- HMS Defender is a state-of-the-art destroyer whose main objective is to defend the UK's Carrier Strike Group from air attack.
Forces News was invited on board during HMS Defender's visit to Liverpool, to learn more about the Type 45 destroyer's role in the modern-day Royal Navy, as well as to gain insight into the sailors' experiences in supporting its mission.
Life on board is busy and varied, this year HMS Defender has already sailed to Norway twice, conducted weapons trials in the Outer Hebrides and escorted several Russian units near UK waters.

We don’t have a navy anymore.
I visited HMS Defender during her Liverpool visit last week and I got a good glimpse of life on-board. I'm also in the Navy myself, currently in Phase 2 training so hopefully I'll get my ship for real soon.
Stay free stay safe🇬🇧
😂 look for the golden rivet. Touch ya toes and up it goes.
I jest. My Grandad served on a strike carrier with the British Pacific Fleet.
Thanks 4 The Update ! ( Stay Safe 2 All The Crew ] EX R,N.X.S
Just a technicality… R.N.ships don’t have “Crews”. They have Ships Companies.
State-of-the-art Royal Navy destroyer HMS Defender and HMS Reliant and my dad was a Royal Marine Commando.
keeping it running. best for all of us.
Love UK 🇬🇧 from Canada 🇨🇦
Was on board for family day last year. What an amazing ship and atmosphere
Can’t even stop a few dingy crossing the channel 😂
Nice ship!
They mentioned air-defense and that's all well and good but what about *sub*-defense?
Surely they must have the ability to defend against submarines as well as aircraft!
She’s an air defence destroyer specifically. Hence the wide beam to give her a stable platform at the expense of noise and drag. The 23s and 26s are the sub hunters.
There are these things called frigates bud
@@scottwhitley3392type 26 are larger and fatter ..
Keep up the good work guys
Biggest regret of my navy career was not leaving sooner.
Why
Yeah, why?
👍👍👍
Defender seems to do the work of all 6 T45s. Was fascinating to be onboard in Liverpool.
Greatly appreciate captain
Officer 👮♀️ any advice to be come royal navy?😢
1:24 Isn't that the guy from Sailing Home?
Was on proper destroyer, HMS Defender, D114 in 1956, sent to the Suez, sorted that then to Cyprus to sort out!!
These are far from ‘state of the art’. They have less missiles and vls cells, shorter range, slower and is smaller so less ability to be refit than any of its equivalents in the USN, PLAN, Russian Navy, JSDF, Korean Navy and even the Indian Navy.
They lack supersonic and long range anti ship missiles, they only carry very few missiles of all type let alone AAW, ABM and ASUW individually.
It’s a disgrace that the Korean, Japanese, Indian and Russian navies have newer, faster, larger, longer range, better armed, more heavily armed and numerically greater ships than us!
If this ship came across a Chinese Type 55 destroyer, which then used all it's 112 VLS to launch 112 anti ship missiles at this destroyer, how would it deal with that?
Do you wear those berets in tropical waters?
You serve "in" a ship, not "on" it!
I here new updates for the 6 Defender class ships includes oars for when the engines fail again.
Sails.
Thank you for not parading transvestites in front of our faces in this video.
Grow up, petal.
Sorry darling, you're in the minority with this mindset. Clearly on the wrong side of history.
@@razgriz380 You are deeply deluded if you think that the current insane push from the MSN and government represents anything even close to a majority view.
@@apu_apustaja They know it too. That's why they disabled comments on the tranny video.

Poor taxpayers in UK...
Why so George? The Royal Navy is money well spent. Oh and we are not 'poor' 🤭
How delusional are you? These are needed for national security and defence, if you think defence is a waste of money, then by all means, when the next war comes rolling in, have the nhs, Royal Mail, education sectors and all them with their new lump sums of salary increases fight for us. Oh wait. THEY CANT! defence first and foremost
Americans use to name their navy ships after independence war battles they won over the British. Like: USS Lexington, USS Ticonderoga, USS Bunker Hill, USS Yorktown. Shoudent Britain name their ships after battles they won over the USA like HMS Camden, HMS The Cedars, HMS White Plains?
Nope, not at all.
Nah Royal Navy ship names are some of the best out there, let the yanks have their naming scheme.
@@hippopotamus86 Why?
No, no one seems to care about the US revolution in the UK. There's a few places, like roads on military bases, named after the Crimean war 1853-56. I guess people remember clobbering Russians more fondly. Slightly more recent too.
Of course that war was the second British Civil war fought between honourable British citizens on both sides on British territory. History is written by the victors.
Yorktown is a bit of a liberty given there were more French than rebels or British army. Its why Cornwallis surrendered his sword to the French General Comte de Rochambeau and not Washington. It was a French victory especially given the French Navy shut out the Royal Navy from entering the fight and cutting off Cornwallis' escape route.
This thing can’t even surpass the HMS dreadnought
Mix of new and old rigs says it all
State of the art like 10-15 years ago yeah
Same how the arleigh burke is older and still considered it’s nations own state of the art, I wouldn’t act like it isn’t if I were you
Didn’t know you were such a logistical engineering officer. By your logical by the time a warship is built it is already insufficient 🤦🏽♂️🤣🤣
Yeah, bin it! Construst a whole new class... then bin it straight after commissioning. Continue ad nauseam.
Yeah I wouldn't say state of the art now 14 years old
@@marcusjackson2874 you can say that to EVERY ship over 15 years old or so, regardless of who made it or who possesses it
Defender seems to be the only type 45 that actually worked
how does it feel knowing the Scottish Work force is openly sabotaging new RN ships from the QE2 class right up to the new type 26 class, Scotland cannot be kept in the UK against our will ... the UK is finished
How does it feel knowing the total number of braincells sabotaging your ability to think is exactly the same as the amount you actually have?
I don't agree with your position, but I replied to say:
