I'd say that if you have unlimited money, then 4k gaming is definetly possible even with high framerates and good frametime with extreme high end hardware (like 9800x3d + RTX 5090, both of which will come out in December-January). However, if we talk about value, the sweet spot will probably be on 1440p forever. I can't imagine technology being cheap and delivering 4k performance ever

I play on 1440 p on a 50" TV and you really won't notice the difference between 1440 p and 4K all that much, you can clearly tell the difference between 1080 and 1440 p tho

This. It's always like a 10-20 FPS difference and stays above 90. I run a 3070 with a 5700x3d. Dropping to 1080p often doesn't affect frames whatsoever; just drops my GPU temp from 55 to 45-50 lmao
If you have a high end GPU then fair, but for the mid-range ish cards that can only kinda handle 1440p the difference is significant enough that's the game feels laggy to play.
@lgndary5715 I only have an arc a750, which is a lower end gpu about equal to the rtx 3060. For the games that I play(which are less demanding), it only reduces fps by about 10%. I have heard from a youtuber that 1080p to 1440p should reduce fps by about 30%, but these are more demanding and newer games.
I'm in a similar boat. If I'm playing something more competitive I'll let my FPS go wild. If I'm playing some single player story based game I'm cranking the graphics to max.
It depends. If a had a 24 inch screen I would go with 1080p but if i had like a 32 inch monitor I would go 1440p. It's better to get better quality depending on the size of the screen.
I love playing old games on newer hardware and feeling like a bad ass. Currently playing Borderlands 2 in 4k @200hz on a 4090 max settings. The last time I played this games was on the xbox 360. and then theres NieR:Automata that literally capped the FPS to 60 and you HAVE to cap the FPS in your GPU settings to 60 aswell by enabling vsync in the GPU settings. else you'll get screen tears even with gsync enabled, had that, hated it and nearly spend an hour trying to fix the screen tearing.

As someone who has to permanently wear glasses just to see and was raised on consoles, 1080p is perfect for me. And anything past 90 fps isnt noticable for me. Been using my wife's hand-me-down pc with a 1060 in it and it runs everything I play just fine, even Cyberpunk

Plus if I want to play at 1080p modern monitors have great resolution scale, so you don't even see the difference between a native and a non native 1080p monitor.
High res is good on a game like Rust cause you can see enemies easier from further away you just need a good set up which most higher end builds nowadays can handle it pretty well and you’re still getting 100+fps and for rust that’s really good
More fps in cod, more resolution in games like red orchestra 2. Where your enemy is so far away they’re like 2 pixels. Resolution makes you be able to spot them in the first place
I switched to a 240hz 1440p monitor and it’s amazing for competitive gaming and it’s given me a definite and noticeable gameplay improvement from 240hz 1080p. I’m just able to see enemies clearer from farther away
You could always descale your monitor resolution with Something like Nvidia Control Panel. It won’t look AS good as a native res monitor, but you can still descale it when you want. You can’t use 1440p on a 1080p monitor, but you can use 1080p on a 1440p monitor. 1440p all day if you have the budget for it.

I grew up in time of 16 bits, I experienced birth of 3D acceleration, my last dedicated gaming GPU was Geforce 4 ti 4200. In that time 30fps was normal and 60fps for rich people. Everybody uses vsync, because screeen tearing was horrible and variable refresh rate didn't exist. Try playing Quake 2 or original UT on 640x480, that is competetive..
5120x1440p 32:9 at 240hz. But I'm rocking a 4090 and a 7900x with my G9 OLED 😅 but thanks, Zach, 80fps is the sweet spot that I don't like to fall under either.

I personally use a curved 32 inch 1440p 240hz monitor and it is incredible. Some people would rather use a 360hz 1080p monitor but the difference between 360hz and 240hz and very small. The difference between 1080p and 1440p is so good that you will never wanna use 1080p again. On 1080p you can see the individual pixels on it and on 1440p you can hardly see them which makes the image look so much sharper and better. 1440p also gives on advantage in some games for example you could see enemies from far away more clearly unlike 1080p which if you try to look closely then your enemies looks pixelated. Also I think 1440p is way better then 1080p it is very hard for pc’s to run games at that quality so you will need to a high end pc and might have to play on low settings.
