It took both Sam (a seasoned avenger) and Bucky (a veteran super soldier) to take him down while he was in crisis mode. It's pretty clear that he is quite strong for a super soldier.

Later on in the show the Flag smashers throws a steel iron to kill Bucky. ( Winter Solider catches it) Watch the show and look how bucky fights. Winter Solider fights with no restraint. I argue only reason he was beaten by Cap, was because Cap reached Bucky.

So I don’t think it’s fair to judge John Walker’s character off of wanting to be Captain America necessarily. I mean who wouldn’t want to be. In the military. John took a few blows too that should, at this point in the show, have probably put him out of action for a few days.

I think the main issue with John Walker is this:
