The 9/11 terrorist attacks can't affect Gen Z so 1999 are definitely millennial because you had a two-year-old who died on 9/11, her name was Christine Lee Hanson. I wouldn't say most two-year-olds remember the attack but 2 year olds can remember traumatic events like 9/11 depending on how your family was acting that day because some families were panicking

True zillennial culture is being told you're a millennial all your life then suddenly in your early adulthood being told you're actually gen z. But discovering neither side thinks you're a part of them. I was born in 99, when I mentioned being gen z to my cousins (who are like 2 and 4 years younger) they laughed in my face, saying I was definitely a millennial. All my young millennial friends Talk about me being a baby gen z. My mom swears I'm a millennial lmao. I gave up. My life isn't hinged on my generation

I was born I 2000 and I relate to a lot of what you said here. I was told that I was a millennial up until I started college.
When I started college, everyone started saying that we were apart of this new generation that can't remember life before smartphones.
Up until recently, I had a lot of generational confusion because I didn't feel like I fit in with Gen Z or Millennials. Most people also said that I wasn't a Zillennial either.
However, I truly believe that I am a Zillennial now. This video perfectly described my generational experience.
Regardless, you are totally right about life not being hinged on your generation. It really doesn't mean anything important.

Proud Zillennial/cusper here. Born in 1996. My childhood years felt more Millennial in the 00's and my teen years felt slightly more Gen Z in the early 10's but not in the same way current Gen Z culture has become. I feel like my teen years were smack bang in that limbo period between Millennial and Gen Z in the early 10's and thus I struggle to fully relate to either generation, which is why I'm a proud Zillennial. :)

We were the first kids to have to navigate Middle school and high school with the constant stream through out our whole day of news, school drama, internet memes, viral dances, etc. Which makes us relate heavily with zoomers however a lot of us remember a time before that where we could come home from school and not be connected to the internet like older millennials. Born in 2001, I consider my birthyear to be the last of the Zillennial cusp. I draw the line because we graduated before the pandemic and had some adult experience in a pre-COVID world (it makes a big difference, the world may be open again but people are far less friendly than they were in 2019). Our childhoods were shaped both by pop culture trends in traditional media and online media, but we remember a world before social media. We were the last group to not have to worry about our parents putting our baby photos on the internet for all to see (my parents wouldn't have done that anyway, but I mean as a general trend).

It is bothering me that Zillenial goes until '99 for many. I was born in '01 (in Germany) and had an relatively internet-free childhood, I played outside, I watched films on VHS, our camera also went on VHS, I had my first mobile phone when I was around 10 years old and it was a button phone. I can remember renting films in the video store, etc. The outfits and music were all more 90s. In addition, I was always in the same class with people who were born in '99, '00 and '01, which is why the way we behaved and how we were perceived back then was the same. I grew up like my brother, who was born in '98. Even with people after 2002-2003, I can no longer identify myself. It's a strange feeling not to be understood that I'm not a clear Gen-Z. My way of life is Gen-Y but my year of birth is more Gen-Z? For '97 - '01 maybe also '02 there should be a generation of its own. If you were born in these years, you understand that the children from 2003 or maybe only from 2004 behave differently than people who were born before.

There are certain years that when people do identify with it I would say there is no doubt they are, but outside of that, I don't want to tell anyone they are or are not a Zillennial (maybe if they are from way outside of the suggested ranges).
One thing to note is that people in certain years are grouped into the Millennial generation OR Generation Z but year ranges vary and it depends on where you look. ive always noticed that theres this micro/cusp going on because even though my sibling is only 2 years younger than me and we are both "gen z" there's this huge discrepancy on what we identify with and relate to in this regard.
I would still consider myself an early gen z even though i relate to almost all of the points being brought up in the video because even in the zillenial bubble i would be on the young side. There are just a few things I remember being different about the class only a year or two above mine.
I find it hard to identify with the core gen z (14-18) in terms of social media usage but i find it even harder to relate to proper core millennials.
Pretty strange how rapid society is changing that we are seeing this ripple effect in real time of worldview and experiences.

    • @Juli-zg7sj
      @Juli-zg7sj 3 года назад +1

@@TheGenerations1 Hi! Thanks for your question. I actually think it’s quite interesting how small things can make such a difference. I will be using my sibling as a primary example but will be keeping in mind the differences I observed between both of our friend groups and classmates as well. For context, my sibling has just become a legal adult and I am only a few months away from the drinking age in the US. I no longer live in the states and have been able to legally drink for 5 years now, whereas my sibling has not left.
The biggest thing I feel is that we had a very different experience with technology as a whole.
I can clearly remember a time in our childhood that we used VHS, Cassette tapes, CD’s, a CRT TV and had limited time on a desktop computer (only educational games). These memories are mostly from a time before we moved (2006) when I was 6 and they were 4, which are not clear to my sibling at all. Tech advanced drastically as we (our parents) shifted to DVD/Blu-Ray, Smart phones, flat screens, laptops, iPods/iTunes and received our first consoles (Wii and PS2). I was watching (2008-2016) Kim Possible, SpongeBob, ATLA, Drake & Josh, H2O, Sweet Life of Zack and Cody and On Deck but also iCarly, Phineas and Ferb, Adventure Time , Steven Universe, Supernatural, Sherlock, South Park and Big Bang Theory. I was reading (2010-2014) Divergent, Maze Runner, Percy Jackson, Eragon, Hunger Games, and had gotten into online public writing forums like Wattpad by 2014.
I received my first phone in middle school, a Samsung with a slide keyboard, to communicate to our parents as I was going to a school farther away for the 1st time. My sibling only received their 1st phone starting middle school as well. By that time, most people had a smartphone, Vine was brand new, Instagram was exploding, Facebook had been around for a decade, and Twitter and Snapchat were not far behind the others. RUclips was beginning to be accepted as a job.
My sibling got an iPhone 6 and I upgraded to a Galaxy S5 (2013-2014), but our parents discouraged social media use. I believe that my personal reluctance to engage in social media as I moved into HS strengthened the feelings of disconnect between myself and my siblings age group.
Nowadays, most people my age that I know are less likely to use TikTok and Snapchat but rather Twitter and Reddit. TikTok only became popular after I had already left for university. Both age groups are on the internet almost constantly, the definitely use Instagram and RUclips, possibly Discord, and have very similar tastes in music. Neither use Facebook if only to have a page for University. I personally do not have, TikTok or Twitter and rarely use anything other than YT. I use IG and Snap for communication with friends and do not post.
Outside of tech, the social norms amongst teens changed drastically between 2014 and 2016.
The year I entered High School vs. The year my sibling did. Vaping had become a social norm, recreational use of cannabis in my state was legalized, Kpop broke into the global sphere, the 2016 election occurred and political division was apparent.
This was what my sibling started their HS experience with and I believe it made a significant difference. The pandemic destroyed my sibling’s Senior year of HS and Freshman year of college, whereas it is affecting my internships, job prospects and my final year of Uni. I have to enter the job market in August. My sibling will finally be able to live on campus (they were unable to move out of our parents house), experience college life and have an Uni class in person.
This difference feels staggering to me but please let me know what you think.
I feel so old and so young at the same time. A cusp of a cusp. 😂

I was born in 2000 and I definitely consider myself a zillenial. My childhood was in the 2000s and I had the quintessential zillenial 2000s experience. We are constantly grouped with people born in like 2006 for example even though they barely even remember the 2000s. They had their childhood in the 2010s while I entered elementary school in 2005 before they where even born and I am a 2000s kid, it is a stark contrast in terms of experiences. My first vague memories where from late 2002 so I can also remember the early 2000s. It kinda pisses me off that we are gatekept by neckbeards on reddit sometimes just for being born in 00. They will even say things like "1999 is pure zillenial while 2000 is pure Z" -_-. they act like we grew up drastically different from someone born in 1998 or 1999 which is just ridiculous. We literally grew up with the same exact things. We fall into the gen z/y cusp as well since cuspers are typically born 3 years before a generation and 3 years after I think right? The pew research gen z range and almost all other gen z ranges start gen z in 1997 so the cusp would include those born between 1997-2000. Plus before gen z became a thing the millennial range used to include 2000 and I was told I was a millennial while growing up. The U.S census still classifies me as a millennial too. We have all the zillenial traits like being born under clinton, born in the 20th century, we became teens in the early 2010s and graduated H.S in the 2010s, we where all alive when 9/11 occured, etc... Sure I can't remember 9/11 but I was still alive and walking when it happened. Most late 90s babies can't remember it either. Regardless of what labels people put on us I am a zillenial and proud Y2K baby, I love my birth year and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

I definitely relate to this, being born in late '95. The defining feature of millennials is that they came of age or joined college / the workforce right around the height of the 2008 recession, but I was still in middle school at the time and only experienced it through the anxieties of my parents as they saw their income lowered during those years. However, I also ended up going to an expensive private college and struggled to get a career in the field I studied which also seems to be the millennial experience whereas Gen Z seems to be more cautious of going to college or do it cheaper. I grew up on Kim Possible and know what her beeper tone was even though I didn't fully understand what a "beeper" or pager was until later in life. I also knew of dial-up but didn't grow up on it. I also grew up with a corded wall phone in the house and didn't get my first cell phone (an LG Chocolate slide out keyboard) until 7th grade and didn't get my first smartphone until early mid-high school.

This is such a great, thorough video for 13 mins. I love how you touched on the recession and other factors such as geography and age differences. I was born in 1993. My parents were hurt terribly by the recession. They brought their house right when the recession hit, they both lost their jobs, and we lost insurance. Money was really tight and I remember there was always constant worry about gas prices. I remember going without new clothes and not as much food. I graduated in 2011 in San Francisco. The economy was still pretty rough but I was in San Francisco and it was, and still is absolutely terrible out there. I struggled until 2015. The only reason why things got better is because I moved out of the Bay Area.

I'm a Zillennial, however it's frustrating when people ask me whether I'm a Millennial or a Gen Z, if I tell them I'm a Zillennial they wouldn't even know what that is. So it's hard for me to answer that. If we go by age I might fall into the Millennial category (born in mid 94) but if we go by experiences I'd consider myself a Gen Z, I relate way more to Gen Z than I do to Millennials. In 2021 when people think of Millennials they think of someone in their 30s and Gen Z in their 20s.. being in my mid 20s makes it so hard. I really wish the term Zillennial was more popular and official since there are many of us. I'd say anyone born between 93 and 99 could fall into this category. It's so hard because if you try to be a Millennial you can easily be invalidated for stuff like not having memories from the 90s, not knowing 90s or early 2000s pop culture or not remembering 9/11 but then again if you try to be a Gen Z they can invalidate you for being "too old", for not using tik tok as much or for wearing skinny jeans. You know? it's like we are a whole different generation.

1995 born, I identify more with being a cusper than a millennial. I remember 9/11 mainly because we got sent home early from school and I just thought it was strange because all my mother told me was that some bad guys did something in New York and we live in western Canada.... Didn't make much sense at the time. We had computers and dial up internet in my house because my dad's always been an early adopter of different tech, no matter what it is. That sound will forever be engrained in my memory. I even remember ALWAYS having a computer in my room starting at maybe 4 years old, I just never used it because I didn't really know how and thought it was boring. I was probably 9 or 10 before I really started getting into computers, had a Myspace, Nexopia account, used to play Runescape, Habbo Hotel and Neopets. My first phone was a Samsung flip at 13/14 but I only had one friend with one so I'd find out where everyone was by calling their house and asking their parents, or just biking around until I found the house with all my friends bikes out front. Facebook was the dumbest thing ever and I hated it, my parents actually got on it first. We were the first class at my middle school to be issued laptops by the school district... yeah that only lasted one year, everyday there was always some kid with a broken laptop that they dropped down the stairs or something, they ended that program and I don't think they've given kids laptops ever since. Used to be on Tumblr when it was good, Snapchat came out when I was still in high school but I didn't sign up for it until I was maybe 18 just because no one I knew was on it yet. A lot of my "millennial" peers are either settling in to a career or marriage by now which I'm not ready for and my "gen z" friends are busy doing TikTok challenges and partying every night which I just don't understand (The tiktok part atleast, the partying stuff I'm just over with by now). This is a weird ass generation to be part of.

