I just love the root pouches. Yes - they can use extra watering but I love the portability/flexibility with their placement. Also - bagged top soil. Menards has a fairly decent top soil for less than $3 a bag. I use that with a 50-50 split with peat ($15 a bag here) - and then add the fert amendments. My plants do really well in that combo. Edited to add: thank you to your son for sharing you with us during your visit. Have a happy and safe 4th.

You are so right about compost and manure. I live in Nashville, bought $2.5 compost and manure, everything go crazy in my garden, tomatoes average 1pound each. I also use worm casting though

Been gardening in containers for 20 yrd.Someone may also want perlite or vermiculite to help with moisture. Promix is a good one if you dont have a place or time to mix all the extra bags. I also always add worm castings. When planting i always add bone meal, worm castings, an egg crush (esp for tomatoes), sardine & mix. Ive heard some put a crushed asprin to help with the health of the plant.

Looking at long-term container gardening or tall raised beds. If you leave the soil In large 100gallon bags. Do you ever develop any type of soil life as in ground? That would be a nice video idea for the future. Thank you for the video.
Last year, I started growing in growbags. I used the Kelloggs raised bed potting mix, and my gardening season was a bust. It became too hard in the grow bags and nothing would grow in the mix. When I dumped the potting mix out of the grow bags, I had to pound it with a mallet to break up the solid chunk. This spring, I made my own potting mix with peat moss, perlite and other amendments to fill 38 grow bags. I've had a successful gardening season so far.
Also, I didn't know there is small leaf and large leaf basil. I bought a couple of sweet basil plants in the spring from Lowes and transplanted them, but the leaves are small. My sister grows a lot of basil, and the leaves are large on her plants. I researched it and discovered basil has two leaf sizes.
There are dozens and dozens basil types btw. Yeah kellogs is not so good.

I’m well into my third growing season using containers on my deck, but I still make some novice mistakes. We have a massive deer population, rabbits, groundhogs, squirrels, and more, even though I live in a large suburb. The wildlife simply has nowhere else to go and wants to survive, so they’ll eat whatever they can reach. So containers on my deck is my solution since it has a substantial railing and gates.
I bumbled along trying various soils, container sizes, makeshift trellises, fertilizers, etc. l was pleasantly surprised that you can grow almost anything in containers! You do need to be more vigilant about watering and checking for pests because the plants live very close to one another. I also added flowers that pollinators love, like bee balm, butterfly weed, and dwarf morning glories.
I’ve already harvested hot peppers, Gypsy peppers, pickling cucumbers, english cucumbers, and some cherry tomatoes. I’ve got 4 butternut squash of substantial size that are turning orange, which is funny because I bought it by mistake.
I’m sure my homegrown garden vegetables are orders of magnitude more expensive than the grocery store varieties, but I’ve enjoyed the process too much to stop.
Each year they get cheaper as you set up costs get divided out. Thanks for the tips and notes.

Every Gardener learns something new every year. I've been doing for 20 years.
Grocery store produce taste horrible & very disappointing.
Companion planting does help alot. Basil's, mint, sweet pea, nanustrums, onion/garlic/chives. You can even interplant (except mint, give that one its own container) Teepee trellis or T post are great for support. I even put shade cloth over my containers, maybe easier than in ground gardeners.
I have my rosemary is a SIP and it does great.

Every video you make is just what I need at the right time! Is it too late to plant tomatoes peppers and cucumbers? I started some seeds back in March, but I ran out of soil to transplant them, so they've been sitting in little pots ever since. They're pretty small still.

I use peat, some perlite, black cow or organic cow manure compost and slow release fertilizer. Works great! The manure compost I used wasn’t woody at all luckily. It is expensive and I wouldn’t do this if I wasn’t renting rn.
Nice mix. Black Cow is hit or miss for me.

I go to a dirt yard and buy 1/2 yard at a time. They formulate the soils for various uses and you can stick your hand in it before you buy. They also sell some of their products by the bag. I get a truckload of unbagged for $25. Check your area to see if you’ve got a dirt yard within reasonable distance. If you don’t have a truck or trailer, there used to be one I went to that let you bag your own out of the big piles.
Same, picked up a yard at my local landscaping company. They have very good quality soils and compost for a fraction of the cost. I paid $35 for a yard. I went ahead and purchased contractors bags for whatever I don't use right now.
@@rebeccakrause7057 using contractors bags is a brilliant idea. I've got extra compost sitting in my wheelbarrow right now I need to do something with and some bags in the shed so now I know how to handle that excess.

