After a year of daily driving, Matt takes the MOUNTUNE modified Focus RS to the Thermal Club, a private race track outside Palm Springs for some hot laps. It is a very hot day, and Matt runs with the air conditioning on full crank, and yet, the Focus RS performs admirably.
Matt's Focus RS is modified with the following parts:
MOUNTUNE Intake
MOUNTUNE Intercooler
MOUNTUNE Stainless Steel Brake Lines
Motul RBF600 High-temp brake fluid
MOUNTUNE Stage 3 91 Octane ECU Tune via COBB Accessport
MOUNTUNE Short-Throw Shift Kit
Magnaflow Cat-Back Exhaust

The track looks gorgeous.
After watching these reviews for awhile, you know Matt is having a seriously good time when he refers to a car as "The Jam", it's great
I like the way he Clarksoned out of corners POWEEEEEEEER
Good thing he didn't Hammond out of a corner :P
He was Jamesing to slow to Hammond out of the corner
Love that car but it's amazing how such a powerful car can look so friggin slow on camera!
Jonathan Arnold race tracks do that.
TheSmokingTire putting the camera on the helmet makes it look more realistic (speed wise)
Do like I do...every video at 2x speed. Terrifying.
I thought the same, maybe its visual reference speeding by that are missing or something, but I was thinking, wow this is kind of slow. Probably an illusion I'm sure he was going fast.
Matt's driving is slow.
So Matt, are you going to review the 2018 Honda Civic Type-R? You would be the perfect guy to review it, since you daily the RS. Also, congrats for the delivering the most unbiased reviews in RUclips!
Yes, probably not until August or September once press cars become available on the west coast, but I will be doing it for sure.
I didn't hear a Honda shirt mentioned in the TST ad lol. I'm 47 ad love my Hondas. You have the ITR, CTR or S2000 you can throw on a shirt. Then I will buy one
mzondi1970 ITR 😍😍
Agree matt needs to drive the R. Also chris harris.
J Gonçalves idk Savagegoose best the reviews
It's crazy how Thermal masks the speeds you're actually doing on the track. Watching this makes it seems like you're not doing much more than 70mph on the track, even on the straight.
Matthew Keller I know, right. I know the guy who owns the track and he's planning on fixing that very soon. I get to go there whenever I want
I'm totally fucking lying BTW
Sloth Mc dead lol
***** you know what else is wide open?
your mum's legs lmao
Awesome glad to see you doing some track bashing in the RS!
Wow, very strong numbers!
I've been wanting to see you track your RS! This was great! 👍
I see comments yelling at people complaining about ads in every video, but I've yet to see a comment complaining about ads...
Speedy Gonzales Im a bit stoned and read that comment 3 times and don't quite understand 🤔
Who knew the hero this country needed was a big man, in a tight suit and small chair, driving fast cars.
Love ya Matt! keep the awesome videos going.
I'm glad you had a good time driving your car like it was meant to be driven. good stuff
I still think its amazing that we have all wheel drive hatchbacks that can go through corners like that. DOPE video, Matt.
Glad to see you're liking the car Matt! Hope you can get out for an Adrenaline Academy session out in Salt Lake. Just had mine a few weeks ago and I was blown away how capable these cars are!
damn this track looks like paradise! sick video Matt. been loving the podcast recently too! im coming up on my 2nd year as a listener
It makes me happy to see you so happy!
Im in Canada, I'm marveling at blue sky and palm trees, it looks like a damn video game. Love your car Matt!
Epic watching Matt push his own car to the limit on every Corner!!! Laughing all the way...
Matt is (still) the Man!
Looked like great fun in the RS. Cant believe the rotation of this thing coming off and getting on the throttle. Think you will get it much closer to the MX5 time if you take it out of the drift mode and focus on lines vs having to worry about a car eager to get the tail wagging the whole time.
Great vid as always!
I am mind boggled at those who hate on Matt advertising and plugging on his channel. The man is giving you extremely good quality, entertaining, and unique media for FREE. If you were in his position, I can 100% guarantee that you would do the exact same thing. What your saying is this "Hey Matt I absolutely love the content, I'm not required to watch it, but if I do watch it, I want to rag on you for trying to make money while I get this entirely free well made entertainment. Why do I rag on it? Because I'm selfish and I want to be the only one benefiting from your hard work.
This is my favorite One Take ever.
Great job mat. I know you like your job but free entertainment is often under appreciated.
One of the best videos in a while. Just kidding you have been killing it.
Matt's voice pitch level tell you everthing you need to know about the quality of this Focus RS...
Hey it would be cool to see what the RS would do on slicks around there.
Topple over probably.