Enjoy the random dude's memory of 9/11/01, and some random crap at the end. I am relating to everything you said its absolutely insane. like we're the ham in between a sandwich bread slices.
I have a weird hazy, kind of nostalgic memory of 9/11 I think Is the best way to describe it? I just turned 6, 2 days before. I'm from europe so I had finished school and it was still in the morning in the US when they struck the towers, So I was vibing watching dragon ball in the living room/kitchen on this small ass CRT 15" Grundig TV around 3pm, having arrived straight from school. then I heard the neighbour shouting to us and others in our street that a plane crashed in a skyscraper in the US, and to check the news. my mum rushed and changed the channel from FoxKids or what it was to the National news, I remember being so upset and bitching to change it back, I was told to zip it and behave or no playing spyro the dragon after haha. That was live and only the first plane hit. my grandma and uncle were at the house and everyone was like jesus, whoah oh my god, poor people, what a tragic accident, grandma prayed and was worried but didn't know why... anyways we watched for a few mins, I kept bitching to watch dragon ball and as soon as they were about to change it back, the 2nd plane hit. everyone just froze, grandma started crying and my uncle said something along the lines of Holy fucking jesus donkey ass balls christ in my language. and everyone stared at the TV and grandma was sobbing. I remember jumping on the kitchen counter to change the channel myself as I didn't want to see her cry. mum grabbed me and put me on the sofa told me to play on the PS1 in the other room, my uncle came over said sorry for swearing and not being able to watch dragon ball, and that can be replayed. and what was happening was a serious thing that was gonna be a historic event and as it was live they had to watch it. I remember just sitting there watching it for an hour or more, then dad came home, came to the kitchen, saw everyone glued to the tv and jokingly said "uhh, did aliens invade US or something?" Having watched indipendence day the night before, The thing I remember most is him go from calm to full on panicking when grandma reminded him her brother was there. He frantically searched to find the number and call his uncle. he emigrated in the 70's to live in NYC, couldn't reach him for hours. Grandma was panicked and it was one of the like 3 times I saw my dad straight up concerned and anxious, the other was when grandpa had a heart attack and died a few years later and when my brother was shot in the hip during the 2011 arab spring uprising after being deployed in libya as part of some nato task force during gaddafi final days. anyways went off topic lol, one memory led to another and im just writing what comes to mind, my bro's alive thankfully. anyways, Cuspers like us that saw society change drastically and forever with technology and the internet becoming a thing. I remember MSN Live or IRC, Tamagochi, Nokia 3310, the motorola razr I think it was, the shitty dial up internet taking 3 days to download games, movies and other shit from ****very legal websites***, playing outside and riding bikes around town, sharing ringtones and images with Infrared or the first version of bluetooth, having lan parties on the pc's at school playing call of duty 1/2, Discovering youtube in 2007 or 2008 when it wasn't THAT popular, Runescape and miniclip, the rise of memes, then suddenly I finished high school. and BOOM out of nowhere I'm almost 29, nearing 30. Instagram I rarely use as I end up doomscrolling & never had Tiktok installed. Now its ai and we're on another tech revolution. Bro just take me back to playing GTA san andreas on the ps2 ffs. Yeah what a weird ass generation right? thanks for your attention and patience if you read this dumpster fire mess adhd rant and may you have a nice day :)

    - Millennials think we're too young and don't want us.

Yo! I was born in the earlier half of 1998, so I guess I'm more on the zoomer side of Zillennial spectrum.
I think one aspect that really defines Zillenials is our relationship with the growing use of computers in everyday life. Basically all of us were born a while after the World Wide Web was invented in 1989, but a lot of us can remember a time where it wasn't, like, this omnipresent thing. I think a really clear example of this (imo) is the increased commonality of computer usage in schools
Like, back in elementary school, using a computer to do work was this really rare and novel thing, and generally it wasn't used. By Middle School, we had a class in which we would spend like an hour on the PC doing word assignments and the like and getting used to working with programs for editing. By my junior and senior year of high school, they basically just started handing out computers, and about 50% of the work was done through their (much to the chagrin of the older teachers).
Even before the pandemic, basically a good 70% to 80% of my college work was done and turned in on a computer.
Anyways, really good video! Surprised you don't have more subs.
