Awesome review! great points on all aspects of the tent. I am looking at a 4Runner and this thin clamshell design is most appealing because my garage entrance is around 82" and I didn't want to go with a GFC Camper because it has a white top and I want a black 4runner, it wouldn't make any sense and would look bad. I am glad roof nest came out with a black aluminum version. I will be getting this one. I showed my coworker a pic of a 4runner with this tent and he didn't even know that was a tent up there, which is a nice thing to have. Sleek and minimal yet very quick and functional, worth the price to me.
I need this for my new xc90 i hate setting up tent specially when you get there at night i love your road trip adventure’s i miss our 2018 xc60 we just need more space for the kids.
Thanks for the video! Good to know that the roof of Volvo, which can take only 100 kg of weight according to manufactuturer, can handle that much overweight! Really nice system anyway!
That's 100kg of dynamic weight, I.E. safe to have up there when in motion (and when possibly crashing your vehicle). Static weight ratings are generally in the 5-10x range, though often not a commonly published number.

evolve means shelling out 3500 :D j/k I'm looking really hard at these/ I had a Tepui for awhile but it was very cumbersome/heavy/too tall on my land cruiser. I sold it and currently use a Gazelle T4, mainly because I camp with a 70lb dog and I'm not sure I can toss him up the ladder. I'm sure he'd try to climb up, but someone needs to make a backer for the ladder so dogs can climb up. / I'll also add this: Another reason I love my Gazelle T4 tent is that I can set up my clean waste toilet inside for a nice and private #2, and I use a spray bottle and shower pouches to clean off. The T4 is so tall, I can stand up in it and change clothes etc. Obv. there's pros and cons with every set up. Thanks for a great review/video!
i was woundering if you could leave it on top of your car all the time if for instance you didnt have a garage and it was out in the weather 24/7 all year,,, thank you in advanced for your reply
I don't really see any reason why not, the aluminum shell isn't going to care about sun/dust at all. Plastic shell RTTs might age and brittle after years in the sun but Aluminum should be fine. YMMV
Great review of the Roof Nest. Can you do a walk around of your xc-60, I am interested to see how you have it set up. Also what wheels and tyres you are using and what the rear tyre carrier is.
For the ladder, buy some PVC insulation - I think it's 3". Cut it into 10" width. It pops onto the steps and takes the pain out of the climbing barefooted.
I just got the Falcon xl, can’t wait to put it on my FJ cruiser for the spring. I know it will stick out a bit, but I hope it doesn’t look funny kn it though.

If I stretch out fully on my back, the top of my head will brush the screen at the head end of the tent a little bit and my toes will be a little scrunched at the bottom. Not bad, but for real sleeping comfort I roll over on my side.

Yes absolutely, the tent fabric is a heavy canvas with a rubberish coating, it and the aluminum clam-shell will hold up well to just about anything. That being said we have not faced the challenge yet of camping in the Falcon during the rain...one of our challenges is that we can't use the rear tent entry which has the natural built in awning because of the curved rear hatch and wing on our XC60 (the ladder won't go over/around it), point for Jeep style side swinging rear hatches! We've been pondering how to rig up some sort of side awning connected to the roof half of the tent clam-shell, but TBD...
Off the cuff without going and looking, I think it's Cloudera. Both the Miss and I work in the tech industry, so it was a trade-show t-shirt at some point...
Nothing dramatic, 8 bolts slide into t-groves on the bottom of the tent which attach to 4 metal straps with 2 nuts each to hold it onto the load bars. Hardest part (besides lifting 130lbs onto the vehicle) is just getting your hands in there to tighten it up, invest in a 1/2" ratchet wrench!
Good question and we don't really have an answer for that yet. I have no doubt the sturdy tent itself will handle it just fine, but the logistics of ingress and egress down the exposed ladder, figuring out where to tuck one's shoes or store other rain gear, is very much TBD.
Your bedding definitely needs to be THIN to keep it up there. Down here in California that's been easily doable, but in colder climes you'd need more...
@@MotorsportUnplugged Yea, the Falcon is a nice tent anyway. Very sleak and thin. However, I got the roofnest sparrow eye and it fits 2 pillows, winter blankets, with 2 sleeping bag and a roofnest down blanket. The tent closes with ease with all of that. I Just like being able to pop my tent open and have all of it ready instead of having to pull it out from seperate storage in the car. Bedding also Takes up cargo room in your vehicle. I guess to each their own but i would of totally gotten the falcon if i could store all my bedding.
Seems like quite a price difference, apples and oranges no? The Falcon is $3100 right now and includes mounting hardware and ladder, while the GFC is $3500 and does not include the mounting hardware or ladder. An extra ~$800 goes a long way towards more build quality! Also I notice the GFC's mattress is only 2" thick while the Falcon is 3", so while the GFC's thinness is sweet I wonder about sleep comfort...
At its current sale price, it is definitely a better value, but spending $3100+ on a second rate hard top tent as a value buy is a bit ridiculous. Don't get me wrong, it is a _huge_ upgrade from a soft top, but it is also at least twice the price and they both have to be shipped via freight. Mine arrived with the packaging in perfect shape, yet the aluminum structure had scratches pre and post paint/powdercoat(some scratches were silver, some were scratches with paint in the scratch). The composite roof had pinstriping like you would get from tree branches on the side of your car. There were also several little dings in the roof. The thing was put together with rivets and some kind of glue like 3M 5200. I just think it is appalling that they sell stuff and ship it to you in a condition that would never pass in a retail setting unless it was scratch and dent. The first thing I did to it was plasti-dip the logos black because this product screams mediocrity and poor chinese quality control. The idea of it is great(thin, less than 150lb), the function of it is mostly good as well, but its just not the premium product I was expecting. This was not intended to bash your video but potential buyers should at least be aware of this before spending a large sum of money with this company.

It's the standard size Falcon (not the XL, I.E. it's 50" wide and not the 60" width of the XL)

At 6’2” myself also, can you fit comfortably either direction when laying down and stretched out completely? Thanks for the great video and review...

Is that the Regular 4' wide or XL 5' wide? What kind of black tape did you put on it? Is that just duct tape?
It's the normal model (48" wide bed), and black gaffer's tape to seal up the forward end of the mounting rail channels to keep wind whistles away...
Carl - Did you use the manual car wash? Not drive thru right?
I go to my local hand car wash guys. I would not suggest using a machine, though if it's truly 'touchless' maybe that would be okay...

Nope, that's one downside of the thin profile design is there's no room for more than an inch or two of bedding.