Just kidding. Slicks would easily shave off at least 4 seconds and get rid off all that nasty understeer screech.
Finally another RS video. With ADM going on I'd rather just watch these videos
Great to see the RS back on video and having some fun on the track. Really need to take mine on a circuit here in the UK. Lydden Hill or Brands Hatch are both within 45 mins drive.
Matt your channel is awesome. Keep up the good work. I don't always agree with you but you are probably 100 times better than I could ever be at this. Thanks.
The car looks so composed. Nice
Never knew there were private tracks out there. Looks wonderful. Amazing what money can buy.
There are quite a few, I know of at least 20 around the country and there are probably lots more I don't know about.
yeah dude my favorite one take a a minute I like seeing your excitement Matt keep hammering
Looks like Matt had a fun time!
I'm glad you did a time comparoat the end! Not bad for a street car compared to the full race prepped mx5 in all reality.
The video taken on this track legit looks like a video game.
Your real life graphics are so unreal. Literally xD
Good to see you loving the car...when you first got it you seemed not as happy as you intended after driving the gt350. Definitely great to see you learning the benefits of the car. Cool! Nice drift.
Brakes kept going quite nicely!
I really enjoy the good content recently! Thank you Matt.
The level of fun that was.
New exhaust sounds good.
Always appreciate your videos, Matt.
Shots fired.
Great video! Just like my Chassis Wash and Powder, it's 32c today and all is dry, shaved this morning with my Harry Razor and I'm as smooth as baby's bottom. Top products and top video and podcast. Thank you from London.
matt fucks up the power to weight ratio of every car he drives
The track looks like your in a game! Awesome footage Mat!!
Thats an awesome lap time , for a road car with 1600 kg curb weight
👌🏽👌🏽 I want this car. Those pops are addictive
I drove mine on the Nordschleife last year. Great drive but hard on the tire as it is easy to four wheel drift it. Brakes and tires was hot after half the lap after lots of down hill and a sunny day with 30 C. I am going back this summer hopefully it will be colder this time. You reallly need a track for this car as you need to push it over the limit to understand how balanced it is.
I agree. The Fiesta ST is more fun at everyday speeds, the Focus RS you really need to be hauling ass to enjoy.
The car looks so fun on a track!! Man I need to get myself a different car and go on a track one day
I recently got a RS and your car is my car's hero. what mods have had the greatest performance impact? I definitely want to do the coilovers first, but no harm in planning for a ways down the road!
Seems like you've got this thing set up very well
Matt is it somewhat common for the temp gauge to move on the RS??? I have done many track days in several different newer cars. I ran a modded Speed3, intake, exhaust and cat delete plus a tune. 293whp and 347wtq. The temp gauge has NEVER moved on any of the cars. I did around 30 straight laps, A.C. full blast and it was 97 degrees that stay. Stayed perfect, all the other cars I have BEAT ON on EXTREMELY hot days have never moved a tiny bit either!!! Just curious if I am lucky, or it is kind of strange yours moved??? Anyone else had a temp gauge move from center on a modern car???
Don't forget us VW dub with the shirts:). Awesome content, awesome videos and is the one subscription I look forward to seeing pop up!!!🤙. Thanks for the great shit Matt Farah.
Clicked so hard I cracked my screen.
Matt is having way too much fun lol
Matt! You should hold a contest for a prize that contains some of that coffee, some shirts, a watch maybe from your promo pieces? And lest we forget; Goldbond! Wait... not Goldbond... what was it again?
3:28 Spontaneously laughed at those skid marks
Matt, are you going to do any autocross events with the RS?
Hey Matt,
Have you taken this car to the drag strip yet? I'm curious what it would run in a 1/4 mile.
I'm on the fence for buying an RS and putting these mods on, but I can't find ANYWHERE online what the 0-60 and 1/4 mile time would be
Was that 445nm torque? Good to see the focus in another video, we need to see the Fox soon!
445 American torques. That's like 600nm if my math isn't too fuzzy
AmjadJDM it's 450 Lb/ft not sure on the exact conversion
TheSmokingTire I need you to tell me to end an argument, were the Miatas you drove in the past video faster in the track than your rs, i sure hope not, right? right?
Matt I believe the conversion is whatever ft lbs is, multiplied by 1.36 to get newton meters, same with converting kw to hp
Dacrazy-can he said the lap times in the end. the miata is 1000lbs lighter on slicks at 207.the focus at 212. I bet with slicks on the focus it would be close.
You dropped your tire pressure at 36PSI?! that is 2,48 Bars.
