the Same quality of season 1, maybe Bones could do it but they had already a lot of project going on
Daniel Zaldivar I think Bones can reach that quality, I think Mob Pyscho was just as good as OPM in the animation department
@@emreozerdem8509 yes they can indeed a lot of the animators From season 1 of opm were From Bones, but i seet quite dificult, right now Bones had big animes like BNH but if someday happen it would be beautiful
This thing of not reaching the quality of season 1 is quite a bullshit. It's not that C.J. staff are not reaching the quality of season 1, it's more that they are not reaching the quality of dragonball super in animation, and this, this is a 12 episode serie's.
The drawn are not that bad, but still they need to use cgi in some parts, in some fight you don't really understand what is going on, static animation plus cgi plus literally lack of frames.
@@Lord_Great_Popo this, thats the thing, we are no talking about something like DB super that didnt have source material and everything Was written and produce on the go, JC staff had a year of planning and organization, pre production and a very detailed Source material thanks to murata and his increíble drawings.

Damn JC Staff has to really step it up
Sanga Ralte apparently Mad House artists were actually volunteers to animate One Punch Man s1, so it’s pretty crazy how much rien they put even tho they didn’t get paid or barely did get paid
While I agree that s2 has bad animation compared to s1, saying that the animators did not put their heart and passion into it is a really offensive thing to say to those people. Criticism of their artwork is fine, criticising their motivation and passion isn't. They dreamt to become animators, worked their ass off in a industry which treats them like shit and they finally became one. Jc stuff does decent anime but they're mostly slice of life or romcoms, expecting them to maintain the godly standards set by madhouse is plain foolish
Pratik Dev we are looking something that's passionate in it's artwork. Something that can withstand the original manga like Madhouse made and not some rush artwork that's JC Staff made (copying the original manga or make it worst).
Try this animator doing solo making the fight scene of Saitama and Suiryu, ruclips.net/video/rkY6bFt5UkY/видео.html, and for me he's more passionate than the JC Staff Team's artwork.
Well this is blowing up for some reason. Keep in mind that.
1. This video was made when S2 only had two episodes in.
2. I might try making another comparison if I see/remember anything worth paralleling in. But I haven't properly caught up to the new episodes recently cause of school.
Edit: Lot of people are asking me to do a follow up which I might if
1. There's enough similarities between one fight in this season and the previous season.

I wouldn't call them bad, just .. different. But the reason for that is that the Sound FX Director is the same one that did the FX on Berseker.
acktually aintaddingup if sarcasm, yea, if you actually mean it, hell no, explosives, yea solid 10/10, anything else apart from explosions, ehhh, 4/10. Sounds like a 90s anime sfx, yet there are modern sfx along the way. Even 90s anime had better sounding sfx despite lower quality in audio
Yeahh. That scene where Metal Bat hit his head with his metal bat, there was no fucking metal sound!
I'm also thinking that there are too many side effects in s2 so you can't really see the "real" animation quality. As an example: when genos charges his incineration cannon.
Edit: But tbh I still like the new artstyle, even if it won't come close to s1 at least at the moment.
1:47 Probably the only decently animated bit in this video regarding Season 2

Mad House are known for their awesome animation especially the battle scene, but they are also rarely do multiple seasons per anime, except for overlord and black lagoon (I think), which is kinda wierd, I mean if your anime makes a lot of money, you probably want to do another one,..
I loved the S1 fights because you can actually tell whats going on and it looks fantastic but S2 they went wayyy overboard with the shaky cam and the blur
Even without looking at the comparison, the difference in animation is already obvious🗿
I feel like One-Punch Man Season 2 is like the opposite of Game of Thrones Season 8. Good writing and subpar visuals vs subpar (understatement) writing with good visuals.
Well they are skipping a bit just like how the GoT writers made shortcuts. The difference is OPM writers stayed true to the story whereas D&D just made some shit fan-fiction garbage.
Jeffrey S they had no choice tho. Not an excuse for it being bad, but if you agreed to a massive decade long production based on a book series, with one of the agreements being the series would be finished by the time the show was ready to end, you’d probably check out too.
If GRRM has done his job, maybe D&D stay on for longer and focus harder. They clearly didn’t give a shit the last couple seasons though
@@Te_LaSoul that agreement was bullshit. They literally compacted multiple seasons worth of material together, it only became horribly noticeable around season 7 and reached the peak at 8. GRRM had the choice to sell out and let them butcher his story or stoop to their level and rush the book he was working on to release it in time.
Just read the manga, the art is incredible
Jeffrey S yeah but i relent reports that HBO was originally interested in 10 seasons? And D&D said no? I think if they had decided not to compact so much, we’d still be using book material. Some of the decisions were weird. Like killing Barristan
I think they exchanged animation over sound design, the sounds had more impact and you tell that every move they make is powerful, but it DOESNT LOOK powerful, it just sounds powerful.

- the color scheme is ugly and face skin tones look more like Donald Trump aka orange
- horrible storyboard in the opening
- one of the most important staff members gets fired after sabotaging works on this season because he doesn't like ONE's works
- and more
Of course, there are good things with about this season, but it's not what you asked me to list
I would say that season 2 is a failure because of a lot of bad decisions, not bad intentions. We should mostly blame the rights owner who rushed anime adaptation because they couldn't find any studio for 4 years so they took the fastest options which is JC Staff. This studio is the animation machine who produces 10 anime a year, whether its good or not. Also, the choice of the main staff is weird. Very inexperienced director etc. We don't even know who animates this season except for Kenichiro Aoki who's saving this season so far from a bigger disaster. Also, there's another animator in the staff that is worth mentioning (we don't know his name tho). He animated Tanktop Tackle scene. I just hope that episode 4 will keep episode's 3 quality and in the blu-ray edition, the will get rid of technical things that I listed above (like shading etc.).

@David They were far too busy, so we would be waiting another few years for a second season, and at that point who would really care?

To be fair, I wouldn't be super motivated to work if I was under the conditions of anime staff, despite how much I enjoyed it. The animators for the first season should have earned way more pay than what they were getting.
@David except attack on titan season 2 had 1/4 the viewership season 1 did... So obviously a long wait was very very bad, even if the quality was just as good
I dont gonna defend jc staff but you need to research more, yes the budget Was low for the 2 but the difenrence is that S1 Was directed by Shingo natsume, that dude is the god of contacts in japan, and What he do Was to get help From the Best freelancer animators From japan like Yutaka nakamura one of the Best Animators From Bones, indeed Mad House did like nothing, All Was thanks to Shingo natsume
The style in S2 is very nice, of course it would have been cooler if they had animated it.
i mean lets be honest here they really tried their best. opm season 1 had an amazing cast of all the most well-known animator in the industry they all came together to do a project and things like that happen rarely, its not about which studio is animating it, its about what staff is working on it. Opm season 1 Is something that should be cherished and be loved that something like that exist and we got to witness it.
It isnt just the animation, the sound effects also lack that "snap" to them. Every click, fwoosh, bang, all feel so floaty in s2. In s1 you could REALLY feel when genos tried to incinerate saitama, that super speed kick, everything. I knew it was gonna be sub par with the animation, but it like they didn't even try half the time with everything else...
Can’t really tell how Genos got an “upgrade” in season 2. If anything it looks like he just go repaired with some spare parts