Can you sub coconut coir for peat moss? Just curious because I have lots of that…getting ready to pot up 12 x 10 gallon fabric pots for my determinate tomatoes for fall crop (I live in the South East Texas zone 8b near Louisiana). Thank you for this potting mix info because boy did I need some guidance! I have seriously sandy soil here so mixing it in will be kind of cool and I’m excited to use it but needed to improve the moisture control and density as well as fertility. This spring I amended my raised beds (which were basically store bought topsoil) because last year I barely grew anything. Not until I added homemade compost this spring which changed my growing 1000% lol. I finally got something out of my garden! Compost is gold! ☺️
You can sub it. If you soil is sandy I would recommend peat with the coir. maybe do 50/50 mix of peat and coir for that portion of the mix. And yes the compost is gold.

Fantastic video as always! This one really helped answer a lot of questions I had for soil for containers. Do you have any suggestions for southwest facing balconies where space is limited? Half of my balcony is taken over by native pollinator plants including herbs, and I'd like to expand to vegetables but I'm struggling on what to pick. I'm in the Columbia, MD region so I believe 7a/6b cusp
I’m not far from you at all. There are online nurseries that will sort their plants by gardening need - containers, part shade, clay soil, poorly drained soil, deer resistant, and more. I have had a lot of success buying plants in 4” pots that are shipped to me as soon as the frost warning for zone 7 is over, less luck with growing from seed. I use just generic garden soil, good fertilizers and careful watering. You should be able to grow almost anything if you pick the right varieties.
I would go with peppers. They produce well and need less space.

I cut some comfrey leaves that covered about a quarter of a 5 gallon bucket and then filled the bucket up to about 3/4 of the way. It now smells horrid! I understand this is normal and I need to know what ratio do I use this fertilizer to water for my GreenStalk planters? For my tomatoes? I appreciate your knowledge!
I dont do it because its basically just rotting leaves and it smells awful. I would just rather use organic watersoluble. The ratios I dont know as I just dont use it. Sorry

For larger plants i know that you said to fertilize them about every two weeks with the water soluble chemical fertilizer. Do you still mix it half strength for larger plants or full strength?
I like the chem as there is no smell but any water soluble. Chem types I always do 1/2 or 1/4 strength. You can always add more if the plants look a little yellow.

You will have to face a holy God, Creator of Heaven and Earth, on Judgment day. God commands us to honor our parents, not to tell lies, not to steal, and not to take God's name in vain (like saying OMG) (Exodus 20:1-17). He sees hatred as murder (1 John 3:15). Will you be guilty on Judgment Day? Will He sentence you to Hell? The Bible says all liars will have their place in the Lake of Fire (Revelation 21:8). No adulterer or sexually immoral person will go to Heaven (1 Corinthians 6:9-10). You don't have to go to Hell. I don't want you to go there. Jesus died and took your punishment on the cross (Colossians 2:14). The ten commandments are God's moral law. We broke the law and Jesus paid our fine in full, so God can forgive us. Jesus rose again, defeating death to save you from Hell (1 Corinthians 15:3-6). What you have to do is repent - turn from sin (Acts 17:30-31) - and trust in Jesus to give you forgiveness of sins and to give you His righteousness, so that you can live with Him in Heaven for all eternity (John 1:12). Read the Bible daily and obey Him and He will make Himself real to you (John 14:21).

Was Checking out your Pouches and I am new to this so I have no idea How Much Dirt/Mix goes in to a #5 Gal Pouch and so on .... Is there a Guide for this?
I would go with the 10s and 20s the larger pots. Much easier to grow. And There is no guide sorry. I have videos on making container mix to save money but saying 10 gallons of material or 1 cubic foot often doesnt help people. Sorry.

I already visited the shop, am thinking I want the pots but if I don't have a clue how much soil goes in to each pot how can I plan? Don't you know know that info before you fill yours or fill a raised garden? Your reply seems odd to me for an experienced gardener.
Gary how tall is that bed? Is 6.5 in enough to grow cukes i sure hope so?
The raised beds are 8 and 12 inches. Since they go into the ground. They are fine for cucumbers.

What size container for watermelon ? I plan on trellis it. And can more than one plant per container?
Watermelons vine like crazy, so I wouldn't put more than 1 in a container
I would go with bush variety types. 2 plants per minimum 20 gallon. 30 or 40 gallons is better. For a good crops, I do recommend 2 plants.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN thanks I’ll go with a larger size or maybe a smart pot that is longer to give them room. Maybe 8 ft . Plant one at each end and trellis them toward the middle. The type I want to plant is moon and star watermelon.

I do have a very large inground garden. This year, I have planted tomatoes in 2 containers, large cattle lick tubs I got free, just to see how it goes. So far so good. I mixed garden soil, worm castings, some bagged soil that I ran through my sifter and some peat. It looks good and seems to be good for the tomatoes. I may add a few.more next year.