How much tire pressure do you regularly use? I never used more than 2,3 bars meaning 33,3 PSI
Same question here too???
sick video matt keep em coming
We will need to see a video of the new Civic Type R vs the new Subaru STI vs Focus RS vs Mitsubushi Evo Final Edition on the track!
Curious to know what type of power the Cup car makes. Your 1k heavier. Would you guess your car makes about 200hp and over 200 lb/ft more? Weight seems be a bigger difference maker than power.
Great video as always!
Remind me of doing 100 plus on a empty interstate. You now your moving but , yet it seems like your not.
Great video. I wonder if he sold his Vett.
Membership at private tracks like this tends to be SOOOO costly. It's basically rich boys club.
I was thinking the same, but the track does look extra nice.
$85k one time fee, annual dues up to $56k, plots of land for villa $600k - $2m, villa $1m+ and range from 8k - 15k sqft and have vaulted ceiling garages..drive your own car or pick one of their bmw, porsche, or aston martin....so yea kind of expensive lol....but man is it a beautiful track
In the Ford Focus RS Owners Manual it recommends replacing the head gasket with every oil change..
Or less, which ever comes first.
great job as always Matt!
Glad to see you didn't get kicked off the race track again!
A great fun car on track, very confidence inspiring and controllable slideyness (its a word !!) ..better with supersports than the more serious Cup2 I think.. not the greatest daily but my work is 2 miles from my house... the seating position stinks, bouncy ride and horrible turn radius... but all that goes away on a back road or track event
Was a colder thermostat part of the mountune setup? Might help if not. Or maybe just a better radiator. Pretty sweet nonetheless.
Do you think its worth upgrading from a focus st to this? Would they feel too similar?
Nice video. I've been around the south palm circuit at Thermal in an F56 JCW. BTW membership is over a million bucks but comes with a villa lol.
Get a protune for the RS from Tune+! Adam is the goat when it comes to tuning ecoboost vehicles.
Hello Matt, is the tuned RS more fun on the road than your old tuned fiesta? I'm on the fence about both but was leaning toward the RS. Is it as manic as the fiesta was?
The Fiesta is more fun under 80 MPH, the FOcus is more fun over 80 mph. You could replace "80 mph" with "the limit" in that sentence and it would still be true.
Your car matches the track!
Matt do a video taking your RS at a 1/4 mile track please. Great videos.
As a fellow RS owner, I've been going back and forth about doing a Mountune B3 or keeping it stock, selling it next year and getting a used GT350. The problem is, I live in Upper Michigan and would have to buy a shitbox beater for the six months of weather we have that are distinctly unfriendly to a car like the GT350. As someone who's driven both cars, do you have any advice as to whether you'd rather drive a GT350 for half of the year or the RS all year long? Thanks for your videos, by the way!
I would love to see a shirt with a Fiesta ST :)
sybex666 I think they have it. it's under the "super slow and why would you buy something smaller than a hotwheel car." section
Shots fired.
They actually keep it in the front because the fiesta is ya know, a canyon carving beast.
oh c'mon now, that joke isn't even funny, you have to try harder than that!
The joke is the $40000 car that can't beat it 😂
Was this North and South Palm Tracks combined?
Beautiful track
Matt they are coming out with a limited version with LSD from factory? Did you ever feel it needed it?
Alvin Singh not exactly. IIRC all 2018 FoRS will come with LSD standard which raises the base price to 41k.
What I would give for a Thermal esque track here... the sunshine & desert conditions help obviously and influenced the name. Therefore here in England we would need to call it the Lake club/track or Aqua Club :P
Doesn't the UK have more race tracks per square mile than anywhere else in the world? There must be one out there.
Haha yeap, I just mean the private track / membership vibe... oh and the glorious weather! They're all a good few hours away other than (for myself) Oulton Park, which is a great track but even that's about an hour away (I know I know, that's nothing to you guys where it takes an hour just to leave LA haha). Was supposed to be there in July but the event got cancelled :(
"Duhreefto, duhreefto!"
-Matt Farah, 2017
I have a feeling an STI wouldn't excite Matt around the track as much as the Focus RS does. Well done, Ford, well done! Subaru, listen to your enthusiasts.
The STI has a much sturdier diff setup. It's weakness is the reliability of its engine when modded. I'd expect a stock STI to hold up MUCH better to consistent track use.
is this Matt Farah's not quite million mile mountune focus RS?
What the hell hit the track after you??! It sounded insane. Bbrrrrrraaaaaaaaappppp!!
Cayman GT4 Clubsport
I thought Matt said he was considering not keeping this car?
Why is drift mode, and not "track" mode, the proper setting on a race track? Seems that this car is biased more towards off road surfaces than grip driving.
I have an ST so I was glad to see the RS do so many laps under hard driving and not completely overheat. I wonder how well the differentials stay cool/handle the hard driving.
Shane Bigler drift mode is better on the track than track mode. Track mode makes the suspension way too stiff for basically no benefit.
In this video, farah talks about transponders, air conditioned racetrack dumps, and declares the focus rs "is good" several times
Old Gregg In this comment section, retards try to make Farah's comment section as retarded as Rob Ferretti's.
Meme Life Tatted On My Chest the short bus can only be so short
William Hummel Mom's Spaghetti.
whatcha doin in mah waters boy?!?!?!
Hey Matt, I feel with my RS the steering gets very "darty" over 100. Would you blame the roads or electronic steering for this?
The same type of steering that allows for a very aggressive turn-in at low and medium speed corners will create that darty feeling at very high speeds, which is why very high performance luxury sports cars use a variable geometry steering setup, to get the best of both worlds. Of course, at $40,000 you're not gonna get that, so ford went with "hard turn in" over "very high speed stability."
Thanks for the reply.
"wow no understeer..." he says as his front tires are screaming in agony...
Some new tires would also be dope af. I'd recommend the potenza RE-71R's because most of the guys doing time attack run them and they're very good tires.
I mean a License Registration and Dyno Street with a F-250 or something on it would be cool. I’d buy one of those.
Big Fan From Poland. Keep the good work, One of the best show on internet, great content. Hope one dau You can get RS mk2 2.5L Tuned to 350-380 hp would love to get Your opinion, As I got one and thinking of getting the new one But I dont htink it is worth it. Any way thanks for a great show ,One of the top Crew
no license, registration, and dyno sheets shirts for the Trabant enthusiasts?
Matt how do you like the track?
I'm dying to go there
Can someone answer me why it's important to upgrade brake fluids and lines? Isn't it the same hydraulic pressure that drives the brakes?
it's about thermal management from repeated hard stops. the fluid gets very hot and expands, and the standard lines allow for that expansion (because they are cheap). Stainless lines don't expand (because they are metal) and high-temperature brake fluid will help retain the brakes' effectiveness for more repeated hard stops than standard fluid. You can also get high-temperature pads as well.
thank you that was helpful
I love the fact that I stumbled into this answer randomly on the comment thread of this video. I've always wondered that (am not terribly mechanically inclined, but love cars) about brake fluid myself. LOVE THE VIDEOS MATT. keep doin the damn thing.
Brake fluid is a liquid, which is effectively uncompressible. This principle allows hydraulics to effectively transmit movement from your foot, to the brake pads. When brake fluid boils, however, it becomes a gas. Gas *is* compressible, so the pedal will become spongy as the motion is absorbed by the compression of the gas, and eventually it will not be possible to sufficiently compress the gas enough to transfer any motion, and then you will lose all braking completely. Racetracks are especially harsh on brakes, because of the constant accel/decel, so they demand more durable fluid that resists boiling at higher temps--which are generated by the friction between the brake pads and the rotors. Dirty brake fluid will also boil at much lower temps, since impurities like water have a much lower boiling point. And brake fluid is hygroscopic, so it will absorb all moisture it comes in contact with, meaning it contaminates easily.
The woven metal brake lines have less flexibility for expansion of internal volume compared to rubber hose brake lines. Just like compressing the gaseous brake fluid, the expanding rubber hoses can yield a spongy pedal. When both are pared together, they just make things worse.
At heinsight all of this makes perfectly good sense. I don't go to tracks my self so I don't see any reason for upgrades
@thesmokingtire at one point you said "nope, I still can't go flat here" was that a car limit, or driver?
Little of both.
Please make more focus RS videos!
Just a question for you Matt: What car of the 3 did you personally find the most fun at the track?
the race car. the answer is always race car.
Thanks for the reply! And I should have guessed that really, now to turn my NA Mx-5 into a race car...
Looking forward to the next one-take already.
u also gotta get some 71-76 impala caprice - donks on them shirts... break the mold...
Luv the Ride Matt!!! Any chance you'll have any Mazdaspeed 3 dyno shirts for sale? Thanks for the Awesome Channel.
have you thought of lowering the front seats Matt? Also how much did the short shifter cost you? Could you please post a link?
Alan Joseph the power front seats are weird. When you lower them all the way, they don't lower evenly. The back goes down way more than the front, creating a very awkward position that is incredibly painful for my back. In order to make that pain stop I have to raise the seat up until just before my head hits the ceiling.
It's much higher than I want to sit in the car but the only way to avoid excruciating pain.
Yup hope you find a solution for that. There is this guy who swapped out his front seats and found in the new ones he sits much lower and comfortable. Will post his link.
