    You can just rearrange the wheels on your regular roller skates and switch one of the two smaller wheels in the front to the back to get that rocking feel too. I tried that in a roller game the last 3 weeks and it felt kinda similar to ice.

    Jeremy, love your work. Thanks so much!
    I started playing again in January after a lot of years away. I played mostly roller hockey as a kid though high school (grew up in Queens, NYC) and had done some public ice skating with the family over the years.
    When I started back, I practiced on roller blades a few days a week and on the ice twice a week. Twice, I lost my balance on the ice so badly that I hurt myself really badly. Once I caught an edge, due to my roller blade, toe-drag habit, on a simple forward-to-backwards transition, went right over, and hit the back of my head - mild concussion. Another time I lost my balance practicing a hockey stop and busted my lip - 6 stitches. I executed it perfectly. But rolled over on that back rocker after I was at a complete stop. I didn't even feel like I was going off balance both times. Just smacked the ice.
    I'm almost positive that both were due to subtle muscle memory differences required between roller blades and hockey skates. The first one, no toe-drags on ice skates. Four months now on ice only and I have that habit about gone. The second one was due to exactly what Jeremy showed in the video. Rockers on the ice skates vs. no rockers, a more anchored feel, and thusly a more forced balance with roller blades.
    So now, even though I can get up to the rink only twice a week, I won't put the roller blades on. My ice skating has improved markedly and I haven't taken any serious falls. If you know you're losing balance, you can auto-correct and/or fall in a way to minimize injury. You can't do any of that if you don't even feel like you're losing balance and going over.
    Jeremy... thoughts or experience with this? Anyone else?
    Thanks,

    That'll really interesting, I was wondering what made them so different from the "traditional" rollerblades I use for off ice training.

  • @thomasjahn983

    My traditional rollerblade Lightning’s had oval shaped nuts in the Chassis that could be rotated to give that rocker affect. The nuts were configured out of box to be flat but could be turned so the middle wheels dropped a little and the outside wheel moved toward center a little. These were sold twenty years ago and were built into my Lightning’s, power blades and cool blades. I am looking for a new pair that have this built in and people don’t know what I am talking about when I ask if the new pairs have this. I have found mostly flat configurations. What you show about marsh blades adjusting on the fly is interesting but I would think a static configuration is less annoying. Thanks for the demo.

    Hey Jeremy, I was wondering if you have ever done a review on the Sprung Chasis/Frame for inline hockey skates? I use them and they simulate an ice hockey skate feel and are really good for starts and stops in an inline environment.

      @Mike-dz7qz 8 лет назад +8

      You didn't say if you are an ice hockey player but if you are.... The inline rollerblade chassis changes the way you plant your foot as you're skating. It's different from the way you plant your foot ice skating because the blade of the ice hockey skate is rockered and the inline chassis, even with wheel modifications is not. Inline skating may screw up your ice skating stride mechanics as it did for me. I get hours a week in free ''icetime'' thanks to Marsblades and as an ice hockey player, they are worth every penny. Can't say enough good things about them. GO PENS .... GO CONOR SHEARY

    • @combatvetroobz6396
      @combatvetroobz6396 7 лет назад +2

      I am late to the convo but I play ice hockey now. My roller blades from the old days had the ability to be rockered, basically the inserts the bearings go into in the two middle slots allow those two middle wheels to stick out more and make it so the front and back wheels don't touch the surface.

    • @Mike-dz7qz
      @Mike-dz7qz 7 лет назад

      Putting the extra smaller 72 mm wheel they give you in the front, has a similar effect to your old chassis. And then there's the rocker built in to the 2 piece Marsblade chassis.
      They do not screw up how you plant your foot. To me there was a significant difference from inline to ice, and I never would have thought so. They also turn and cut like ice skates as well.
      If you're thinking of investing in off ice training aids. I would start with Marsblades. I've got hundreds of hours on mine. For me, the chassis cost alone per hour is well under a dollar per hour. 50 cents maybe. And I can skate whenever I'm up for it. Which is priceless.

    Hey Jeremy... Can you explain the difference between Marsblade, and making a custom rocker? If you get 4 traditional sized wheels and 4 smaller wheels, put the smaller wheels on the front and back parts of the roller blade, and the traditional sizes in the middle two. What would be the difference? I feel like I can turn tighter with the custom rocker and it feels a lot more smooth than regular roller blades

    When I started roller blading, it was in the early 90's. The Rollerblade brand of rollerblades actually allow you to adjust the frame. It comes by default in a flat frame with all of the axles aligned so that all of the wheels are touching the ground. The Rollerblade rollerblades also have an alternate configuration. You can lower the two middle wheels and move the end wheels inward to make a shorter rockered frame.
    I had a very hard time turning with the flat frame. Feels like there is a lot of resistance to my trying to turn the skate. The fact that all 4 wheels are touching the ground, especially the end ones, create a lot of resistance to my being able to turn the skates while it is on the ground. I have to lift up my foot and put it back down at a different angle to turn.
    When I switched to the rockered frame, I found it way easier to turn. Having only 2 or 3 wheels touch the ground at any time causes there to be a lot less resistance to my turning the skate when it is on the ground. I play a lot of roller hockey, so turning is just really important. I've always used a rockered frame.
    In the 90's, I did see a number of different brands of inline skates have a rockered frame configuration. After 2000, I cannot find them anymore. I have relied on finding the old Rollerblade brand inline skates at thrift stores after 2000. I managed to find 2 more pairs that fit me.
    More recently, I finally was able to find rollerblades with a rockered frame. The brand is Seba. It has been the only model that has a rockered frame configuration. It's all one piece including boot, so you don't have to get a separate boot and attach the frame on like the one in this video.

