Over the course of 2023 I came to the realization that I was playing MMOs less and less. Not because the MMOs currently available were bad by any means, but because I'd conquered everything there was to conquer. Nothing felt fresh anymore, and I found no motivation to log in to and play the MMOs that I loved so much.
There was nothing new to accommodate that feeling of emptiness I had whenever I'd open the launcher for WoW, Final Fantasy XIV, BDO.
This lead me to seek other games, in other genres, to attempt to satiate that thirst I had for difficult multiplayer content - with large open worlds to explore, hidden wonders around every corner.
The last few months have arguably been the most fun for me in over a year due to the number of fun, genre-defining game releases that took the gaming sphere by storm.
Palworld. Enshrouded. Helldivers 2. All monolithic hits that absolutely nobody saw achieving the overwhelming success that they had. And while I've played all of them - especially Palworld (probably more than I should have,) there's one game that has given me exactly what I wanted out of an MMO. And the worst part is - it's not even an MMO.
Yes, you heard that correctly. The best MMO I've played in years happens to not even be an MMO. But it has all of the MMO tropes and features that make MMOs so enjoyable to me.

Ironically, the best MMO I've played in years.. isn't even your traditional MMO. Rather, it's an open-world multiplayer RPG with *many MMO aspects* - one that I genuinely hope MMO studios look at as inspiration when moving into the future. This is the kind of MMO we need, one that takes risks and provides us with something truly fun to enjoy.
its a singleplayer game that also has coop functionally it is not a multiplayer rpg and certainly not an mmo. you can also do none of the endgame in coop.

The state of ANIME mmos has always been the same: lackluster. Its only in the last few years that any anime inspired mmos have been successful or regarded as good.
Well those were in anime form to us, to them it was basically indistinguishable from real life so if we get what they got we should be getting real life looking online worlds to jack into 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
Wuthering Waves is legit. It was made by a loving team, that care deeply about gameplay. I just can't wait to play it

As a Warframe player, my interest spiked when I heard 'parkour'. I'm so spoiled by that game's mobility system that I can't go back to a 'flat world' where the environment is just a giant prop to walk past on the way to the next quest.
I was looking to play Genshin to study its art style for school. How does Wuthering Waves compare visually?
One thing that make me stick with Tower of Fantasy while back, was the character customization, and the Gatcha Element is when you USE the weapon of the hero and not necersarily have to use the hero that you gatcha, just need to use their weapon. But in other gatcha game, you need to use em as character, not just their weapon

6:50 that feeling made me drop a lot of games. When you finally achieved something, the journey feels empty since all you did was farm for a while.

i agree and have found myself down a similar path through gaming, granted i seem to be a bit ahead of you. what these games mostly lack though is the ability to do EVERYTHING with a friend. it was the most disappointing thing about genshin as well, and as soon as we get a game like this where me and my friend can just pick it up and do anything together until we log off, day after day, whether thats story or not... that is the next evolution.
That type of game is a dream bucketlist game of mine.

Oh I am super pumped. I have been playing Aether Gazer and Punishing Gray Raven since those games started and am looking forward to more Kuro action. They have the best combat currently imho. Open world PGR, yes please.

Most sounds good, but no character creation kills it for me. I'm weird that way. Even though I never play "myself", I just can't enjoy playing premade characters.
From what I understand, this game basically has character locked classes. Even worse than gender locked classes that's so common in especially Korean games and that we all like to complain about.

For as much of a mess as it is in other respects, Tower of Fantasy having actual semi-indepth character customization for your avatar/MC is pretty stand-out as far as the genre goes.

Can the story be played in coop?
most likely nah. since everyone will have different progression progress in their own account. and some quests may unlock areas you otherwise wouldnt have unlocked in your own world yet under normal circumstances.
Can I play as 1 chr? 1 thing I hate about gocha games is that i cant play just one chr and that takes away from the emersion I much prefer to impersonate 1 person than play 4 every time. It was nice that BG3 was vastly playable as only one person in the party unlike games like genshin where it was either impossible cuz of time constraints or just really annoying and take too long to do anything to progress.
Yes if you want you can paly as 1 character there's no elemental reaction in this game. Also for safety you can bring a healer but, who cares for healer when u plan on not getting hit the first place🤣

This game is insanely skilled based, you can defeat any boss with any character , the requirement being just don’t get hit.

I downloaded/installed this two days ago and really, really enjoy the hell out of it. Yeah, the combat is fantastic and the story/narrative is just enough to keep you interested but not bore you to death, making you smash Next continuously. Good review, great game.

i hate to even have to say this but i truly feel its true. the next big mmo isnt going to come from an already established AAA studio. its going to come from a small team of indie developers working together to coalesce a dream into reality. Sadly im too old to learn all the ins and outs of game development i fear, but i want to make my own game that brings the feeling of first playing guild wars or world of warcraft, elden ring, and even the dreamcast version of phantasy star online. So far ive worked with another to develop a world with races and classes, backstory, and some sketches for concept art. neither of us know how to put this into the digital world and bring it to life. we need collaborators that know how to bring these visions to life.

I play only on steam. Steam doesn't have Stellar Blade or Wuthering Waves. sadge.
the only reason I quit Genshin was because when sprinting it would eat ur stamina, and the regen was kinda slow, im glad this game didnt do the same thing, thats probably also why I preferred Tower of Fantasy over Genshin, I didnt care about the characters much, but at least I had mounts or no stamina use on sprinting (I saw Genshin made a character that made open world more enjoyable, so once I get her, it might be fun again)
I've been playing various MMO in mobile in the past, not until I played Chimeraland (in-game purchases aside the game is lit and the best for me) and now the game is discontinued for global server, now for me the current MMO that i know or heard of are not entertaining or fun anymore 😔

Gatcha games are like a guilty pleasure lol.
They are INCREDIBLY fun but we all know we are incredibly tempted to swipe to unlock more characters. Especially if they are well done and the gameplay is fun.
The problem is gache makes profit if you keep players with a good game you make money but if you want more money than the gameplay justifies you have to go the opposite direction. Sadly making things inconvenient is more profitable, people will spend money to get back to the good part of the game.
I love gacha because the characters are almost always awesome, because people will want them awesome. And not only the characters are good in gacha because of that. All in all i think its a double eged sword, we just have to pray that there are companies not focused on minmaxing profit but on making profit by delivering
This is what gacha should aspire to be. Entice players to pull for a character because they love said character while still allowing players to progress without said character, and NOT because players NEED that character to even make meaningful progress in the game.

You have to pay to play FF XIV, to play new world, jeez even on black desert there's a lot of skins, etc that are really expensive and like at almost every other game it's your choice to pay. With kuro I play PGR and I have the meta charas that I want with all their stuffs (weapons, ect) so I can trust on them for a balance game, honestly

What we need is a mix of Guildwars2 with BDO with Zelda graphics, in a truly infinite open world (no loading screens) where we can infinitely venture forth.
Another game with similarly complex combat is Dragon Nest(although if you gonna play it, play on private servers with no p2w shop, official Korean version is filled with p2w).
The movement itself is a bit slow still, but the combat itself is so god damn FUN. Y'all missing out if you never tried Dragon Nest cuz it was one of the only two mmos that held my interest for so long in a genre I don't like(the other one is DDTank which isn't exactly MMO, more of a mmo lite worms game, but that one was peak too with sadly p2w moments)
idk about secret worlds main story, but its lore and world building and additional side story quests that flesh out the world? those are all top tier. especially for those that like horror and mystery.
also canonically Illuminati takes drugs to see into the past and Dragon.... Dragon breaks ToS to do so. I mean talk about an intro to a game. You show up and some lady goes down on you and then suddenly you're fighting demons.
also in terms of story ToF has a decent concept for its story with the whole time warp bubble thing. its execution though is a bit.... lacking. which i think mainly has to do with they way it handle trying to stretch content.

Tower of Fantasy is an actual MMO with awesome movement/ and combat if you guys are looking for something to play. It is a bit janky on the cutscenes but the open world and missions, mini games and activities are really diverse and immersive. I’ve got some short videos showing it off. I don’t even care about views I just want more ppl to know how good ToF is! 😂

Here is my take on any Gacha after playing Genshin Impact. How rewarding it is for F2P or maybe Dolphins
Its hard to say what rewards there will actually be on launch because the CBT2 events are clearly only meant for CBT2. But I think its ever so slightly on the lower side of currency available from the open world and quests.
The real thing though is that at least on global we can't tell how P2W this is. Crit is a really hard stat to come by except by the 5 star weapons, but I haven't seen much discussion on how much that boosts your DPS or if that even matters because if you take on hard combat your DPS doesn't mean shit if you don't adapt to the boss patterns properly.
How can a single player game be p2w? You're not competing against anyone. What are you winning lol

Well if you want to farm in mmo term gear or armor here in wuthering wave it's echo and you can farm them infinitely. ( The mob on open have respawn time but the world boss doesn't and if your out of mob you can just farm with ya friend or join random people world and farm with them) and yes echo farming doesn't require stamina just kill mob and monster.

