Fun fact: out of all the Disney princesses (and queens) Ariel is the only princess to have a child!
Also I like how only Triton or one of his descendants could remove the Trident from its alter when not in tritons possession. Which leads to another reason why Morgona needed Melody to get the Trident for her... she couldn't get it herself..

Ahhh my favorite direct to video sequel so many fond memories.
I know this movie gets some flak for "telling the same story as the first but reversed" but in the sequel's defense, there are quite a few story beats that have solid logic to them. For starters even when Ariel was turned into a human she clearly retained some of her mermaid traits that were passed down to Melody (ability to communicate and understand sea creatures, can dive to deeper depths than is possible for the time period, able to hold her breath longer than most). Now the beginning of the movie never states how much time has passed since the first but to make an educated guess I don't think it's been too long since the first.
So I'd say Ariel is 17 maybe 18 at the most so she's a new young mom and then she suddenly has her baby literally ripped from her arms and threatened to be fed to a shark. That's pretty traumatizing for a new parent. This also kind of reflects a theme I've noticed throughout the little mermaid sequels, the cycle of generational trauma. Let's review, Triton was a lot calmer and relaxed when his wife was alive, but she was brutally killed by careless human cruelty. And in his grief and fear for his children's safety he overcorrected and enforced strict rules to "keep them safe" but all it does is make his family miserable and drive them apart. Ariel's interest in the human world would never be accepted by Triton so of course she felt isolated and alone.
But now Ariel is the parent who had their child's life threatened, she didn't have her mother growing up. The only parent she had that was an example to draw on was her emotionally closed off hot tempered overprotective father. Of course Ariel would perpetuate similar patterns if she doesn't know any other way. Melody's interest in the sea is innate, it calls to her because it's in her blood and to be denied that part of her identity and heritage is pretty awful. Ariel knows this but she doesn't want to scare her daughter that oh hey there's a sea witch who wants you dead so don't go in the ocean. How do you tell a little girl that and not scar her for life?
Still Ariel unfortunately creates emotional distance between her and Melody because she overcorrected as a trauma response to her daughter's safety. Melody feels out of place and that she doesn't belong but Ariel isn't seeing this as a 16 year old longing for freedom but as a 30 something mom and queen. Plus Melody is 12 kids that young are sadly very easy to manipulate. That's why I especially love the ending it's Melody actively breaking the cycle. She's reuniting the two worlds bringing her family together and accepting both sides of herself human and mermaid. There's no more secrets or danger they can now finally be free to talk and express themselves. In essence, the little mermaid movies are about a family learning to heal and move on from trauma-based patterns of behavior and parents learning to let go of their fears and biases to let their kids be free and happy. Which I think is a good message.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

It strikes me how many sequels to animated movies are about the protagonist of the first movie repeating their parents mistakes. The recent sequel to Chicken Run, Dawn of the Nugget has the same premise ‘young girl wants to leave over protective mother and see the world the mother fears, because of what went down in the original.’

I'm fairly sure I saw this one before the original also, because it was on VHS in the late 90s early 2000s when I was just starting school.
I really preferred the whole "mother and daughter who don't communicate or understand each other" plot line, it just seemed more relatable than a daughter defying a father who ruled with an iron fist. I think I also liked more that Melody's love of the sea doesn't become entwined with interest in a boy like Ariel's story did. I think them setting her as only 12 helps with that a bit (not that twelvies can't be boy-crazy) but it made more sense for 15 year old Ariel to be like, "I want to see the human world, but also hey, look at this human guy!"

So I watched TLM properties totally out of order (an unintentional habit of mine). The series, TLM II, and then the first movie. So when I was 11 after seeing Ariel be so much fun in the series it really upset me to see Ariel act like Triton and want nothing to do with the sea. Rewatching it after college, it made more sense because most people don’t think they’re capable of repeating toxic family cycles and then of course they do. Because Triton and later Ariel choose to be controlling (because they’re genuinely afraid) instead of being honest and listening Ariel and later Melody end up trusting the people who pose the biggest threat to them.

So of course I see the first one before the second one lol but the 2nd one was my favorite just bcuz of the fact that Ariel had a daughter. I watched it so much and I have both of these on VHS. 🩵