    Hi Jeremy , great vids .. I have a quick question about Roller helping with ice hockey .. I wanted to get some more stick time for myself and my son, so we got some roller hockey skates with the hope that it would improve our game .. It felt a bit strange going from roller to ice .. but I guess I would get used to it , The thing is a few people at hockey said that roller/inline will not benefit my skating or hockey and is likely to make me a worse skater on the ice .... Any thoughts or info on this would be great ...
    again great vids , have really helped ... :)

      In-line skating will definitely improve your on ice skating but you have to be aware that the first 10-20 minutes back on the ice will a little disconcerting because of the rocker difference between ice skates and most in line skates. I've always found that a few laps of just c-cuts will help to rewire the brain to go from in line to ice hockey.

    Even with the rockering, isn't training on rollerblades going to encourage bad habits because so many ice hockey maneuvers, (hard hockey stops, lateral starts and stops, forwards and backwards snowplow stops, 1 legged forward to backward and vice versa transitions, etc.), require you to dig your blades into the ice and basically scrape away at the ice to provide gradual friction- something you can't do on rollerblades without tipping over and falling down?
    For example, if one has to make a sudden stop after sprinting to the front of the net, on ice one would do a hard hockey stop (lower their weight, turn their planted foot 90 degrees while sinking all of their weight onto that foot's heel, and then turn their hips and shoulders immediately after) and be able to stop very quickly. Try that on roller blades and you'll fall right on your arm- you're either going to have to do a T stop (takes longer to do and strains the groin) or a modified hockey stop by "C cutting" your plant foot way wide (with your lower leg about 45 degrees to the ground) before sinking your weight down onto that foot's heel (takes much more time and space and can strain the knees a bit).
    Is there any way around this as far as wheel types, etc?

    • @Mike-dz7qz
      @Mike-dz7qz 8 лет назад

      Hockeyman5509 It doesn't work like that. There is no setting ''like ice'' on the rocker. You loosen the rocker to increase the workout so when you get to the ice, your stabilizer muscles are stronger, making it easier on the ice to skate. You may already be a strong enough skater to open it completely. If not, tighten it up until you get use to it. Then loosen it as you get stronger.

      I wouldn't worry to much about it maybe just get a new insole

      I got a pair of Bauer ice hockey skates and had total hockey put my roller chassis on them.... best thing I've ever done for my game, I will never go back to a roller hockey skate again. definitely the way to go. and don't waste 200 dollars, just do a full rocker.

      I totally did that when I was a kid c. 1980 in NYC. I couldn't find a decent pair of roller skates (the old-school box configuration) anywhere. Chassis and wheels were really good. Boots were total crap. I bought a pair of Bauer ice hockey skates for like $69 (a lot of money back then), drilled the blades off, and had a local shoemaker put a heels and the roller skate chassis on them. Awesome!

    Can someone recommend me a pair of inline skates similar to hockey skates because I want to keep skating of ice

  • @Gefilta
    @Gefilta 6 лет назад

    How can this be better than rockering regular inline hockey skates? Rockering means you can have only one wheel in contact meaning you have greater manoeuvrability but Mars blade while feeling like an ice skate you have four wheels on the ground . In that regard I can’t see how the Marsblade is better or more like an ice skate except in the motion.

    For experienced ice hockey players it doesn't matter what kind of roller blades you use as roller hockey is mainly for stickhandling and shooting practice.

    this was a really informational video on the mars blade roller skates you explained the skates in detail and explained them really well and gave all the right information on these roller blades.

    Standard skates like missions have a high lo set up which means they have larger wheels in the front and slightly smaller in the back. So they come rockered automatically.

    • @Waty8413
      @Waty8413 7 лет назад +1

      That's totally wrong. The large wheels are in the back, the small are in the front, and there is no rocker, the wheels all contact the ground/rink surface at the same time. They are not rockered like some older in-line skates were. The only way to rocker hi-lo's is with four different wheel sizes on one chassis.

    I know this video is old, but Marsblades now offers a full skate, so you don't have to have the chasis mounted on an existing pair of boots.

    simple, spend 200 or so on the frame and how ever much it costs for shipping, then start drilling holes into your skates

    i am an inlinehockey player... can i train and play with it??

    • @oximofo9
      @oximofo9 8 лет назад

      Apparently these are tough enough for full time inline players. Which is normally the issue with chassises. They can replicate the ice feel but in a game the wreck your wheels or break. Making them completely impractical.

    • @heroangel20
      @heroangel20 8 лет назад

      I still don't see the point personally... just do a full rocker and save yourself 160+ dollars (depending on the price of your 4 new smaller wheels)

    • @oximofo9
      @oximofo9 8 лет назад

      heroangel20 I think these mimic the weight transfer and edge weight of ice skates better, beyond just turning radius. I actually like how inline skates play compared to ice skates for inline, the game should just play to its strengths and give up being a training sport for ice hockey.

      easily go 76 - 80 - 80 - 76 rockered setup, I know people that skate on that for fun.
      Can't get on with it myself, it feels wrong on street skates but right on my ice skates. Weird!