I play genshin and i havent spent a dime on it. ive gotten lucky with what the game offers for free.dont get me wrong i have wanted to spend on it but ive resisted so far.
Wuthering waves or the kuro team really pay attention to player feedback no matter how harsh it is
IMHO the best one is Guild Wars 2, respect player's time, super fun, super challenging but you can simply chill and play whatever you want, horizontal progression, you can leave and go back 2 years later and your stuff is still usefull but have a lot of stuff to do and I con go on and on.
Having a MMO that's basically Genshin Impact/WW but with more people would be perfect to me.
PSO2 NGS is probably about the closest thing to that at present but the world design is rather bland in terms of what there is to find/discover aside from enemies to farm and the endgame is still largely just sitting around waiting for events to pop like in the original.
Now all we need is someone to actually make it!

How would you compaire this with Genshin? A lot of it screams genshin to me, the UI, the animations, health bars, environments. I sadly didnt get in on the beta so couldnt test for myself
The actual Genshin 2.0 is Star Rail as it is the same company. It's single-player but is extremely polished and a lot of money and time went into events, world-building, and VA. It feels as close to a console game like Star Ocean as you'll get out of these type of games. The characters also seem much more 3D/"real" in Star Rail, IMO. I've played up to the current content and haven't spent a dime on it, so it's not full of level and paywalls, either. Just do the missions and story and enjoy.

This game does look like it has good combat, if my friend had more storage on their phone I might try this out with them, but Hoyo games seem to all take up a large amount of space
I've not looked into Hoyo's other games but I've really been enjoying Star Rail. The setting and characters are really nice, but the fact that it's inspired by my favourite JRPG series (the Trails series) is a huge thing for me and why I checked it out in the first place.

Punishing grey was the only gacha I have ever truly enjoyed, but my main complaint was the area design and quests, but if that's fixed and the combat is improved upon even more this could be a GOTY for me. And to all the salty genshin fans that disliked this video, it ain't gonna kill genshin, it's just going to compete and make genshin better.
I'm curious, do you play single player non-live service games?
Being completely honest, this game’s story doesn’t move me one bit. It’s the classic “you don’t know who you are, and the whole plot revolves on that”. The best story is on character quests. I found myself doing exactly what I do in genshin or ir star rail, spamming skip every time I’m presented with anything that isn’t the main story quest.
Characters gameplay feels unique and overall combat is amazing. The game really needs a mount or a vehicle to traverse the world imo.
I would never call this an mmo, bc it’s clearly not and so far it’s good but it’s not like the game doesn’t promise to be like genshin impact. There are dozens of similarities between this game and genshin and I still feel that genshin nails down environment better than Wuthering waves. However, rewards and gameplay feel a lot better
You forget to mention GW2 which should be considered a hard hitter in the ganra. If you haven't delved into that game then you're missing out on a huge MMORPG full of everything.
Dozens of good mmos are disappearing because RUclips and Twitch streamers advertise the mmos they get paid for. Even if the games are bad, they try to make them look good. I mean, who would praise a boring and shitty game like Guild Wars 2? This is called manipulation.
Guild wars 2 IS fun to a lot of people though, even if it doesn’t appeal to you

Although i like the gameplay of wuthering waves, i don’t like the rng on the echoes. You could be farming four hours, getting the right main stats and the still be screwed later on by not getting the right sub stats. It’s worse then genshin. Because that system is also trash but at least you know right away you’ve been screwed

Its quite unfortunate for the MMO Scene as they are usually way more grindier because they are not mobile gachas but because they wanted to retain playercounts they just force login rewards or battlepasses just for player retention instead of making new meaningful content or gameplay contents.
Wuthering Waves is mostly a Single Player game first and Co-op later, hence why it is able to have a robust combat system. Tbh MMO combat could be as engaging sure but it is usually an exception of the rule like PSO2:NGS(Which I'll argue not exactly an MMO actually).
Mobile gacha games despite being more predatory in terms of needing to Gacha for Gameplay content, is unfortunately more profitable hence they had more reasons to make meaningful and gameplay related content.
Just play Guild Wars 2 then

Or atleast that's what happened to me when i bought one of the expansions but refunded it to buy Dark Souls 3

Yes, Gacha games are horrible, predatory scam bullshit made to appeal to the people who lack common sense and impulse control. For years people have complained about DLC and microtransactions in videogames, and now smoothbrains and zoomers are are absolutely eating it up because it's "free".
Gacha games can have good gameplay, but once upon a time these games would have been a $60 purchase and not a vampiric money-sucking always-online gambling simulator.
I can tell you are young, and it's likely you are going to grow out of being taken advantage of at some point in the future.

