I doubt you need advice from a complete stranger, but just incase: How important is becomming a GM to you? Work that out, and never let anything less important to you get in the way. If you make it, great. But if not, be sure you can say to yourself that you left nothing on the table.
I think Fide should add 1 new title that can be earned in chess; CWC or Candidate World Champion. The requirements for earning this title are earn a spot in the candidates tournament. It follows a similar naming convention to CM or Candidate Master and fills a gap between the GM title and WC title which is something super grandmasters can compete for.
