Magnus can lose. He says there's no rivals because he's looking at the situation overall. And he's completely right. Statistically he is clearly the best. On the day there's at least 10 players that can beat him in tournament play. But rivals for the no1 spot?! Hell no

@@josephlewis Magnus also expressed how unsatisfying classical chess is for him at this point in his career to the point where he has stopped training for it or studying or staying up to date on theory etc. His motivation to be the best completely shifted away from classical to faster variants which was already kinda evident before he said that classical chess is boring him. His domination of rapid/blitz more so than bullet in recent showings is similar to the skill gap of classical chess between him and his peers. I think that proves more or less that he can be the most dominant in whatever if he wants to be

Back when Michael Jordan was winning every year, I didn't watch because I thought Michael might lose, I watched because he was so skilled and passionate that I knew every play I might see something done in the sport that I've never seen before. I was there to watch Michael Jordan the spectacle. Similarly I watch you explain Magnus' moves against the best in the world because he does it in seemingly fresh and new ways each time. He's not a one trick pony and knowing that he can still be the best no matter the situation adds to the intrigue and wonder. Win or lose the greatest have a way of making anything they do in their collective sport captivating.

I agree that one extremely dominant guy at the top is boring, but I prefer either having multiple almost equally strong people contending the throne or one single dominant guy with a group of other people close behind giving the champion a hard time and also having very open matches between each other. The only thing more boring than one person always winning is having only one possible interesting match. After all no one stays the strongest forever, but it's much more interesting if we can't know for sure who will eventually dethrone the king.

Fabi has been better than everyone over the board and has beaten Magnus this year, not to mention he has usually been hot on Magnus's heels in rating for years and drew every game in their world championship match. Hikaru has probably been next best this year and has also beaten Magnus, albeit not over the board. Ding is the world champion. Magnus has every right to be arrogant but he's is just incorrect. The gap between him and the next best players in nowhere near big enough to say he has no rivals.

he probably thinks of the word rival more literally, as in someone who can compete to be superior than him in the field. in that sense, i think it's absolutely correct that they are not rivals. ofc a lot of players can beat him in a game but it's clear no one in the modern era comes close to contesting his number 1 spot currently. plus he didn't exactly say he has no rivals... it was more like some light hearted banter.

Magnus Carlsen's is unique and different from other players. I agree on his interview "he is the only one " His versatility, endgame mastery, practical decision-making, mental toughness, and consistency place him in the upper echelons of chess history. While comparisons among chess legends are subjective and often depend on personal preferences, Carlsen's unique style and achievements undoubtedly make him one of the greatest chess players of all time.We are lucky to be in this generation to witness his greatness.

You could see Magnus smiling when he said it... I think he somewhat meant it, but there's also an element of him just teasing Hikaru. Also, the way he said it is another way to say that, yes, Hikaru is leading the list of his rivals, i. e., Hikaru is his main rival.

@@ylyl Hey! I was looking for you! Sure, I stand corrected, Magnus said that Hikaru is on a second tier (which is arrogant but valid, after all Mangus IS THE GOAT, nobody is disputing that), but he implied that Hikaru is the one leading that second tier, which means, Hikaru is his top rival, especially in online/speed chess, which is what they asked him about. Again, it's obvious that Magnus is the GOAT, but it's very dumb to say that Hikaru is no rival for Magnus, especially in speed chess. Yes, Magnus did say that Hikaru is on a second tier in this interview, but he also said on a different recent interview, after LOSING to Hikaru, that Hikaru is a beast in speed chess. If you can't acknowledge that, you are the ignorant one. I'm not coping with anything. I root for Hikaru because I usually root for the underdog, but going to the extreme to say that Hikaru is nothing in front of Magnus is extremely stupid, especially when Magnus himself has recently said Hikaru is a beast.

    • @DavidBadilloMusic

@@德機印刷器材數位印後 With that same logic, when Magnus says someone is a beast, it means that someone is a beast. No need for a double standard. Make me feel better!? HAHAHA! I don't care whether Hikaru wins or loses... I do get annoyed when I see extremely dumb comments like the ones left by Hikaru haters. If Hikaru was NO RIVAL, Magnus would NEVER lose to Hikaru. Unfortunately he has... quite a few times, and a few others, he has barely beaten him, by 1 or 2 points, that's all. That is NOT a NON-RIVAL.

Honestly when the outplays are so nice to watch, I don't mind someone being so dominant.
Just cause it's not like he just wins everything in a boring way, but if you actually enjoy chess, you get to appreciate what amazing games he does.

17:00 he offered the draw because Magnus's moves to maintain the fortress were easy and attempting to break it is hard, so Hikaru would lose on time.

It's also worth noting that no one is the best forever. the young guys coming up from India like Prag and Gukesh... even Nihal are going to make things pretty damn interesting in the next few years.