The MMO genre isn't actually that bad, though. It's just that some really good MMOs have been overlooked due to past bad decisions. Nowadays, however, there are some pretty good ones like WoW, BDO, and Final Fantasy.
I've played all of these 3. There is no wrong choice between them. But now i'm playing BDO. BDO is having such good updates and always free expansions. Now they will look with a little more love about the PvP of the game. It's too complete to ignore. Yes, it was P2W and because of that I stopped with BDO long ago but not anymore. Just buy the tent that is 1 time purchase for the account and you are on pair with everyone.
idk about yall but when i played crystal of atlan test, the combat and everything else was satisyfing especially the rank pvp
I find the game to be very interesting. But the best of this sub-genre, mostly because of the well built story and new worlds they are introducing in Star Rail ( basically Genshin 2.0).
Like this, it has a very unique feel but is polished and seamless. You aren't doing PVP and it's entirely single player, but it is a fantastic story and there are tons of small side quests and well thought-out events. The best part is that the grind really isn't one. Just play the story and do all of the side quests and you'll level just fine.
WuWaves looks ... ok i guess
but i dont really see it fleshing out its own identity, everything just looks like "genshin but better" and that seems to be everyone's attitude towards this game either

the combat isn't really all that impressive to me,

ppl will get bored in 3 months, complain theres nothing to do, and they're being "forced" to play the game. just like in genshin

I hope the community can at least be more patient with WuWaves than with genshin, because this community is ruthless when it comes to free shit and milestones
rng is there sure but the difference is you can farm as much as you want for the stats you want you are not limited by stamina/resin systems. also idk whats not impressive to you about combat when it has far better combat than most every game in existence. not even AAA games compare with rare exceptions like dmc and nier and soulslike games. also ww has endgame and infinite farming something genshin has neither of. the ONLY reason people say its just genshin but better is they are both open world anime action rpgs with gacha but outside of that genshin is nothing at all like ww

also, infinite farming? provided your mobs respawn how long exactly? and have you actually looked at open world? There are massive stretches of literally nothing as far as the eye can see, the spots in between one pack of mobs and the next gives you the illusion of "infinite" farming, but the mob count is exceptionally low for an "open world" experience. so I really dont value it that greatly.
Also, what is WW end game besides boss rush and a roguelike? That's not much, if you think it is, then... daaaaamn
to be fair to the people demanding free stuff, hoyo has definitely been much more stringent with their free rewards than many other gacha games. of course they have their reasons, their games are pretty easy to enjoy without having to pull a lot, but even within the company they're not very consistent (e.g. hi3 giving free s-rank selectors every now and again, hsr getting 20 free pulls and a free 5* all within the span of like 2 months, while genshin gets 3 pulls for CNY).
hopefully if kurogames follows the reward formula of their other game, punishing gray raven, people will be satisfied. i've heard pgr is one of the most f2p-friendly gachas out rn.

HSR is proof that hoyo can be generous if they really want to be, and if pgr is f2p friendly then all good for them. I'm sure the community will be happy to see this as the game launches and the efforts they bring!

Also yes infinite farming when you can just go around collecting echoes and when your world's echoes are gone for the day you can go into other random worlds and get echoes there too. Hologram, rougelike, abyss and they will add many more

the only way we get a decent mmo experience is if it comes with predatory gacha systems or p2w shenanigans. Is it the economy? Is it the industry? Sad times.
Regarding Combat the only MMO that has responsive fluid and nice combat is BDO
Wuwa tbh is more as Open world Gacha RPG that follows the exact same layout as Genshin. MMO's aren't the same as these Open World RPG, these Open World RPG is not shoving multiplayer at your face unlike MMO's (especially mobile) since in WuWa, you can select being a single or hoing a co-op game. Also for me, MMO's are more boring than traditional Open World RPG's.

i wish when you have your team they run along side you and fight with you have cool fight sequences or have dialogs about things or subjects when your exploring~ cause the whole 4 team member swap thing is just ehhhh...its like genshin an every other mihoyo games they made.....
